Leadership Should be a Universal Quality.......2005-04-08

Starting from the position that leadership is multi-faceted and can be learned Mr. Dilenschneider tries to explain how Moses had or did not have particular qualities to be a good leader. The book comes from a clearly Christian perspective, but is not offensive to Jews (if you can get past his calling HaShem "the Lord God). The approach is certainly a novel one (until he started publishing other books using the same model). Mr. Dilenschneider is relatively sucessful in demonstrating that Moses has many of the qualities that Mr. Dilenschneider thinks makes one a good leader in business. It is interesting that when Mr. Dilenschneider wants to give an example of an important quality in a leader and Moses does NOT display that quality he looks for others who do display it, and tells their story as well.

This book is a helpful tool for anyone looking to do things better-in all apsects of their lives. Its refreshing to know that such things as humility, truth telling, and compassion are traits of a great leader. The advice given by Dilenschneider makes a lot of sense.

Dummies Guide to Outings in Japan.......2005-08-10

We have lived in Tokyo Japan for 2 years and just recently received this book as a gift. My family and I love it. The book explains a lot of things you will experience in a Japanese restraunt, in shops or just out walking in the city. Things that have been a mystery for 2 years have been explained, with pictures even. We liked the book so much that we have purchased a couple more copies as gifts for other Americans coming to live in Japan.

Love Sushi? You'll LOVE this book!.......2001-06-13

I LOVE sushi (my wife HATES it! :-), but there is much about eating sushi that I didn't understand....until I read this book. Wonderful pictures and great explanations for all things Japanese.

I've never been to Japan, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of this book. But the previous Amazon reviewers seem to attest that this book is fairly accurate.

If you are interested in Japanese culture (and especially sushi!) - you'll like reading this book!

What a terrible title for a wonderful book!.......2001-01-28

Betty Reynolds, an American artist who lived in Japan for six years, is NOT squeamish about sushi-or any of the other Japanese foods she lovingly illustrates and describes in this slender but well-packed sketchbook of culinary adventures in Japan.

With her bright watercolors and good-humored descriptions, Betty Reynolds brings back happy memories of many dining experiences in Japan: how to recognize a restaurant by the signs outside the door, the etiquette of eating sushi (and which of the decorative leaves are edible!), slurping noodles the Japanese way. She goes on to do the same for tempura, yakitori, sukiyaki, and dozens of other Japanese foods. Many uniquely Japanese experiences are portrayed: stopping by a Japanese pub (izakaya) where strangers are assured of a warm welcome; the joys of yatai, the open-air food stalls that show up on streets in evenings and at festivals; the pure bliss of unwinding at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn); picnicking at a cherry blossom-viewing party in the park; attending a sumo wrestling match; even how to grapple with a Japanese toilet.

A keen observer, Ms. Reynolds is enough of an "insider" to go beyond the obvious in delineating a myriad of Japanese foods, and enough of an "outsider" to remain objective in recognizing the kind of only-in-Japan zaniness that occasionally crops up (sweet potato ice cream, anyone?). Each food is identified with hand-lettered descriptions in English, Japanese roman-ji (the Roman alphabet) so you can pronounce it, and kana (the Japanese syllabary) so someone Japanese can read what it is.

Just leafing through this yummy, entertaining book makes me hungry. As I write this review, I'm itching to catch the next plane to Japan (or at least go out to the nearest Japanese pub)! This book is a great introduction to the wealth of Japanese cuisine, a fine gift or memento for travelers to Japan, and useful even to identify items-and wow the chef with your knowledge-at your local sushi bar.

Not only is this book helpful for people about to visit Japan, but as someone about to leave this wonderful country after 3 years, Ms Reynolds book is one I'll cherish as a souvenir of my time here. Her drawings are amazingly observant and accurate as well as humorous. I look forward to seeing more of her work.

Dust off your Ph.d and Try to Decipher the Options Market.......2001-05-21

An executive I respect felt that this book by one of his old professors would give great insight to Foreign Currency Option Stategies. As more of a fundamental analyst than a technician I was mostly lost. I struggled through a master's and most of a doctorate, but statistics was always a pain. Beware that advanced mathematical underpinnings are crucial to the enjoyment of the book. For the amateur who wants to understand why rocket scientists (for real) are hired from Cal Poly and MIT to run Wall Street trading programs, we;;, just keep this book near your computer when you think your day trading will beat the pros.

A Very Innovative Book........2000-06-13

This book reminds me of an interpersonal class I took at college. In one of the chapters I believe it's chapter # 8 Mr. Dombroski talks about the conscious & subconscious mind. We as Americans are so worried about proper adequate that we fail to be creative. We are subconsciously so worried about how are opinions look that we fail to be creative. Thomas W. Drombroski has written a book that literally everybody should read. This book shows the reader that they're really is no boundaries as far as being creative. Who says you can't color outside the lines? I have every intention of going back to what I've should have been doing and being creative and not worrying about how my ideas look to other people. The book is set up like a college text with excercises and examples. The book is worth the little price Amazon wants for it. The Author Mr. Thomas W. Dombroski has earned my utmost highest respect for reminding me how to be creative. It'll do the same for you. I suggest you buy it.

