                        Not sure how I came across this book several years ago, however, I quite enjoyed it. It's a small book, and a quick and easy read, although it's not meant to be read as such.

                        Its real value is that it covers both spiritual and physical aspects of life. I wouldn't call it deeply spiritual, as in something that is profoundly life changing or written by the likes of an advanced spiritual practitioner, nonetheless, if you're a 'holistic' coach or a holistic client you'll definately find it valuable. It's loaded with practical exercises (which is great if you're a coach because you can really expand your toolkit with this one). It covers areas such as passion, vision, values, beliefs, awareness, self discovery questions, goal setting and other inner directed exercises.

                        Highly recommended for holistic coaches or people looking to self-coach from a holistic perspective.

                        If The Soul of Success were a meal, you'd ask for "seconds." The "food" is rich, but not too heavy, so you can really gorge yourself without feeling uncomfortable.

                        Sometimes I get tired just walking down the Self-Help aisle. One of the things I liked best about The Soul of Success was the gentle humor the author employed in the midst of tackling "big" topics. It, along with the pithy insights and compelling metaphors, kept me engaged and willing to do the work the author lays out.

                        If you're looking for a book that is challenging, and at the same time, entertaining, check it out!!

                        Reading a book can be very inspirational, actually applying the material can be life changing. That is what Bz helps her readers to do. Bz's combination of inspirtational, as well as rational material coupled with practical exercises, allows the reader to specifically change their behavior to increase success in all areas of their life. There can be no better cure for feeling unfocused in life than taking the time to do some real self-study. This book is a compelling guide into the reader and therefore garuntees each reader's desired results. This book puts the "self" back into self-help!

                        This compact guide is rich with tools and exercises to strategically move you forward in both your personal and professional lives. It is written as though the author is actually walking the path with you. I found profound gems throughout the book which created the space for me to explore my own life and follow my passion during career transition. Reading "Step Two - Clearing the Foundation" and dealing with limiting beliefs was a turning point for me. Once I identified and removed these my path became clear and my energy spiked. While the book has a 7 step strategy I didn't feel that I had to finish the book before I got the message. I found that each chapter stood on it's own with a profound message, case studies and exercises that I could do at my own pace. I highly recommend The Soul of Success as a guide to becoming conscious about your passions and learning how to attract success both personally and professionally.

                        In the wake of million-dollar scandals brought about by Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, and their like, Wall Street seems like the province of rampant individualism operating at the outermost extremes of self-interest and greed. But this, Mitchel Abolafia suggests, would be a case of missing the real culture of the Street for the characters who dominate the financial news.

                        Making Markets, an ethnography of Wall Street culture, offers a more complex picture of how the market and its denizens work. Not merely masses of individuals striving independently, markets appear here as socially constructed institutions in which the behavior of traders is suspended in a web of customs, norms, and structures of control. Within these structures we see the actions that led to the Drexel Burnham and Salomon Brothers debacles not as bizarre aberrations, but as mere exaggerations of behavior accepted on the Street.

                        Abolafia looks at three subcultures that co-exist in the world of Wall Street: the stock, bond, and futures markets. Through interviews, anecdotes, and the author's skillful analysis, we see how traders and New York Stock Exchange "specialists" negotiate the perpetual tension between short-term self-interest and long-term self-restraint that marks their respective communities--and how the temptation toward excess spurs market activity. We also see the complex relationships among those market communities--why, for instance, NYSE specialists resent the freedoms permitted over-the-counter bond traders and futures traders. Making Markets shows us that what propels Wall Street is not a fundamental human drive or instinct, but strategies enacted in the context of social relationships, cultural idioms, and institutions--a cycle that moves between phases of unbridled self-interest and collective self-restraint.

                        3 out of 5 stars Considering Opportunism.......2006-02-25

                        Mitchel Abolafia considers the role that competition and cooperation plays among players, not only at the New York Stock Exchange, but also among other market makers such as in the commodity markets. He finds that, despite the obvious competitive nature of these markets, players in these markets also find cooperation necessary in order to create orderly markets. It is good overview, but I was hoping for a more in-depth discussion of the role that opportunism plays. It needed to draw more upon the theoretical knowledge on economic opportunism. At the same time, while it does contain a number of personal stories, I felt that the book could have given more of a day-to-day sense of how players in these markets interact and view each other. So in one sense it lacks the academic underpinnings that would have made it more appealing to academics, and on the other hand, it lacks the detailed descriptions of the small interactions among players that would appeal to the more general reader.

                        4 out of 5 stars Great example of new economic sociology.......2004-06-08

                        This book discusses the types of control (aka restraint) the author found in three settings of traders ('market makers'): the futures market, the bond market, and the stock exchange. The studies were conducted at different times, and under different conditions in each market, which makes comparing across the settings somewhat difficult. However, Abolafia does a good job of addressing those issues, and does a commendable job of drawing together three otherwise very different studies into a single rubric. His conclusion--that the social context of each market plays a big role in the opportunities and constraints actors in each market face--will come as no surprise to followers of the new economic sociology (since Granovetter's 1985 embeddedness article). But even other readers will find Abolafia's evidence quite convincing on this point. He uses his ethnographic data, collected over a decade, to demonstrate how market actors are embedded in social context.

