Book Description

"What can I do now, while I'm still in college, to prepare for my career?"

"Will the classes I choose now really affect my job later?"

"How can I find our what job I'm really suited for?"

The choices you make now always affect those you make later, and college life is no exception. The classes you choose, the sports you play, the clubs you join, the people you befriend, and the opportunities you seek all play a role in your future in ways obvious and subtle. Having survived both college and the post-college job search, Julia Kahr provides a thorough overview of the choices that you as a college student face today and advice on how to turn those decisions into the beginnings of a dream career.

Drawing on over 150 interviews with college graduates who are now successes in their respective careers, Kahr shows you how these people faced the choices they made in college and what the consequences of those choices were. Their decisions serve as an example for all college students today, and their mistakes -- there are more than a few -- provide equally valuable insight on which activities in college really pay dividends.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book!!.......2004-12-31

I poured through dozens of books trying to find the right guide to help me in my job search. This book gave me practical advice drawn from real-world experiences. I just gave my copy to my younger brother who is starting to think about his first real job.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful in giving my college-age kids some sage advice........1999-01-20

Heard about this book in latest issue of Fortune Magazine. Very helpful in giving my college-age kids a real world perspective on what they can do while they're in school to improve their chances of landing a good job after graduation.

You too can become the richest man in Babylon. The Magic StorySomething was happening to all of Jay's friends-they were becoming self-confident, setting goals, and achieving success, and it was all because of a story that was being told to them by a mutual friend, Sturtevant.

          3 out of 5 stars A Little too Simplistic.......2006-02-28

While I still enjoyed listening, it was a little too easy to figure out where the story was leading. But, for someone looking for a little enlightenment it is still a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Core Principles for Financial Success.......2005-02-13

"The Richest Man in Babylon" along with "The Baron Son" by Vicky Therese Davis are two of my favorite financial parables. While one appreciates "The Baron Son" for its depth, one will also appreciate "The Richest Man in Babylon" for its simplicity.

For those that wish understand how to make money work for them, this is a great financial start.

The book's core principles can be summarized into its 7 Cures for a Lean Purse:

          1. Start thy purse to fattening - Save 10 % of your income
          2. Control thy expenditures - Budget effectively so that you may have the coins to pay for expenses and worthwhile desires without spending more than 90% of your earnings
          3. Make thy gold multiply - invest your savings to build a stream of income
          4. Guard thy treasure from loss - Protect yourself from unwise investments and invest only where your money will be safe
          5. Make of thy dwelling a profitable investment - It is recommended that every person own their own home
          6. Insure a future income - Provide in advance for your needs in old age and the protection of your family
          7. Increase thy ability to earn - Through study, become wiser and more skillful so that you will always be in the forefront of progress

Ultimately, this fun guide to financial understanding will show you very simply how to acquire, retain, and grow your earnings. Read it, and learn why millions of others have been inspired to change their spending and investing habits with these ancient secrets of success.

5 out of 5 stars Two classics together for the first time!.......2004-06-11

I have read The Richest Man in Bablyon many times and I creidit for helping me amass a reasonable amount of wealth that I would not have been able to do otherwise.

Reading is great, but something special happens when you listen to the information. And it certaintly beats listening to the news and hearing about the robberies, rapes, murders etc.

The Magic Story is also inspiring and a powerful story. I highly recommend this program. It's great!

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd.......2004-01-30

I really enjoyed reading The Richest Man in Bablyon and found this cd on The Richest Man in Bablyon and The MAGIC Story stimulating and inspiring. Far better than listening to the negative junk like the news and play this while my grandchildren are riding with me. They love it and what a way to start our young ones off to a g reat financial beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Very good quality cd; very inspiring stories.......2003-11-22

I had read "The Richest Man in Bablyon" many times and in fact give it away as a accessory gift. It's a good story in print and really comes to life on this cd. "The Magic Story" was also interesting and inspiring. Contrary to that 1 star reviewer, I found the background music pleasant and the narrators were excellent. And the cd was of excellent quality.

