In February 1967, Air Force Lieutenant Vaughan arrived at Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taiwan to begin 14 months as a C-130 Hercules pilot facing combat conditions airlifting supplies and troops throughout Southeast Asia. Among his most harrowing duties was the aerial resupply of the Marine base at Khe Sanh during the most intense action of the Tet Offensive.

A rare airlifter's memoir of SE Asia.......2005-07-03
Runway Visions is the appropriately titled story of Captain Vaughan's experiences and "bringing up" as a C-130 aviator in Southeast Asia from February 1967 to April 1968, from a newly ordained aircraft commander (AC) at Dyess AFB to "new guy" novitiate in the right seat, progressing to the left seat as AC with a crew, and both seats as an instructor pilot, to check out the "new guys". Early in his fifteen-month tour, he is introduced to the harrowing landing required of An Khe Golf Course, relieved by the construction of a new runway nearby (An Khe Main), then back to the dread of the Golf Course when the new runway is closed for further improvement. Missions to Khe Sanh during his tour are described, the crew's Christmas dinner at the chow hall providing signs of the future siege.
Airlift operations during this time in that part of the world have been little documented, so this journal of a C-130 pilot is a welcome addition to the literature of military aviation for the period. Most pilots seem to have the most vivid impressions of their landing strips, regardless of time, place, or aircraft flown, and this book would be welcomed by many, especially those who know that runways are not always straight and level, or paved and lighted. Perhaps it would prove an awakening for those who don't, and should, as well.
Very good - if you are into C-130 stuff........2003-06-20
I bought this book because I am going into the Air Force Reserves as a C-130 pilot. I, of course, found it very interesting and informative, but I don't think I would recommend it to any non-pilots and would hesitate to recommend it to a non-airlift military pilot. A lot of people would find the topics he discusses very boring as compared to a fighter or bomber type memoir book. Nevertheless, I thought the stories he told were awesome - he talks about almost every mission the Hercules performs - hauling mail, booze, troops, dead bodies, ammo, and medical litters of injured troops. He also details the short-field capability of the C-130 flying into all of those fields in 'Nam. There are several hair-raising stories that he depicts where they are supplying the Marines at Khe Sahn during Tet and others where he is landing in bad weather, runways with craters, dirt strips, etc. He also mixes up the book with some details of the social life in Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines (he parallels the airlifting stories with stories about a chick he "hangs out" with in Bangkok.)
Anyway, I thought it was a great read, but I doubt most folks would think so unless they were very into the C-130 - like me.
A "must buy".......2002-03-07
I found David Kirk Vaughan's book about his experiences as an airlift pilot in Vietnam impossible to put down. His descriptions of action in and out of the cockpit are done such that they are very easy to understand, even if one is not a pilot. Yet, even the experienced military aviator will find some intriguing action there for him too.
Vaughan's description of landing at the "golf course" is but one example. Written in such a manner that the novice can appreciate the extreme difficulty of such a task, an aviator will nearly be in disbelief, especially after seeing the landing strip in one of the several photos that the author took during his tour and which are included in the book.
Of course there is plenty of action outside the cockpit, too. Again, I found Vaughan's descriptions superb as he related his travels throughout Thailand, Vietnam, the Phillipines and back "home" in Taiwan.
If one wishes to have a better understanding of the life of a military transport pilot or to have a record of Vietnam war airlift action, then this is a must buy!

