Ordering a Book.......2007-01-06

Just wanted you to know that I have had trouble ordering "The New England Cookbook". Amazon took my order but kept delaying their shipment of it, saying that they were out of stock (and kept pushing the date forward). I waited patiently for 2 months, then decided that they did not have the item they claimed was in stock.

This was not the first time I have had problems with Amazon. If they have the product they ship immediately, but if they don't.....

Addicted to recipes.......2006-07-19

Let me start off by saying that I returned the book and never tried a recipe. I was stunned by how mundane and unsophisticated the recipes are. The cookbook reminded me of one of those fundraising cookbooks put together by schools and churches where everyone contributes one recipe. The reviews were so good I was expecting something exciting and innovative but instead it was filled with dishes that are as common as dirt. If you own Fanny Farmer you already have everything in this cookbook. I grew up on Buzzard's Bay in Massachusetts and I was looking forward to some real New England favorites. The clam chowder recipe was not as good as one I already posses and the author advocates corn meal on her fried clams. No thanks.

If you are looking for easy recipes that may or may not be authentically New England this may be a good cookbook for you. If you are a gourmet cook looking for sophisticated regional fare I say keep looking.

Bring New England home.......2004-06-21

I bought this book after my trip to New England, and I was not disappointed. I love to cook, and I prefer cookbooks written by professionals who know the difference between restaurant cooking and home cooking, know history of cuisine they present, and share personal stories. All of the above I found in the Brooke Dojny's book. I have tried 15 recipes over the past 6 weeks, and all of the results came out terrific and tasting very much like what I ate in Connecticut, Maine, and Massachusetts. I also find the recipes that I have tried to be very easy to follow. Following the recipe for Italian veal piccata, I produced the dish that tastes better than in most Italian restaurants in California and other parts of the States. The recipe for meat loaf is simply the best available! I also appreciate all the forewords and notes for recipes.

Many recipes are quite versatile. For example, the sauce for crab cakes is excellent for many fish or poultry dishes. Even if you serve it with boiled chicken or beef that you used for making broth, the dish becomes excellent instead of being something rather bland and eaten out of frugality and necessity :). This sauce can last in a refrigerator, too.

This book appears to be very helpful when planning a dinner, whether it is a special occasion dinner or just a middle of a week meal. All recipes have specifications as up to which step a cook can prepare a dish in advance. I recently made a sea food feast for my husband's birthday in a middle of a week, and I used this book's recipes only. The feast was spectacular and original, and I was able to do all the shopping and preparations ahead on a previous evening. On the actual celebration day I just spent an hour after work for making four dishes. All in all, they constituted a lovely original coherent special dinner.

After this book, I will gladly buy all books authored by Brooke Dojny.

Truly a taste of New England.......2003-12-10

This book is by far the most stained and used in my collection. Its spine is broken, its pages spotted with grease and cheese, its margins filled with notes.

Every special meal in our home has something from this book - on Thanksgiving, our table was graced by "Whipped Winter Squash with Cranberries," "Crumbly Cider Cornbread Stuffing," and "Shaker Cornmeal Pumpkin Bread." Included in this collection are glorious recipes for a traditional tuna casserole, (tuna casserole glorious, you balk? try for yourself and see!), banana nut bread, clams casino, pizzas and sandwiches, veggies and pasta, fin-fish and shellfish.

There is truly something for every occasion, from the fancy holiday table to the casual backyard lunch. If you are from New England, you'll feel right at home among these pages, whether you hail from the coast of Maine or inland Massachusetts. If you are from another region, you'll be inspired by the folklore and mystery of America's most frugally creative cooks. Fire up your stove and enjoy!

What's cooking? How about Midsummer's Eve Fresh Pea Soup, Herbed Seafood Lasagna, Nor'easter Baked Fish Chowder. And, of course, Cape Cod Turkey . . . which has nothing to do with turkey but salted codfish. We have lots of cookbooks in our collection, but this is one that is going get lots of use. Real soon. Some of the recipe names are a bit tough to swallow (Marlene's Beauteous Butternut Bisque, Red Flannel Hash) but hey, if they can dish it out, we can eat it up. Save room for seconds. And thirds.

Some 'key ingredients' for effective trading.......2007-05-09

Obviously some of the reviewers below "missed" what Robert Koppel is communicating in this book. That is understandable, as most traders never become successful anywhere near what is possible. Don't be deterred, this book has a huge amount of real insights about the nature of trading, and the necessary skills needed, the Tao simply is a way of explaining what it takes.