                        When I used this in an undergraduate Sociology of Work class, most students did not catch the distinctions Abolafia made between the various settings. I tried using this with Simpson's work on types of social control in the workplace (direct, hierarchical, bureaucratic, occupational, etc), and while students saw some connections, they did not get the fine distinctions Abolafia made which I had hoped they would, since his comparison across market settings forms a core element of his argument.

                        NOTE: the editorial reviews by the library journal and book list, above, don't apply to this book - wrong book, they're for another book, ie they're in the wrong place.

                        Ok, on to the "Winning in Mutual Funds" by Jay Schabacker.

                        - Half of the book is out of date. It has data on Funds at the time it was written.

                        - The other half is just outstanding, and makes the book a worthwile read.

                        - It includes a 'market riskometer' (my term) which is very fine indeed. As close to a the nutshell as you can get and still be eminently usuable. Makes the book worthwile all by itself.

                        - Also includes a cogent explanation of the business cycle, which again, makes the book a worthwile buy all on it's on own. I've never seen the business cycle explained in such an easily acquirable way. Not only that, but for the budding market timer it is the bee's knees or the cat's meow, if you prefer. Puts you on top of the macro economic picture in a couple of hours of reading.

                        - Both the cycle and and the riskometer can be used to time the market, by themselves or in combo. Again, great stuff.

                        - Portfolio allocation: There are a couple of questionaires which, should you take them, will allow you to construct your portfolio allocation. Again, great stuff. Easier on the eye, and more comprehensive than, say MorningStar, etc, or similiar online venues. Although one will need to use something of the sort to pick individual funds, since as i mentioned previously, the individual fund data is out of date.

                        Overall, this is a book for those that might find asset allocation attractive, a proven concept as it's been found to be more than 60% of gains as opposed to stock picking which tends to be around 20% of gains. You'll find the book interesting if you believe in market timing, a concept that has not been proven but on the face of it seems eminently sensible. You'll find the book interesting if you want to invest when risk is lowest and be less invested when risk may be highest,oddly enough a contrarian concept. Here I don't know what the consensus is, but being less invested when the risk is highest will limit downside, on the other hand it can definitely limit upside should a bull occur and one is partially on the sidelines.

                        Read the book, well worth time and treasure. I recommend it. There are hundres of books you can skip, but read this one and you'll be one step ahead.

                              Due Diligence for Global Deal Making is one of the most enlightening and comprehensive books of its kind. Editor and contributor Arthur Rosenbloom has identified a group of thoughtful, experienced due diligence practitioners who describe the process from seven different points of view. The process is covered both from an in-bound and an out-bound standpoint. Despite the diversity of perspectives, the book maintains a consistent style and voice and refrains from undue repetition.

                              Each of the seven substantive chapters looks at a business using a slightly different lens: strategic, operational, financial and accounting, legal, tax, organizational and, oddly but perhaps most interestingly, the Internet. Scattered through the chapter are cautionary tales of what can go wrong in the real world if the practitioner or the client cuts corners. At the end of each chapter is a series of charts and lists which sets forth the subjects of investigation, often with indications of where to find the information or how it is important to the evaluation of the target.

                              For anyone who has to conduct, supervise or coordinate due diligence, this overview is remarkably helpful. For the young attorney, accountant or business strategist, Due Diligence provides a veritable Bible for his or her own due diligence. But more importantly, the book informs the reader how the information gleaned fits into the overall process.

                              Rosenbloom's brief but enlightening look at the due diligence world post 9/11 is among the most compelling parts of the book. This section alone can be worth the price of the book. The possible effects of terrorism or war on a business, in concrete terms, or on the material adverse change or force majeure clauses of a contract are sobering and helpful.

                              Describing due diligence from seven points of view and then domestic and foreign aspects on top of that is a tall order. This informative book is a remarkable, and even entertaining accomplishment...

                              As with marriage, the success rate for global deal-making should give the wise investor pause. Most such mergers and acquisitions do not increase shareholder value. Even with the fallout from the burst bubble still landing all over the place, the juggernaut of globalization is such that international deals still manage to engender a lot of passion; it seems the grass is always greener on the other side of the border. Business leaders know that sometimes the riskiest move is the one they decide not to make, since a good strategic acquisition can ensure your company's survival. For these reasons, interest in cross-border transactions will probably remain strong, as industries consolidate and as global economic barriers collapse. However, deals that involve foreign accounting and legal practices can be absolutely perilous without expert professional guidance. This clearly written, thorough compilation can help you avoid making a bad decision and improve your odds of success. We from getAbstract strongly recommend it to anyone involved in (or considering getting involved in) global deal making.

                              Doing mergers and acquisitons that create value for shareholders is harder than ever. It is even more difficult to do this in a multi-national environment. The compelxities of tax, accounting, securities laws and the regulatory differences add enormous complexities to the already huge challenges of just getting the stragegy right and executing it!!

                              This handbook, Due Dilignece for Global Deal Making, dramatically increases the odds of doing a deal better. Many experts believe that deals are made or broken in the due diligence phase. That is is where you figure out how much to pay, and the valuation is totally dependent on what you find out and what questions you ask.

                              This book covers it all from strategic imperative to tax rules. It also has an excellent chapter on my own area of expertise, people and organizational fit. I found the section on beginning to evaluate the fit of the corporate cultures particularly helpful. We think the success of true mergers are highly influenced by the cultural fit.

                              I would highly recommend this book to anyone practicing in this area, regardless of their area of expertise, as it gives them context for all of the other important, areas.
