This book is truly "well-written and engaging" and "big-picture focus(ed)" as described by Toddi Gutner in her article in Business Week. Her review of the book peaked my interest and I found What Every Successful Woman Knows every bit as insightful as she stated. However, I believe that the suggestions offered, rather than being time consuming, are a challenge that will help me focus and, in the end, free up my schedule.

Ms. Reals Ellig and Mr. Morin have done an admirable job of gathering so many many women's experiences together in one book. Getting many of these women to speak on the record about the challenges they faced and the strategies they employed to make their way up the corporate ladder must have taken some doing. But the women who were interviewed should be happy to know that if a single anecdote or observation helps another woman to bolster her own career, they will have made a significant contribution. There is value in frank talk, and this book has has it in spades.

This book contains a wealth of information for women in business. I plan to use what I learned to refocus at work to improve my job performance, and especially improve the perception of my job performance. The book redefines the double standard that is alive and well about what "women's work" is; women work in staff and support positions, we work on the details no one else likes to work on, and we toil away, waiting for the day our hard work will be recognized. This book made me thankful I am in a "line" position (profit & loss responsibility), made me realize I get mired in details and allow myself to be volunteered for the bottom-of-the-barrel tasks at work, and made me recommit to marketing myself at work. After reading What Every Successful Woman Knows, I can now identify which tasks I am presented with are insignificant, and have the tools to delegate or dump them with grace. The book contains many useful scenarios and examples of women who made tactical errors in their careers, from bringing resentment from an earlier meeting to after-work drinks with coworkers (bad idea), to wearing flashy clothing to a senior staff breakfast (again, bad idea). The only fault I can find with this book is that it was written for women in upper management who want to rise to senior-level positions. Although I am not in that position, I still found a lot of useful, practical information in this book. Read it, and you'll never get stuck planning another office Christmas party again!

This is one of the best books yet on the subject. Its clear informative and makes Single Stock Futures very easy to understand.

The good the bad and the ugly.......2003-02-13

I read Hubbard's book while on the plane. I expected to put it down and get some shut eye but I couldn't. The book has five case studies in it and it was morbid fascination that kept me reading how badly several of these acquisitions went wrong. The tips and tools were excellent, much better than the marketing material that some of the other consulting firms have released in the name of M&A books. Although it is a British book, it translates well into American situations. I bought it because my boss told me that we had just bought a business; anyone in the same situation should do the same.

Since the adoption of an 'open-door' economic policy in 1978, foreign trade with the People's Republic of China has increased dramatically. This research investigates the comparability and convergence of two sets of accounting standards from 1996 to 2002: United States' Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The investigation involves a sample of companies from the People's Republic of China (PRC) that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). PRC companies traded on the NYSE generally prepare IFRS financial statements and provide a limited reconciliation to U.S. GAAP, creating a unique quasi-experimental opportunity to examine differences between two sets of accounting numbers produced by two different sets of accounting standards while holding the company constant. Comparability is measured by using Gray's index of comparability, and a set of measures are introduced to capture several dimensions of convergence over time in reported net income, net assets, return on net assets, and earnings per share. The evidence shows lack of comparability, caused largely by the revaluations of property, plant and equipment permitted under IFRS, but not permitted under U.S. GAAP. There is, however, substantial evidence of convergence over time.

The many faces of Lincoln.......2006-02-28

In this presentation we hear of selected Lincoln letters sent through out the years of 1830 to 1865. When I wrote selected, I meant that not all of his letters are included or are subjects arranged. It is interesting to hear Lincoln's letters to various people be it politicians, family or civilians alike, although at times it seemed a bit confusing to understand why he was writing the letter. During the war years it was easier to understand his response to individuals at times, although the audio book does not prep the listener before each letter to explain to whom and why the letter is being written. I think a short narrative before each letter read aloud would have been beneficial at times and really enhanced this presentation. It was great listening to some of Lincoln's letters although a prior explanation as to why or what he was responding to would have really made this book.

My review of this book is pretty personal. Robert Samaras is my grandfather. Valerie my Aunt. This book to me was very well written. It showed how alive my Aunt was. It showed how she lived her life to the fullest even though she was sick. No matter what she never let that stop her. It also gives you a good knowledge of the background of Cooley's Anemia. It helps you get a better feeling of what she went though. This book also showed how her family loved her and how she loved her family. This book is very hard to read if you know Val. She was a very loving person. If you know someone that has this you should read this book and have them read it too. I know it helped me understand things. It also made me reliaze that no matter how bad things are you can make the best of them. Val was one of the most terrific people I know. I loved her very much. And by reading this book it helps me remember her and keeps my faith up when things are down. She was a very courages person and lived life to her fullest and I really realized what she went though (and what others go though who have this) by reading this book. If you read it I hope you enjoy it and that you learn alot from it. I would love to hear your comments. And so would my family. This is a very easy book to understand and very well written. Enjoy.
