                Book Description

Amid great concern for universal health care is succinct, well documented, accessible review of malpractice liability in health care and related professions. Freedman explores the nature of malpractice using commonly understood codes of ethics and statements of principles promulgated by the major associations of the health care industry itself, and then looks at malpractice liability from the viewpoint of court decisions and the "fact patterns" on which they are based. He also considers professional malpractice insurance and the right of health care industry professionals to determine for themselves whether the gains to be had from settling a claim out of court might outweigh the potential benefits from a successful litigation. Not just for attorneys but for their clients too, Freedman's book guides professionals through the principles of malpractice law, and in doing so provides them with guidance they need in today's "malpractice crazed" society.

                Book Description

Wouldn't you like to know just what to say to the people who make it difficult?

Your Boss, for instance? How about appliance repair people, auto mechanics, lawyers, wine snobs, and doctors? Haven't you ever wished you knew just what to say to the banker reviewing your loan application?

At one time or another, we all have to interact with overbearing and even intimidating figures like these. Mark Ruskin's Speaking Up shows how to hold your ground with all of them-and countless others. From getting a raise to getting your VCR fixed, from explaining the problems behind a failed project to extracting a refund for a faulty piece of merchandise, and from buying time to buying a new car. Speaking Up shows how to make the world of words work for you, not against you. And the principles it lays down work against even that most formidable of adversaries: IRS auditor!

5 out of 5 stars Tai Kwan Do for the workplace.......2005-06-11

I was a graduate student in a biomedical research lab when I happened upon this book at a Kinko's copies one typically neurotic day. Believe me when I say that it was like a lifesaver to a drowning man. The book is written with corporate office jobs in mind, but it can be useful to just about any kind of power relationship. Basically it's like Tai-Kwan-Do for the workplace, giving you powerful practical methods for dealing with situations in which someone is abusing, or irresponsibly using, their authority.

There are two key ingredients to this book: (1) a breakdown of bosses into different personality types, and (2) lists of words and phrases to use or avoid with each type. The idea is to narrow down your strategy by learning a bit about the psychology of your boss, what kinds of things probably motivate him or her, etc. This way you can look past the immediate sources of frustration and start to understand your boss "from within". Then, the next step is to use that knowledge to craft your interactions with your boss so that they work out better for you.

I must repeat that this book is a brilliant little treatise, as useful and economical in its way as a Martial Arts training manual.

5 out of 5 stars Speak up for yourself!.......2005-06-08

The format of Mark Ruskin's "Speaking Up" is designed to be very non-threatening to the casual reader. It's meant to be simple and easy to absorb. Each section starts out with some talk about a type of person or interaction and the sorts of problems that can arise. This is followed by a list of words to use, phrases to use, words to avoid, and phrases to avoid. I think this is very handy--words can come loaded with all sorts of emotional connotations, and it's true that some words and phrases can make things worse or better. By listing such things out Ruskin gives us a toolbox from which to construct our own solutions to problems.

Next the entry provides a sample script for handling the situation along with a few words about how the scenario might proceed. This is followed by responses to anticipate and how you might reply to them.

"Speaking Up" truly encourages you to work to solve problems. It would be easier to simply teach you to say the right things, but this book goes further than that. It encourages you to work hard to solve problems in a way that will make you and those around you happy, or at least satisfied. It explains things so you'll understand why people respond the way they do in certain situations.

It makes things straightforward and easy. There are no in-depth psychological discussions, although you can tell this man truly knows what he's doing in that area. There are no treatises on interpersonal relations, although again, you can tell that Ruskin really does know his stuff. He also knows when to give a few simple instructions and let them speak for themselves.

The book encourages wonderful approaches to teamwork, standing up for yourself, and so on. It teaches you not to take abuse lying down, but it also shows you that things such as criticism and owning up to your mistakes are important. Ruskin then goes on to explain how you can use even unmerited criticism as an opportunity for learning and developing a better relationship with others.

I could go on for a while about this book, but hopefully I've already made my case. This is a truly useful book, and it encourages attitudes that could make any workplace or household easier--if not downright pleasant--to be in. It's one of those rare books that I find myself wanting to give to everyone around me to read.

                3 out of 5 stars Good for a Read.......2002-05-26

The book was not absolutely ingenius, nor the ideas presented here are of any ground-breaking value. Yet, the author delivers a set of pre-formatted rhetorics that can help you "Speak Up" and assert yourself.

Bottom line, don't be a wuss; be strong; don't let anybody else put you down... These are the ideas. Now in order to put these ideas into practice and won't have you come off as a "mean person" - that takes art. Ruskin can be a help in that art - but the art itself is a personal goal for any of you that may be seeking to refine - which I might add, it would take years.

So, all in all, this book won't change your life, but it can help along. It is still you in the end that determines where your life leads, which is why these books are called "self-help." So, help yourself to a copy if it makes you feel better, but either way, Help Yourself in your own personal goals.

