The Business Research Handbook (Methods and Sources for Lawyers and Business Professionals) by Kathy Shimpock is a must buy. This noted author and lecturer has taken a very difficult subject - retrieving business factual information - but immensely valuable one and simplified it for legal professionals. This book covers basic research strategies, research tools, and how to retrieve information from libraries, government agencies, corporations, associations and a host of other organizations. Information can be located in areas such as accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing and insurance, retrieving government publications, corporate information, expert witness location and background research and a private company profile. "How to Work a Room" works for me.......2003-12-22

How do you judge whether a "How-to" book is worthwhile? With business books, I ask one simple question: After reading the book, did I bring away at least one thing that made a positive, measureable difference in my life? If so, it was worth the time and money spent on it. "How to Work a Room" is just such a book. I picked this book up while waiting for someone, opened it to a random page, and read the short section on meeting people at parties by "acting like a host instead of a guest". A week later I went to a meeting of an organization I wanted to join, and found that I arrived at the same time as the woman in charge. Remembering what I had read, I immediately pitched in (before even introducing myself, and ignoring her pro forma protests) to help her get set up. Along the way, we introduced ourselves, and as the other officers drifted in, I was introduced to them (with the president's obvious stamp of approval), and so on until not only was I known to everybody there, but I was in the thick of things as a comfortable part of the inner circle. Now, maybe everybody else in the world already knows this stuff, but this kinda shy 40-something man didn't. I made more friends and business contacts in 3 hours than I had in the entire month before. Bottom line: I haven't even read more than a few pages yet and I've already got my positive, measureable difference! Buy it, read it, use it.

Practical and effective techniques.......2000-11-20

How to Work a Room includes very practical common sense ideas that can help overcome fear and shyness as well as offering encouragement for putting the ideas into practice. Ms RoAne set our to write a book that would enable anyone, particularly someone prone to fright at large crowds, to walk into a room and connect with people. Her techniques can help wallflowers move into the mainstream of a business or social gathering and have a more satisfying time (and have more fun). For example, one of Ms. RoAne's more powerful techniques is to encourage moving from guest behavior to hosting behavior. The idea is simple and non-threatening, yet by providing a purpose to interact with others at a gathering, a user of this technique can turn a situation that is usually intimidating into a good experience. Other techniques and strategies are also useful and all are summarized in the final chapter as the ten commandments of connecting with people.

A reader focussing mostly on the techniques presented by the author and not taking some of the examples too literally will benefit most from this book. I have seen her strategies and techniques work first hand and recommend this book.

Keep looking.. this is not the book you need.........2000-10-01

..if you really want to learn how to work a room. The book is written for women who are shy. Even if that describes you, there are better books to read. Most of the book addresses the issues of how to shake hands, how not to wear see-through blouses, and how to avoid having sex at trade shows. Unless these are burning issues for you, you will find nothing of value in this book. I am a professional consultant and attend conferences and networking events several times per month. I bought the book in an airport, read the first half, skimmed the second half and left it on the plane for the next person. It was a waste of an hour and a half and [my money]. Save yourself the time and expense, unless you are a 22 year female college grad in her first sales job who needs instruction on who to flirt without getting in over your head and need to be told that you shouldn't have sex at trade shows.

How to Work a Room is a reasonably good book, but I think women will get a whole lot more out of it than men will. I, as a man, was not terribly interested in worrying about being hit on by my co-workers ("The Intercepted Pass") or dressing in a business appropriate fashion. There are good points for both men and women, but these can also be found in other materials.

This is a book fabulous. There are a few things that are common sense, but sometimes its good to have such things presented in the way this book does. Its an effective book and can have a powerful effect on a persons social life.

While I consider myself a person with a good understanding of manners, one thing I have lacked is the confidence to start a conversation with just about anyone. This book has given me a lot of tips to do just that and have the know how to follow up afterwards. I read several reviews of her newer book by the same title and found a lot of the reviews to say this book was too basic and that there was a lot of unnecessary info. I'm not a fast reader and I finished this book easily in a week. Even if there is extra info, it's not something you drag yourself through.

I'm going to be recommending it to those I work with.

BEST book I have ever had.......2007-01-06

This was given to me as a gift when I got my first apartment 5 years ago. I still use it more than any other cookbook I've ever had.

This is a great item for someone who's never cooked before or someone who has a little experience too. Rather than just recipes, it starts out with the real basic stuff. What gear do you really need for your kitchen and what's nice to have. What do you use all that stuff for anyway? How do you cook something simple like a chicken breast?

It progresses into lots of simple, fast recipes (like chili or just how to broil a steak), before moving on to slightly more complex things that you'll want to do frequently (like all the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner!).

I purchased this as a gift for a cousin this year moving out of her parents' place. My only comment on this version is that the binding doesn't stay open on its own like when you buy the cooking basics or entertaining basics separately like I have. Minor thing, but it might make a difference to you.

Great Introduction to Volatility.......2006-05-02

To get the most out of this book one needs to understand its original objectives. Many reviews seem to be critical of its elementary nature and concentrate on disputing its usefulness to those involved in advanced quantitative finance. I was initially skeptical of this book but a colleague insisted I look at it.

Connolly's analysis of option volatility and the `Greeks' is brief but precise and always to the point. (Why take five pages when you can do it in one?) The book is written without the use of complex equations so as not to intimidate the reader and appeal to a wider audience of new entrants to the field (both academic and practical). It is not intended to be the definitive options strategy guide guaranteeing instant profits. It does however give the reader a solid grounding in options fundamentals and leaves the reader confident in their ability to tackle texts of a more advanced nature.

Those comparing the lack of detail in this book to more advanced works have completely missed the point of this text. Even today, no other book (including Baird) equals this text in terms of introducing and explaining the mechanics of options.

Update needed but okay for beginners.......2005-09-07

Kevin B. Connoly's "Buying and Selling Volatility" is a useful work for beginning option traders and market makers, especially those coming from other fields. However, one should be strongly cautious on two fronts: 1) the book is now outdated by some years, both in strategies and more sophisticated technological advances (faster and better random number generators, automatic execution, VBA & C++ code, utilities, Excel advances, distributed networks, etc.); and 2) this book only addresses some simple strategies, and senior desks and hedge funds will be light years beyond those described here.

Both of these caveats are as one should expect from a book. Think about it, if Connolly had the holy grail of volatility trading, he would not write a book about it, he would be trading options.

This book, followed by Baird's superior work "Option Market Making" should give beginning junior traders and trainees a good foundation in basics, vocabulary, model techniques, etc. However, one should not look at this book as the only answer or a prime reference or authoritative. The chief advantage of BaSV is that it isolates option trading and techniques as a topic. In most other finance books, or even option pricing books, strategy and market making are left to the reader to figure out for themselves. Connolly joins Baird in writing from the perspective of a trader, not an academic. For this perspective alone it may be useful. However, for those with limited budgets, I suggest buying only Baird, and skipping this work.

Not worth the money.......2002-01-14

Very basic book not worth the $1.... I have been in the derivative market for 5 years. For a beginner, there are much better books out there that cover all the material of this book in one chapter.

I found this book to be a good beginner book in trading . The chapters didn't go into much depth for more advanced traders . I would say that if your imtimidated by math then this book will be a good buy , but if you want depth and a bang for your buck ..you could do better.