Fascinating study of a political odyssey.......2006-12-23

Alexander Doniphan is one of those great characters from history who learned from his mistakes about the role of government. He is one who rebelled against the demogoguery of American politics to become a true independent having experienced first-hand the results of policies he had helped push through at one time. A warrior who came to know the horrors of war and so came to realize its utter futility and underlying causes of greed and self-aggrandizement. He, like Smedly Butler in the century that followed, came to see war as a racket for a few at the expense of the majority. Doniphan's integrity in the Mormon wars shines through in a world gone mad with hate. His life is so full of examples for us it is sad that he, once a household name, has become virtually unknown to us now. He truly was a great American hero and we would do well to honor his life and work. The book is wonderfully well written and complemented with black and white photos and drawings from the Doniphan's life. It is a must have for the serious student of mid-19th century American politics.

Great biography on important but neglected figure.......1998-12-03

Alexander William Doniphan was one of the most significant and popular figures in Missouri from the 1830s through the 1870s. He excelled as an orator above all but was also an extremely successful attorney (he defended 188 clients on murder charges with most being found innocent and none receiving the death penalty), military leader, politician and businessman and an influential educator and farmer. Doniphan's most famous exploit, the conquest of New Mexico and Chihuahua and the creation of a law code to govern the first area, was chronicalled several times in the 19th century but this is the first full biography to be published about this important man. I have studied most of the available primary and secondary sources on Doniphan and find this biography to be both balanced and complete. Anyone who is interested in Mormon, Missouri or Western History should find this book worth reading.

Some good, some a bit lacking, but all fun to play........2001-06-12

This was the first Tori book I bought and I was not at all disappointed. First of all, the songs included are Cornflake Girl, Blood Roses, Silent All These Years, Icicle, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Over The Rainbow, Hey Jupiter, and In The Springtime Of His Voodoo. The transcriptions of Over The Rainbow, Cornflake Girl, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Hey Jupiter, and Icicle are absolutely superb. Although many people disagree with the practice of putting the melody into the accompaniment, as a pianist who cannot sing, I am thankful for it -- all of the songs other than Hey Jupiter double as piano solos for those of us who don't want to desecrate Tori's songs by trying to sing them. ;) On the other hand, In The Springtime Of His Voodoo is just about unbearable with its piano lines stripped down to, at most times, one or two notes and doesn't come close to the LP recording. The other songs are all moderately well-done. I would recommend this book on the whole, however, as the rhythms are great and flow nicely and the songs are definitely fun to play, especially if you can find someone to sing with you. I'm not at all sorry I bought it.

I personally enjoyed the extra added pictures in this book. I am always dissapointed in the transcriptions because there dampen to Tori's ad lib. but, I guess it Lies in the conscience of the editor whom transcribed the music. However, you will not be disappointed with "Over the Rainbow", which is the only song you cannot find in any other Tori Amos Song Books. She played it exactly the way its written on the MTV Unplugged Segment. Other songs included are: Cornflake Girl, Blood Roses, Silent All These Years, Icicle, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Hey Jupiter, and In The Spring Time Of His Voodoo.

Couldn't Put It Down.......2003-03-27

This is one of the best little books I've read in a long time. It reminded me so much of my own school days - another time, another placeto be sure, but so much in common! Sophia Zufa tells charming stories that had me laughing out loud. Her schoolmates and her neighbors become very real as do the times of the Depression Era. I highly recommend this book!

'WHY GOD HAS GRAY HAIR' by Sophia Zufa was a delight to read. It is a paperback of short nostalgic stories. I can recall my parents telling of some of the same sort of events; epidemics, kids playing with marbles, making up their own creative games, teacher's pets, and all types of pranks kids could think of. By the author's storytelling, I could almost envision the setting and the characters. A truly enjoyable read. Don't pass this one up.

Old Fashioned Humor.......2003-02-22

This is one terrific paperback. It is a collection of well written short stories, done with expression of knowledge of living during the days of the Great Depression, and attending a Catholic parochial school. Telling of michief kids get into. The author expresses in words, wonderful reminicense of days gone by, times many of us would like to bring back, although not all, for there were many hardships to endure as well. It is a book to be enjoyed by young and old, a book of humor, of simple pleasures, but also tucked in are stories that are serious. Very uplifting. Excellent job by the author, Sophia Zufa.

Best Down to Earth Book.......2003-01-19

This is has been one of the best enjoyable reads in a long time. Sophia Zufa writes a collection of short stories about living during the depression era of the 30's and attending a Catholic parochial school. A time when everyone knew their neighbor, and what their neighbor was usually up to. The pieces are lighthearted, some hilariously funny, but also a few that may sober one. It was an uncomplicated life then. Some of the characters never lacked for cooking up something to amuse their teachers or peers. It is easy to see why God may have gotten gray hair and not just necessarily from just the Catholic kids. The book is only 176 pages. The author's writing is very refreshing. She will not disappoint!

What a refreshing getaway from the here and how. WHY GOD HAS GRAY HAIR, by Sophia Zufa is a collection of short stories about living during the depression era of the 30's and attending a Catholic parochial school. The pieces are lighthearted, some hilariously funny, but a few will leave a lump in your throat. This author does not waste words. Behind each story is a bit of shrewd wisdom. It was an uncomplicated life then, a time when everyone knew their neighbor. If someone needed help there was always someone there. And when kids got into mischief or taunted their teachers, everybody knew it. I remember my own parents, reminiscing about the old days long ago and also about some of the adventurous episodes they got themselves into. This is a refreshingly good read written by an accomplished author.
