My son in law read the book and passed the title on to me. It's a great quick read with information applicable in all areas of ones life.
Carrots are good stuff!.......2002-01-31
This book has been most insightful. I find that it re-inforced some of the tools I have already put in place as well gave me many more ideas. Managing Staff does not have to be ridget and cold, including them in dession making does not make you weak but strengthens your own work ethics.
Managaing with Carrots teaces you that your Staff are functionable by their own talents, and how to reconize them as well as acknowledge what they are concretly, to them, your staff, the pillers of your company.
I would like to also add that this book was very readable and short enough to keep you reading, long enough to inform you throughly.
A Fine Example of Self Promotion.......2001-11-12
Anyone with any business sense knows that recognition is important. Company owners and human resource professionals know that an entire industry has been built around this technique. There is an abundant supply of consultants, authors, and professional speakers touting the value of recognition, as well as companies that design recognition programs and sell the products that are used in recognition.
This book is unabashedly written by two senior executives from O. C. Tanner Recognition Company. The copyright is held by the company, rather than the authors. I approached this book with the expectation that it was designed to be a thinly-disguised promotion of O. C. Tanner's products and services. I wasn't disappointed. This perspective is not a bad thing, and a lot of valuable information is conveyed in the 111 pages.
I was a bit overpowered by the theme of the book: Managing with Carrots. The illustration on the front cover is a carrot trophy. Every page number is accompanied by a carrot-in orange print. All the call-out boxes and chapter subheads are printed in orange. Even the flyleaf of the book is orange. I'd have to label this overwhelming use of carrot orange as overkill. Even the start-of-chapter quote from Bugs Bunny was a bit too cute.
Part One is a chapter entitled "Carrot Seeds." Part Two gives us Carrot Planting, Carrot Cultivation; Presenting Carrots, Symbolic Carrots, Communicating about Carrots, and Creating a Carrot Culture. Part Three is Carrot Harvest and Part Four is Starting Your Own Carrot Crop. The flow is to present the recognition concept, explain how to build a recognition program, then how to reap the benefits. A number of case studies sprinkled through the book provide an illustrative enhancement.
If you accept the infomercial nature of this book, you can gain some helpful guidance.
Not just for CEO's.......2001-08-24
Though this book may at first seem narrowly tailored for the business management market, I found it helpful as a middle school teacher in generating new ideas on how to extend and develop my own student recognition program. Using frequent examples, sidebars and graphic information, Gostick and Elton help identify what so many employees and students are hungry for in today's sometimes anonymous society, appreciation for one's efforts. Recommended for leaders of any organization.

Rice strikes the critical balance between review, criticism and prescription of important topics in health care economics. For example, in chapter 5 he refers to the major contributions of libertarian (Nozick) utilitarian and normative (Rawls) thinkers on the question of health equality and health resource allocation. His prescription is relatively egalitarian, but he offers a thorough discussion of alternative ideas. His review of the details of health economics (and the unique challenges that health poses to anyone interested in treating it as a commodity) are insightful. An excellent reader for anyone interested in reconsidering the market model of health care.

Dr. Rice's book is an outstanding analysis of the realities that exist within our competitive market economy. Other reviewers of this text have failed to comprehend the complexities inherent in health care and health economics. The competitive market economy in many instances works in opposition to issues of health, as Dr. Rice eloquently points out throughout his book, explaining many of the health policy dilemmas that our society is currently confronted with .

Rice's primary purpose of this short book appears to be to counter Paul Feldstein's Health Care Economics text. Mr. Rice must have spent all weekend writing this disappointing book, which meanders through the whole spectrum of health care socialism.

