Book Description
* Contains over 5000 terms, organizations, and acronyms
* This practical tool should find a central place on the desk of anyone involved in the environment
This unique dictionary of global environmental governance (GEG), written and compiled by two veterans of the international stage, provides a compilation of over 5000 terms, organizations, and acronyms drawn from hundreds of official sources. An introductory essay frames the major issues in global environmental governance and outlines the pitfalls of talking past one another when discussing the most critical of issues facing the planet. It challenges both those who are concerned with the management of our planet and its inhabitants to understand and accept a vocabulary common to the often-opposing objectives sought in the many GEG instruments.
The result is a practical tool that should find a central place on the desk of anyone involved in environmental management, development, or sustainability issues anywhere in the world including the United Nations, NGOs, the business community, and students and professionals.

Book Description
`At last, three authors who have recognised the need for economic literacy among environmental scientists and scientific literacy for economists. Quentin Grafton and his colleagues offer a wide-ranging, ambitious, but highly successful guide to the ever-expanding terminology that any modern-day environmental researcher and reader needs. One to keep on the reference shelf.'
-David Pearce, CSERGE, University College London, UK
`In a field like environmental studies that cuts across so many diverse disciplines, scholars and students really need a basic reference like this Dictionary. It provides concise definitions of a myriad of terms from economics, environmental science, and the policy arena. And even more, it also provides a set of excellent primers for environmental economics itself and some related issues. It is an invaluable reference.'
-Wallace E. Oates, University of Maryland and Resources for the Future
`This book is a very useful reference for professionals in natural resource and environmental management. . . . I recommend that practitioners get a copy for their own reference and that courses in this area adopt the book as a supplemental text.'
-from the foreword by Robert Mendelsohn, Yale University
This comprehensive new dictionary is an important reference tool for all those interested in environmental science and environmental studies. Written in a clear and accessible style, the dictionary includes over three thousand up-to-date entries, all accompanied by a detailed yet straightforward definition covering all aspects of the subject.
The book also includes three primers, which will bridge the gap between each discipline covered. These consist of introductions to environmental economics, international environmental problems and environmental systems, dynamics and modeling. Another unique feature is the inclusion of an appendix which lists and describes the world's major international environmental agreements.
This Dictionary with its primers and appendices will prove immensely useful to all students and scholars of environmental science and studies.

Customer Reviews:
Wait for the next one.......2007-07-29
This book is wonderful if you like 70's type vegetarian food. I worked in the kitchen at Kripalu for a fair few years recently and we never used this book.
The menus and complexity of the food has improved and matured over the years. So I would wait until the new book comes out in the next few years.
Good for browsers.......2004-03-24
I like reading cookbooks. I mean, I like reading cookbooks in the same way that I like reading novels. If that's true for you as well, this book is a good choice (only beware, there are no pictures). As far as utility purposes go, this isn't a book for the casual chef. Many of the ingredients are obscure and many of the recipes call for over 10 ingredients. I disagree that it holds up well in the kitchen - I've only actually made a few recipes from it (I agree wholeheartedly about the Tofu-Basil Lasagna - but you can use regular white vinegar instead of umeboshi vinegar) and already some pages threaten to fall out.
I also value a cookbook that can convince me that its recipes have been thoroughly tested. I hate feeling that the money I've spent on the book and on the ingredients (for this book, the ingredients can get costly) as well as my time and effort were all just to satisfy a whim some chef had - instead of concrete evidence that a meal will be tasty. The Kripalu cookbook includes little stories about each recipe that I really appreciate and trust.
If I had unlimited funds and didn't have to work full time, this would be a primary resource in my cookbook collection. As it is, it's definitely a major player in my casual "flipping through" collection.
The recipes I've tried have been worth the price........2002-08-15
I recommend this book to anyone interested in cooking vegetarian. The tofu basil lasagna alone is worth the price of the book, and I've even pulled off making it for a Christmas dinner (the die-hard meat eaters had no idea, and even had seconds!).
The muesli recipe is excellent, and I've made the garlic green beans a staple in my house.
The only drawback is that there is no nutritional information provided, which is a drag for label-readers like myself.
It may be a silly point, but the book holds up pretty well in the kitchen, what with sauce and splotches mucking it up, and if it ever gets REALLY messed up, I would pay the money to replace it.
Hope this helps anyone with a decision.
Not bad but not great........2001-12-01
Out of 12 recipies I made, my family only liked 3 of them. Spinach lasagna, rainforest bars, and whole wheat bread. There are several errors in the book, so pay attention and calculate amounts carefully. The prep and cooking times are low. Two hours usually means a little more than three. Everything looks delicious but it's not all that easy to prepare. Some of the ingredients are a little difficult to find, too.
Easy Tasty Recipes.......2000-01-09
I love this cookbook & have given it to many friends! The recipes are easy & very tasty. Who says that eating healthy needs to taste bland? This book is good for beginners & more advanced cooks. I would highly recommend it to people who want more variety in their already healthy diets.

