Sweet!.......2004-01-25
For the money you pay, it's worth it. Remember, it's not a .... book. I used the 'slave driver' section on my boss and it worked! I had to modify the instructions to fit my situation, but the basic 'idea' in the book was sound.
This book has a core 'secret idea'. If you're a concept person you will get it. It's a single idea. That's good because the author keeps it uncomplicated. One idea you can apply to many situations.
How many $8.00 pizzas did you waste your money on? Help yourself and your sanity and buy the book.
A good book for the common worker.......2000-12-22
This is a good book for the common worker. The suggestions on how to deal with your slave driving boss in the bad boss section helped me keep my job. A Wisconsin reader.
I liked this book.......1998-11-11
I liked this small book. In less time than it takes me to read a newspaper I got some ideas on how to deal with rotten bosses, and a few laughs in the bargain.
Buyer Beware.......1998-09-06
Do not buy this tiny tome. It may contain 140 pages butseveral are virtually blank and the paltry narrative is triple spaced. The useful information is minimal - write up all slights (keep the original), confront the offender and elevate if necessary. Duh. Few specifics are given: "look in your phone book for those who specialize in such issues - call OSHA, Dept. of Labor, etc. What may have made a marginal pamphlet is now a "book" with poor reproduction and unoriginal clip art to boot.

a cornerstone.......2007-07-12
We live in Plymouth, MA, and often entertain visitors from places outside of New England. I am a fan of ethnic cooking of all varieties, including old Yankee New England.
White's book includes both old standards and new ideas that match well with them. For a time I looked only at the old standards, but those recipes are quite common and, to tell the truth, often dull for today's diners. Now I typically liven up a menu with something newer from this book.
In addition, it provides a lot of really good background info on ingredients, like cooking a lobster, about cheddar, etc. Some of the info is now outdated as the New England slow food movement has greatly improved our options for seasonal and artisanal ingredients, but the basic principles are still valid. The writing is very good.
Yesterday I made a nice summertime seaside luncheon for my parents, who were visiting from Florida. We had a main dish of chilled poached salmon with dill sauce, fresh Duxbury oysters, and shrimp, accompanied by a chilled fresh green pea and mint Vichysoisse and a green salad topped with fresh lobster. On the side were a couple of cheeses (Stilton and Cotswold). We finished with an apple pie.
The chilled soup, the lobster, and the pie came from this book. The salmon recipe was my own, but I am sure it derived from White's, long since internalized. Most of the charm in the meal was the best available ingredients, but it was White's recipes that pulled them together.
I recommend the book for those who enjoy ethnic cuisine and for those who enjoy the tastes of New England.
A Must Purchase!.......1999-12-29
Jasper White has put together a cookbook which you will refer to again and again. Whether you're looking to cook fish, shellfish, meat or game, poultry or pork, he'll have a recipe you'll enjoy. Also...need a dessert...or breads and noodles...or a list to source condiments, herbs, johnncake meal and other grains...this book has it.
Mr. White also gives tips on some of the basics from the different uses of various the peppers and salts used for seasoning, to making fish or veal stock, and making Beach Plum Puree or Persimmon Chutney.
He also gives a story with many recipes making this book interesting to read as well as use.
Filled with amazing recipes and history from New England.......1999-03-31
This cookbook has some of the most delicious recipes I have come across in years. Jasper creates distinctive recipes from New England and accompanies them with stories, both regional and personal. The recipes are easy to follow, within a person's budget and produce amazing results. I recommend this book to everyone who loves New England cooking.

