5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for all PR students .......2007-07-25

All PR practitioners would benefit from the solid, comprehensive grounding in communications issues presented in this book. The emphasis on cultural and ethical influences presented throughout is vital to all public relations work and the discussion is well presented here. The chapters on writing present useful overviews on the process and common PR materials. However, some descriptions of materials are very brief and all assume the student has an adequate knowledge of basic writing skills and techniques. Readers who really want to focus on writing will want to supplement this book with others that have more in-depth coverage of writing issues and content ideas.

5 out of 5 stars lots of good information.......2004-05-15

The book is barely 500 pages long, but it has everything that anyone would possibly need to know about public relations. There are tons of public relations tools, such as the news release, press release, flyer, public service announcement, pamphlet, brochure, newsletter, fact sheet and media list, and they are all introduced very clearly. This text was required for a course I took in college over a year ago, and I chose not to sell it back to the school because it was so useful. It's great for entry-level workers that are trying to get acclamated to the business of public relations.

Dettmer does it again: makes a concept "come alive" in plain english. Most managers have used this method without knowing the formal process from "A to Z." This would make a great textbook for student or professional. Great follow up to Dettmer's "Strategic Navigation" book.

"A college graduate at 19, a Wharton MBA at 22, an assistant professor at 24, and Citibank's youngest vice president at 25. Paul Zane Pilzer---author, entreprenuer, Presidential economic advisor, and visionary---believes the transformation occuring in the way products are distributed will reshape many of our lives in the coming century. He states... "In the past two decades the majority of the greatest personal fortunes have been made by people who found better ways of distributing things rather than better ways of making things." "The key to success no longer lies in owning or making physical assets but in distributing them." "This last decade of the 20th century promises to be one of dramatic change: in technology, in business, in lifestyles. And while change can sometimes cause anxiety, it always creates opportunity for individuals with the vision to create a better future for themselves and their families. In Business Trends 2001, hosts Sarah Purcell and Gary Collins examine the trends that are reshaping the 20th century landscape---corporate downsizing, technological innovations, new channels of distribution---and introduce you to a way you can capitalize on these changes to achieve greater personal freedom and financial flexibility. If you're looking for an opportunity that could give you more time with your family, provide additional income, and greater control over your future, the information in Business Trends 2001 may well provide the solution you've been seeking." If I told you that you could:

                turn $540 into $3240,

turn $640 into $7300, or turn $1000 into $5950, would you be interested in the details? The Greatest Business of the 21st Century takes the novice investor in commodities by the hand and teaches commodity trading from the ground up. The first five chapters gives a brief history of the beginning of commodities trading and then takes the novice through the language of commodities, the types of trades that can be placed and when each is appropriate. The novice commodity investor is taught how to calculate potential gains and losses. New commodity investors are taught the ropes in the first section of the book. Not only do novices need to understand how the markets work, they also need to know when to trade and what trading strategies to use. The Book teaches commodity trading from a technical view. The novice investor is taught five significant chart patterns which have proven to be highly accurate in predicting both the impending trend and the expected price move associated with the trend. The book uses a pragmatic "how to" approach in developing the novice trader's ability to make a profit in the commodities markets. As such, the author goes beyond other introductory texts in this field by giving the novice exact advice on money levels required for trading in chapter nine. Each of the chart patterns explained in chapters 6-8 are used in example trades in chapter 10. All trades are carried out as single-contract trades. The technique of pyramiding, that is adding contracts in geometric progression with profits previously earned in a position is explained in the chapter "Unlimited Profit Potential". The concluding chapter is a "call to arms" for the novice investor to try out the markets by paper trading as explained in appendix C. In every new venture those who have the best chance to succeed are those armed with complete knowledge of the task. The Greatest Business of the 21st Century was written as an explanatory guide for the novice commodity investor to enter into commodity trading armed with the knowledge to succeed!

                  5 out of 5 stars A solidly practical, user-friendly guide.......2007-07-10

Written by successful investor, real estate expert, and magazine columnist David Schumacher, Ph.D., Buy and Hold: 7 Steps to a Real Estate Fortune is a non-nonsense guide to real-estate investment, step-by-step. Buy and Hold is the antithesis to "flipping" guides; instead of buying property with the goal of reselling it, Buy and Hold is about buying property and using it to generate long-term profit. Chapters cover how to use the Internet to help one purchase real estate, how to analyze the growth potential of property, timing one's investment to gain a boost from the economy, the advantages of using a real estate broker, real estate axioms, and much more. "Avoid the loss of income by performing a periodic rental analysis. Keep up with what is happening in the market and adjust the rents accordingly." A solidly practical, user-friendly guide especially for serious-minded real estate investors in it for the long haul.

