              3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2001-10-03

Every "road-to-success" book has some sort of gimmick that sets it apart from the many others in the genre. Chris J. Witting Jr.'s offering is a 21-day exercise regime designed to transform your personality, catapult you up the career ladder and pave over financial potholes. Witting asks readers to devote just a few minutes per day to his program, with each day devoted to a different aspect of getting your life on track. Naturally, that's a lot of ground to cover. But the inherent drama of the countdown to the end of the three-week cycle does keep your interest, thereby encouraging you to take the exercises seriously. And once you've taken that leap, the book does present some intriguing ideas on how to overcome inertia, simplify a cluttered life and harness your existing network of contacts. The instructions are easy to follow and the writing takes a pleasing, matter-of-fact tone. We [...] recommend this book to anyone interested in personal improvement, especially those who have been left less than fulfilled after falling for other "successful" gimmicks.

4 out of 5 stars A Brilliant "INDEX" To Success.......2000-05-22

The title is slightly misleading. This book will require more than 21 days to complete. To understand why, read books like Bob Proctors wonderful book Born Rich or Psycho Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. To Change the brain function, to program it for success takes about 6 weeks.

The book is a wonderful synopsis of everything you need to know about success. It is split into 21 chapters, refered to as days. It covers everything you need to know on success.

I have a few suggestions that will enhance your success with this book. I do not think it goes far enough, in many areas. It is a little bit like the crammers note books, which skirt the subjects, so you can cram the night before. If you are a serious student of success, then this book will prove a great introduction text, but will fall short for an in depth analysis.

This book must therefore be read in conjunction with other texts, some I have already alluded to. Other texts that will enhance understanding from this book are; Unstoppable by Cynthia Kersey, Success is not an Accident by Tommy Newberry, Think & Grow Rich Napoleon Hill, Change Your Life With Accelerated Visualisation Harold Kampf, The Powermind System by M. M. Kiefer, Think Like A Leader Harry Adler. There are others that will help, but these are all great books that can be directly linked into the chapters of this book. The author actually offers a comprehensive bibliography with this book. The bibliography is great as it links the recomended books to the individual chapters. This is why the concept of 21 days is misleading. Even the author suggests other texts that must be read.

So to sumarise, it is a great book for the beginners to success. It outlines all the basics. For the more serious student, use it as an index to success. Each chapter points to a principle of success. Take it, read other books on that concept and I guarantee your success. It is, a great index to success.

5 out of 5 stars A great workbook for anyone who wants to use what he learned.......2000-01-01

I've read many self-help books and learned a lot of principles from them. However, I don't even have any personal jounrnal after completing those books. Chris is doing really a good job in designing the 21 Days Countdown and let readers to have their potential ability to put into the real world day by day. I wrote my mission statement in life during the countdown, which I have never done before!

If you are lack of self review and lack of communication to your heart, get a pen and 21 Days Countdown, follow the exercises and you will find it incredibly work for you.

4 out of 5 stars A good book. Easy to read and effective........1999-07-30

21 day countdown to success was recommended to me by a former World Champion Bullrider as a subsititute for Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr Maxwell Maltz. As a psychology major I felt the book didn't go where I wanted it to, that was probably because I am used to reading long and hard to understand books. 21 day Countdown is very easy to read. It is setup in a great way. It takes 21 days to read the book (a chapter a day) and roughly ten minutes to read a chapter. The book is excellent for people who find it hard to follow a book after they open it. Ten minutes a day for 21 days is fairly simple. Not only that, the techniques are effective. This book will put you on the road to success.

5 out of 5 stars Concise. Individualized. A breath of fresh success air........1999-05-16

Just 21 Days! A countdown journey that is well worth the ride. The reader can choose strategies that work best for himself. No one-approach for everyone solution. I've read a lot of success books but the exercises stretched me and I learned a great deal about myself. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends. Thank you Chris!

