You Could Be Fired for Reading This Book: Protect Your Employment Rights
ASIN: 081447991X |
Book Description
Imagine an ideal workplace, one where harmony reigns supreme and employee/employer disputes, sexual harassment, and discrimination don't exist. In this dream world, workers need not worry about their legal rights.
OK, now wake up! In real life, few workplaces are ideal--and the legal rights of employees are often threatened simply because the average worker lacks a basic understanding of the law.
This book clarifies the fundamental legal rights of employees--and shows them how to fight for those rights. It examines employment law from their perspective and walks them through each step of the legal process, showing them how these issues are handled in the real world. Readers will find smart, savvy information to help them:
* determine if they have a valid claim * weigh the pros and cons of taking legal action * understand the ins and outs of alternative dispute resolution (including binding arbitration), and more.

Practical Advice for Employment Disparities.......1999-07-02
As a human resources manager, I read this book to gain insight into why employees file EEOC claims, and how to maintain a fair, equal-treatment working environment to prevent disparate treatment of employees. It gave me excellent insight into the EEOC process and educated me about employment law in easy to read language. I plan to share this book with my staff to provide a better working environment for our employees.
HR professionals should read and refer to contents.......1999-06-06
As a Human Resource professional, I found Mr. Gregory's book very helpful. All employers should be aware of the rights of their employees. This book makes us totally informed.
Easy reading for all employees to understand rights.......1999-06-01
This is the best book explaining the rights of employees. Unions should use this book as a manuel directing their members to totally understand their positions and how to defend against unfair discriminations.
Extremely interesting read that cuts to the chase.......1999-05-21
I read an advance copy of this book I was able to get a hold of and I thought it was, on the one hand, as enjoyable as a novel with a compelling story line, and, on the other, as informative and up to date as it could possibly be. Its like receiving real world practical advice about your workplace woes from a trusted down-to-earth yet very wise best friend. I loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone including employees and managers alike. I think it would be great in the college classroom and for seminars and conferences as well. This is one of the best on the subject! Buy it - you need it! I sincerely hope the author updates with a second and third edition.

Book Description
The German works councils enjoy far-reaching powers and can exert tremendous influence, which creates an indisputable danger of abuse of power. However, the employees and employer are scarcely protected from any breaches of duty it may commit. The legal protection provided in the industrial governance regulations is still insufficiently developed. On the other hand, the powers of the unions in the United States of America have long since been limited by the duty of fair representation. In a state governed by the rule of law, it must be possible to hold anyone exercising power accountable. Proceeding from this principle, the author develops and proposes a comprehensive system of legal protection on a civil law basis. Today, in light of the reform of the Works Constitution Act which was agreed upon in the German federal government's coalition agreement, this work is of great topical immediacy and represents an important contribution to questions of legal policy.

Inspirational business speaker, popular newspaper columnist, and bestselling author Harvey Mackay has been "moonlighting" for 40 years as president of Mackay Envelope Corporation, an $85 million company that produces more than 17 million envelopes a day. With the help of imagery derived from this industry, he's now dispensing a new batch of lessons on life and business in Pushing the Envelope: All the Way to the Top. Its five sections--cleverly titled "How to Be A #10," "Licking the Competition," "How I Pushed the Envelope," "The Flap on Management," and "Going First Class"--offer practical advice on such topics as hiring, motivating, training, producing, and negotiating. Each short and highly focused chapter deals with one specific idea and concludes with a pithy aphorism dubbed Mackay's Moral, such as "There's much more to winning than finishing first" and "In negotiations, as in poker, a superior hand can be beaten by superior knowledge of your opponents." Interweaving experiences from a diverse lot including Sylvester Stallone, Ulysses S. Grant, Will Rogers, and Star Wars' Yoda with anecdotes drawn from his own career, Mackay presents a litany of solid suggestions that will prove as useful as they are fun to read. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:
self-promotion.......2006-07-11
If it didn't say "Harvey Mackay" on the cover, we wouldn't even mention this book, but ol' Swim with the Sharks Harvey is a brand unto himself. Pushing the Envelope is pure Mackay: breezy style, predictable advice, management insights as deep as a puddle. Still, expect it to sell. Mackay, like Zig Ziglar, can move books on name recognition alone.