1 out of 5 stars where to start..........2007-03-20

The authors advice is extremely outdated for one. Prices, financing and sophistication levels of sellers have reached light speed since the author started investing. He is not a very good author to boot. Disorganized and scattershot would classify his writing style. If you like listening to Grandpa talk about the 'good ol days' then maybe this book is for you.

                  5 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2007-01-06

Schumacher is the Warren Buffet of real estate investing!
Whether you are dreaming of getting started or already owning multiple properties, his homespun, low-key, common sense based approach is right-on. Not only is he a real estate pro in an academic sense, he has put it all into action himself.
His Get-Rich-Slow approach is refreshingly absent of hype....it all seems so easy! It is! You just have to do it - and that's the problem - YOU now have to take action, and have a patient approach, and it will happen.
I've bought this book for a couple of friends who are still on the starting blocks, but in my life buying hundreds of business books, I've never come across such a good resource.

5 out of 5 stars How to evaluate the potencial grows of a property.......2006-03-23

This book tells you should buy properties that really have potencial for earning value in the future. The author is an authority in valuing properties, and he is a self made millionary buying properties for rental. He speaks through his experience and knowledge. This precisely is the value of this book. Excelente book that give you guidelines to evaluate if you should buy a property in terms of its potencial. I recomend for anyone interested in investing in real state.

2 out of 5 stars region specific and not very insightful.......2005-07-15

I like the concept, and his maxims in the opening pages are very good. The author does a bad job at delivery though, often talking about examples in buying beachfront California party. While he made great investments at a great time 50 years ago, I don't have $2M+ to go buy a condo on the beach in California. He sort of uses best case scenario examples that aren't applicable to most investors' markets. This is one of those books the has several good ideas padded with pages and pages of fluff. Would make a great 10-15 page special report, but as far as a book is concerned, nothing great.

                  Book Description

Never have pressures on corporations to trim down in size been so great. But Dr. Milgate's research shows that corporations' efforts to make themselves lean, to focus on core competencies, and to create mutually advantageous alliances with other corporations have not paid off. The lean organization is clearly the paradigm for business at the start of the new millennium, but how is it achieved? Instead of pure theory, Dr. Milgate offers practical advice and illustrates it with real-world case studies, chosen for their ability to demonstrate best practices in lean organizations and to provide answers to questions that, inevitably, arise repeatedly. He agrees that corporations must focus on the basics and leverage their core competencies up through a range of alliances and outsourcings, toward the goal of creating a "best of everything" organization. But too many alliances and outsourcing strategies are initiated for the wrong reasons, improperly thought out, and--as quick solutions to difficult problems--they just don't work. Dr. Milgate tells us why and gives us strategic guidance on the critical issues that corporate decision makers must address as they strive to make their organizations as competitive as they must be in order to compete in the new global economy. The result is a succinct, lucid advisory for upper echelon executives and a necessary classroom aid for their academic colleagues.

Undoubtedly one of the best business books ever written about alliances and outsourcing. The author interestingly portray the motivation behind alliances and outsourcing. He mentioned that "Too often, an alliance is seen as a way of "plugging a gap" or "covering a weakness" rather than exploiting a strength." He also explain what key success factors needed to ensure long-term competitiveness of the organization. An enjoyable and excellent book to read. Recommended reading for people involved with Alliances and Outsourcing.

If you were born before the polio vaccines were discovered, then you probably experienced the scary possibility of getting the disease. All the precautions our mothers took to try to keep us from getting it. And you probably saw pictures in LIFE magazines of children in iron lungs, etc. I qualify on all the above.

But, avid reader though I am, Jack Mason's book is the first I have ever come across which goes through, step by step, the physical and mental agony this disease brought on young people. Jack's memory, decades after his initial ordeal, is amazing. He pulls no punches, either about the disease, his various treatments or his mental states.

Yet, this is not a sad book. It's an incredible book because Jack, then and now, kept his sense of humor. He seemingly always looked for the bright side of a very dark time in his life. In that way it reminded me of ANGELA'S ASHES which was a book about a down-trodden Irish family and yet was uplifting and humorous in many aspects.

I thank Jack for reaching deep into his heart to tell a story that needed to be told, not only for himself, but for other polio victims and for people who never got it. Whether you are of a certain age or not, you should read this book.

A good read. A plethora of individuals and situations that shaped the author's character in later years. Jack Mason should be proud of what he has lived through and written vividly about.

I wasn't ready for this book to end.
It wasn't dull at all. In fact, one had to keep on reading just to see what his next 'step' would accomplish!
I think I'd like to hand this book to folks who think they
                                want to give up!!
                                It's an inspiration!!

Double Jeopardy is supposed to be against the law; Jack Mason not only faced it but fought his conviction and got it overturned. Here is an inspiration for anyone who has ever been tempted to ask, "Why Me?" about a personal setback.

Jack's narrative of his ordeal makes this a very compelling
