While the purpose of antitrust policy is to protect competition, competition that removes all restraints may defeat its own goal. Dudley H. Chapman, in a revisionist analysis of antitrust history and policy, argues that our country needs practical government policy to replace our doctrinaire and unrealistic antitrust rules. The "Chicago School" and the economic theory on which it is based are rejected as an intellectual scandal. Competition is an end in itself and it is not the primary purpose of anti-trust to lower consumer prices. Chapman, a former antitrust official, uses historical materials to build his case for a new and practical antitrust policy. He proposes that we look not to Chicago but to Europe for our model. Compared to their older, more rigid U.S. counterparts, European laws are far more rationally conceived and realistic, Chapman says. Europeans believe that some restraints on competitive freedom, both private and government, are necessary to preserve the ongoing competitive process. The book develops the thesis that for current U.S. policy to mature or "molt" its rigid shell we need to remove criminal penalties and prohibit abuses of market-dominating positions. Anyone in the U.S. or Europe who is active in antitrust and related issues of regulatory and trade policy--lawyers, economists, government officials in the executive branch and in Congress, academicians and students--will find in this book an important and controversial agenda.

A very great book. A must-have book for advanced pianists........2000-08-13

This book is a part of 2-book set. Both books are must-haves for advanced pianists. The quoality of printing is good. Notes are clear. Transcendental etudes are in book 1 and Paganini Etudes are in book 2. Do not hesitate to buy this book if you are fond of Liszt. You must be an advanced pianist to be able to play most pieces in the book.

busoni edition.......2000-07-23

The so good edition of the entire piano music of Franz Liszt ( it's not really complete, sadly) made by the pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni. It's not easy to find this edition. Dover offers just the complete etudes(in two volumes). As usual for Dover, not first quality printing, but for this price it's a bargain and a good complement for the Budapest edition.

I purchased this book after reading about him on a website. I feel that his advice was interesting for the novice investor. However for experienced traders, i think that the advice here is redundant.

Dr. Hendlin's book should be found on every serious investor's bookcase. The increased volatility in today's markets demands a psychological reference targeted specifically to investors. The "Fear and Greed Trilogy" section of the book provides an excellent framework for understanding emotions and actions during dramatic market movements, both up and down. Investors will find that this book hits home!

Rationalization at its best........2000-08-22

This is a compulsive person's dream. To have a psychologist tell them its OK; That they can master their compulsive behavior and still get to dive in head first into the substance of their choice, trading. Definitely marketed toward novice day traders who have so much to risk. I was disappointed.

Hendlin's new book is simply the best at addressing the mental and emotional aspects of trading that has yet appeared in the trading literature. He is the first to look at moment-to-moment thoughts, feelings, images, and fantasies which arise while one sits at the monitor watching quotes and executing trades. I found much of value in his analysis of such topics as balancing fear and greed; not getting caught in perfectionistic thinking; learning the yielding method of self-control; dealing with the information overload; and what the thinking of short-term traders has to offer long-term investors. In addition, Hendlin offers readers a typology of trading styles according to personality types that will be of benefit for all those who have never considered how their personality relates to their trading style. This book is easy to read, not requiring a background in psychology to make use of its concepts and tools. Hendlin offers numerous examples from his own trading experience that make the concepts come to life. His willingness to share some of his own trading mistakes and explain them in psychological terms adds to his presentation. The author might have included some graphs to help make some of his examples more obvious. This book is not for those who are looking for a primer of trading systems,or technical or fundamental stock analysis. Nor is it aimed at those seeking simple answers to difficult questions. But it will defintely make you re-think some of your basic assumptions about the trading game.I now have a greater appreciation for the complicated and vital role of the mental side of trading. The book jacket maintains this is a "one-of-a-kind" book in the investing world. What I initially thought had to be hyperbole ended up being accurate. I've never read one quite like this before. And it has the single best cover graphic on an investment-related book I've ever seen. Highly recommended to both active traders and serious long-term investors.

This One is a Keeper.......2000-06-29

Dr.Hendlin's new book on the psychology of online trading hit the spot with me.It was just what I was looking for. He offers relevant and useful psychological concepts to help both short-term traders and long-term investors deal with the strong emotions and wild thoughts that are part of the online trading experience. The book is written in a smooth conversational tone that makes digesting the ideas presented easy even for those with little psychology background. Hendlin does an excellent job of presenting a fair and balanced view of such issues as: dealing with fear and greed; feeling in control of emotions; how to create a home trading environment that is optimal for trading; and how not to get caught in trying to be a perfectionistic trader. What I really liked about this book is that the author does an admirable job of addressing the most important issues for both short-term active traders as well as long-term investors. Hendlin made me more aware of how fantasies and inner chatter affect my trading. He offers numerous exercises for readers to help them become more aware of themselves while trading. This is the first book on the psychology of trading that I didn't put down because it was boring or because if offered only obvious platitudes by traders with no real background in psychology. This guy definitely knows what he is talking about. I would have liked the author to share more of how Eastern thinking relates to trading--a topic he teases us with but to which he only devotes the final chapter.