This latest tome offers 90 chapters of advice on how to improve yourself, outdo the competition, raise expectations, manage effectively, and do it all with flair. When you pack that much living into one slim volume, you can expect each chapter to have maybe a shade more meaning than a fortune cookie. That's not to say that some of the advice isn't sound. It's just that so much of it is insight into the obvious. Take this pearl, for example: "Always let the other side talk first" in a negotiation. OK, fair enough, but what if both of you have read the book?
If nothing else, Mackay is a master of self-promotion. He tells you that to save time you should listen to books on tape and then gives you the phone number for Nightingale Conant, which he calls "the biggest and best" source of them. Well, he doesn't mention it, but Mackay's taped books are a Nightingale Conant staple. Then again, learning to self-promote, network, and connect at every turn is central to his whole rap. He's merely practicing what he preaches about pursuing every opportunity--indeed, running it into the ground.
Mackay does point readers to some really good titles with the oomph his book doesn't have, suggesting The Real Heroes of Business...and Not a CEO Among Them, by Bill Fromm and Len Schlesinger (Currency/Doubleday, 1994), which chronicles 14 employees across the country who provide exemplary service; and Leadership Without Easy Answers, by Ronald A. Heifetz (Belknap Press, 1994), which is indeed one of the best books on leadership written in many years.
To be fair, Mackay can be a hoot, and sometimes that's all you want one of his books for. He can even laugh at his own breed, as he does in a wonderful send-up in chapter 9. Laid out as a screenplay idea that was rejected by his real-life moviedirector son, the chapter describes a befuddled, aging CEO who spouts management wisdom--when he can remember it--to young whippersnappers seeking advice. "Dig your well before you stub your toe...wait a minute, that's not it...," he fumbles. Hilariously accurate.
Great book.......2004-03-07
One of my favorite things to do besides learn about the stock market is read books on starting/running businesses and self help/motivational/inspirational books I find these books to be a relaxing brain stimulant that helps me better myself. I am sure others receive the similar feelings and thoughts from reading material like this.
Pushing the envelope is another great book by Harvey Mackay (he owns an envelope company incase you were wondering.) Like his other books "Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive" and "Beware the naked man who offers you his shirt" Pushing the envelope is choke full of real life tips on how to be better at work, at home and with friends. Hands off to Harvey for he has created another wonderful book.
If you would like to invest in your future I recommend purchasing this book: Pushing the envelope all the way to the top

Mackays best book to date.......2002-09-06
I have been a fan of Harvey Mackay since reading Swim with the Sharks. Pushing the Envelope is even better. If you are in business or want to be, read this book and learn from a master..
Is it me?.......2001-08-11
Did I read the same book as the rest of these reviews? I like Harvey Mackay and enjoyed Swim With the Sharks, but I thought this book was a fairly simplistic brain dump of cliches and unoriginal thoughts. I do believe Mackay's geniunely decent nature come through and most of the concepts were fairly well presented, but I found very little here I hadn't already heard. I kept thinking to myself that this was Harvey's publisher squeezing out another book under contract. Sorry.
Buy this book!.......2000-09-21
From Author of "Script Magic: Subconscious Techniques to Conquer Writer's Block: Want to get motivated? Want to do the impossible! You can, with Harvey MacKay as your guide! There are many poignant messages in this book, but the two that touched me the most was the fact that MacKay aimed for and achieved his desires, despite the "odds." And secondly, the subtle message I get from him and his book is that generosity is really the best policy. Tuck it under your pillow at night and read it for inspiration!

