There are many books out there on negotiating that are quite good and useful on the general topic of effective negotiation, but "Win-Win Negotiations: Proven Strategies for Getting What You Want from Your Employer" is unique in its focus on career negotiation. This is useful for those that need to focus their skills on this area without being distracted by other unrelated issues. This enabled the author to go into detail on this important subject area on negotiating employment by covering such issues as stock options, benefits, relocations, salary reviews, termination of employment, etc.

The author illustrates his arguments, proposals and solutions with practical examples which make the book very useful to the reader. His writing style is easy to follow and understand so that any reader with a basic understanding of English can easily follow.

Among the aspects that I liked about the book include the author's detailed analysis and discussion of a sample employment agreement. He also provides advice on effective negotiation through active listening, communicating effectively and the need for emotional stability.

I loved this book! I found it to be an incredibly useful resource for anyone involved in the employment negotiation process. I was happily surprised by this book. Often I will pick up a book and browse through it in the Business Books section of a store, and chuckle at how simple and useless the advice can be. However, Goodman has some very useful examples and tips. Of course, a lot of it is common sense, but for many people, this book will really get the juices flowing. In fact, a lot of books focus on getting a job, but Goodman has selected a very good segment to focus on: once you get a job, how do you negotiate the best possible compensation? The author gets a great concept across: that everything should be part of the negotiation, and think creatively in doing so. This book will help me when I re-negotiate my present contract, no doubt about it. I also found the case studies with real (and notable people) very effective edification of the principles he espouses.

Finally!.......2002-10-03

Finally a book with useful information on Single Stock Futures! Like many investors, I've been anxiously awaiting the release of the most anticipated futures contract since the e-mini. Unfortunately since this contract will likely change the entire investment arena, industry regulators have delayed it's introduction so apparently they can cross the t's and dot the i's. Fortunately however, this delay has allowed me to prepare myself to trade SSF"S, but until now I haven't had the means. Steven Greenberg may not be an award winning author, but as CEO of one of the largest futures firms, it's apparent that he knows this business inside out. As a seasoned trader of stocks and mutual funds but a novice on futures, I found this book's synopsis of futures especially helpful. Also, Greenberg did a tremendous amount of research (so I didn't have to) and seemed to provide only the information that was unique and most useful. Since this introduction to SSF (I believe it was the first) there have been a few others, but I don't believe them to be as concise or comprehensive. If you're considering Single Stock Futures as a possible investment, I highly recommend this book.

Try Frankel's other Book.......2006-01-13

This is not to say that "Deal Teams" isn't a good book, but that for $8.00 more (currently, in Jan. 2006, that's the delta between the pricing on amazon.com), you should contemplate buying "Mergers and Acquisition Basics" (also by Frankel) instead. Not only does it have more recent statistics in a few chapters, thanks to a later publication date, but it encompasses more relevant and slightly more technical information than this book. In fact I would go as far as to say that the information in this book is merely a subset of "M&A Basics", with less examples, more personal anecdotes (which some readers might find more endearing or perhaps entertaining), far less helpful appendices of examples of relevant documents, etc. For reference purposes, I would definitely recommend "M&A Basics" over this book for the reasons cited above -- this volume does not, for example, even contain a searchable index.

However, note that this is speaking from the perspective of someone with a few years experience in investment banking, and not from a complete outsider to the industry, who may find this introductory book more relevant as it is more about the mental process and less about the technical process of a merger or acquisition.

INVALUABLE RESOURCE.......2004-03-09

"Deal Teams" is a superb book. It contains invaluable information for seasoned M&A professionals and a comprehensive, reader-friendly overview of the business and legal context of M&A transactions. This book will be a best friend to a young lawyer or business person just starting out, or to anyone interested in the dynamics of business transactions. I sat down and read the entire book in one sitting (and this from someone not typically attracted to business-related books). "Deal Teams" stands apart from other books about law and business in that it draws its reader in, both instructing and allowing the reader to savor Mr. Frankel's use of language. I look forward to Mr. Frankel's future publications, which, if they are half as good as this book, will make him a household name in the business and legal worlds.

In this book Frankel presents a clear, understandable look at deal teams and the role of each player. He uses his experience to provide insightful anecdotes and an excellent introduction to strategic transactions and those who make them. A must read for anyone interested in how businesses are bought and sold, anyone seeking to buy or sell a company or a seasoned veteran who wants to brush up on the role of each player. I enjoyed this book and learned a tremendous amount!