Book Description
It Pays to Be Paranoid is a book about avoiding mistakes-the kind of mistakes that can result in catastrophic expenses, lawsuits, losses, and bankruptcies. As a veteran private investigator and business consultant, Eiben has witnessed firsthand how frequently such easily avoidable mistakes wreak financial and personal havoc on businesspeople. Why do otherwise smart, capable professionals stumble into foreseeable traps? More importantly, what more can they do to recognize and avoid them?
Through in-depth analysis of compellingly authentic case studies and insight born of his years of experience in the field, Eiben explains how certain prescriptive measures-more careful hiring practices, improved security, effective and thorough due diligence, and others-can limit risks and improve the odds of business success. In the current business climate, with the ever-increasing strategies available to the unscrupulous, the devious, the imaginative, and the outright criminal, this kind of "paranoia" isn't just a necessary tool-it's a virtue.
Christopher Eiben is president of The Research Group, Inc., which provides litigation support and investigative services to diverse companies. He has worked on hundreds of cases concerning financial fraud, workplace accidents, negligent hiring, sexual harassment, corporate acquisitions and executive recruitment. He is a licensed private investigator and a member of several respected investigator trade groups. Previously, he was a labor law specialist supervised by the Ohio Attorney General's office, where his investigations helped establish case law in the areas of corporate labor practices.
Customer Reviews:
Chapters provide plenty of case histories .......2005-03-05
Just when does paranoia pay off? When it can be used to recognize and avoid foreseeable mistakes in business: that's the message of It Pays To Be Paranoid: Securing Business Success By Preparing For The Worst, which helps readers spot problems stemming from misappropriation of funds, cyber-fraud, workplace accidents and more. Chapters provide plenty of case histories and come from a veteran legal investigator and business consultant whose own in-depth case analyses serve as models of understanding.
I'm better safe than sorry.......2005-02-01
This book is an indispensable tool for anybody wanting to enter business AND have a good experience: doing a little prepatory investigating minimizes (if not entirely eliminates) your chance of failure...or worse. I am of course refering to fraud.
In addition to the shinning paragons, you will run across people who seem nice, but something about them just does not seem right upon initial meeting. Dumping rather than attempting to accommodate them will save you time and possibly a lot of heartache and money.
When an acquaintance of mine announced that he was starting up a magazine, I enthusiastically accepted. Because I had only written for the campus media up until that point, reaching national audiences was an intoxicating idea.
This occurred despite another person warning me that this acquaintance had a reputation for being unreliable. Since I have also been judged unfairly by people throughout my life, I decided that I would instead give him the benefit of my doubt.
For the first couple of years, everything was progressing nicely. True, there was no product and the extent of our `company' was email and telephone conversation. But, I decided that since we were undertaking an ambitious project, I needed to cut people some slack and relax.
I became suspicious when the organization's once-constant information stream slowed to a trickle, and then nothing, followed by the publisher leaving. Finally, when my now-former colleague accused me of being unprofessional only for wanting to be able to give people (including family and close friends whom I had previously gushed to about the project) confirmation that I had not made up the company after an unexpected delay, I was side-swiped, but only for a moment.
I thought I would feel remorse and anger from his words, but oddly, I feel relief. If this person was so threatened by my request for public information about our once-joint venture at this point, I shudder to think what would have happened later on (even assuming that things would work according to his timetable and preferences). Attempting reconciliation or sweet-talking was not even worth it.
I am happy that this man never saw a cent of my money, saddened that there are many more like him out in this society. I am also relieved that preparing for the worst is not overreacting, but a sound business strategy which will give me the good life. I have surived a bad business relationship because I listened to my gut feeling.
Excellent and readable!.......2005-01-10
This cautionary tale of real life business disasters reads like a novel. The case studies are especially relevant to today's litigous business climate. As a business owner I read this book in one sitting and immediately passed it to my HR Department. I highly recommend this book to other business owners.
Hard-headed habits for commercial success.......2005-01-02
This is one of those rare business books that has changed both my thinking and my behavior. It is particularly valuable for the lean organization that takes pride in its ability to make quick decisions. Mr. Eiben cogently supports the maxim that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", particularly in the complex, litigious world we operate in today. Buy it, read it, distribute it to your associates and take its lessons to heart.
Save yourself a lot of trouble later; read this book now.......2004-12-12
Having known Chris Eiben well since high school days I can tell you that he is a careful and meticulous researcher. I have consulted with him on how to avoid problems when hiring new staff for my business. The advice he gave then was invaluable, and included things I had not thought about, but on retrospect one had to ask: "how could I have missed somehing to obvious?" This book is full of similar advice and wise council for anyone who wants to go through life in the lifeboat rather than swimming with the sharks!

