5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Your Career Development.......2005-12-22

Farr's book was recommended by my thesis committee member and now I recommend it to students that I mentor. Too bad Betty lumped Farr's book with "What color is my parachute". I was never able to slog my way through that book, but did many of the exercises in Farr's book while doing nordic track because they were so straight forward. I liked how he has you 'free-thinking' about what career you would enjoy if there were no limitations and then helps you bring that back to reality so you can see what IS possible for you to do with your career right now. The step-by-step exercise of breaking down time to meet your goal was invaluable as I was finishing my PhD research. And I still use it today. I strongly feel that his book gave direction to my career. I currently enjoy my position as a director of a department in a pharmaceutical company.

5 out of 5 stars This book won the top career book of the year award.......2004-05-27

I am this book's author and think it worthwhile to note that this book won the Publisher's Marketing Association's "Best Career Book of the Year" award. This was a surprise for me since this is a workbook that includes text with lots of in-the-book activities rather than a typical bookstore book that is almost all text. This is the fourth edition, so it has been carefully improved over time and has had excellent editorial and design work. It has now sold more than 400,000 copies, a most flattering and humbling situation for me.

5 out of 5 stars This was excellent.......2003-05-29

This book is worth buying. It has very practical advice and a system about how to go about a job search in the non traditional way. I would also recommend Richard Bolles' What Color is Your Parachute and Howard Figler's The Complete Job Search Guide.

My wife has thousands of recipe books, given to her as gifts over the holidays. She loves to cook, but gets tired of spending all day preparing or purchasing a very expensive spice that we'll only use for one meal. This book throws all of that out the door. With a busy lifestyle and a modest budget, this book can be the answer to all of your problems. Each recipe takes about 30 minutes to make and like the book says, only takes 4 ingredients. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Great as a present to college students or those people who want good food with less hassle.

First of all, I have to admit that I have a copy of this book for sale in Marketplace. As a rule, I don't review books I'm selling but I'm making an exception for this book. I actually bought several of these but the rest are going for gifts.

It's a big beautiful hardcover with gorgeous pictures of every recipe. Directions are simple and well explained. My only complaint is a lack of nutritional information (which is why I rated it a '4' instead of a '5').

Lots of different recipes which range from traditional ('Barbecue Beef Ribettes', 'Hot Spicy Tangy Sticky Chicken') to fancy ('Rosemary-Crusted Leg of Lamb') to more exotic ('Jamaican Jerked Pork', 'Guadalajara Beef').

Most trading systems and books focus on identifying trends in the marketplace. Yet futures markets trend only 15% of the time--remaining 85% of the time they are trendless and ``choppy''. Barnes unprecendented book on how to make money in all markets gives you 20 proven trading methods that will prepare you for virtually every trading situation. Sample methods and results include: Acceleration Principle (Silver) -46/54 trades profitable, average profit per trade 214; Boxed Size Breakout Contra Method (Gold) - 19/22 trades profitable, average profit per trade 437; Contra Price Volume Confirm Method (T-bonds) - 24/25 trades profitable, average profit per trade 585.

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas but can you trust the author?.......1999-11-10

Barnes does have some interesting ideas, but if you have Tradestation or similar, test everything! I found one system badly fudged -- it looks good only if you use the exact data used in the test. Go earlier or later and the system looks pretty bad. I am suspicious and in any case if you have to go over everything in a book to verify it, it's too much work.

5 out of 5 stars Reader from New Jersey Mistaken....Badly.......1999-07-04

The previous review gave this book one star and used as a reason the mistaken statement that the author's win/loss ratio on simulated silver contracts was 46/54. For those of you who KNOW what these numbers mean (active traders, most likely) you know that this means 46 OUT OF 54 trades were profitable. In my book this turns out to be 85%. Try doing THAT with a coin-flip.

In my opinion Robert M. Barnes is one of the most insightful traders/authors in the business. His systems, analysis and technical know-how are matched by very few. This is yet another very succinct, well-written, and technically informed book by the author. Anyone interested in serious short-term, high-profit trading would do well to have this manual in their arsenal.

1 out of 5 stars 46 to 54 win to loss in silver...a coin flip could do better.......1999-04-20

Odds like Robert is quoting for this trade method, I could do better flipping a coin. You can too. Go ahead try flipping a coin 100 times, see whate the results are. Better yet, if you have a computer, excell, lotus, or whatever spreadsheet, use the randomn number generator.

The author presents various scenarios that are supported by past events. Timelines, degree and origin of crisis miss the bullseye, but not the target. The author does mention CMO's, which sound like the CDO debacle now unfolding due to subprime loans packaged within these securities.
Extremely enlightening. An excellent bargain for .01 cent. It's the ultimate "contrarian" purchase for a personal finance book.