Excellent book that Havel himself would probably approve.......2007-06-05

What a lot of ruffled feathers! A book this well-written must have a lot going for it to upset so many people. And, by the way, the most favorable review below, by "Erica Blair," is a piece of legerdemain by a certain author. Readers of the biography should be able to figure it out.
I think readers are upset because the book isn't what they expected. Despite its length, it isn't a standard biography with endless accretion of unnecessary detail. For large sections Havel seems absent from these pages, because Keane concentrates on describing--in vivid, smart prose--what it was like to be Czech at various points in Havel's lifetime. It's almost as if we're experiencing these times through Havel's eyes.
Quite subtly, without appearing to do so, Keane gives us what we need to know about Czech history and politics to understand what made Havel. It's all here, and a graphic and painless read, unlike the more formal histories I've read.
I agree that calling Havel's life a tragedy is a stretch. The only tragedy Keane comes up with is Havel's ultimate rejection as a politician by his fellow Czechs. But Keane himself points out that this tends to happen to all popular politicians later in their terms of office. (See the fate of Blair and Little Georgie Boy.) Havel seems to be thriving, and all the revelations about his boozing, smoking and fornicating seem to make him seem more human and detract not a bit from his reputation. His books of essays will last as long as political writing endures.

Middling.......2005-04-12

I bought this because, without any real data, I had come to think of Havel as a hero. I suppose it was primarily because a creative intellectual in position of political power gives me hope. I felt a need to justify my position, and I believe the book fulfilled that purpose. However, I, too, would have preferred more biography. The treatment of Olga's death was jarring, included as it was in a paragraph about Havel's movie-star girlfriend/wife. Too, the final chapter on death was a bit of a stretch; too full of literary ambition and not enough detail. I had to search for Havel's website to discover that, in fact, he is alive and active.

The section on the Velvet Revolution was particularly engaging, though it seemed that Keane jumped around the timeline a bit much.

Erudite meditation on power, would've like more bio though.........2001-10-24

I was recently in Prague and having read a Havel play (and being a fan of Kundera and Klima) I felt like I needed to know more about the man Havel is. Fortunately I am also interested in the machinations of power structures and how humans spin their webs. This was the main theme of this book, and Havel was it's main character. The chapter about Havel in jail was riveting, but I must say, throughout the book, I would have like more detail regarding the important stories that add dimension to his life, so I would say I should have read something else. Still, Keane's intelligence and insight connect Havel's life with the historical context from which he arises very well. I would say that this it the books greatest strength. I learned a lot, though not always about Havel.

Mr Rossman's review of Vaclav Havel : A Political Tragedy in Six Acts is most misleading and surely based on a careless reading of the book - perhaps even no reading of the book. It should be ignored. The book is very much richer and of long-term significance than he makes out.

Mr. Keane - What planet have you been on?.......2000-09-08

Skip this insulting piece of garbage. I almost couldn't believe what I was reading! At one point Keane seems to imply that Havel's five years as a political prisoner, was nothing more than a planned political move to further his career. Mr. Keane definitely is not a historian, or for that matter, a good writer. What a pity that the book has even received so much publicity. A pure unadulterated insult to one of the greatest figures of our time. Shame on you Keane. Attacking this courageous leader for smoking and drinking habits. I wonder if Keane might have looked for a beer and cigarette after 5 years in a communist prison. Lastly, he criticizes Havel as a writer. Wow, this guy has some really big stones! He writes a piece of junk and in it criticizes one of the most creative and courageous voices of our time. This website only lets you rate from 1 star up, otherwise I would have given it no stars. A waste of time and paper.

good - but there are better anthologies.......2003-09-01

Susan Ware's documentary history of women in the 20th century has some great material, but very little of it is ground-breaking, and much of it is a rather narrow representation of the female experience. There are the ubiquitous documents and accounts of the Progressivism and the sufferage movement, the impact of the Great Depression and World War Two on the home, and the "birth" of feminism in the late 1950's and 1960's, through to material on the sexual revolution of the 80's. Frankly, I was a bit diasppointed.

As a history teacher, I am regularly appalled at the relative lack of attention that women in history are given. If one were to judge by the materials in this book, women have not had much influence in America. Obviliously this is not the case, hence my rating. Furthermore, women of color are not well represented, nor are the experiences of immigrants, rural women, and similar groups. Ware's anthology is primarily comprised of the experiences of white, urban women. A strength of the book are its 3 "photo essays", depicting the obstacles women faced in the workplace, at home, and in education.