Book Description
The soup du jour at the Hopvine Pub could be Crab Bisque, Cold Strawberry, Moroccan Lentil, or Nigerian Yam. If it has warmed the hearts and touched the souls of the pub's trendy patrons, it's in this overflowing recipe book categorized by seasons. Chef Michael Congdon takes soup lovers from spring to winter with inspired combinations: Curried Avocado; Fuji Apple and Gorgonzola; and Cauliflower with Pancetta and Orange are just a few. He infuses even the basics (French Onion, Potato Leek, Minestrone) with his fresh, innovative style. Also included are recipes for accompanying sandwiches (Smoked Gouda and Marinated Artichoke), salads (Spring Fruit Salad with Wasabi Lime Vinaigrette), and desserts (Uber Brownies).

Excellent cookbook, beyond-excellent soups!.......2005-02-11
Soup is my favorite food! After eating at the Hopvine and enjoying the soups for quite some time, I was overjoyed when Michael Congdon brought many of those soups to us in the cookbook. I got my copy in the first week it was available, and made my favorite - the Southwestern Pumpkin - shortly thereafter. Delicious! I've also made the wonderful Potato Leek and the White Bean with Caramelized Shallots and Rum. A friend of mine purchased a copy of S.O.U.P.S. for me for Christmas, not knowing I already had one... but hey, it just meant that she now has a copy of her own. :) She and her guy made the Moroccan Lentil soup and loved it! That's going to be what's in my pot next, too. Michael, thank you so much for sharing your recipes with us!
Excellent Soup Recipes. Less than Excellent Editing. Buy It.......2005-01-12
`S.O.U.P.S' by Michael Congdon, with a subtitle of `Seattle's Own Undeniably Perfect Soups' reinforces the picture we in less benighted metropolis that Seattle is challenging New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Houston as a major national presence in good food service. It must be all those Microsoft business lunches! This book is a welcome; quality addition to the literature on soup making and it is notable for both its great accomplishments and its weaknesses.
Good soup books seem to come in two flavors. The `upper tier' of books by major American culinary writers and figures such as Barbara Kafka, James Peterson, and Jasper White, published by Wiley and Scribners cover all the classics and the authors' variations on classic recipes. The lower tier by, for example, Paulette Mitchell, the `Daily Soup' chef/owners, and our current author Conned, published by new, small publishers such as Hyperion, Chronicle, and Sasquatch Books present collections of soup recipes which are honed to a fine edge in small restaurants over a long time.
The most obvious question is whether Herr Congdon's soups live up to their billing as `perfect soups'. My humble opinion is that the soups produced by these recipes are very, very good, at the cost of a level of effort that may be beyond most home cooks on most days of the week. Thus, what Congdon has done is to give us a collection of excellent recipes for special occasions. He has enhanced his presentation by giving us the recipes by season, and I find no violations to his suggestions for cooking seasonally. His recipes are very similar to soups done in New York's `The Daily Soup Cookbook', where every soup is meant to be the center of a complete meal. There are practically no soups like some in books by Kafka and Peterson that may be nothing more than a broth and two or three greens and a pistu garnish. Thus, most recipes except for the summer cold fruit soups have a lot of ingredients on top of the ingredients needed to produce the vegetable or chicken stock. Most of his soups also make great use of both mild and hot chiles (more on this later), which distinguish Congdon's recipes from many others. If you happen to be a chile head, then I suggest you drop what you are doing and order a copy of this book.
In addition to the 69 soup recipes, the book gives an especially nice introduction to soup making equipment, herbs and spices used in these soup recipes, soup making methods, recipes for soup accompaniments, and recipes for the three major soup stocks, vegetable, chicken, and fish. The two books to which I am comparing this volume each give similar material. One consideration is that both `Daily Soup' and Congdon's recipes both tend to give restaurant sized batches of 12 or more cups of soup, although there are several which deliver between four and eight cup servings. When you are dealing with a dozen or more ingredients, scaling this down to half becomes quite a challenge in this non-metric world of measurements. And, unlike Ms. Mitchell's `A Beautiful Bowl of Soup', Mr. Congdon does not systematically give recommendations on refrigerator and freezer shelf life for these soups. But, as Ms. Mitchell's book is limited to vegetarian dishes, the real competition is in a comparison between Congdon and the `Daily Soup' crew.
