Excellent book that I think would appeal to all readers. I in particular enjoyed the discussions on motivating employees, sales psychology, patnership compatability - Human Engineering Laboratory (wish I could find some information on this organization), and how important it is to not sit on ones knowledge. We have all gone through high's and low's and should be sharing those experiences with other's, whether in books or lectures or serving in government.

Bob Thomas has rewritten the definition of entrepreneur. He leads the reader through a very thorough process from concept to high productivity to selling the corporation. Thomas draws from over four decades of experience.
Immediately one recognizes that Mr. Thomas sees certain requirements as essential for a person who is considering an entrepreneurial venture. Personal sacrifice is critical for those wishing to follow his steps in corporate design. His expertise is in the field of chemical engineering and design. At times it was somewhat difficult sorting through the heavily detailed engineering stories. His passion for his field is obvious, but this can sometimes be confusing to the reader expecting a "how to" guide.
Thomas concludes his book with a comprehensive question and answer section. This tutorial is helpful for gaining a more complete understanding of his entrepreneurial process.
I admire Mr. Thomas for the success he has found in designing and running his own businesses. Anybody thinking about starting a business or is currently a business owner will benefit greatly from the experiences Bob Thomas shares in his book, The Fail-Proof Enterprise.
Foundational Business Principles Are Still The Best Approach.......2003-10-14
As an entrepreneur, I've had the opportunity to start three companies in the last decade. As luck would have it, I used the principles Thomas outlines here. But I wish I'd had the wisdom this book offers ten years ago; it would have made growing those companies much easier.
This is a must read for anyone who is even contemplating life as an entrepreneur. Beyond the "look in the mirror test," Thomas stresses the importance of sales and marketing as key drivers for success. The book is very well written and presented in an easy-to-read tone that moves the reader along at a good pace.
Perhaps the most significant point is the book's relevance. After the dotcom blowout, this book reminds us of what has always worked for successful businesses: the basic principles of good judgement and common sense coupled with hard work and commitment to a qualified team. In the end, there is no rush to riches that really works. Thomas reminds us of that and spins a good tale of his successes.

My passion is to research, collect and create new dishes all the time. I'm always looking for something different. And this book brings a high level of intense flavors to the table. If you love spices you'll love this. I've never been to the restaurant but after having this book..I'm ready want to go to the restaurant! Excellent soup stock made with fennel and cloves, roasted chicken with clove, Sweet Pea soup with smoked paprika oil, spicy Harissa sauce, pickled lemons and Rosemary flat bread. The Rosemary flan is exquisite! Book is on nice glossy paper. Recipes are laid out well and will motivate you to try the recipes. Numerous pictures in book but not on all recipes.Instructions on how long you can keep sauces are very helpful. I got this book because there were alot of raving reviews on this book. And today I add one more 5 stars to this book's buckle. I salute you El Farol!
For TAPAS lovers.......2006-12-17
El Farol is one of those cookbooks that makes you hungry when you read it. Chef James Campbell Caruso has an easy going, conversational style that feels like you're in a tapas bar talking with friends, eagerly waiting for the next delicious dish to arrive.
El Farol has a modern look and feel, with bright, vibrant photos of beautiful dramatic platings. The recipes are mostly grounded in classic Spanish ingredients and flavors (chorizo, paprika, etc.), but also incorporate non-traditional flavors such as various Southwestern chiles. I recently cooked the Grilled Honey-Caper Shrimp, and Smoked Salmon Potato Cakes. Both were easy to make and delicious.
If I was choosing one definitive tapas cookbook, I'd probably choose Penelope Casas' wonderful "Tapas: The Little Dishes of Spain". But El Farol, with its' more modern look and feel, is an excellent companion to Casas' classic.

El Farol is a favorite restaurant in our family. I bought four copies of this book for family members, and every recipe I have tried is delicious. Out of all the cookbooks I own, this is the one I use the most. The glossary of Spanish ingredients and sources is especially helpful.

I am living in Italy, close to Parma, so I am used to good cooking and food. When I buy El farol I wish to learn to cook some spanish dishes, but what I have found is more. Recepies are written in an easy way, step by step, and it is impossible to make a mistake. There are a lot of suggestions and I have immediatly tried to cook Caldo Pescado and Gambas al Alcaparra.

El Farol is the oldest restaurant and bar in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Frescoes by Alfred Morang decorate the walls of the 1835 adobe. In this eclectic setting, oil paintings by Roland Van Loon dance across your vision as you take pleasure in the Spanish Cuisine.
For quite some time I've wondered about using smoked paprika and Chef James Campbell Caruso uses this ingredient in many of his recipes. Have you ever wondered how to make those preserved lemons? There is a recipe with simple ingredients like sea salt, cinnamon, cloves, garlic and olive oil. Once the lemons are preserved, you store them in oil for six months to a year. The Preserved Lemon Butter Sauce calls for 1 tablespoon chopped preserved lemons. This sauce can be served over salmon.
One of the most intriguing recipes is for the El Farol Pincho Spice Mix that makes use of all sorts of spices and herbs I've never blended together before like, smoked paprika and oregano. You rub the unique spices on anything you can grill.
If you love blue cheese, you may want to try to find "Cabrales." Most of the recipes do use readily available ingredients although you may have to hunt for saffron in your grocery store or order it online.