Hedgehogging
ASIN: 0071350306 |
Book Description
Hedge funds--one of today's most popular and lucrative investments for high net-worth individuals--also carry tremendous risk for the unwary. The Hedge Fund Handbook provides new tools and frameworks for understanding these complex funds, with the emphasis on risk measurement and management. Extensive charts and graphs demonstrate the inadequacies of traditional methods of analysis while offering the reader a striking new method for detailed, accurate analysis.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Book Flawed by Numerous Typos.......2006-07-31
This book is certainly not a definitive guide to evaluating hedge funds. It focuses pretty much exclusively on a number of tools for evaluating the risks and returns of hedge funds from a quantitative perspective. It discusses and illustrates some interesting ideas such as the Hurst Index and d ratio to help us evaluate the dynamic nature of hedge fund returns. However, the book is flawed by many figures that either do not display what they are said to in the text or sometimes simply repeat the previous figure with a different number and caption, or perhaps are completely wrong. This makes the book hard to understand in parts.
Lacks Depth of Coverage.......2003-04-26
I read this book in about an hour, it is vey simplistic in the analisis and its conclusion or based on assumptions that can never be applied to hedge funds, specialy his survivorship analysis. I have read about 10 books in hedge funds, I find this the least helpful.
Only focuses on risk of returns and leverage.......2001-06-18
Only focuses on one aspect: risk computations and leverage This book is certainly not a handbook on how to buy a hedge fund. It spends a great deal of time discussing how to disect a fund's returns mathematically. It does a good job of explaining in simple English what is wrong with using standard deviations of returns in trying to determine a fund's risk. Unfortunately, that is not all that one should consider in evaluating a fund. It does not go into detail about looking at other funds a manager may have been involved with, comparing that fund's returns to other funds in its class. It does not talk about understanding how hedge funds determine their fees, how to watch out for fraud, how to evaluate a fund's accountants and lawyers and the relative importance of these factors. It does not spend much time on discussing the risks involved due to the fact that most funds limit when one can put in or take out money or that a fund may force you to take some of your investment back. It also does not discuss tax treatment. Many funds' earnings are reportable as regular income. This may be important. The bottom line is that you can find out about risk and volatility from a stat book. It is the other behind the scenes unformation that is also critical in choosing a hedge fund.
BEWARE!.......2000-07-02
I am highly skeptical of the data behind most of this book. The figures seem consistently wrong. I doubt a single set of data could give the #s shown in both Table 4.2 & Chart 4.5. I find it funny that in Charts 7.1 & 7.2, 2 managers have tremendously different gross returns, but seemingly the exact same set of monthly returns. Funny again, in Charts 8.1 & 8.2, "Best" & "Random" managers seem to have the exact same results. Are the errors in proof-reading, concept, or facts?
Good book with a very narrow focus.......2000-05-18
This book will be useful for the money manager interested in choosing among the growing universe of hedge funds. Despite some overmethodical and occasionally dubious measurement techniques (much is made of the mysterious-sounding "d ratio", which is simply the ratio of winning months to losing months), Lavinio does provide some useful tools for evaluating the past performance and future prospects of different hedge funds.
The only disappointment is that Lavinio tends to treat hedge funds as mysterious black boxes, scrutinizing their results without any real attention to their methods. The lay reader will probably find little to satisfy his/her curiosity.

Customer Reviews:
Look for some other book on ETF's.......2007-07-27
Do not fall for the other review like me. Generally I avoid books which have less than 10 reviews. But decided to try this as there are not many books available on ETF's.
This book is very badly written and poorly edited. It is neither for beginners nor for professionals. I am very disappointed that Wiley could publish such a book and some kind of experts (three of them) endorsing it on the back flap.
I want to give less than one star, but Amazon does not let me do that. If not for following reasons I would have given this book at least two stars.
1)About 100 pages (from page 165 to 268) dedicated to listing various ETF's available in market. These pages cover information like inception date, asset size, expense ratio, past returns for each of the ETF's. All this information is available fro free on many web sites and I do not understand why anyone would waste 100 pages in a book.
2) Short chapters with a story in each. At the end these meaningless stories the primary character decides to invest in ETF.
3)Same information is repeated in the text and side notes. Too many redundant side notes.
Getting Started in Exchange Traded Funds.......2007-03-27
Excellent book on ETFs. The book also provided a good background for researching ETFs.

Just the Facts..........2000-03-25
I just got the book last night, but so far it is great. I know very little about investing, just that I wanted to know more about Mutual Funds before I try to pick one. It has a lot of facts but isn't dauntlingly dense. There are lots of charts, definitions in the margins as well as a full glosary and plenty of room in the margins for notes. I choose this book over the For Dummies book because I didn't want to read an extra 200 pages of stories.