One thing that struck me throughout Mr. Congdon's recipes is that the length of cooking time for many recipes is longer than for many other writers. By far the most dramatic example of this is the recipe for chicken stock that calls for overnight simmering of the stockpot. I have read dozens of chicken stock recipes, and there may be only one other I can remember which takes it out to such great lengths, and, this was not from a recognized culinary expert. I really like the fact that the vegetables are cooked and removed before the marathon session, but even this step is relatively long, as I have seen expert opinions which say that vegetables in stocks should be cooked not much more than an hour or they will cloud the stock. Even more experts state that cooking fish for stocks should be limited to one hour, while Mr. Congdon recommends `no less than two hours'.
One thing that surprises me is Mr. Congdon's use of the food processor rather than either a Waring style or immersion style blender. Most authorities recommend a blender over a food processor for soups. And, I think a glass blender beaker is a lot easier to clean than the plastic food processor chamber. It may also have been useful for the author to specify a china cap (chinois) for filtering finely pureed soups, unless he found he painted himself into a corner by criticizing Emeril Lagasse for using a lot of equipment to produce his TV Network soups.
My biggest problem with Mr. Congdon's writing may be due to no trained copy editor at Sasquatch Press, as strange statements asking us to melt our olive oil and dissolve flour so it can coat ingredients make me worry that the final text may simply not have been adequately proofread. This probably contributed to Mr. Congdon's highly inconsistent use of the terms chile and peppers, where he goes against standard practice in the culinary world in calling fresh items `peppers' and dried items `chiles'.
If you really only want one book for thick, high quality soups, the `Daily Soup' volume may be the better choice for its cleaner writing and typesetting, but if you really like your soup and enjoy every recipe you can get your hands on, then this book is for you. I would only suggest you consider simpler recipes for chicken and vegetable stocks. For chicken, especially, I prefer the recipes that either use carcasses or save the meat for other dishes using poached chicken.
Highly recommended if you really like soups.
Shut Up and Eat.......2004-12-05
The number of Seattlites who greet new residents and visitors to the city with the statement "Go to Capitol Hill and eat soup!" is unnerving, but those who take the advice aren't disappointed.
Michael Congdon, the talented, appealingly edgey, and occasionally irrascible cook at Seattle's Hopvine pub eventually wearied of being besieged for soup recipes and caved to pressure to write a book.
S.O.U.P.S. is the happy result. The book is as unpretentious and charming as the pub and its tattooed skinhead chef, but don't be fooled - it offers an extraordinary variety of well-written formulae for seriously tasty soups. (The "Butternut Squash with Pears and Cranberries" on page 125 is my current favorite, but ask me again tomorrow.)
Five star cooking from a venue that can't be bothered with stars. Now shut up and eat.
Seattle's Best Soups.......2004-10-29
Hopvine has some of Seattle's best lunches, in my opinion, with hearty, healthy sometimes-vegetarian fare that goes way WAY beyond "pub food." The seasonal wasabi spring salad is to die for, and the artichoke/gouda sandwich is fantastic. Don't get me started on the soups: the amazing chilled strawberry soup in the summer, the creamy potato leek with lavender in the winter, the miso soup that's more like a meal.
And now, imagine my delight to see that Hopvine's chef, Michael Congdon, has released a whole book full of his amazing soups! Michael has an amazing concept of taste...once, when I sat by myself sipping his vichyssois, he came by my table and whispered conspiratorially "the taste will really pop with a little of this hot sauce." I do not like hot sauce. I lean towards un-spicy food and had never (seriously: NEVER EVER) added hot sauce to anything. But the way Michael suggested it, I figured I'd give it a shot. Just a tiny little dot of hot sauce on the top of the cold, creamy soup. And that tiny dot totally transformed the soup. There were many more dots after that, and I learned to trust Michael's advice absolutely.
And now there's this book! The whole first chunk is all about spices and tools, and might seem old hat for experienced chefs, but for culinary dullards like myself, it's sheer genius. And the soups! Dear god. I cannot wait to try some of these. Bonus: there are salad, cookie, and other non-soupy recipes in the back.