Prominent uninvited cash takeover bids averaged 17 a year for the period 1985 - 1988. There were 6 in 1989 and 2 in 1990. For the years 1991 -1999 they averaged 1.2 a year. In these carefully reasoned dialogues, Edmund Kelly also examines the impact of corporate raids on the business community and society. Kelly believes the ideal corporation translates capital and human energy into a community service institution that is ultimately greater than the sum of its parts.

Brilliant Review of Hostile Takeover Strategies.......2005-06-08

This fascinating book is ready-made for law school or business school courses in corporate governance or m&a. The dialogue format is especially suitable as stimulating background for further class or seminar discussion and research. This book is as current now as when first published in 1987: way ahead of its time and a testament to the eminence and ability of the author as one of the foremost experts and inventors in the field of hostile takeovers. His authority was recognized by Harvard University, which houses his collection of news and files on hostile takeovers going back to 1969 in the Historical Collections department of Baker Library, Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

This volume is the only book to provide a comparative and systematic analysis of the tax systems of the major industrialized nations (the G7 plus Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden) over the last decade. An introductory chapter compares the tax levels, structures, and systems of the ten, notes differences between government preoccupations in mid-1980s and mid-1990s, and unusual tax features of particular countries, before speculating on likely changes in the remaining years of the century. In the ten main chapters, individual national experts providein a standardized format to facilitate comparisondetails of all the significant taxes and important changes in relation to specific policy considerations such as fiscal deficits, savings and investment incentives, income distribution effects, and administrative and compliance costs. The country chapters conclude with a summary of recent and prospective tax reforms, which in each case takes account of the underlying economic conditions and political climate.

Thoughts About George Washington.......2004-12-17

This is an interesting and worthwhile little book that is a quick read. It is essentially a collection of quotations and short essays from famous people concerning George Washington. The book is divided into three sections, with the first devoted to thoughts of his contemporaries, the third is thoughts from modern thinkers, and the middle section devoted to everyone in between.

The essays are informative, with the first section being the most important. It seems that now most people have an idea that Washington and the other founding fathers were a cohesive group of men who saw eye to eye on most important issues, but that is more a myth than reality. This book details some of the differences of opinion, particularly between Jefferson and Hamilton, and even includes quotes from people like Thomas Paine which are not particularly flattering to Washington. (In fairness, Paine held a personal vendetta against Washington in his later years which was not particularly objective or fair-minded.)

This book is not an in-depth study of Washington, but is interesting and worthwhile reading. It is easiest to obtain from the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, the group that saved Washington's estate from ruin.

Inpirational Memoir .......2006-11-02

This is one story that will inspire many people and give them hope for recovery from brain injuries. The author uses humor and wit and weaves his story of how he over came and coped with his "brain damge". It is a positive message about a serious concern. The book is a great read even if you do not have anyone in your lfie with brain damage - it really is about attitude and how you can cope with whatever happens to you in your life.

I totally recomend this book to all readers. It will add something to your life in a positive way. It is uplifting!

But through his carefully constructed narrative, we can "feel" his frustrations and also revel in the incremental -- yet moving forward -- progress that he makes. His is a story of great courage, hope and love; a lesson for Humanity. Thanks to Dick for sharing this moving and insightful story of life after brain surgery. Readers will laugh. They will weep. And finally, they will applaud this incredible human being. Dick demonstrates a real gift for storytelling through this book. Let's hope he delights us with "Brain Damage II".

Inspirational!!!.......2002-08-23

What can I say....I laughed, I cried (rest in peace, Shardak), and then I laughed again (out loud, alone in the room, 1 AM). I saw myself and wondered why anyone who has ever lost their car keys is not in the same program right along with the "Rehabbers". Dick shares some very personal moments with his readers (some of these things it would never occur to me to share with some of my closest friends). He really grabs you and makes you think.....and laugh....and cry.... I felt like I was sitting and sharing secrets with my best friend. Truly inspirational, in many ways!! Thanks for sharing yourself with the world!!

Brain Damage--a love story.......2002-08-03

Brain Damage is an amazing journey. Both the story and its author are testaments to the indomitableness of the human spirit in its quest for wholeness. However, the author's pilgrimage, compelling in its own right, is but a subplot to a recurring theme throughtout the book. This is a love story, marriage the way God intended it. "For better or worse, in sickness and in health"--vows often spoken but not always honored, expecially when tested the way these were. You will love this book, and you will love the way these two people love each other. Enjoy their journey, then I challenge you. See if you can ever again be angry with your spouse for ignoring the budget or failing to lower the toilet seat.