Customer Reviews:
Collaboration with Appropriate Velocity.......2001-03-02
The hybrid title obviously fuses two very important words: "fast" and "alliance." It is Segil's assertion (and I totally agree) that "The e-commerce business world has turned many old rules on their heads....You have to be ahead of the [other] players in this game. FastAlliances can be the tool -- the approach that helps you reinvent a small part of your organizational structure if you are a traditional (not new Internet) company. If you are a new Internet company, the challenge will be to apply some level of discipline while maintaining the velocity you have already created." So the emphasis for all organizations (regardless of size or nature, be it a "traditional" or "new Internet" organization) must be on forging and sustaining appropriate strategic alliances while conducting business at a high rate of speed. How? Segil offers a "unique model" which suggests a seven-step approach:
1. Diagnosis of Your Company, Competitors, and Industry
2. The Up-Front Work in the Creation of FastAlliances
3. Define the Deliverables for FastAlliances
4. Managing Stakeholder Expectations
5. The Essential Characteristics for Business Development
6. Leveraging the Global E-Space
7. Employing the E-Mindshift System
Actually, there is a Step 8: The Deals -- Making, Managing, Adding Value, and Terminating Them. She explains the "nitty-gritty of creating and managing FastAlliances -- metrics, ongoing change mechanisms, and knowledge transfer; tools, tools, tools!" There is a separate chapter devoted to each Step, followed by a final chapter (Chapter 9) in which she discusses "Pitfalls and Opportunities -- Summing Up." This is an especially valuable chapter because Segil addresses a key issue: How to grow a company in e-space by using traditional alliances along with FastAlliances.
In the Afterword, Segil provides her e-mail address, inviting readers to visit her website and thereby gain access to a suite of more than 25 software processes that comprise the Larraine Segil Partner Relationship Management (PRM) System. She also provides her e-mail address with the expressed hope for a continuing relationship with her readers. In other words, Segil continues to seek out FastAlliances of her own which perhaps (just perhaps) may include one with you. I also direct your attention to two appendices: FastAlliance Toolkit and Companies Supplying Weapons and Countermeasures in the War for Web Customers.
I rate this book so highly because its material is substantial and logically organized, because it is very well-written, and because (as Segil herself would no doubt agree) the book enables, indeed encourages each reader to select a combination of concepts, strategies, and tactics which is most appropriate to her or his own organization. Yes, to some extent, this is a "How to" book but it is also a "Why to" book. The seven-step or, for some, eight-step process allows for all manner of modifications to accommodate (a) the unique needs and interests of each organization and (b) changes in that organization's circumstances (eg leadership, resources, or competitive environment). Of course, the value of this book will be determined by the nature and extent of needs to which its ideas are applied, and, the skill with which such application is made. Now more than ever before, organizations need all the friends they can make...and then keep. Segil suggests a practical and comprehensive process to achieve that objective. Now more than ever before, organizations must also be able to maintain the velocity necessary to compete successfully. Segil also addresses that need. It's nice to know where to locate her if and when a FastAlliance with her would be appropriate to you both.
Written In 60 Days, and Reader Suffers Pain.......2001-02-25
One of a few books I bought in an airport bookstore rather than on amazon, my first thought is that the amazon process really does help--this book is flashy enough to get one to buy it on the fly, but probably would not survive in open competition when alternatives are easily visible in an electronic bookstore.
The author notes that the book was written in 60 days. It shows, and the reader is the one that suffers. I have no doubt that the author, an attractive person by the photo, is a wonderful speaker with many insights to offer. The book, however, is not well laid-out and one has the feeling that 100 different briefings have been sorted into chapter files and dumped into the book. What couldn't be fit into the text was turned into sidebar or text figure.
The book includes a CD-ROM I will never use, as well as a URL for a web address I will never visit. I would rather they had put the money into better editing, more white space, and a much better structure for the book.
My bottom line: the book should not be ignored, but I would recommend that the executive interested in these concepts have a strong younger manager of promise read this as one of 3-4 other similar books, and distill all of them into a ten page memo.
A MUST-READ FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO EXCEL IN E-BUSINESS.......2001-01-25
REQUIRED READING FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO EXCEL IN E-BUSINESS E-business is NOT dot.com business --- It is about supply chain management and customer relationship management. Segil shows readers how FastAlliances can help them stay lean while growing. Her keen insights and expert approach can help any organization use FastAlliances to do the real business of e-business. Readers become armed with the management tools they need to transition from the traditional to the new economy. TRULY GROUND-BREAKING! A MUST READ!
Excellent.......2001-01-11
Larraine Segil's previous book Intelligent Business Alliances was read by several of our partners and became our roadmap for integrating international alliances into our worldwide business development strategy. Now four years later she has given us a whole new way to develop e-business relationships. Continuous expansion of networking is our passport to growth in the global executive search business. Therefore, we have revamped our previously completed 2001 business development plan and have incorporated some of the tools and techniques that Ms. Segil outlines in Fast Alliances: Power Your E-Business. Larraine Segil has had a profound influence on our business model and this book is recommended to any business person who plans to survive in the Internet Age.
Very insightful and motivating.......2001-01-03
For fans of previous Segil books, you will really enjoy this one. What's great about this book is that it's written by someone who has actually had to make alliances work herself and she clearly understands where the pitfalls lie and how to avoid them. Getting up to speed on the internet economy is not an easy task, and Larraine puts business development deals into perspective with her clear analysis and useful set of tools for developing and managing alliances. The book is well written and I found it both interesting and well-paced. I actually think there is a little too much information in here. This could have been two books! So don't plan on finishing this on one plane trip (unless you're traveling to Nairobi on Southwest Airlines :-))
I've already started putting her "Spider Network" tool to good use and its helped me to reconstruct the way I was building business relationships and improve my approach to networking both inside and outside of my organization and my alliance partners' organizations. What I like best about this book is that I got actual tools that I started using right away. I really hate books which talk about a lot of theory but don't give me the practical tools I need to get deals done. There's even a CD included with her book that has some of her tools already loaded on it in software form and it links to her site (www.lsegil.com) which I just went to and was very impressed. I recently saw Larraine speak at a conference I attended and she really impressed me. I highly recommend this book.