              5 out of 5 stars A Lasting Classic.......2000-10-09

The authors provide a remarkable history of beer in America, from colonial times to as current as the printing of the book. Much of the book involves regional (i.e., Northeast, Midwest, Northwest) stories commonly of 10-12 pages, followed by at least 20-30 recipes from the region that pair especially well with beer.

The quality and diversity of recipes provided is incredible, and any recipe I've made has received rave reviews. Following are some of the items that really stood out -- Beer Rocks (a family favorite), Wisconsin Cheese and Beer Soup, Onion Bread, Beer and Horseradish Mustard, Fresh Beer Sausage, New Orleans Hot Pot, Basic Brine for Seafood, Smoked Fish, Caponata, Porter Pot Roast, Barbecued Shrimp, Liptauer Cheese, Pennsylvania Dutch Stuffed Onions, Bainbridge Island Smoked Fish Chowder, Smoked Trout Pate, Soft Pretzels (recipe has a misprint -- use 1 1/2 cups milk, not 1/2), and Onion Rings (the best I've ever made at home). I could go on ...

Real Beer and Good Eats was the first cookbook I purchased and I've had it now for over 7 years. Since then, I've accumulated 50+ cookbooks and 100+ cooking magazines. I can honestly say that this book is one of the few that I find myself returning to again and again for solid recipes and cooking ideas. It has proven to be a lasting classic, and I wish it were back in print so I could give it to more people as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about cooking with beer.......1998-08-25

I've had this book on my shelf for several years and find myself turning to it not just for recipes, but for general information about the many styles of beer outlines in its pages. The recipes are easy to follow and the ones I've tried have been delicous. I particularly like the Beer and Horseradish Mustard, try it with brats or their recipe for soft pretzels. I wish I had more time to cook so I could explore more recipes.

                Book Description

Praise for THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS

"Jack Schwager simply writes the best books about trading I've ever read. These interviews always give me a lot to think about. If you like learning about traders and trading, you'll find that reading this book is time well spent." -Richard Dennis, President, The Dennis Trading Group, Inc.

"Jack Schwager's deep knowledge of the markets and his extensive network of personal contacts throughout the industry have set him apart as the definitive market chronicler of our age." -Ed Seykota

"Very interesting indeed!" -John Train, author of The Money Masters

"Successful trading demands longtime experience because it requires firsthand knowledge. If there is a shortcut to this requirement, however, it is in reading about the experiences of others. Jack Schwager's book provides that shortcut. If you find yourself sweating upon occasion as you read, then you're as close to the trading experience as you can get without actually doing it yourself." -Robert R. Prechter, Jr., editor, The Elliott Wave Theorist

                THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS

Some traders distinguish themselves from the herd. These supertraders make millions of dollars-sometimes in hours-and consistently outperform their peers.

As he did in his acclaimed national bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews a host of these supertraders, spectacular winners whose success occurs across a spectrum of financial markets. These traders use different methods, but they all share an edge. How do they do it? What separates them from the others? What can they teach the average trader or investor?

In The New Market Wizards, these wildly successful traders relate the financial strategies that have rocketed them to success, as well as the embarrassing losses that have proven them all too human.

Meet the Wizards of Wall Street:
                * Stan Druckenmiller, who, as manager of the Soros Quantum Fund, realized an average annual return of more than 38 percent on assets ranging between $2.0 and $3.5 billion
                * William Eckhardt, a mathematician who, in collaboration with trader Richard Dennis, selected and trained the now-legendary circle known as the Turtles
                * Bill Lipschutz, a former architect who, for eight years, was Salomon Brothers' largest and most successful currency trader
                * Blair Hull, a one-time blackjack player who began an options trading company with

Asking the questions that readers with an interest in the financial markets would love to pose to the financial superstars, and filled with candid appraisals, The New Market Wizards takes its place as a classic.

                4 out of 5 stars No secrets.......2007-10-01

Jack does a nice job as usual. Have a plan, stick to it, and don't let your emotions control your trading.
Everyone loses in the beginning, so you need cash to keep going.