Runway Visions is a memoir of a young pilot who volunteers to go to SE Asia and fly Hercules C-130 supply missions during the Viet Nam war.
David Vaughan tells a compelling tale, one that haunts me. It is not a story full of heroic rescues, though there is a little of that. It is the tale of a man looking back at himself and trying to make sense of what he did and saw. He holds little back.A difficult book to describe, but one that this reader found very satisfying. One of the best books I have read in a long time.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis is a case study of the extent to which a series of factors influenced development of the U.S. Army Target Acquisition Designation System/Pilot Night Vision System (TADS/PNVS). This study is one of a series being prepared under an ongoing research effort sponsored by Headquarters U.S. Army Material Command (AMC). These studies will look at various weapon systems that participated in Operation Desert Storm (ODS) and will study the effectiveness of their Development Strategies, for the purpose of later comparing system effectiveness in ODS. The TADS/PNVS was developed for the AH- 64A Apache Helicopter, as a sighting system for the Hellfire missile system. This case study focuses on the system's three critical technologies, evaluates their technical maturity at various stages versus Technology Readiness Levels, and analyzes how that affected the later development and testing. The study also highlights funding stability, user involvement, integrated product teams, and testing strategies. The thesis focuses particular attention on testing, and whether testing of the TADS/PNVS system was sufficient and timely during development.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: As society becomes increasingly information-oriented, the drive for more capable machines to retrieve, store, process and present such information anywhere, at anytime becomes paramount to success. This is true of United States Navy and Marine Corps officers who must manage large amounts of information while operating in remote areas. Today's very small, portable computers known as "palmtops" are capable of running powerful scaled-down versions of contemporary operating systems. When coupled with a transmission medium, palmtops represent a portable computer that can be used to communicate and process information in ad hoc environments. The Naval Postgraduate School Staff Officer Palmtop Computer Project is designed to analyze the effectiveness of Windows CE-based palmtop computers as an aide to professional Naval officers. The study project provides Naval officers with a popular palmtop computer and allows them to use the device for a four week period. During this time participants are encouraged to use the palmtop for work and personal information tasks. The primary complaints with these devices are ergonomically oriented. There is no convenient and reliable method of data entry and they cannot be easily carried while in uniform. Results from the study indicate that current Windows CE "handheld PCs" are not appropriate for use in this capacity. Recommendations for more useful portable personal computers complete this research.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis evaluates the effect of fully-funded graduate education on the joint outcome of promote to Pay Grade 5 and screen for squadron command for fixed-wing, carrier-based aviator lieutenant commanders (Pay Grade 4) eligible for the Pay Grade 5 board. Binomial logit models are estimated to examine the impacts of earning a graduate degree, the timing of the degree, and the technical specificity of the degree. The thesis finds no evidence that career progression at this critical point is harmed by acquiring a fully-funded graduate degree. Rather, the thesis finds significant positive effects on promote/screen for those officers earning advanced degrees at selected junctures. Logit model estimates show that aviators with fully-funded technical degrees earned one or more years after the Pay Grade 4 board are 26.9% more likely to promote/screen than aviators without graduate degrees. Additionally, officers who earned graduate degrees on their own time are 5.8% more likely to promote/screen than officers without graduate degrees.

Their jobs are accomplished through communication as they motivate soldiers and sailors, who in turn physically accomplish the diverse missions of the military. Junior officers in the Navy and Marine Corps hold key and challenging positions in any ship or unit. While they rarely originate any major initiatives or missions, they almost always give the final order or direction. Therefore they must be able to accurately communicate both up and down the chain of command. While communicating comes easily to some junior officers, many struggle with it, and most have room for improvement. The USNA recognizes the important role that it can play in developing junior officer communication abilities. One of the Academy's strategic initiatives is Oral and Written Communications Excellence. The focus of this thesis is oral communications. This thesis will identify what type of oral communications are prevalent in the fleet, what the important communication skills are that a junior officer must master, and how the Naval Academy and other institutions can help develop these skills in the future leaders of the Navy and Marine Corps.

Great correlation between business leadership and piloting........1999-08-07
John Magness does a tremendous job of relating the skills required to be sucessful in a business environment to the skills learned and mastered as a military helicopter pilot. The correlation is amazingly useful as a tool to simplify a businessman's perspective on how to prioritize those tasks which are mission critical, and also those which are not. The material is presented in a very easy-to-relate, entertaining fashion. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience, as well as the lessons learned.
Effective leadership principles.......1999-03-18
Pilot Vision is one of those books that is powerpacked with a handful of principles that when applied to your own personal leadership will powerfully leverage your effectiveness. It reads quickly and stays interesting. Magness makes some great metaphores with his experience as a combat pilot with the legendary "Nightstalkers". I enjoyed this book because after reading each chapter I was able to walk back into my office and apply the principles to my daily leadership.
Consider something else.......1999-03-13
Pilots are best known for their eyesight, and not their leadership skills. After all, flying an airplane requires very little teamwork and only mediocre communications skills. This is particularly true of fighter aircraft, where most are single-seat jobs. This self-centered bias is evident throughout this book, and the examples given are hardly worth emulating in real life.
The world of the pilot is best described as a monopoly, where artificial barriers such as eyesight requirements are used to exclude many competitors from the field. In the real world, it is very hard to practice this sort of discrimination and get away with it. The competition is much fiercer, and not everything goes as cleanly as in the rarified, controlled world of the pilot.
If you are running a one-person shop, then this books is great for you. But, if you have to lead people or work with groups of people, then this book only provides an example that you should not emulate.