The picture in this book that made me terribly hungry was the Ensalada de Uvas con Queso. A grape salad with fresh mozzarella. I had wondered about using the small balls of mozzarella and here is the recipe.
Pantry items you may need include: sherry vinegar, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, sea salt, sweet smoked paprika, Mexican oregano, saffron, star anise, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, olive oil, masa harina, raisins and of course, lots of fresh garlic.
Growing fresh herbs is optional and rosemary is one of the herbs I still need to plant this year. Once it is planted, I'm making the Lemon-Rosemary Flan. I have a feeling we will be eating a little better this summer than last! The food in the El Farol cookbook is comforting, delicious and at times a little exotic. Fortunately dried figs are not difficult to find and most of the spices can be found at the grocery store or here at Amazon.

This was one of the most boring dully written books that I have ever read. While the events are not without interest; the change over 3 seasons of a village in Spain from being almost medievally backward to one being transformed by the onset of tourism, the characters are flat and unbelievable. Maybe if you like fishing it would appeal but otherwise I would steer clear. Sorry to be so negative

describes a lost world--a tiny village on the Spanish Mediterranean coast subsisting on fishing and the harvesting of cork. The book is simple and evocative. The reader creates the tragedy himself or herself with the certain knowledge that Lewis is detailing a world, and way of life, that have now ceased to exist.

Very good overall book on Mutual Funds.......2006-05-16
Just to provide some context, I recently checked out three books on mutual funds from my library. Of the three, this was by far the easiest to read, most informative, and well focused of the bunch. She does not tell you what fund to pick, but rather some rules for investing. She has a chapter in there for beginners to help understand the building blocks of the funds. If you are beyond that point, just skip over it. She also includes what other strategies big name investors have towards investing (index funds, upside trading, gold, sector funds, etc...) While she does throw in some opinion, it still remains objective for the most part. I want to point out again on how easy this book reads compared with most. This book has enough good stuff in it that I plan on buying it for my personal collection.

I pay my 5% to a professional and FINALLY have a book that helps me grasp the basic concepts and terminology he uses so blythely. It has made our discussions more profitable and less time consuming while lowering my frustration level. I can return to this book over and over as often as necessary until an idea sticks. I find it very useful to review basics when my quarterly reports arrive. The book has allowed me to be more confident in discussions with my professional advisor. The format of this book is perfect for beginners. I read several mutual fund books from the library before selecting this book as the first to own.
The best beginner book on mutual funds I've found........2002-05-27
I checked out many books on mutual funds and investing from the library. This is the one I kept going back to, because its easy-to-read "dos" and "donts" format got right to the point. That might sound too pat, but the advice given within that simple format is right on and consistant with other reliable sources I've checked. There are also more sections beyond the dos & donts for those who want to go further in depth. The advice is basic and sensible - such as what factors to look for in a fund, how to evaluate performance and costs of funds, and recommended further reading. I plan to buy a copy so I don't have to keep going to the library!
Great fundamentals and starting point.......2001-07-31
This is a great starting point for people who want to know more about investing, and particulary those who want to do it themselves. Rowland packs a lot of useful investing do's and don't, with easy to follow explanations. She stresses the key concepts such as asset and risk allocation, dollar-cost-averaging, and "buy low, sell high" (which, although a cliché, is often ignored). She examines all kind of mutual funds, from stocks, to bonds, to gold, to blend. One drawback is the book is about 3 years old, which hurts the information a little. However, this book can provide investing knowledge that applies any time, whether you believe in the "New Economy" or not.

This is the only book on mutual funds that I have read. It had provided me with basics and with the places to look up mutual fund info. While not necessarily breathtaking read it is informative. The small format is also a plus (I do a lot of my reading in subway cars).

