Authors Connie Brown Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley deftly combine solid reporting of facts, figures and poll results with insightful stories about women who have abandoned the corporate rat race. This concise look at a pivotal trend is not limited to women only, though they are its emphasis. The authors introduce high-powered executive women who seek more purpose, balance and fulfillment, and find it by taking less stressful positions, starting their own businesses or switching careers. Much of the story is told through the personal case histories of corporate strivers who decide to chuck it all and go home. Many of these pioneers asked, "What good is all this money when I have no time to enjoy it?" They got tired of being "corporate machines," sick of jeopardizing their health and their important relationships. While many employers now understand that satisfaction, purposefulness and appreciation can trump money, some ground still need to get broken here. I am a professional personnel who dove head first into being a stay at home mom - who misses the professional world, but knows she is in the right place w/kids right now, home - it can be a shocker. If Not Money, What?.......2001-01-05

Glaser and Smalley are among the most influential of current business scholars because they think so clearly and write so well while discussing the most important issues. Perhaps you have already read their Swim with the Dolphins. If not, you are urged to do so. In this book, they focus on an especially timely subject: The importance of "soul" in the equation for "success." In recent years, I have examined the results of more than 30 "employee satisfaction" surveys and was surprised, frankly, by what were rated the highest attributes: feeling appreciated, being treated with respect, believing in the value of the work to be done, enjoying the work to be done, and trusting the organization by which one is employed. What about compensation? Depending upon the individual survey, it was ranked anywhere from ninth to thirteen in importance. For those who participated in the surveys and probably for most other workers, money is never enough and seldom most important. The authors ask all of the right questions but, to their credit, resist the temptation to advocate any ":right answers." That responsibility they entrust to each reader. Although this is another of recently published books which have a gender-specific frame-of-reference, almost everything the authors share can also be of substantial value to men...not only to understand much better their mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, business associates, etc. but, more to the point, to understand themselves much better.

Very good cookbok for Whole Foods.......2006-11-18

I am someone who prefers to cook with whole foods and all natural ingredients. I never want to use pre-mixed items like cream-of-anything soup, salad dressing or taco mixes, so I was happy that all the recipes in this book rely on fresh ingredients. I have a well stocked kitchen (with many spices) so I admit, that has helped with some of the more elaborate dishes. Overall, all the recipes I have tried so far have been flavorful, though in some cases I choose to add additional salt, pepper or other spices, but that is a matter of preference. I think this is a great book with a wide variety of dishes. It is worth a try if you hate store bought mixes and "recipes" that rely on pre-mixed condiments for flavor.

I was not happy with this book. The recipes they provided were not recipes you would use on an everyday basis. In my mind, I was looking for rib, roast, and chile recipes. I found myself just thumbing through the book with no desire to cook anything in there. I believe there are better books out there. Save your money.

I'm sure this book may be helpful for some people, but I was looking for more simple recipes for a very picky eater. Things that had more pasta, ground meat, etc. There are things in some of these recipes that I don't even know what they are or where to get them,and I'm sure my son wouldn't eat. Also some of the prep time was quite long, I want things I can put in there and forget it. If I spend 45 minutes preparing a meal, I shouldn't have to wait 2 or more hours on the slow cooker to finish it.

Love my Crockpot, this book helps me use it!.......2001-10-21

I love my crockpot. I use it all the time. It is so easy to have a complete meal on the table. Cheaper cuts of meat come out tasting great, no hot ovens and stove tops for little fingers to get burned on, easy to use, and good results.

This book is a great resource for Crockpot cooking. The recipes turn out great. Almost everything is easy to make and there are not any unusual or exotic ingredients called for in the meals.

There are a few good crockpot recipe books available that are still in print. This is one that I am glad I have on my shelves.

When I ordered this cookbook I was not expecting what I recieved. I wanted a book that had meals that used mostly what I had on hand. I wanted guidance on how to cook in a crock pot basic meals. I have made a few recipes in this book and they were ok, nothing outstanding. Most of the recipes I would not make. Hope this is helpful.

Great book for Fidelity Select investors.......1998-11-28

Very detailed information on risk level, returns, and how to invest in fidelity select mutual funds.

Finally, something I can use!.......1998-11-26

I have been looking for someway to track the different Fidelity investments and trade on my own. This book and computer program is finally the anwser. I have been using the computer program for 6 months and have finally made money on my own. When the Dow came down so severly in late summer and fall, this system told me what to invest in and not lose like the dow. I am looking forward to trading with this system in the future.

Over-Hyped.......1998-11-12

Despite the advertising, I would say that this book is of little or no use to all but the beginning investor who wants a very easy to manage entry/exit system. I could replicate the "extensive historical research" that these "prominent authors" have performed for their systems in less than a few days and I'm no expert.

There are more pages of text devoted to the history of Fidelity and to an overview and explanation of the Select Funds (the only useful chapter in the book for me) than to the 3 "powerful mutual fund models". The "computer programs" included on disk are nothing more than incredibly simple spreadsheet templates.