I wish I'd had this book years ago! My husband's family business was recently in bankruptcy and was bought out by another company. They committed practically all of these "deadly sins". The information is practical, appliable, and very real life advice. Heed his warnings!
Anyone with a Family Business must read this!!!.......2007-01-27
I spent ten successful years working for my fathers very successful business. He told me I would take over the business "someday", he had a heart attack and retired but could not give up control. This is VERY common as I learned from this book. I spent the last 3-4 years waiting for him to deal with the future of his business. This book and some others I read finally convinced me to move on with my life. It was a difficult decision, but ultimately freed me to begin my life on my terms. If any owners of a family business are reading this, please read this book and talk with your heirs. Eventually you will die and someone will have to keep your business alive, if they have the desire and interest it may as well be one of your children... This was the best of the family business books I read (I made it through 6). Good luck!!!

This book, in a very neutral way, captures where families can go wrong, in the family business. Must read for all generations, both in and out of the business. Even if things are going great right now, read this book!
More Truth Than Many of Us Want to Admit.......2004-05-16
As a family business counselor and consumate reader, I continually look for new materials that can help clients--family members and non-family managers--better understand the family business enterprises in which they are employed...or enmeshed.
The title of this book turned me off. I know of no family business that can avoid the "socalled 7 deadly sins." Family baggage is part of family business.
Nonetheless, I recommend the book. My usual use of the book is education of non-family managers who work for family business. My favorite reading references for professional managers are by John L. Ward: Keeping the Family Business Healthy, and his revised, expanded update, Strategic Planning for the Family Business.
Family members may be willing to read the book, although I have limited experience with that. I would refer them to books like Working With The Ones You Love by Dennis Jaffe.
okay, although I understand that it's the best of it's type.......2003-05-13
Depending upon the health of your family (and family business) most of this book does not really apply. The author also openly states that. However, he does say that it only takes one of the "7 sins" to take down a family business and it does allow for some forewarning of things that should be avoided.
He does cover a lot of ground, including immigrant businesses, a good section on succession of the business, and touches on both small and large family businesses.
I found quite a bit of it to also be his sales pitch, implying that every family business should hire, in the foreground or background, a consultant, a lawyer, an accountant, and possibly a therapist =D
Overall, it's an okay book covering topics which hopefully most people are aware of and warning you about things you may not be. If you are facing problems, this book may help you either diagnose it yourself or he suggests things to look for in an outsider to help you diagnose it.

Robert W. Barnum presents both symptoms and treatments for problems that generally arise in these four key areas:
· Improving internal relationships by keeping minor conflicts between team members from escalating to major problems.
· Strengthen team focus by establishing and maintaining a clear sense of direction, minimizing change anxiety, and establishing and maintaining focused priorities.
· Dealing with the challenges of change by proper use of coordination and innovation. Team must be able to anticipate challenges, especially those that threaten the team directly. Some of these challenges can be viewed as opportunities for growth. The distinctions are important.
· Mending external relationships. Teams need to know who are their customers, as the customers are the team's reason for being.
Of these four key areas, the author focuses on the team's ability to anticipate changes by submitting eight steps to successfully creating a scenario forecast. These steps are:

I am currently conducting team building activities for different organizations and Robert Barner's framework has given me a clear idea on how to diagnose team problems---and define interventions. Complemented with other management books, this book---but then, this is more than a book---this is a tool kit--- provides enough tools yet whets your appetite to crave for more learnings. Again, this book (and toolkit), will be a valuable addition to anyone whose passion for teams is unquenchable.