5 out of 5 stars I made money the first week........2002-05-28

I have spent the last year losing money in the stock market. Everything I tried lost money. I saw the ad for the Alchemy book and thought what have I got to lose? Within one week I was making money, a lot of money. On my first trade I [made quite a bit]. Now all my friends are asking me what option writing is about and if it is hard to do. The program was easy, and the thing I like the best was that I can do it forever. I just wanted to say that this is a great book and I am really glad I found it.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2001-12-01

This is a must for a serious trader or a novice just getting started in the market. It goes into great details on how to watch the market and make an instant treasure within a day, or for more sophisticted strategies over a period of time. For times like these, this book has been very helpful to me understanding the market, and of course cashing in.
What differentiates this book is the detail the book goes into. It gives every step in each chapter. If you are thinking of getting some type of second income, than Alchemy is the book to get started with. This book certainly has motivated me be smarter on the market and has brought new life to my financial world.

                                      5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2001-01-18

I found Mr. Czlonka's technique's easy to understand and even entertaining to read through. My husband is already invested in the stock market but these techniques helped us become actively involved with our investments. I would recommend this book as a must read for anyone who is considering ways to make their money grow.

5 out of 5 stars If you work, read this!.......2004-10-03

I found this book really interesting. It holds no punches on what's happening in the workplace. It confirms a lot of what I've seen. Best of all the book offers a great deal of advice on many many subjects. Each piece of advice is set up in what the author calls, "Tips". There are over 80 of these, and I found these insightful and of help at work.

You can't go wrong with the conversational tone and the stories...many of them are very funny personal stories about the author. If you work, you should read this book.

Swapping Lies! is an excellent addition to my list of "must-haves" business books. I'm keeping this on my desk so that I can reference the "tips" throughout the book.
This book is both serious business advice and very humorous anecdotes of business life. The book is an easy read and it is written in a conversational tone that held my interest throughout. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the stories. I highly recommend this book.

                                      Book Description

Our greatest presidents have entered the Oval Office armed with overwhelming ambition, intellect, and ideals. But were these characteristics evident in youth? What are the family circumstances that have created our presidents? How did their upbringing shape their future -- and ours?

In The Raising of a President, bestselling author Doug Wead goes where no presidential biographer has gone before: straight to the childhood homes of America's greatest leaders. Wead analyzes the types of families in which they were reared, and offers fascinating psychological profiles based on his findings. Using presidential letters and personal correspondence -- as well as notes from his own private conversations with six presidential families -- Wead brilliantly portrays the early lives, loves, and political awakenings of George Washington; John Adams and the rest of America's first dynasty; Lincoln, who never betrayed his humble roots; Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, each raised in prominent political households; and the once and future commanders in chief Bush.

More than just political biography, The Raising of a President sheds new light on America¹s presidents, who were not only born but made.

"""God bless my mother, all I am or ever hope to be I owe to her."" -- Abraham Lincoln What are the family circumstances that have created our presidents? How did their upbring-ing shape their future and ours? New York Times bestselling author Doug Wead answers these questions in one of the most comprehensive studies of presidential families to date. When one thinks about the leadership qualities of George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt or the intellectual prowess of John Adams and Abraham Lincoln, it is hard to imagine them as children. It is even more difficult to envision the parents of our leaders, especially the larger-than-life idols of our political past. Our greatest presidents have entered the Oval Office armed with overwhelming ambition, intellect, and political savvy. But were these characteristics evident in childhood? The Raising of a President is a groundbreaking look at the parents of the American presidents, full of never-before-seen facts and anecdotes, as well as psychological profiles based on Wead's findings. He analyzes the types of families into which our presidents were born, and sheds a fascinating light on how their destinies were shaped during childhood. Using countless presidential correspondences and letters, as well as notes from hours of his own private conversations and interviews with six presidents and first ladies, Wead focuses specifically on the early life of our first president, George Washington; John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and the making of our nation's first political empire; the humble beginnings of our greatest president, Abraham Lincoln; the privileged upbringing of Franklin Delano Roosevelt; the ambitious rise of John Fitzgerald Kennedy; and the ""quiet dynasty"" led by George H. W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush. Throughout The Raising of a President, readers will find that the circumstances and events that would destroy most children were often the very things that sparked greatness in our nation's future leaders. These are the stories of the presidents' parents, but in a truer sense, they are the stories of the presidents themselves, from a perspective that is long overdue. "

