Book Description
Legal harmonization is an essential step to encouraging foreign investment in Africa and the development of sustainable pan-African trade. Now in a fully updated 2nd edition, Business Law in Africa explains the new system of law, now being developed and promoted by the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa. OHADA's essential aim is to promote economic integration and development by creating a secure legal framework for the conduct of business in Africa. In order to achieve this aim, OHADA has enacted a number of laws, known as Uniform Acts, on various aspects of business law including commercial and company laws, insolvency, securities and arbitration. These Uniform Acts are directly applicable throughout OHADA's member states and the intention is to recruit further members and to spread the principles of OHADA across Africa. This authoritative book offers an overview of the aims and achievements of the OHADA system and explains in depth the legislation that has been issued to date.
Product Description
At home or in the workplace, change is an inevitable fact of life. How we choose to respond to it - as leaders or as followers - determines our personal and professional growth. Growing the Distance is about developing the leader within all of us. This helps us to continue "growing at the speed of change." A central theme of the book is that leadership is action, not a position. We all need to be leaders regardless of our formal title or role. This starts with inner self leadership and moves outward to influence, guide, support, and lead others. Leadership ultimately shows itself in what we do "out there," but it starts "in here."
Customer Reviews:
Avoid the Victimitis Virus!.......2006-09-08
Jim starts the book with the point that too many development books are "like a pair of steer horns--a point here and a point there, with a whole lot of bull in between." When you are finished with this book, you won't be asking "Where's the beef?" I liked his philosophy of using quotes throughout the text, "If I couldn't have said it better myself, I won't make you wade through pages of text to prove it." And he didn't!
I picked up this book as I was thinking of my professional growth, but found the principles even more applicable at home in my role as father. I learned along side my children how to keep our rate of internal growth faster than external change so we won't be victims. Now my kids use Jim's comments of not getting "The Victimitis Virus" and staying out of "Pity City".
Just like eating peanuts........2006-09-01
If this were a novel, reviewers would be saying things like "fast-paced," "exciting," and "inspirational."
This book connects leadership, personal growth and success in life in a format designed for easy reading and high impact. Although I actually read the books I'm asked to review, not just scan for content, I've found some books can't be read straight through because they aren't designed for it. "Growing The Distance" is one of those. It is in digest format, a collection of short, short articles that follow a common theme, each building on the prior articles to form a coherent book. Each article also is able to stand alone without reference to the others. Thus, you can explore the ideas in the book at random, sampling here and there according to your attraction to a title.
And, it is preferable to read this book by scanning and sampling. Each "article" has so much condensed meaning that you need to stop and think about the ideas, anecdotes and quotations within. Like eating peanuts, you keep going back and nibbling some more.
A refreshing view.......2006-08-26
I've grown tired of business books that have good lessons but don't inspire me.
Jim's book IS NOT one of those.
It is fresh and inspiring. I really like the writing style.
weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2002-06-10
The first thing that strikes you about "Growing the Distance" is its unique format and layout. Unlike many books written strictly for business, this publication is alive with style, relevant quotations, humorous quips and interesting fonts. Whereas beauty is only skin deep, this book has helpful and attractive information from cover to cover. Author Jim Clemmer is the founder and president of The CLEMMER Group, a strategic consulting firm. Jim is a best selling author, workshop/retreat leader, and keynote speaker on organization improvement, leadership development, and personal effectiveness. Clemmer presents the values and philosophy he models to others in this fine book.
One of the main messages that clearly jumps out at the reader is this powerful theme...leadership and change is a living philosophy that must permeate every aspect of life including family, career, personal responsibility and self-fulfillment. Many business books on leadership put the various life roles of a leader in separate boxes. Business is one box, family life is another box, personal goals and self-actualization in yet another box. It is often assumed that these various roles have little to do with each other and for this reason family life and spirituality are typically ignored. "Growing the Distance" is not afraid to challenge this misconception by boldly discussing a leader's various interconnected roles!
"Growing the Distance" is a book about creating positive change within yourself rather than being the victim of change. Its powerful premise is that we can begin from where we are today, and choose where we want to be tomorrow. By making these choices we can grow the distance. Clemmer believes that each of us can develop the qualities of leadership that reside inside us no matter what our position in life. This publication discusses what leadership is, why change is essential, and the importance of vision, values and purpose. Clemmer encourages personal accountability for our choices and writes how we can learn and grow from disappointments. He encourages us to find commitment and passion in our workplace, as well as in spirit, and meaning within our lives. He proceeds to discuss growth and personal development while reminding us that great leaders are able to energize others to motivate themselves.
If you want to read a book and be enthusiastic about your leadership potential, "Growing the Distance" is a must. It will inspire you and help to mesh together the various roles and activities of your life. This book is truly different and will find a happy home on your bookshelf!
I absoultely loved it!.......1999-11-11
I can truely say this is my favourite book!I have read it at least 3 times already and I'll probably read again and again!