5 out of 5 stars This book offers perspective.......2002-05-10

This book shows a breadth of knowledge and depth of investigation that is rarely offered to the investing public. The fact that the book ends with a chapter on Further Reading indicates that the author respects the intelligence of his readers and is interested in what he is writing. A book of this quality shows by example how much junk is out there, yet the author is modest and always seeks to help the reader, not exhort. I read it after the onset of the two year bear market and in some ways, not all of the predictions have been met yet, making this book still worth your reading. The persistent heavy volume of trading in the QQQs and the recent snap back rally (5/2002)suggest that the public is seeking further punishment and the crisis is not yet matured. I hope the author rewrites it with the current changes in the market in mind: iShares, ETFs, gold and the rediscovery of the emerging market (only a rediscovery to the amnesiac). His style is intelligent and refreshing. You'll need to read it carefully, since some ideas only appear fully developed in a single passage. I couldn't put it down.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent, hard-hitting, thought-provoking, wake-up call.......1999-09-06

I can't understand why this book is listed out of print. Why aren't more people demanding this book? Maybe there aren't enough investors yet who are worried about the safety of their money.

Just recently (Sept 99) a few money market funds ran into a bit of trouble - exactly the kind of trouble described in this book. Are you still assuming that your money market fund is safe and that a fixed NAV of $1 will be maintained?

The book definitely opened up my eyes to other alternatives for places to put money. Because of this book I've rediscovered alternatives like Treasury Bills and savings bonds.

However I did question the author's suggestions for a self-directed portfolio containing municipal bonds and widely held stocks. After the Orange County, California fiasco I would not consider municipal bonds. And I would question the idea of holding the same widely-held stocks that the institutional investors hold.

4 out of 5 stars THIS STOCK MARKET BUBBLE WILL SOON BURST!.......1998-05-06

This is a book that should be read by anyone that considers themselves to be PRUDENT investors. When people say they are LONG-TERM investors, do they really know what they are saying? What do they mean? Do they realize that a dollar invested today may be worth 1.25 in 6 months -(due to the mania of this market) - but only worth 50 cents in 5 or 10 years? It could likely be worse than that. These mutual funds are being run by young hot shots that have no concept of doing anything but putting "money to work" (buying) due to the massive influx of money pouring in over the years. All reasonable valuation models have been trashed and "investors" have become extremely complacent because it's been so easy to "make" money. Sorry, it's not that easy or realistic! The selling will soon come in waves. Be wise and prepare youself for what will go down in history as the worst bear market ever, followed by a worldwide depression. Best of luck to all! P.S. I also recommend a book called "THE WARNING" by Joseph Granville and "THE GREAT CRASH of 1929" by John Galbraith. The parallels between then and now are too striking to ignore. So don't be one of the mindless herd.................

5 out of 5 stars History's lessons are often learned the hard way..........1998-04-18

Just as speculators were lured into joint stock companies centuries ago (e.g., Tulipomania, South Sea Bubble), and investors of all kinds were seduced by unrealistic promises of stock pools and investment trusts of the 1920s and the "Go-Go Mutual Fund Mania" of the 1960s, so too are today's savers-turned-speculators being led down a path toward financial tragedy by the "New Era", "buy-and-hold" mania that has gripped the public's imagination for the past seven years. Christensen warns investors of the pitfalls and potential disaster that awaits anyone who thinks that mutual funds are a good way to diversify against risk. Mutual funds use derivatives, borrow from one another, engage in margin speculation, and are increasingly less shareholder friendly as massive inflows of money from uninformed savers breed arrogance and abandonment of risk aversion by mostly inexperienced, starry-eyed portfolio managers under 35 years of age. When the public discovers stocks and other financial assets, the risk becomes extreme and the party is almost over. Don't be one of those caught blaming the portfolio manager, the government, or Wall Street, when the blood starts flowing and you lose your life savings in a matter of a year or two.

The origins of her work lie in the early observations by Aristotle (Greek philosopher who lived between 384-322 B.C) that there are four basic personalities which show through strongly in organisations aswell as individuals. Knowing this you can predict the knock-on effect of a merger between two distinctly different organisations (were a logical merger seems OK - in fact it may not be and may cost you dearly). Worth the read!

5 out of 5 stars A journal of great personal growth value.......2002-05-01

I met Nancy on an airplane. She was reading her own book, interestingly enough. It's been a year since it was published and it was her time for to re-trace her own footsteps in the path she once walked. It's a journal that was thankfully written for her own purposes and thankfully shared in "Through the Barren Trees". Sometimes it takes a shock to the system, a test of your humanity, a disaster, perhaps a windfall, to test one's resilience. In this case, Nancy's resilience was tested, and she rebounded with apparently a stronger spirit. It's a story about growing spiritually. It's a story about "why we're here" It's a story worth reading if you're on a path towards you're own enlightened self. I'm pretty sure you can find value in it regardless of your religious tendency. It's not a religious book, it's a spiritual one. Enjoy. Thank you for sharing, Nancy!
