Customer Reviews:
MUST READ!.......2006-01-04
This book is a bluprint for success for either an individual or a company. The author addresses all spheres of human development - mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, and relational. Most other motivational books emphasize one sphere of human development to the exclusion of others - not so in this book. The author clearly explains these concepts in a way that is easily understandable - he "puts the cookies on the bottom shelf," yet without sacrificing the necessary depth to sufficiently treat the topic. It is obvious that the author has distilled his years of study and experience into this handy volume for the busy reader. Another thing that makes this book so valuable is that the author provides checklists that aid the reader to immediately put the information to practical use. I have used these principles in my personal life and law practice with great success. Any person who is serious about understanding the foundation for doing their best in their personal or professional life and motivating others to do so must read this book!
Avoid!.......2004-01-27
What could have been a decent book is ruined by the author's blatant and offensive attempts to convert the reader to Christianity in the last two chapters. The validity of other faiths is rejected and Lannom advises that "as per the Bible", Christ is the only way to God. Far from being an enlightening introduction to his faith, it seems he is no better than many muslims in that he seriously believes the absurd notion that the billions of non-Christians in this world will not be making it to heaven. Give me a break, you must be joking!
Unique approach to personal and professional development.......1999-09-11
The descriptions of the three types of companies at the beginning of the book is excellent. Jack refers to "profit-driven," "customer-driven," and "meaning-driven" organizations. He then proceeds to give detailed and practical instructions on developing a "meaning-driven" company.
His foundation is self-esteem. Rather than seeing it as something to be achieved, he says self-esteem is a given. Another great book with a simular approach is Your Sperm Won--Experiencing Your Value As A Championship Human Being.
extraordinary insights and understandable text.......1999-07-07
Jack is a tremendous speaker and motivator and in just a short time can create an excitement in an individual or organization that is electric. The book is written in the same down to earth communication method that make Jack so exciting to hear in a conference. I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
A good example of what's wrong with many low carb cookbooks.......2005-06-04
This cookbook is a good example of what's wrong with many low carb cookbooks. First, the recipes in this cookbook are uninspired. Many are for dishes that have been around forever (Sherried Beef Broth, anyone?) and this cookbook provides no new take on them, nor does using a slow cooker to prepare them add anything. For example, Texas Party Pecans is simply spiced roasted pecans. Cooking them in the slow cooker requires a minimum of 2 hours and 15 minutes, while roasting them in the oven or sauteeing them in a saucepan would take considerably less time. The slow-cooker advantage is supposed to be that they won't scorch, but to get that dubious advantage (I mean really, who can't roast nuts?) you'll also have to double or triple the recipe. Not worth it.
The second problem I have with this cookbook is that the recipes call for a number of ingredients that simply are not appropriate in a low carb lifestyle. To low-carb successfully, you have to consider not just the carb count, but where those carbs are coming from. Using a roux made from white flour to thicken a stew? Corn? Potatoes? Rice? No, there are just too many ingredients called for that aren't appropriate.
Additionally, there seems to be a reliance on canned products instead of fresh ingredients. There are also no photographs in this book, except for the few small ones on the cover.
If you're interested in low carb slow-cooker cooking, I strongly recommend Dana Carpender's 200 Low Carb Slow-Cooker Recipes instead.
Over 150 low-carb recipes are tailored for the slow cooker .......2005-04-10
Over 150 low-carb recipes are tailored especially for the slow cooker in a guide perfect for diabetics and any watching their diets. Here are appetizers, vegetarian and main course dishes, and unusual side dishes. The focus is on easily-prepared dishes which can be adjusted to fit virtually any schedule - and which are filled with flavor while still being low-carb. Examples of winners: a lime juice-infused Havana Chicken, Savory Italian Chicken Stew, and Chicken Veracruz. With its international spices, Low-Carb Slow And Easy stands out from other crockpot cookbooks.