                5 out of 5 stars Great read..........2007-09-22

I am far from a great trader and definitely in the category of novice. My brother recommended I read this book and its predecessor. The knowledge I picked up from both books coupled with a lot of reading and research spawned by what I found in the book have allowed me to generate decent returns on investments that have been stagnant for about a year. Within a three week time period I was able to go from being in the hole 6% in unrealized gains to being up over 10% in unrealized gains. I have since realized those gains and re-invested them looking to turn some more profit.

So I would say this is definitely a worthwile read for those interested in finding out how the big investors/traders became who they are and trying to come up with your own methodology for not falling into some of the pitfalls the market holds for the novice investor.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading, Excellent.......2007-03-07

This book is excellent, mandatory reading for all aspiring traders and interested fans of the financial markets. A joy to read, covering everything from the nuts and bolts to the philosophy/psychology of the supertrader.

This is one of the worst books on investing I've ever read. I read his first one from the library and loved it. This one stinks to high heaven. Grammatical errors, misspelled words are really tough to get past. I can see one or two, but...!!!!!

On top of that, the content is empty and very disappointing. If you're looking for a book similar to the first, forget it. This one does not measure up at all. If I could get my money back, I would in a second.

Would recommend anyone intersted in this book to first read "Bogle on Mutual Funds" first as it's an excellent book and covers similar material. If you are still interested in learning more about Vanguard, then this book is an excellent compliment. It's not as critical of it's subject as I would have liked, and really doesn't cover the personal life of the subject so as a biograhy leaves a lot to be desired. It does, however chronicle the amazing story of Vanguard.

Bang, bang: welcome to the culture of speed. Blur the Canadian origins. Ramp up international sales, especially to the U.S. Establish useful corporate alliances. Out go sluggish and dated product lines. Bye bye, redundant employees. Whoosh, grab companies with useful technologies like Bay Networks. Oops, down goes the stock price. Pull back, holding your breath. That's the story of Canada's Nortel Networks in a nutshell. More comprehensive detail about how Nortel established the groundwork for Internet-based corporate networks on wireless communications and fiber-optics connections is offered in Larry MacDonald's Nortel Networks: How Innovation and Vision Created a Network Giant.

Nortel started out in the late 19th century as the telephone-manufacturing arm of Bell Canada, originally building telephones based on the designs of a leading U.S. telecom manufacturer, Western Electric Co. For a time it also produced a host of consumer electrical products like fire alarms and radios, and served as a major supplier for the Canadian military during WW II. But by the late 1960s, Nortel began exploring digital telephone switches, long before other telecommunications companies, including U.S. behemoth AT&T, which became its eventual customer. In 2000, Nortel was spun off as an independent corporation by its parent company.

MacDonald, a technology writer for various newspapers, including the Ottawa Citizen and the Financial Post, and a former Canadian federal government economist, ably documents Nortel's history with a mixture of reportage and analysis. He calls the government's sanctioning of Nortel's monopolistic position as the preferred supplier for Bell Canada "a covert industrial policy"--one that allowed the company to grow into the international player that it is. What's in store for the future? MacDonald speculates that Nortel and its California-based competitor Cisco Systems will join forces. But then who would want to risk a bet on any predictions in the topsy-turvy world of technology? --Paul Weinberg

Praise for Nortel Networks How Innovations and Vision Created a Network Giant "Nortel rising from Canadian industrial age corporation to a global network powerhouse is a fabulous story of determination and foresight, and new business modal innovation. MacDonald shows why Nortel will remain pre-eminent in the brutally competitive digital economy." -Don Tapscott, Chair, Digital 4Sight, and Author of Paradigm Shift, The Digital Economy, Growing Up Digital, and Digital Capital: Harnessing the Power of Business Webs "Few companies are changing the world today. Nortel is one of them-and has been for generations. This is a human adventure of corporate renewal-about visionary leaders who transform today's success into tomorrow's innovation." - E. F. Peter Newson, Associate Professor, Richard Ivey School of Business, The University of Western Ontario "MacDonald's book fills a critical gap in the history of Canadian telecommunications. His Nortel Networks is a valuable and extremely readable chronicle of the remarkable transformation of a sleepy telephone manufacturer into Canada's most valuable corporation." -Lawrence Surtees, research analyst, IDC Canada Ltd., and former telecommunications reporter.