excellent non-mathematical primer.......2003-09-21
I work in the securities industry, and this book accurately described the markets and products without the detailed mathematics. I would recommend this book as a first reading before the Hull and White book which is much more mathematical.
Too bad it's out of print. I'd like everyone in my group to have a copy.
perfect for practical use.......2000-08-17
I consider the book a perfect guide written by a professional for professionals. If you are looking for scientific completeness and complication, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a competent down-to-earth reference, this is your book. I wonder when the third edition of this valuable tool will be published.

This Integrated Strategy Works.......2002-02-10
Having taught Finance at various schools, I found this book refreshingly straightforward for a topic most of my students find complex. Unlike a lot of the text type books on this topic (which are also good for technical analyst types), the authors have captured and synthesized a very clear strategy which works.
The incorporation of LEAP's which were introduced in the early 1990's and training on the language of options which I find many brokers do not understand, makes this volume unique.
I recently began recieving the fax service which provides real time reccomendations and ongoing guidance for all positions. So far I have achieved results beyond what I used to achieve with my regular equity positions.
I would reccomend this book for those that are new to options as well as those who have some years of experience. I have found it a small investment that pays for itself many times over.

"Finally the Secrets Are Revealed... ", but I have not find anything new in the book that was not known for centuries. The authors claim a "annualized return of up to 400% with less risk than owning stocks!" , but the book never explains when to buy or when to sell. On the authors webpage they publish their performance tracking, - and of course the annual return is miles high for every trade but...all performances are from closed trades. There is no possibility to check the process in real-time. If the authors make these tremendous returns indeed in trading, I wonder why they don't publish their 'strategy' on the net for free, but need to sell books for a price that is not worth it. I would stay away from this one unless you are a complete beginner...
Great for Those Wanting to Learn Proven Options Strategies.......2001-12-15
I learned about the futures and options market in my MBA classes. However, you don't learn street proven trading strategies from an MBA program. You learn these strategies from books such as Optional Wealth.
This book is great for those looking to learn proven options strategies for the first time. For those who are already experienced options traders, there are techniques in the book that can enhance your current trading strategies.
The author's publish their trandes on their website and you'll notice that they rarely lose.
only general information.......2001-12-04
This paperback only counts 128 pages and nevertheless costs $ 40. I could not find any strategy on options in the book that is not common knowledge or that anyone would not be able to find on the internet within a minute. Many pages are reserved for the subject 'selecting a broker ("....if you are not getting what you need, do not hesitate to select a new broker". Thanks) and 'research on stocks' ("Should you desire to develop expertise in a particular area (like technical analysis) we recommend you find a good book on the topic...". Thanks again). The book contains four graphics which, as far as I can judge, have not any connection with the text whatsoever. For me the book has not add any new information, and I am afraid this will be the case for many more people.

Blindsided! presents a series of breakthrough techniques to help business leaders identify trends earlier and more accurately predict their impact. Drawing upon his extensive experience consulting the world's top corporations, global change guru Jim Harris demonstrates how to build consensus faster within organizations when the tumult of the market threatens to throw plans off course. Experts predict that 80 percent of the technology that will be in use in our day-to-day lives 10 years from now hasn't been invented yet. Over two-thirds of the Fortune 500 companies from 35 years ago have vanished due to 'blindsiding.' Jim Harris offers a diet of four strategic tools to help secure your company's ongoing vitality and growth.
First you must understand the laws governing the future. He offers 12 of these. 1. Moore's Law (1965)- computer processing power will double every 18 months until 2014. 2. Metcalf's Law - your network's value is proportional to the square of the number of its members. 3. Gilder's Law - bandwith grows 3X faster than computing power. 4. Coase's Theorem - corporate activities are driven by lower transaction costs. 5. Information Explosion (not management)- information quantity on the net doubles every 2.8 years. 6. Expanding Storage Capacity and Falling Costs of Memory - in 1993, a gig of memory was 1000 dollars, now it is about 50 cents. 7. The Wireless Explosion. 8. Schumpter's Law of 'Creative Destruction'- the old makes way for the new - a corporation's average life is less than 20 years - you must make your own products obsolete in order to survive. 9. Dr. Geus' Law of Learning - the only sustainable competitive advantage is to learn faster than the competition. 10. 3% rule of Product Waste - only 3% of the elapsed time for a corporate process is actually needed to complete an activity. 11. The Peer to Peer Law of Distributed Computing - joined networks have more power. 12. Environmental Imperative - lowering environmental impact of new technoloy, such as ebooks or mp3s over books and cds.