Book Description
At last, a guide for those cooks who are oppressed by recipes which are often as peremptory and seemingly illogical as barracks room orders. The Cookbook Decoder lets us in on the REASONING behind recipes, what ingredients are vital to success, why some utensils do a better job than others, and which timing sequences are mandatory. And, it goes ahead to provide the reader with a framework for thinking about and modifying recipes with self-assurance. Peppered with over 120 recipes and more than 20 kitchen experiments ("autodemonstrations"), the Decoder is an invaluable tool for understanding, appreciating, and working creatively with man's oldest chemical experiment: cooking.

Food Facts explained with Humor, plus really useful recipes........2005-01-07
`The Cook Book Decoder or Culinary Alchemy Explained' by retired Canadian professor of Chemistry, Arthur E. Grosser is easily the spiritual godfather of current impresario of culinary information, Alton Brown, in that it seeks to explain everyday cooking phenomena with a big dollop of humor.
While this little book pales in comparison to Harold McGee's encyclopedic coverage of food science in `On Food and Cooking', this book serves its purpose by making it easy to read and to understand a few good facts about a few really important aspects of food chemistry. Oddly enough, the book also can revive interest in some backwaters of cooking technique.
It is meet and right that the very first subject is the egg, the single most useful natural product in the kitchen. In this chapter, the author introduces a feature of his book that would make it an excellent text for a grammar school or middle school course in food science. A chemist to the end, the author offers numerous suggestions on simple experiments that may be performed with standard kitchen equipment. The first topic is the whys and wherefores of cooking a hard-boiled egg. This is my first sense that the good professor may have a few clay feet. In my great survey of cooking praxis, there are two competing methods for successfully making a hard-boiled egg. The method endorsed by this author suggests poking a hole in the blunt end of the eggshell and dropping the prepared egg into boiling water. The alternate method which my experience shows works equally well involves placing the raw eggs in cold water in a pan on the burner and bringing the water and eggs up to boiling whereupon both methods have us simmer eggs for about 12 minutes. Oddly, the second method relies on a fact of egg anatomy that the author clearly describes and uses as a justification for his recommendation. This is the presence of tiny pores in the eggshell at the blunt end. The cold start uses these by increasing heat slowly. The hot start uses the same principle, but helps its case by creating a much larger hole to let air escape from the egg rather than build up pressure and crack the shell. All of this is relatively unimportant beside the fact that the author's discussion of egg cookery is both entertaining and informative.
One of this book's greatest services may be the author's giving us procedures on how to bake and how to coddle eggs. I have not seen such loving attention paid to egg cookery lately except in the very French `Essential Cuisine' by Chef Michel Bras. Compared to the arcane techniques needed to poach eggs or cook omelets, coddling and baking seem to be simplicity itself. And, coddling offers an enormous range of enhancements comparable in many ways to the great variety of omelet preparations.
Aside from eggs, the author discusses:
Vegetables, especially their colors and how colors are affected by cooking.
Garlic, Onions, Cabbage, and Potatoes, and how these smelly veggies can be tamed
Beast and Bird and how to keep juicy
Fish: Food for Thought and how to fry
A Bowl of Plastic Fruit and Thou
Sauces, Cereal, Pasta and Other Thick Things
Desserts: "It Comes with the Meal"
Baking: "If It's Enriched, It Needs Enrichment"
Beverages: The Devil's Works
Each chapter ends with a nice little resume that is much more a collection of mottoes for improving our cooking than it is a summary of the facts presented in the chapter. These are suggestions you hear from all the `Food Network' experts for which our author has given us the explanation of why these are good things to do or to avoid. This `resume' is the basis for the book's whimsical title, as it explains this kitchen lore which cookbook writers and chefs have been following for generations, often with no thought to why the practices work.
I did find a few other nits to pick. The author was curiously obtuse in explaining the origin of the term `Maillard reactions', as if this former professor was quite satisfied in passing on what may be no more than hearsay. These phenomenons, along with caramelization, are two cornerstones of our understanding of what happens when high heat encounters sugars and protein. This tells me that while the good professor was a chemist, he was not a professional `food chemist'. Another small lapse is in his explanation of why it is important to have a high oil temperature when putting fish in to fry. Grosser states that this is needed to form a crust to keep the oil from entering the flesh and creating a greasy dish. A much more likely explanation from both Alton Brown and Shirley Corriher is that the high heat turns water in the food into steam and the outward pressure of the steam bars the oil from entering the food. While it may seem to be a small point, as both explanations recommend a high oil heat, the steam explanation means that food should be removed from the hot oil as soon as the flesh is cooked, while the crust explanation suggests the food could stay in the oil indefinitely without becoming greasy. So, the correct explanation is important for practical cooking.
As mentioned at the outset, this book makes excellent use of humor to make this subject entertaining. Other virtues that distinguish this book from some others are the very nice little experiments and the practical summaries. Even if you have memorized your McGee and have read other good food science books such as `The Science of Cooking' by Bristol University (UK) don Peter Barham, I recommend Dr. Grosser's inexpensive little volume, especially if you have budding adolescent cooks under your wing.