3 out of 5 stars The History of Telecommunications - ( Nortel Version).......2001-08-04

Hello! - The magic word that was adopted as a standard to start a telephonic conversation in 1880. To me it was a surprise that we needed a standard to start a conversation. But then the technologies behind the millions of conversations and communications across the globe have constantly defied standards to create discontinuities at a rapid pace. Today, voice is a small component of the global traffic. Digitization has made it possible to carry Data, Voice and Video at unimaginable speeds - You can shift a large public library from coast to coast within 14 seconds. But this seems to be just the beginning. Amazed? Read on.

The book traces the history of telecommunications from the discovery of the telephone till today's high speed digital transmission through optic fibers. Nortel is at the center stage throughout the book while Cisco and Lucent are seen as its major competitors. The Telecom Industry is thus not a part of the "new economy" and players like Cisco are new players in the old economy Industry. This is what I infer from this book. The secret behind Nortel's success and survival for over hundred years , weathering economic and technological discontinuities seems to be its ability to continuously innovate through investments in R&D and by promoting an entrepreneurial work culture.

Nortel has been "at the right places at the right time"- Enchasing on discontinuities . Cisco is the champion in routing data traffic while Nortel is attempting to use its expertise in telephony and beat Cisco by using a combination of packet and circuit switching.

Also see my review on " Making the Cisco Connection- David Bunnell". I am not willing to take any bet!

A powerful theme lacks the punch of narration. Reads like a text book on telecom history.

5 out of 5 stars Profile of a Network Giant.......2000-11-26

Throughout 14 crisp and lucid chapters, MacDonald explains "how innovation and vision created a network giant." First, he provides a brief history of the company and then identifies its key executives, from C.F. Wise, Sr. (president 1895-1913, chairman1914-1917) until Frank Carlucci (chairman, 1999-present). What a colorful history it has been thus far.

My primary interest, however, is in the company today and (especially) in its prospects for the future inthe face of what is certain to be ferocious competition. As MacDonald observes in the Introduction, "Nortel is at the forefront of laying down the information superhighways now revolutionizing the lives of everyone everywhere. Indeed, Nortel has a good-shot at becoming the number one provider of Internet infrastructure...This book, in providing a look at the emergence and prospects for Nortel, is, in part, an introduction to one of the biggest stories now unfolding: the fierce rivalry of three titans [ie Nortel, Cisco Systems, and Lucent Technologies] to construct and expand the networks of the future."

According to MacDonald, one of the main factors in the Nortel's success this far [i.e. when the book was published] has been its ability to capitalize on discontinuities,"those sudden breaks in the environment or the way things are done." For example, the transition from analog to digital telephonesystems, from wired to wireless communications, and from copper-based to fiber-optic transmission systems. Also, the deregulation of the telecommunications industry, allowance of interconnection to the telephone network by the FCC (1971), and then the break-up of the AT&T monopoly. MacDonald does a brilliant job of examining and explaining this theme of discontinuities as well as other themes which also relate to "the role of institutional arrangements" and to "the internal dynamics of the corporation."

As he thinks about an uncertain future, MacDonald suggests how Nortel has differentiated itself thus far from its two main rivals: its lead infiber optics, the relatively greater amount of its research anddevelopment, its greater diversification of both product andgeographic distribution, its speed advantage over Lucent to embrace growth opportunities of the Internet and IP networks, and through the leveraging of its strengths in optical transmission. Of course, how long Nortel can sustain these competitive advantages remained to be seen then and serious problems have since developed or have at least been revealed.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from reading this book? All of the executives now employed by Nortel, Cisco, and Lucent as well as by other "players" such as Siemens, Alcatel, and Ericsson. Also, all of the executives at other companies which now have (or seek) B2B relationships with any of the aforementioned "giants." Finally, other executives such as I who are not directly involved but are eager nonetheless to learn how and why some companies become "giants" (at least for a time) and others don't. I am deeply grateful to MacDonald for what I have learned from his book and thank him, also, for presenting his material with style, grace, and (when appropriate) a sense of humor.