The weight of this book is given to what these laws mean to your company, and how they can be used.
The second part of the strategy is to get your company to operate in 'real time' just like your body.
The third part is CRM - Customer Relationship Management. 80% of your profit comes from 20% of your customers per Pareto's principle. It also states that 40% of your profits come from 60% of your customers, and 20 percent of your customers will cause a negative profit of 20 percent.
The fourth discusses breaking some of the dominant rules in your business sector.
The fifth stratey is 'Scenario Planning' developed by Herman Kahn of the Rand Corporation think tank in the 40s. Create plausible future scenarios. Which may be likely? Which would have the biggest imapact? "Backcast", look backwards from the future, possible bad futures, and determine what could have been done to prevent it, and what were its markers?
Chock full.
Five Stars
Blindsided - Unfolded Future.......2005-06-23
This is one of the best books I have read so far. The author was prolific in his writing and contains very rich contents. He has very explicitly shared his experience throughout the book. The books gives good insight about the American music industry and how companies like napster, netscape really skinned through the time. Also microsoft, IBM and, Dell. Amongst all the case studies quoted, CISCO was the best and it was excellent. I am waiting to read Mr. Harris's next book which he will probably name it being and becoming.
Also, his earlier book the Learning paradox was an amazing book.\
I recommend blindsided to be read by all those in the world of business not only in America but globally.
Best Regards,
Kamal
change or be blindsided.......2004-01-20
Jim's book offers extrordinary insights and research. He has delved deep into the complex psychie of the corporate strategic misfires. Read it and see why he is asked to speak to many organizations yearly on change and managment. Pay attention to the parts about Kodak and Microsoft. Your orgainzation may not be in the technology industry but this means you need to read this book more. From volunteer organizations to small start-ups this book has practical advice. We apply it.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-11-19
In Blindsided, change expert Jim Harris discusses the startling way some major companies got "blindsided" - caught with their antenna down by fast-moving technological changes that undermined their businesses. He fills you in on how change works, and works quickly. Then, as if to make you feel better, he offers practical techniques that superior companies use to avoid being walloped. Harris tells you (consider this a warning) what to do to deal with change. Generally, this is a top-notch, straightforward book, although some corporate histories and guideposts on recognizing change may sound like retreads of other material. Still, Harris provides a guidebook for heeding and handling change. Just ask yourself the questions at the end of each chapter to find out if you need this heads up strategy check. We from getAbstract suggest that diagnostic dialog to business strategists and executives. Just keep looking behind you while you are reading - someone, or something, may be gaining on you.

A Wonderful Life Raft to Write out the Storm.......2005-11-21
I was expecting a lot from this book and was pleasantly surprised to see it meet those expectations.
This book covers many topics that face writers during their writing process/life. It takes you by the hand and walks you through each one as if you have a coach right there with you. It also has 'try this' exercises at the end of each chapter giving you suggestions of how to work through that perticular road block - a very nice bonus to the book.
There were a couple of very minor typos on the first Introduction page, but aside from that it is a very well written and quite useful book and well worth the price of admission.
read it!.......2002-12-13
Excellent, no-nonsense advice. All writers should read this book. Morrell's teachings can save you from losing heart, and your manuscript from losing ground. Not only does the author help writers begin their stories, she shows them the route to finishing it!
Procrastinating writers take heart!.......2002-01-02
If you are a procrastinator when it comes to writing, as I am, Writing Out the Storm will help you get "unstuck". Jessica points the way to many writing paths and gives you a gentle and encouraging push on your way. Loaded with creative and practical ideas!