The Right Chemistry.......2000-11-16
Arthur Grosser makes acquiring useful knowledge an appetising prospect. This book's combination of chemical facts, easy and delicious recipes and fun cartoons makes it an excellent read and a useful gift. The text is clear, the style amusing and the results gratifyingly edible - and drinkable - try recipe 121 followed by 120!
Cooking is not just for eating.......2000-07-12
I am both a chemist and an amateur chef. I have, on occasion, cooked chinese food for as many as 25 people - which is not bad considering that I am not Chinese! But, of course, the question that always lies at the back of my mind when making something is "why?" as in "why do eggs turn white when fried?" or "why does cornstarch thicken a sauce?". Arthur Grosser's "The Cookbook Decoder or Culinary Alchemy Explained" answers these questions and many more. It is an engaging tour through the chemistry behind cooking by a master chef. It is filled with gentle explanations and interesting experiments. And some absolutely delightful recipes. What more can you want in a book?

Customer Reviews:
Okay, but nothing new here!.......2000-08-06
I'm kind of scratching my head here, wondering if I read the same book as all the five star reviewers. I wanted a bit more of a discussion on risk, I wanted more on how the money he runs has been performing, and a bit more rigor on the decisions as to choose stocks.
However, I did like the opening chapter, and the discussion on convertible bonds for high-tech companies, even though both could have done with a little more "meat" also.
Good for the novice, but anyone with a bit more experience will be frustrated.
No Guide or Strategy here.......2000-04-08
Some explanation about high tech sectors. Then some fundementals used to evaluate companys. This book is a waste of time and money. Dont buy it because of its attractive title.
Mike Murphy is a genius.......2000-01-27
This book makes so much sense. Murphy points out the indicators that our society and economy are undergoing fundamental changes, as significant as the evolution from a hunter-gather society to agricultural; agricultural to industrial; industrial to commercial; and now it's commercial to informational/high-tech. Even if you weren't interested in his investing advice, this book would be worth reading for enjoyment, and to educate yourself about the developments that are going on in our society in technology and biotechnology. But once you read this book, you'll find yourself unable to resist taking Murphy's advice on investing. Who wouldn't want to do just what he says after he tells you the inside scoop (Wall Street is underestimating the potential because they're so far removed from where the action is) that is practically guaranteed to make you a lot of money (just look at the indicators around you!)? After reading it, I subscribed to his newsletter and check his web site daily (www.techinvestingonline.com), and I follow his advice. I've certainly joined the Mike Murphy cult, even though I recognize that his writing is a bit sensationalist...I can't not believe that what he's saying is true.
At last I understand technology.......2000-01-17
I've been working in computer R&D since the late 60's. I was jealous of friends who paid for their Silicon Valley houses using investments in Hi-Tech. The field just seemed too confusing and too volatile. Now it's like the gold rush of 1849 and even crazier. I found Murphy after a search of Amazon.com and what a great book! He explains the industry and it all fit together with what I knew from experience. A subscription to Murphy's California Technology Stock Letter resulted in a 97.9% increase in my portfolio for 1999 with half of it invested in index stocks. Note that none of the Hi-Tech picks were in internet stocks. (Murphy performs detailed fundamental analysis and believes in value. Only recently has he added any internet stocks.) Note that he concentrates on the Western USA since he insists on face to face discussions with the CEO before making a recommendation. Some complain that Murphy doesn't understand biotech - well his biotech picks are hot now. Others say look at his mutual funds - a fair complaint in 1998 but 1999 his technology fund was up 97%. So if you want to understand the Hi-Tech and Bio-Tech industries you have to read Murphy.
The author did very poorly for his own mutual funds!.......1999-11-09
I checked out the book from local library. It looks interesting. I flipped through the book and found out that the author manages two mutual funds: "Murphy New World Biotechnology Fund" (MNWBX) and "Murphy New World Technology Fund"(MNWTX).
I checked the funds performances. They are the bottom of the same fund category since the start of the funds. I returned the book right away.
Are the strategies proven winning strategies? I don't think so. Save your time and money. Otherwise, you'll only get some wrong ideas and even lose tons of money like the author did.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-10-05
This is an excellent book for both deaf and hearing people. As someone who is partly deaf and whose hearing is worsening with the years, the advice in this book was timely and needed both for me and for my family, all of whom hear perfectly. Time and again, I found the author writing just what I had been feeling or experiencing, as if she had been riding on my shoulder the past few years. And boy, can she write! Excellent prose, witty, graceful, and compelling. Some of the references may be out of date now but the wisdom of this book will never be. She addresses not only the practical sides of hearing loss but also the emotional, mental and spiritual sides in a manner that is never intrusive on one's own beliefs but always like listening to a loving and wise friend. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially for anyone in a family in which someone is losing their hearing and thus their life-giving contact with others.