I read Full Steam Ahead! for the second time this week. I had originally purchased the book last winter because my boss wanted us to create a shared vision. Everyone in our department read the book and then we followed the process described by the authors. It has been an amazing experience for all of us. I saw my boss shift from someone who had good intentions but tended to be over-controlling and mistrustful to someone who was willing to let all us to take charge and make decisions. Because we all shared the same vision and values, we all began to trust each other more also. The atmosphere at work is, well... all I can say is I look forward to going to work each day. We have fun and are more productive than ever. The quality of our work has increased immeasurably and we get great feedback from our customers.
Which leads me to why I read the book again. The first time I read it, I read it to get the instructions and learn the concepts for how to create a vision at work. Having lived the results, I decided to read it again to see how I could improve my own life. I remembered there was advice in the book for how to apply it at a personal level, but hadn't paid a lot of attention to it at the time. After finishing the book, I realized that I have been doing a lot of these things. So that was confirming. And it helped me get a sense of what else I need to be doing. Here are a few of the ideas from the book that I think are very helpful-- but you really should read the book because there are so many more helpful ideas than I could write about here. And, it's a fun, easy book to read!
1. Purpose: As human beings, a deep sense of purpose gives our lives more meaning. Some people find their purpose through religion. Others through social service. Others through arts and other forms of self-expression. We are each unique individuals and no one can tell us what our purpose is. We need to discover it ourselves. Putting it into words and writing it down, helps us to get clear and to stay focused on our purpose. It may take time to get clear about your purpose. Write something down, read it over time, revise it as things become more clear.
2. Values: We are hold deeply beliefs about what is right and wrong. When we are clear about our values and consciously use them to guide us, we make decisions that we feel good about living with. It is important to identify the top 3 to 5 values.
3. Picture of the future: It's not enough to just be clear about our purpose and values. It is powerful to close your eyes and imagine what it looks like when you are fulfilling your purpose and living your values. Sports trainers understand the power of mental imagery to enhance performance. Creating pictures of what it actually looks like forces us into a proactive mindset that enables us to move forward more easily.
4. Goals are only milestones. They are short-term. Don't confuse them with your vision. You may need to change goals as your circumstances change. Your vision is something that will guide you over time. It may change, but mostly to become more clear.
5. Take action. As you take a step, the next one will become clear. As you become clear about your values, live by them. As you become clear about your purpose, find ways to fulfill it. You can plan forever. Living is about acting. Mistakes are inevitable. The only problem with mistakes is when you don't learn from them. If you learn from them, then set your sights again on your vision and set your path again.

Full Steam Ahead! is the best book I've read this year. My husband and I own our own business. After both reading the book, we sat down together and created a vision for our business. It was exciting and helped us get really focused. We were then able to discuss it with our employees. Their ideas made our vision even richer. And, to our delight, created an amazing amount of energy. We are all working so much better together now. I can't say more. You need to read the book yourself and then you'll understand.
However, I would like to add that we also created a vision for our family with our two children (ages 11 and 15). Once again, it was an amazing experience. The kind of discussion we had was so different from anything than we had done before. It really helped us all understand and appreciate each others' viewpoints better and to also understand how much we share the same values. (Big relief!)
So, even if you are not in business, I highly recommend this book! It can be used in so many ways.

Full steam ahead is a phenomenal book. It was critical to my understanding of vision. Prior to reading to this book, my understanding of vision was fuzzy at best, limited to what I know in scripture. Of vision, scripture states (Habakkuk 2:2) that we should write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he that reads it might run with it. The Hebrew word for vision, `chazown', indicates that the vision is a mental picture. Beyond that, I had never been clear on the elements of a vision, neither did I have a clear idea of how to craft a vision statement.
Now I understand that vision is all about knowing who you are (clear purpose), where you are going (picture of the future), and what will guide your journey (values). Your values guide you when you hit opposition or obstacles. I have been able to use these concepts and others presented in the book to craft a vision that is energizing and provides focus and direction. I have been able to explain it so that others want to support me. And, I have been amazed at the results.

Microsimulation Modelling of Taxation and the Labour Market reports new research on behavioral microsimulation modeling of tax and transfer systems. Its aims are twofold. First, the book discusses the rationale for the basic modeling approach adopted and provides information on econometric methods used to estimate behavioral relationships. Secondly, it describes the Melbourne Institute Tax and Transfer Simulator (MITTS) in detail, explaining its main features, installation and use.
After providing a broad review of tax modeling, the authors review alternative approaches to the analysis of labor supply behavior, discuss the main components of behavioral microsimulation models and present econometric results concerning wage functions and preferences. They go on to provide a detailed description of MITTS, which was constructed by the authors in order to examine the implications of tax reforms in Australia.

"Co-operacy", say the authors, "is a word we coined to describe the technology of collective or consensus decision making as distinct from democracy or autocracy. By technology we mean beliefs, values, methods, processes and techniques that enable collective decision making to work successfully"
The authors say that their purpose in this book is 'to explore and develop ways in which working together co-operatively as peers can become easier, more effective and more accessible'. They succeed. It is well structured to open and address important questions about working in relationship, and it contains useful tools and exercises to help to develop cooperative working. Perhaps the main virtue of the book is its simplicity and directness.
The three parts first lay out the underlying ideas, then explore the relationships within which a peer approach can be applied and finally offer over 60 exercises designed to help in developing peer partnerships.
The underlying belief on which their processes are based is that 'the best decisions for social organisation are made by involving everyone affected by the decision'. There are very strong parallels between the philosophies and processes that they advocate and those that are necessary to successful search conferences (see authors like Weisbord "Discovering Common Ground' and Bunker and Alban 'Large Group Interventions'). The difference is that Hunter and her colleagues are exploring how widely these beliefs and processes can be used across the whole range of decision making and interaction.