Based upon extensive use of the Van Buren papers and other basic primary sources of the period, this is a readable, authoitative biography of the 8th President of the United States and a close political ally of Andrew Jackson, and later upholder of the Jacksonian tradition.

                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well written and comprehensive biography.......2007-09-04

I am currently reading a biography of every President in order. I realize with Martin Van Buren I am entering a long period of obscure Presidents, but very much looking forward to learning more about the chief executives between Jackson and Lincoln. Based on Amazon reviews, I decided that John Niven's biography was the best and most comprehensive choice.

Thankfully, I have not been disappointed. John Niven has written a readable and extremely well researched biography of our eigth President. I was most impressed with the depth of detail Niven has included and the voluminous research it undoubtedly required. Niven has clearly succeeded in covering the public life of Martin Van Buren comprehensibly and succinctly from his early days in New York politics to his final years as an active participant in the political turmoil leading to the Civil War.

The thoroughness this volume achieves regarding the political side of Van Buren's life comes at a price, however. At times this book is a dull read and seems to provide more detail, especially in the first third of the book dealing with New York machine politics, than most readers are likely to want or need. The book also does not delve very deeply into the personal side of Van Buren's life, although given that Van Buren's entire life revolved around politics (certainly far more than any previous President) this leaves fewer gaps than one might expect.

In summation, this is an excellent biography of Van Buren, though Niven obviously intended it to be a scholarly treatment meant primarily for academic level study. This biography is easy to read and well organized, though not the type of book you that you will likely want to read twice.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly detailed bio of an underrated American.......2005-04-21

I came away from this book with a new appreciation for Martin Van Buren--who was certainly much more than the Jackson coattail rider I thought previously. This is THE definitive biography of Martin Van Buren, but I agree with the other reviewers that some of the many and DETAILED accounts of the political machinations in New York at the time were a bit much. That's really the only complaint I had about the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and recommend it highly if you really want to know Van Buren.

4 out of 5 stars well written and informative.......2004-11-06

Like others, I've set out to read at least one biography on each American President. This particular biography is extremely well researched. A myriad of detail about Martin Van Buren and his times is presented. It's not the book if you are looking for a brief summary of the highlights of Van Buren's career, but if you are looking for detail it's great. Occasionally I got a little lost, probably due to my relative ignorance of the political figures and movements of those times. You form a definite picture of the little magician with both flaws and strengths brought forward. The one significant historical event that I didn't read about was the interaction of Van Buren with the early Mormons, of which I have read some very interesting things elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars The Life of the Little Magician.......2003-05-31

It is hard to tell how a man will do as President based on his experience. Some figures with virtually no political experience became good Presidents, such as Washington and Lincoln; others were failures such as Grant or Hoover. On the other hand, political experience is no guarantee of success: John Quincy Adams and James Buchanan had decent resumes going into office and had miserable presidencies. Martin Van Buren, one of the most politically talented of all Presidents, was not an utter failure, but he didn't shine in office either.

In Niven's biography, we follow Van Buren from his impoverished roots through his rise in New York state government. Although not perfect, Van Buren had enough political astuteness and the right sort of temperment to help create and lead a party machine and elevate New York's prominence on a national level. Becoming a trusted advisor to Andrew Jackson and a member of his cabinet eventually led to his Vice Presidency and then the Presidency. With a major financial crash occurring right as he got into office, Van Buren was struggling right off the bat, and wound up serving only a single term; nonetheless, in an era of one-term presidents (from 1837 to 1861, no president was re-elected), Van Buren was hardly thrown into ignonimy after his defeat; instead, he remained a powerful member of the Democratic party for the next two decades.