Describing eggs as "the ultimate and purest fast food," Gayle Pirie and John Clark set off on an enticing culinary journey through 78 recipes in Country Egg, City Egg, with whimsical drawings by Rollin McGrail adding to the fun. Formerly chefs at San Francisco's much-loved Zuni Cafe, Pirie and Clark enchant readers with eggs elegantly embellished with caviar, easily scrambled with pesto, simply rolled inside a warm tortilla, gently slipped into chicken broth for comforting Zuppa Pavese, and whipped into a frothy, champagne-spiked Sabayon Sauce to serve with fresh berries.

Rustic recipes and more urbane dishes capitalize on the egg's versatility. The Country Eggs section offers eggs baked in half a vine-ripened tomato for summer, as well as the green-and-gold beauty of a frittata layered with tender zucchini and squash blossoms. City Eggs encompasses pan-scrambled eggs enlivened with chopped parsley and green onions and other quick everyday recipes. Pillowy popovers and poached eggs tucked into nests made from patties of potato puree browned in butter provide more leisurely weekend treats. --Dana Jacobi

                Book Description

There isn't a more delicious little book on eggs than this treasure by former chefs at the very popular and much-acclaimed Zuni Café in San Francisco. Gayle Pirie and John Clark spent eight years cooking, thinking about, and writing menus for eggs, and it is no wonder that these are inspired creations. From the most rustic country dishes—eggs baked in braised-mashed potatoes—to smooth and sleek city dishes—caviar and scrambled eggs—here are eggs around the clock, for every meal of the day, including dessert. Here too are the best hard-cooked eggs you'll ever make, the most seductively flavored omelets, tortas, and frittatas, and a dish so delicious yet so simple that the eggs get cracked right into the skillet. No need to mess up a single bowl!

With a few eggs in the fridge, something great to eat is just a few seconds away. When it comes to comfort, simplicity, infinite versatility, downright goodness, and affordability—nothing beats eggs!

5 out of 5 stars Country Egg, City Egg.......2002-01-08

Gail and John are two of the best chefs around, and I know this from personally experiencing their recipies, not only at Zuni, but in their own kitchen as well. My aunt and uncle have always made amazing meals and made it look like the easiest thing in the world to do. Now thanks to their book, other people can do it also. I highly recomend their book and I just hope that someday I will inherit some of their amazing cooking skills.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of egg dishes not found in ordinary cookbooks........2000-05-04

Over five dozen recipes for eggs are presented in book packed with winning egg uses, from make-head tomato 'nests' holding eggs to steamed eggs with vinegar and herbs. Country Egg, City Egg is for the egg fan who needs no visual embellishment: recipes are very easy to reproduce without them and provide a wealth of egg dishes not to be found in every cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Eggs a la Gail and John.......2000-04-24

A collection of well thought out, quick and easy egg recipes from two of my long time favorite chefs. Outside of a couple of dishes calling for truffles or caviar almost all of the ingedients can be found at the local supermarket. There are some usefull cooking tips scattered about (one I liked was using a cheap plastic squeeze bottle to control olive oil while making mayonnaise) and even a fledgling cook shouldn't have any trouble following the directions. The recipes also lend themselves to substitution and improvisation if one desires. All and all, a well thought-out, concise, egg cookbook with enough content to keep egg lovers scrambling and poaching for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Fast meals. Homey or haute........2000-03-12

It's not often that I rave about a cookbook or insist that my Mom and sister buy one too but this is one of those books you gotta have in your collection. The kind of book that will end up with food stuck to the pages that will soon be a bit tattered and bent from fingers flying through them in search of the next easy meal. The recipes are down to earth simple, require few ingredients and small time investments. But the BEST part of the book is that you're made to feel as if you got a sneak peak into the recipe box of two great chefs. And you do. But you don't feel like a dummy trying to cook their food. Cuz these two prove, less is more & simple is best.

4 out of 5 stars Country proverbs where the translation for city people is really not necessary.......2006-08-27

Even though the limits largest city in Eastern Iowa was less than five miles away, I grew up in a rural area. Both of my grandparents lived within seven miles of our house and neither one had indoor plumbing. My paternal grandparents lived until they died in a house that had no electricity or running water. Sayings like those found in this book were regular fare on the radio and from many of the people that I interacted with. Since I went to an urban school system, many of the things that I could talk about were incomprehensible to my classmates.
These sayings appear in two forms, the true "country" form and a more urbanized form. Some examples are:

*) "Now, don't that just blow your dress up!"
                *) "Roosters crow, hens deliver."
*) "If you have to fight, make sure you don't have the short stick."

                My favorite was:

*) Twenty yards to the outhouse seems like a mile on a cold winter morning.