It's like sitting down with a good friend.......1999-09-03
Writing Out the Storm is funny, smart, and inspirational--like Jessica herself. There's no "authorial distance" here. She's tapping us on the shoulder and saying, "Try This."
An elegant solution to writer's block.......1999-08-14
This book is simple, straightforward, and useful. It reflects care and skill of the author, who has synthesized many years of writing and teaching writing into a book that's slim in size but huge in ideas. Not one word is wasted here--every quote, writing sample, and idea has purpose. A lovely effort and better than 95% of writing how-to books on the market.

Writing Out The Storm........2007-06-11
Writing Out The Storm by Barbara Abercrombie.Paperback 145 pages. As The title suggest you can read and write your way through the storm of serious accident, illness or injury. It provides a positive way to cope with long standing medical issues. This book is not for the casual reader.
I was drawn to it because I have Cerebral Paly and I was looking for a way to cope with the psychological effects of this. I like many people in this book want to live my life rather than being defined by a condition. I liked this book for many reasons.I was attracted by the wide variety of people sharing their situatins.I found it very helpful because the sources of the material was all given. If you want to use it as a writing/ reference book,a simple, clear structure encourages the writer and helps with those difficult blocks. It also provides a page turning story.I think it is clear I am a fan. Give it a go and good luck!
Brilliant, Inspired and Inspiring.......2002-10-23
Writing out the Storm is a gift to all who have experienced trauma in their lives...and even those who haven't. Abercrombie's compassion, sensitivity, sincerity and humor engage the reader in a community of the famous and not so famous who have in common the hardships that life doles out. The reader finds that he or she is not alone and that there is a creative way to channel the anger, despair, loneliness, fear, and other emotions generated by serious illness or injury into very beneficial and positive energy. Abercrombie crafts the layers of this book so beautifully that she not only encourages the reader to write, but also dissolves the writer's block that discourages most of us from trying. Wonderful!!!
writing out the storm.......2002-10-04
Barbara Abercrombie is a simply wonderful writer. One of UCLA's most
popular and gifted writing teachers the exercises in this book are
simply amazing .It is easy to understand why Ms. Abercrombie's writing
classes are always full. You will want to give this to everyone you know
who is journeying through an emotional or physical storm. At a recent
book signing people were buying 5 and 6 copies at a time. No ordinary
self- help tome, Ms Abercrombie's own encounter with breast cancer
forms the core of this book. She tells of her fear and anger, her
family's love and support, the indignity and isolation of the disease
and the eventual bonding with others in the Wellness community, where
she holds the workshops which inspired this book. She is able to capture
the humor in even the darkest moments.
You won't be able to put it down. It's a real page turner.
4 tracks woven together to make soul centering music ..............2002-09-19
A natural gift to oneself, friends who are on their own journey, and caregivers.
"Writing out the Storm" is an exploration of the journey through life threatening illness and the identity, meaning, joy and personal mastery that may come from it. It draws the reader in.
It has four tracks - each hope filled while reality based
1) The author's own story which wonderfully unfolds, is masterfully told, and woven together with her selections of
2) vivid descriptions from other authors and public figures who bring to bear, through their own unique presence and communications skills, the essence of steps along the journey.
3) gems of real time writing responses by her "ordinary" workshop participants. Some of which so connect with you that you find yourself reading them over, again and again.
4) Direct and sometimes playful trigger questions which invite each reader to explore their own journey and writing.
"Writing out the Storm" is a stirring read that can't be put down, yet must be put down from time to time, as it takes the reader to their core and back.
If you have any doubts just read the chapter headings and imagine the gifts to be found within each.
Writing Out The Storm.......2002-09-14
This is an extremely sensitively and well written book about an increasingly common and yet delicate and difficult subject. While the medical specialists are doing their best to deal with the physical aspects of this unwelcome arrival into our own life or the life of a loved one, what do we do about the equally important aspect of the emotional, spiritual and psychic effects?
Using her own personal experience to provide a path to examine the many anxieties and traumas through what was an eventual successful outcome for her the author provides inspiration from famous authors and people like the rest of us that end up providing comfort, insight and even humor into a situation that once seemed simply hopeless.