This is one of the better food anthologies I have read. The quality of writing here is so consistently good that I suspect the hand of an especially competent editor is involved.
Among my favorite essays in this collection are Pooja Makhijani's School Lunch, in which a girl is embarrassed that her lunch box contains weird food, until a new girl comes to class. Also Camille Cusumano's Big Night, about a meal in Sicily that seems at first like heaven, until it turns aout to be quite the opposite. Rachel Fudge's remembrances of her parents' cocktail hour contrasts nicely with Christina Henry de Tessan's memories of family dinners in Paris.
One essay even made me cringe, the repulsive After Birth by Alisa Gordaneer. Powerful stuff.
Good, and what else?.......2004-02-10
Good for you! I am a big fan of anthologies, and this is one of the best put out by Seal Press. I particularly loved Amanda Sullivan's "My Mother's Kitchen," which so poingnantly caputures the part food can play in critical relationships. Screamingly funny with just the right touch of gross was Ayun Halliday's ode to working in a dive of an Italian place. Good work, Editor Miller. I'm off for a snack...
Fun, provocative, appetite inducing.......2003-11-11
Kate Sekules is a smart, delightful writer. I've been reading her for years in Food & Wine, so it's no surprise that her piece in this collection is wise and witty. And Amanda Hesser has been making food fun in the New York Times. Any book that contains the epicurean sagacity of these two women is sure to be good.

Pleasure expierence to read it.......2006-07-30
Why is it pleasurable to read this book ? Because you have the impression of sitting with former President Nixon having him telling you his experience as a politician, truly revealing, with simple but skilled language, anedoctes of his life and his mind about a lot of topics.
I really enjoyed having this presidential chat with President Nixon and every once in a while I will surely have some other ones by reading some passages of " In the Arena", a memoir narrated not in chronological order, but according to certain matters he deals with.
The Thinking of an intelligent man.......2006-03-11
This books tells you very interesting things about Politics and Life in general. Definitely, Richard Nixon was a very intelligent man.
Something I find fascinating and mysterious is that the most intelligent President of USA has been the only one to be dismissed, the one who obtained one of the most landslide victory of USA's electoral history (1972) and the one who had more enemies in the Press.
Predictably, lacks perspective.......2005-09-06
An autobiographical account is always a dicey proposition, and in order to succeed, the author requires a certain amount of objectivity, as well as superior writing skills. Unfortunately, this displays neither.
I'm not here to bash Nixon politically, but I do have to say that the book comes off as extremely self-serving. Nixon's account of Nixon's life just doesn't come off as honest. I think that when he wrote it, he was still too entrenched in a persona that needed to take public opinion into account. The result is a lot of treacly, ponderous prose that comes off like the presidential equivalent of a Hallmark television special.
The one saving grace of the book is that it gives us many little anecdotes that demonstrate the minutiae of the daily life of a President of the United States, and that is indeed interesting. But other than that, there's no reason to pick this up.
Disappointing - Not a Kiss and Tell Book.......2005-07-06
First of all, I began this book after reading his "No More Viet Nams" which was top notch. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed with "In The Arena". Nixon covers much about his life in politics and gives us his personal views on life, his wife, family, friends, television, books, and so on. Reading this book was much like listening to your favorite, wise, ol' grandad talking about his life and what he experienced. IF you are not interested in that, don't read this book. You'll be disappointed. Personally, I was more interested in his pointed comments about politics, foreign policies, political leaders, war, and so on but there wasn't enough of that.
Personal and Analytical.......2004-05-04
Since the former president granted my request and sent me a personal autographed copy absolutely free I am biased about this book. I think it is well-written, insightful, personal, and philosophical all in one package. His approach to life was essentially life it to the hilt, have something to show for your existence, hence the title. He was not hesitant to enter "the arena." In fact, his life was lived in the arena. President Nixon was both a thinker and doer.
While he lived adventurously on two levels, the mental and physical, he was somewhat neglectful of the spiritual arena. He talks about his Christian parents, especially his mother, but he doesn't address spiritual matters in his personal life in any great detail. I know he was on friendly terms with both Billy Graham and Norman Vincent Peale. I'm sure they had some Christian influence on him.
In this book, the president looks back on life as an elder statesman. Some of the advice he gives is pertinent to any arena. When he talks about living with a purpose that transcends self, the focus is beyond political. He devotes time to the human condition, overcoming personal challenges, victories, defeats, and renewals. This is a well-thought out book. Any open minded reader would be stimulated by it.