I'm not sure if the authors are bull-market opportunists or just naive, but their book was/is a great disappointment to me.

A good introduction to the world of acquisitions. Somewhat refreshingly, it is focused more on the commercial aspects then the finacial and legal aspects which have been written about so much before.

Provides a general overview of issues related to acquisitions; does not get specific enough with regard to marketing due diligence, which is supposed to be a primary focus of this book. Seems to come primarily from an academic perspective. Case studies and deals that are mentioned are mostly from Europe. I wanted something with a little more meat and potatoes.

Where else but in American sports can an old, white, Jewish veteran befriend a young Black Muslim draft dodger? They may not have been friends who loved each other, but it was convenient for both of them. If you can't take advantage of a friend, then he's not. They had things in common. Both were driven. Both had over inflated egos. They were the greatest. If you don't believe it just ask them. Well, Howard Cosell is dead & Ali doesn't talk any more. Their early life & struggles are covered well so that you understand where they came from. Cosell was a World War II vet. He earned a law degree then decided he wanted to do sports on television. He was brash, obnoxious & smart. His relationship with Ali & Monday Night Football made him a nationally recognized sports journalist. Ali, originally Cassuius Clay had a fairly normal upbringing. Then he won Golden Gloves Championship & Olympic gold metal in 1960, that propelled him into his pro career. Before he was finished he had became & is the most recognizable man on earth. He was the world Heavyweight Champion, that most singular of all championships, three times.
Ali was despised for his faith, his refusal to serve in the military & of course his race. Eventually, he overcame all these obstacles. The U.S. government pursued him, denying his draft deferment status. As a result he was also denied the right to box for several of what would have been his most productive years. He lost millions of $$$ & was stripped of his championship. Eventually, he was aquitted. Cosell covered him all along his journey. The author, Dave Kindred spends quite a bit of time on Ali's three fights with Joe Fraizer & rightly so. Ali's life has become an inspiration to kids on all continents but especially the impoverished millions in Africa. He was persecuted by his own government & cheated by the leaders of the Black Muslim faith that managed him. He apparently is now a quiet soul bearing no malice to anyone. Cosell on the other hand became embittered after his MNF gig. He wanted to be taken seriously as more than a sports announcer. When he wasn't he didn't take it well. Poor health eventually claimed him. A good sports book for all us fans of a certain age that remember Cosell & Ali in their prime.

Dave Kindred has done lovers of sports and history a favor with Sound and Fury.

Using two cultural giants - Mohammad Ali and Howard Cosell - he has produced a fresh and readable social history of the latter half of the Twentieth Century. Let me be clear. I love Ali. Kindred refers to him as the most influential sports figure of the last century. In my mind, he understates the case; Ali is the most influential person of the last century.

Cosell, on the other hand, may have hesitated to tell you he was. He was not. Trained as a lawyer and gifted with the ability to articulate complexity, he brought a thinking man's view to radio and television sports journalism.

Individually, they were interesting. Together, they were hypnotizing. They produced controversy, drama and comedy almost every time they appeared together.

Dave Kindred tells the story of this alliance from a unique perspective. As a newspaper and magazine sports columnist with nearly 40 years experience, he covered Ali's early fight days as a reporter for the Louisville Courier-Journal before moving on to the The Atlanta Journal- Courier and The Washington Post. He draws upon his experiences to re-create the Ali-Cosell story in ways I have never seen attempted.

Sport writer Dave Kindred knew both men, he has written a bio that transcends his knowledge of both men. His text is an honest, no hold barred , warts and all biography. When a third person (like Kindred) writes a biography, he tends to put his personal touches with his own bias, this book is NOT that.The book showed an unlikely partnership created by media hype.

In the audio narrative hands of Dick Hill, this audio project seems more like a docudrama in its scope. Hill's narrative voice takes on verbal personas of Cosell and Ali, without mocking them. His talent has grown from the days at Brilliance Audio.

Sound and Fury is an amazing production . . . you won't forget it audio, long after you heard it

The Odd Couple.......2006-06-29

David Kindred has written what amounts to a duel biography of the controversial odd couple that is Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell. The author tells us that Ali elected to not join the military because the Muslim Nation told him not to. To cross them was to literary toy with his life. The assassination of Malcolm X being used as an example. While not necessarily agreeing with Ali's decision Cosell supported Ali stating that taking his heavyweight championship away from him without any semblance of due process was completely wrong. There appears to be evidence that Cosell may have already been experiencing dementia when he came out with his second book entitled I Never Played the Game. Aware of the criticism in his book of his cronies in the TV booth for Monday Night Football Cosell was asked before publication whether he wanted to include these strong opinions. Since he always prided himself on telling it "like it is" he felt it would be hypocrisy of him not to do so now. Cosell was a devoted family man while Ali ventured into nocturnal delights. It was hard for sports fans to be neutral in regard to either of these men, but boxing was the ingredient that brought these two men together first in mutural respect and then in friendship. Incidentally, page 247 has a hilarious anecdote of Howard using his colorful vocabulary in breaking up fisticuffs involving teens in Kansas City. Whether you are a fan of either man or the part they played in sports you will find this to be an extremely enjoyable book to read.