It may seem awkward or even trivial to write to one of the chapter questions until after you do one but the insight, the relief and the understanding at the end can make this aspect of the book as valuable as a simple reading of an important entry into the library on this important subject.

Very Special Teacher and Very good writer.......2006-02-17
Rebecca merriman was my High School teacher at one time. I read her book and was touched by it. She is a special lady. True to the heart. very helpful to others. Shes an inspiration to me. I love you rebecca.
What a journey of a journaler!.......2003-03-05
If there is any book that shows how keeping a journal can save your life, it is WRITING OUT THE STORM. Yes, it's a hard one to read, yet Rebecca Mitchell Merriman's enthusiasm for life & her attention to detail shine through. Yes, it is full of the angst & turmoil of mental illness, yet embedded in each & every chapter are the kernels of redemption & surcease, until she can no longer control her illness.
That Rebecca Mitchell Merriman survived to tell her tale, with a lot of help from the steady companionship of her husband & their feline offspring, is undoubtedly the result of her untutored discipline at writing out her storm & the restorative power of spirit. She has gone through her trial by fire & lived to tell of it.
Very well done, both for the book & the mental disease survived!
Helped me to understand and be understanding........2002-04-19
Rebecca's book helped me to better understand the manic-depressive people in my life. The journal style gave (me)the reader a day to day view of life as a manic-depressive person. Her story is insightful, honest, heart wrenching, but also uplifting.
Rebecca's story helped me to understand that being manic-depressive is an illness, but that a ill person can still determine a path of health for their life.
A Personal Note re: Writing Out the Storm.......2001-12-20
Rebecca, I can't tell you how much insight I've gained through your beautiful, genuine, poetic words into the state of mind of family members and friends who suffer from mental illness. For many years, sufferers have gravitated to me because they seem to sense that I understand their plight and have compassion for them, having grown up in a family afflicted with a range of chemical imbalances.
Often, I've been deeply wounded by the words and choices that those closest to me who are operating from various platforms of mental distress have leveled at me. But, after reading your book which so eloquently and precisely states and chronicles your mood swings and behavioral variances, I now better realize how insignificant my external role has been in evoking negative responses from affected loved ones. What a relief for me, as one standing on the outside of this illness looking in, to discover through your account how the internal chemical triggers work in determining the subsequent behavior. From your revealing journal entries, I could clearly discern that your choices were chemically, not morally determined or driven. Also, what a comfort it was for me to hear you speak lovingly about those in your life, such as your husband and mother, who have been stable and loyal advocates during your recovery. I am greatly impressed with the virtues of strength, honesty, wisdom, compassion, and abiding faith you have skillfully woven throughout the pages of your compelling narrative.
Please know that whether or not your book becomes a best seller, you have lit a torch from the baptismal fires of your own crucible that casts an illuminating brilliance on a shadowy subject for all of us whose lives are directly or indirectly affected by chemical imbalance. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for your inspiring, precious, and heroic gift, Rebecca, and may you, like the sturdy red and yellow spring tulips mentioned in your book, always stay firmly rooted in the solidity, richness, and wellness of your sacred middle ground.
God Bless,
Stephanie McIntosh
Honest, funny, informative.......2001-10-19
Rebecca Merriman writes from the heart. She tells us that manic-depression is both an exhilirating and frightening roller coaster ride type of mental illness. It affords its suffereres with an oversized dose of happiness, confidence, and risk-taking only to plunge them into the depths of darkness and despair. Merriman writes with a "no holds barred" approach, opening the door to this mystifying disorder from which so many people suffer.
Drawing from her journals, Merriman shows through her writing how words helped put her manic depressive world in order, especially after her psychotic breaks and subsequent hospitalizations.
For anyone suffering from manic depression or who knows someone touched by this discorder, this book is an easy-to-read and enjoyable story of what can be a devastating, and sometimes deadly, illness. It offers hope by showing, from first hand experience, how the medications and counseling available today to manage it can help people live healthy lives.