The Tao of Trading.......2002-07-12

This is an excellent book. It almost reads like a poetry book for traders. It is not merely about the Tao...it unfolds and reveals ideas and insights like the Tao itself. This may sound somewhat strange but if you are interested in creativity and trading and its relationship to some of the great insights of the East the subject matter here will be found useful and worthwhile. Also, check out Mc Call and Steinhardt.

Forget about this.......2002-05-27

If you really believe that the Eastern philosophy of Tao/Taoism can enhance your success in trading, buy and read "The way of the warrior trader, the financial risk taker's guide to samurai courage, confidence and discipline" by Dr. Richard D.McCall. Dont waste your time and money on somebody who knows so little about Tao and just does copy and paste Chinese adages and his own old writings here and there.

p.s. I had read Koppel's other books before and had rated them as two or three star stuff. I am so sorry that I had not disciplined myself enough to stop making another unnecessary loss for being attracted by the appealing title of the book. The good thing is: I borrowed this one from the library.

Didn't I already read this book?.......2001-03-08

Koppel may as well update a single book with new volumes rather than writing a new book with a new "twist" on it. A book on "Tao", and "intuition" relating to trading.

What's next, "physical strength" related to trading? I don't know how serious Koppel is regarding to Tao. It seems like he found a philisophical and complex subject, like ancient religion, and found whatever way he could to relate it to trading. His link was a waste of time and served no purpose. Drop the Tao, stick with the important topics, stay serious. I got no similarity between Tao as he describes it and anything applicable in my trading.

I can imagine his next book: "Gardening and Trading" where one would compare the features of "gardening" to "trading" and the demands and features that are similar to both of them. "You must trim dead leaves in your garden. You also trim losing positions in your portfolio. Only open new trades when they show promise and watch it bloom into a wonderful gain, as you would buy a seed to watch it bloom into a wonderful plant."

They don't have anything to do with each other, yet, the author goes out of his way to find a parallel between Tao and trading. The author tells how Jazz is also like trading.

Please, stop writing books with the same "lists" of winning trader's personality, what you do when you are upset, right-brain, left brain features, and just update one title if you have anything new to say.

Good, but repetitive ..........1999-06-21

Having read the books 'The Inner Game of Trading' and 'The Tao of Trading', it is obvious that there are significant overlappings. This does not change my opinion that Robert Koppel has identified the critical success factors of trading. Because market behaviour is unpredictable in many cases, his various recommendations make a lot of sense and may help to become an overall winner in a volatile environment. His book gives valuable insights into the psychology of trading, but is no substitute for fundamental market expertise.

The wealthy have the money and Dr. Prince understands the mind-set of the wealthy better than anyone in the industry. He also knows what it takes to win the distribution wars and how life insurance companies can excel. Put this all together and you have the best book on the topic. Vintage Teddy.......2005-01-31

From someone who has lived this life on the great plains from cowboy to hunter, this book is in every detail right on. It is written in Teddy's classic modest style (who else could float the Missouri during spring break up chasing criminals with guns and describe it with as much excitement as buttering toast).

It also is a repeat of some of his earlier works as this seems to be a bit of transitional book of when he was about leaving the Elkhorn for the east.
The Wilderness Hunter is more poetic and Hunting Trips of a Ranchman is a better read, but the history in this book of how Montana and the Dakotas were made safe by lynch justice makes this one interesting too.

The sketches by Remington are wonderfully historic to study and add a great deal to this book.
This book though is like all of Teddy's in settling down with a friend and always looking for his next book to find a campfire with him again.
Thank God Mr. Roosevelt wrote so many wonderful books.

"Ranch Life And The Hunting Trail" is Theodore Roosevelt's narrative of his life and experiences during his time in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s. Published in 1888, it displays Roosevelt's writing at this finest. His picture words make the scenes come alive in all their splendor. This is a TR I never knew existed. For anyone with a love of western adventure, this book is it!

Besides providing the sheer enjoyment of reading, this book actually teaches the reader much about the life and economy of the era. I had always heard about the open range and the roundup, but this book makes the concepts clear. Cattle and horses were left to feed on the open range. The herds were divided during the roundup, with the calves given the brands of their mothers, as the way to assert property rights in the cattle. The devastation of a severe winter cannot be imagined until you read an eyewitness account, and few are written as well as this. The challenges of the hunt and the unique characters of the West can be experienced vicariously through the pages of this book.

Frederic Remington's illustrations add visual images to the written word.

This book is an excellent choice for anyone with longing for the lure of the Old West or a window into the world of Theodore Roosevelt.