Doug Wead first hit the betseller lists with his book on the children of the Presidents of the United States. In this sequel
he explores the lives of the parents of America's Chief Executives. It is a fascinating journey into the past in an area of presidential history that is little explored,
Wead gives brief biographies of all the presidential parents from George Washington through George W. Bush. Extended chapters focus on six presidential families:
                                      1. George Washington-His father died when he was young; he did not get along with overdominating mother Mary Ball Washington.
                                      2. The Adams family featuring a well drawn portrait of John and Abigail Adams; their influential parents and their brilliant son John Quincy who served as the 6th President of the US.
                                      3. The little known story of Abraham Lincoln's hardscrabble poverty ridden youth on the Kentucky and Indiana frontier. His
father Thomas was an ignorant brute who often beat Abe; His mother Nancy Hanks and his stepmother Sarah Bush Johnston gave
Lincoln the gift of learning, love and set our greatest chief executive on the road to glory. Lincoln had a sad, difficult and
                                      tragic life.
                                      4. The family life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt the son of the wealthy James Roosevelt and his wife the indomitable Sarah
Roosevelt. James died while FDR was a boy; Sarah was one of the
strongest mothers in our history. She was the third party in FDR's marriage to Eleanor. Sarah made FDR a mother's boy but was also the greatest influence in his development.
                                      5. The family of John F. Kennedy was dominated by Joe Kennedy to made millons; was often allied to the mob and was a womanizer of Olympian proportions. His mother Rose was often away on shopping trips to Europe and did not give Kennedy the love he craved.
                                      6. The quiet dynasty of the Bush family is explored in succinct
but savvy chapters. We met US Senator Prescott Bush; his son
George Herbert Walker Bush our 41st President and our current
occupant of the Oval Office: George W. Bush. The Bush family is notable for the strong women it has produced. Dorothy Bush the
tough, tennis champion spouse of Prescott; the strong Barbara
Bush who modeled herself after Dorothy and Laura Bush.
Wead has done a good job of sorting myth from the facts. This
book can be used as an excellent reference book as well as a
                                      great read.

This is an excellent book with a slant on history no one has ever delved into in any depth. It was fascinating to read about the one group of people who had the most vested interest in raising our future leaders.

5 out of 5 stars Held my interest....WOW!.......2005-11-26

As an extremely amatuer historian with ADD and with a fascination for Abraham Lincoln, I really liked this. The research that I have done on my own, albeit not extensive, on Lincoln seems to jive with the author's conclusion. I have no reason to doubt the truthfulness of his writings on the other presidents.

Books rarely hold my interest, and this one did.

5 out of 5 stars Will Never See Them The Same.......2005-10-22

I was waiting for this one to come out in paperback but I guess the sales keep humming along so I finally went out and bought one. Wow! it was worth it. This is a classic that will have a long shelf life in our family. I will never see the presidents the same again. They are like the rest of us - little children inside grown up bodies. The treatment on FDR and his mother is riveting. Much new here from the diaries and interviews. I knew that mothers were prominet in the lives of their sons but the massive evidence - the reoccuring events that these men have in common is remarkable. It makes sense that the "absent father" is no coincidence either.

5 out of 5 stars No other books.......2005-10-21

I like Mr. Wead's books because they offer accurate history from a different perspective. While they don't belabor psychological phenomenon when they encounter it, neither do they ignore it when it slaps you in the face. There is so much new in these books, taken from the diaries of these children or parents of the presidents. And there is so much that one can learn about parenting. I can't wait for the book on siblings.