Since I spent a lot of overnights at my grandparents I can speak from experience that the prospect of walking out to the outhouse at 6 AM when it is below zero forces you into an internal debate. The question becomes, "Which is worse, wetting the bed or freezing your body parts." You really do debate this issue.
I enjoyed this collection of sayings, although the translations really aren't all that necessary. Most of the sayings are easy to understand and intelligent people will be able to discern the meaning.

                  Book Description

This book addresses two key issues of central importance in emerging electronic markets: first, improved coordination of supply and demand through options / forward contracts on output and capacity, and second the integration of such contracting methods with B2B exchanges and electronic markets. The book provides both a thorough review and synthesis of the growing literature in these areas as well extending this literature to accommodate state-dependent demand and contracting. The latter is an important issue since the spot markets for many markets, e.g. energy, are fundamentally conditioned on such variables as temperature, and therefore these "states" need to be accomodated in the underlying theory of financial instruments supporting such contracting. A discussion of emerging applications in logistics, energy, chemicals and e-manufacturing illustrate the importance of the subject matter.

                          Book Description

Jim Man writes, "In 1972, being twelve was like a future unto itself. I was always in search of adventure around Greenbelt Lake, but the funny thing was that the adventures seemed to find me. The lake was a key which unlocked a treasure trove of events and characters that became permanently embedded in my soul. People like Dwight, who was picked up and carried three miles by a tornado and lived to tell about it. Stevie "Wander" Johnson, a nine-year-old who, like a mirage, would appear from out of nowhere riding his mini-bike. The freedom we had at the lake fueled these adventures, but freedom is a privileged rope whose length is sometimes nebulous. And boy, did we stretch it!"

5 out of 5 stars Greenbelt:A Nostalgic Return to Texas Childhood.......2001-05-10

Greenbelt brought back childhood memories of a Texas lake and the antics one can get away with as a young kid. It reminded me of times that I had not considered in ages. Times when I was invincible.

The stories in this book transcend a regional area, they could have occurred on a Texas Panhandle lake, a California beach or on a Iowa farm.

Read this book to remind you of your own childhood or to remind you of a childhood you wish you had lived!!

5 out of 5 stars Summer adventure at its finest!!.......2001-05-04

Released just in time for for summer reading, I heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure. Jim Man's style is easygoing, and at the same time compelling. I kept reading "just one more chapter" to find out what would happen next to Jim, Dwight, and the other colorful characters. This book truly is a return to a simpler time in the not too distant past. A time when kids explored the outside world on their own, and a Mother's parting words were "Be home in time for supper".

5 out of 5 stars I've never read a book that made me laugh like "greenbelt".......2001-04-16

I picked up the book on a Friday night. I was skeptical at best, but everybody leaves the bookstore with a book; and besides, the author was at the bookstore doing the dog and pony show trying to sell some of his books. Politely, I bought the book, came home and was mesmerized for the next four hours (I am a slow reader). I liked the size of the book, it wasn't real intimidating and I thought I would give it at least three chapters. That was all it took and I was hooked. A NOSTALGIC RETURN is exactly what I got. Mr. Man's book took me back to my own childhood and the amazement that I (and he)lived through it. Chapter after chapter was adventure, exploit, and just good ole' childhood mischief. I finished the book that night (to my wife's dislike). Several times she woke up and hit me with the pillow because the bed was shaking from my laughter. I honestly couldn't put the book down. Anyway, for what it is worth, I wish I had the book to look forward to. Write on Mr. Man, Bart boxwell

5 out of 5 stars lively, genuine, and entirely too short.......2001-01-26

Here we have Jim Man's portrait of a summerful of visits to a lake house in north Texas of 1972 (age 12). The outstanding quality of Man's writing is its credibility: on a topic almost hand-crafted as a foundation for tall tales, I'm darned if I don't believe just about everything he says.

I too grew up in the 1970s in the West, and we did in fact use to shoot at one another with BB guns, dig through any half-ruined building available to us, and gad about on any wheeled vehicle we could scrounge up. While Jim's story is one of a lot of fun--some better and cleaner than others--it is a story of lessons learned about himself and others. Jim's friend Dwight is an especially compelling character, the kind you can't invent; they either are authentic or they are not. (His accent, by the way, is authentic. He sounds precisely like my very rural, very Texan father-in-law.) By the end of the book--which I wish had been longer--I really wanted to know what ever became of the boys in the book.

As a book for young people, I'd rate it PG-13: the author could have easily pushed it toward R-17, but a visible effort was made to take the edges off the language and content; this effort might not get the credit it deserves, but parents buying books for their children will appreciate it. If you're raising kids today, _Greenbelt_ will encourage you to pose the question: how come we turned out all right in spite of the fact that we behaved like Jim and his cohorts? It will appeal especially to anyone who likes motorcycles, fishing/boating, and modern-day Tom Sawyer hijinks. For anyone who grew up in rural Texas, naturally, the appeal will be even stronger. I came away liking the genuinely warm, adventuresome Man family, and I reckon a lot of readers will too.