Book Description
This book, tells a story about Judith Lynn (Ford) SansonÂ's life. She was born in 1958 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For many years, the family lived in town. Until 1968 they moved to a small farm. Farming became a new way of life. The illustrations are drawn from the author.
Moving from town to out in the country was the families dream. The move was 300 miles up to northern Wisconsin. Starting from scratch was an interesting struggle. The family started with a small farm and gradually worked up to a larger farm. Farming had its ups and downs. Strange and unusual things happened.

Learning about farmlife and family life.......2001-07-15
This wonderful book, talks of family life. If they would read the book it is true to the heart. The storys are to encourage and instill memories in all. Family is what makes life more interesting in this cold hard world. Learning about farming is what was in this book. If you read it you will find it is not to tear down but show our lives in a positive light. As for Aunts and Uncles it is not to destroy anyones reputation but to acknowlege their existence on this planet earth we live on. IF names were changed it was to protect them. If they were used it is in honor to them. The author has no intention to hurt those who were shown love in the book. Read the book and feel the love for if anyone of you read this book. If is not about her aunt and uncles but about her and her family. The aunts and uncles are in everyones life. And yes the stories are true. The book is a biography. If anyone reads it they love it.
it wasn't not a true story.......2001-07-09
it wasn't a real true story about her at all it was based on her aunt's and uncle's life.it didn't make since that she put her words into a story that didn't make since for her life. She used her aunt's and uncle's personel lifes in the book with out even asking them at all with out permission.and shouldn't even be sold at all. and makeing money out of her aunt's and uncle's life they should recieve it.and stuff that didn't even happened to her and it wasn't true at all the stuff she said about her aunt's and uncle's should have been personel and the media shouldn't even now the stuff at all.
A Blossom From A Barnyard.......2001-03-31
Wow! Growing up on a farm in 1968. It was an experience to live.I think it's better than little house on the praire. This book puts you there in 1968 on that 40 acre farm. I learned how farming was through Judith's eye's was exciting. This book took me through adventure, and back through time. It is truly positive and inspiring. She shared the joy of owning a pony for the first time. Unexpected things thing's alway's happened. And the illustration's will blow you away. I think every kid should have one!It would be good reading material for school's. It will truly intrigue you. The reading is easy to follow and very enjoyable. I recomend it to everyone whoever wanted to be on a farm. Who has been on a farm.Or to those whoever dreamed of being somewhere other than they are right now. Or to anyone who just want's positive, non-violent,and enjoyable reading material.