Not really low-carb or easy.......2005-03-16
These recipes are not what I would consider low-carb. Maybe "lower-carb" but not low, and with their long lists of ingredients I wouldn't consider them easy either. I am returning the book.

The tax (dis)advantage of a firm issuing options on its own stock [An article from: Journal of Public Economics]
R.L. McDonald
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Digital
ASIN: B000RQYSUK |
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Public Economics, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
It is common for firms to issue or purchase options on the firm's own stock. Examples include convertible bonds, warrants, call options as employee compensation, and the sale of put options as part of share repurchase programs. This paper shows that option positions with implicit borrowing-such as put sales and call purchases-are tax-disadvantaged relative to the equivalent synthetic option with explicit borrowing. Conversely, option positions with implicit lending-such as warrants-are tax-advantaged. I also show that firms are better off from a tax perspective issuing bifurcated convertible bonds-bonds plus warrants-rather than an otherwise equivalent standard convertible.

Practical Analysis and Design for Client/Server and GUI Systems (Yourdon Press Computing Series)
ASIN: 1578516803 |
Book Description
Managers today are understandably skeptical of the promises of new technologies. During the 1990s, vendors of both enterprise applications and Internet platforms promised enormous benefits. Companies invested large sums, but the benefits either failed to materialize, or came at a high price. Managers sacrificed flexibility and struggled to collaborate with business partners-a crippling disadvantage in today's marketplace.
Now, leading business strategist John Hagel III has a refreshing message for managers burned by over-hyped technologies, yet pressured to find innovative ways to deliver more value with fewer resources. He focuses on a new generation of technology-known as Web services. This technology connects existing IT platforms in more automated and flexible ways, leading to much lower operating costs.
The premise is practical and devoid of "change the world" promises. That very pragmatism, says Hagel, will drive enterprises to adopt it. In this book, he provides a clear view of the business implications of Web services: its distinct capabilities, its power to deliver near-term profits, and its potential to drive long-term growth.
Drawing from the experiences of pioneering adopters, Hagel shows how Web services will enable companies of all sizes to:
- Realize bottom-line savings quickly with modest investment
- Leverage investments in existing applications and create more flexibility
- Target specific areas for near-term cost reduction
- Establish-or leave-business relationships fluidly and inexpensively
- Create leveraged growth platforms for long-term competitiveness
A landmark book for CEOs, strategists, and IT managers, Out of the Box addresses near-term cost concerns and requirements for future success. As it discusses Web services, it provides deep insights into business strategy. At its core, this book tackles the most fundamental business issue facing managers today: how to continue to create value as competition intensifies. It also outlines innovative approaches to business process management and organization.
John Hagel III is a business consultant based in Silicon Valley, and is coauthor of two best-selling books, Net Gain and Net Worth. He has served as a senior executive with various technology companies and spent sixteen years as a Partner at McKinsey & Company, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
How distributed data can bring new horizons.......2005-06-17
This book is supposed to describe the benefits of using Web Services and XML to join data of various resources from different organizational units or cooperating enterprises into a single entity, but if you omit this particular "Web Services" technology, you will get a high-level outlook of problems and solutions of information technology in the modern world. You will see how the inability to processing data in correct way can slow down the development of a particular service or product. And you will see how distributed data can bring new horizons. Take fixed or cellular operator as an example. Lots of improvements have been postponed just because there was no correct billing software ready. There are many real world examples in the book to support the author's idea. All these examples are very noteworthy. I can recommend "Business @ the Speed of Thought" by Bill Gates in addition to this book.
A different way of thinking about web services.......2003-09-17
If you're like me and spend a lot of time with techies and read lots of tech journals, you're well familar with the "nuts and bolts" of how web services work. "Out Of The Box", however, takes a decidedly different approach, exploring not only what web services are, but also how they came to be, and where they're going.
John Hagel's observations are generally high-level and strategic, exploring the ways that web services can change how businesses operate and interact with one another. Hegel's thesis is that web services have the power to transform the fundamental ways in which business is conducted, removing many of the barriers and problems in information management, and allowing business relationships to form and dissolve more rapidly than ever before. As a result, wholly new business models can emerge that allow businesses to respond to changes in customer preferences, compensate for new economic or political realities, and make continuous improvements in quality and value.