Entertaining account of two seminal cultural figures of the '60's.......2006-06-27

Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali are American icons. One turned sports broadcasting upside down, the other energized and stylized sports in this country. Both displayed extraordinary courage and conviction. Both were one helluva lot of fun.
Ali is one of my heroes and I'll never forget the day I met him and shook his hand. I never had the privilege of meeting the late Mr. Cosell but greatly admired him. Cosell in fact, was the type of personality you could both hold in high regard and poke fun at simultaneously. (That voice! That somehow lovable pretense!)
Growing up in the '60's as I did, in Berkeley no less, Ali and Cosell provided diversion from the weighty issues of the day. Ali, the flamboyant and brilliant boxer, Cosell the outspoken trailblazing sports broadcaster and commentator. Yet both, like so much in that tumultuous decade stood for something. Ali risked jail by standing up to the draft and was unjustly stripped of his livelihood. He'd already embraced Islam and stood for a new kind of black athlete who, as we said back then, "did his own thing." Cosell tackled such issues as the injustices visited upon Ali and others, championing the causes of the oppressed. It would not be an overstatement to say that Cosell was the Edward R. Murrow of sports.
In "Sound and Fury", sportswriter Dave Kindred tells the tale of these two who played such key roles in one another's lives. Many sportswriters, even ones who write books, are, quite frankly hacks, but others are practiced wordsmiths who know how to tell story with economy and grace. Fortunately, Kindred is most solidly in the second camp.
In "Sound and Fury" Kindred has the huge advantage of having been around both his subjects at the very times they were making news. He brings this personal perspective along with a thoroughly done research job to fully illuminate the story.
Much of what Kindred tells of Ali is familiar to those of us who followed his career, yet he manages to bring new material and offers some of the old from a new perspective. What I particularly enjoyed was some of the back story about Cosell, being unfamiliar with almost all of it. We follow Ali from his boyhood days in Louisville, through his boxing career, political stands, return to boxing glory and his failed attempts to thwart father time. We start with Cosell in his Brooklyn childhood, early love of sports, law career coincident with his determination (despite that nasal New York Jewish twang) to break into broadcasting. Next are his big breaks including Monday Night Football. And of course, we see where the twain met. Beautifully playing off one another in one of the best unscripted shows in TV history.
For anyone interested in either Ali, Cosell or both (and if you like one you probably at least appreciate the other) "Sound and Fury" is an absolute must.

It's a great title for this book, "Two Lives One Legacy." And this is a beautiful story on the lives of the two brothers. It was not easy for me to find a book on their lives...and when I learned of this book, it was not easy to get a hold of it...

Most remember Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm for the stories they published, and sometimes myth intrudes even with this. But they lived great and wonderful lives, and this book tells all.

From childhood, this book covers their lives in an easy read. It offers a whole new light on the lives and times of, 'The Brother's Grimm."

There is not a movie on the, "true" story of the two brother's, I hope one will be made soon.

Ably translated into English by Frederick Hammond, "Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti: Two Lives In One" is an inherently fascinating and impressively informative biography of Alessandro Scarlatti, one of the most celebrated and least performed composers of the Baroque, and his son Domenico. Biographer Roberto Pagano examines their lives within the context of seventeenth-century Sicilian culture and in doing so, draws upon new documentation concerning their lives and careers. A masterpiece of original bibliographic scholarship, there is clear distinction between authenticated sources and Pagano's own insightful speculation. "Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti" is a seminal work and enthusiastically recommended for academic library European Music History and Biography collections.

I read this book once a year.......2006-01-21

Keep in mind, that I am a complete Russophile. I studied Russian for two years, spent months in Russia in the 90s. So this book touches me in ways that are personal. I read this book every few years, and I'm starting to think my original copy is wearing thin.

This book is divided into two storylines that weave a united theme. The first part is an a account of the author's own detention and interrogation under the time of Gorbachev leadership. Nicholas Daniloff was the Soviet reporter for US News & World Report in the 1980's. He was one day grabbed of the street and what follows is an account with as much intrigue as a Robert Ludlum novel. It hits hard, those who lived during the Cold War of the 80's.

The second story line is that of the author's investigating and eventually unraveling of the story of his Great-great-great grandfather who was a minor member in the Decembrist revolt in 1825. Daniloff's investigation of the history of his ancestor shows the warm nature of Russians and the power of History that survived through communist Russia. When Daniloff, tells the account of his Great-great-great grandfather, it brings up images of Tolstoy.

All in all, this book brings an amazing account of the Russian people in two periods of oppression. The warm nature of Russians has always been from within, and this book shows that.

Give this book a try, if you love great non-fiction stories, this one should be at the top of your list.

Note: I contacted Nicholas Daniloff via email a few years ago, to tell him how much I loved this book. He actually replied and took to heart the fact that his and his ancestor's story meant so much to someone.