Niven's biography is generally favorable although he doesn't hide Van Buren's flaws. We learn of a man who was not a great ideologue but was one of the most masterful politicians of his era, holding his own with the often more prominent figures such as Jackson, Calhoun, Clay and Webster. He also wound up being a prominent figure in the anti-slavery movement, even running on the Free-Soil ticket at one point.

At times, however, this biography is a bit ponderous and often focuses so much on the political part of Van Buren's life that the personal part is pushed aside. Thus, although this may be the best Van Buren biography available (it may also be the only one), I cannot give it a full five stars. Nonetheless, this is overall a very good book and worth reading if you are interested in this period of history.

4 out of 5 stars Martin Van Buren.......2002-03-17

This is a very readable and interesting book that deals with the long and highly political life of Martin Van Buren. He comes off very well as a hard-working, fair and moral politician who practically establishes the democratic party as a well-oiled machine for both New York state and the United States. I have now read multiple books about the first eight presidents and he can hold his own with almost all of them so far. Highly recommended.

I found the method of writing was quite talented and well written. Though I do not agree with her misplaced anger. It is obvious that the Catholic Church had sustained her family through this difficult time that the war, chain smoking, addiction to valuum, etc. had brought upon their family. I fail to understand why her anger was not directed toward these aspects that were the real culprits in their miserable lives, NOT the church.

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for those lives touched by Manic Depression!.......1999-10-06

                                          Title: The Dilemma

                                          Author: Tina Goss

                                          ISBN: 1571971610

                                          Publisher: Pentland Press, Inc

                                          Published: 1999

Tina writes a compelling memoir of growing up with a father diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder (Manic Depression), a major mental disorder. Tina's dad spent a large part of his life in institutions, at a time when there was no real treatment for the illness. Patients at that time (in the 60's and 70's) were treated mainly by the use of restraints...either chemical (heavy anti psychotic tranquilizing medications) or physical (being bound to the bed by straps or strips of cloth). Tina's dad suffered both of these denigrating and humiliating circumstances.

The Dilemma is a story of unabridged love and support. It is a story of how Tina and her mother coped with his illness. Parts of it will bring tears to your eyes and other parts will have you laughing at the humor they employed to maintain their own sanity. They tried everything and remained ever hopeful that the next thing they tried would prove to be the answer to their prayers.

Yet Tina's Dad deteriorated. Physical illness in the form of severe emphysema entered the picture and he spent more and more time in hospital. Throughout it all, Tina was going through the normal trials and tribulations of growing up...surely enough for a young person without the added stress of a mentally ill parent.

Tina was writing college exams, her mother had just had surgery and her father was dying. What was Tina to do? Tell her mother? Keep it from her? It was the biggest dilemma Tina had ever faced

Read "The Dilemma" to find out more, a book I highly recommend to anyone looking for a personal glimpse of a courageous family living with a severe mental illness.

Note: Personally I strongly related to "The Dilemma". I grew up with a mother diagnosed Manic Depressive from 1950 until her death in 1974. Tina and I share many common bonds of feelings and experiences, though no two stories are ever the same. In 1979 I myself was diagnosed with the same disorder. Fortunately for me I am one of the lucky ones. Although there is no cure as yet, effective treatment is available. My psychiatrist told me from the beginning that in earlier years I would have spent my life institutionalized.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Life with a seriously ill manic-depressive parent........1999-06-14

The Dilemma is an excellent depiction of life with a severely ill manic-depressive parent, and the adaptations necessary for the family to survive as a unit.

Ms. Goss' attention to detail, her wit, and the story she shares with us make for a spellbinding book. Brew a pitcher of iced tea and get comfortable, because you won't be able to put this book down!

Treatment of manic-depression, or bipolar disorder, has improved by orders of magnitude in the last few years. But abuses by hospital staffers like the ones described in The Dilemma still continue.