A highly readable work, just about the book's only weakness is that it is indeed based largely on conjecture, and the premise that today's web service protocols will form the foundation of long-term IT development. Anyone even remotely familiar with IT knows that change can be sudden and dramatic. However, Hagel presents a lot of sound and creative thinking that is especially helpful for an emerging technology such as web services.
"Out Of The Box" should be essential reading for any manager or executive whose job involves implementation of web services at any level. By contrast, techies will find this book sorely lacking in specifics. But that's okay, as there are a host of other books by O'Reilly and other technical publishers that do an excellent job of "drilling down" into the details of the technology.
Great intro to web services for non-techie.......2003-06-06
This book did the best job of anything I've read in describing what web services is, the history behind it and what it means for businesses.
Good start but just the beginning.......2003-05-24
As Hagel has done in his other books, he successfully synthesizes a signficant emerging trend into some provocative concepts and models. The three phases of restructuring, reduced cost of interaction, notions of loosely coupled process networks, unbundling/rebundling, etc. are all provocative and applicable concepts. There is much that I liked alot in this book and many new and interesting examples bring his ideas to life. I have already handed out over 50 copies of this books to friends and associates.
As with Hagel's other books, however, some of the concepts are taken too far almost to the point of being contrived...or to an unpractical level of abstraction. I think he actually could have left the almost "technical" explaination of the Web services grid out entirely. Components of the Web-services architecture don't tie to the rest of the book. A non-technical exec could skip/skim that chapter entirely and not miss much and still gain lot's from the book. Bottom line: Web-services (2nd Generation Web apps) facilitates easy connections between systems and building and extended real-time enterprise(big deal) but is still very much a work in progress...with lot's of value to be achieved today while remainder of grid is maturing.
I think there will be many more books written on this topic. The next logical one would examine and model the economics of process networks and rebundling while providing examples of rebundling and likely incorporate offshore/low-cost sourcing...and illustrate the practical tradeoffs, returnes, risks, against the existing human capital.
Great start!
Exciting Concept Which Could Overpromise.......2003-05-11
Out of the Box provides a visionary approach to the promises of this new web programming and architecture called web services. In the second chapter he warns the ready about the writing becoming technical challenging but does a fair job of bringing the technology to the beginner's level. Perhaps more business books should help executives understand Internet technology so that the complexity could be appreciated in a realistic light. As with many books which try to predict future trends in Internet technology in business, Hagel works from a limited number of examples and tends to overuse some. The main weakness of the book is what many who purchase IT consulting services understand too well - early applications of new technology can easily be overpromised and deliver disappointing or more costly results. However, the book's strength is its forward-looking application of a technology that does indeed have great potential.

.....The memoirs of how one orphan boy called a Beerinsky (the bedwetters) survived in the cruel child abuser orphanage run by overworked, sometimes sadistic disciplinary nuns. He survived without love, compassion, encouragement or individual attention. This was the practice during the world-wide TB/Flu epidemic. Other than shelter, food and clothing, the aim of the nuns was extreme discipline, thus effectively destroying all self esteem of the 200 boys in the institution.

Berrinsky.......2000-12-31
How fortunate we are when blessed with parents to love & raise us! Reading this book made me realize how hard life was in the early 1900's. Illness causing parents to give their children up to orphanages in the hopes that there would be someone to save them.I could feel this little boys pain as he longed to have a family of his own, but was treated as an outcast. What a difficult road one must travel without the love and guidance from ones parents. The stories shared by Mr. Besker ranged from humorous to very sad. I found it hard to put the book down because I wanted to know what life would hand this young man next. Through hard work and a very obvious determination he found success. This book reminded me of the importance of treating others with kindness and respect because we never truly know where one has come from, how they got there or the struggles endured!
