Book Description
Now in paperback comes the complete guide to Chinese cooking based on Martin Yan's popular PBS show. This encyclopedic book features Martin Yan's trademark clear and detailed guidance on Chinese cooking techniques, implements, ingredients - and of course, recipes. Using a warm, witty approach, Yan makes the mysterious accessible for novice or experienced cooks not familiar with the complexities of this cuisine. Color photographs enhance the 350 recipes which include both typical restaurant choices and homemade favorites, from Drunken Crab with Ginger-Wine Sauce and Mu Shu Vegetables, to Sunshine Soup with Dumplings, Sweet Bean Paste Puff, and Steamed Coconut-Papaya Sponge Cake.
Customer Reviews:
I know Martin Yan and Martin says..........2006-06-18
this is his best book.
I am a pro cook, and have met and talked to Martin on several occasions at professional conferences. He says this is his best cookbook. I have used it, as well as a couple of other of his cookbooks. I agree, it's his best.
Besides, who am I to argue with Martin!
Excellent recipes for Asian-American food.......2004-08-02
In response to previous reviewers, this is not authentic Chinese food that Yan is making. That said, in reading this book I never got the impression from Yan that it was.
Yan includes recipes for many favorites that you would find in Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and other asian restaurants in the US. These are very good. I'm not buying General Tso's chicken or Sweet and Sour chicken again in a restaurant because these recipes were so much better and easy to make (it's amazing what lychees and chili-garlic sauce add to sweet and sour chicken). There are also cute anecdotes and nice pictures for almost every dish.
If you are interested in more authentic Chinese cooking, I've found that "Chinese Cooking Made Easy: With Simple Sauces and Dressings (Wei-chuan°s cookbook)" is indispensible and I use it all the time. If you want a good cookbook for restaurant style asian food, try Martin Yan's Feast.
I haven't tried his recipes for Thai food, as I'm half-Thai and probably I wouldn't like them (too americanized), but Wei-chuan's Thai Cooking Made Easy is also really good and I've used it quite a bit.
I am so sad that people think this is Chinese food!.......2004-04-11
I just watched yet another Martin Yan show on TV. Being a Chinese who has lived in the U.S. for 10 years, I am ever so saddened by the fact that people really think this guy is cooking the "real" stuff. My friends and I just think that he puts on a good show. If you enjoy his food, please do not get the wrong impression that it is Chinese. He has substantially modified many of the dishes to fit American taste, just as many western restaurants in the Orient would make western food which have been changed to fit the Asian taste buds. I have seen westerners making faces in western restaurants in the Orient exclaiming, is this what you called a hamburger? (you can substitute "hamburger with the name of any other dishes) The reaction of Chinese towards Yan's cooking is the same!
excellent presentation, recipes packed,.......2004-02-25
This book is very well presented with a nice matte finish. The book is good if you are looking for easy home made dishes that are not too fancy. The ingredients asked for are not too demanding, easy to obtain, a plus if you don't live close to Chinatown.
I would recommend this book because it's packed with recipes with pictures accompanying some of them. Variety also give this book a boost on the shopping list.
I gave this book 4 stars because I was looking for recipes that are regionally famous throughout China, Most of the dishes are more of a homestyle dinner rather than restaurant gourment.
One word. YUM........2003-07-13
Martin Yan's Feast combines the wonderful taste of Asian cuisine with easy steps that even a 12 year-old can understand. One of my favorites is the Ma Po Tofu. Enjoy!

What's with the format of this book?.......2004-02-13
I ordered this book as a Valentines present for myself, also to get in touch with my Korean side. (I'm half Korean) None of the recipes seemed at all familiar to the ones my mother made except the Barley tea. The format is confusing to me also. Everything is done per celebration versus chapters of entrees. I do appreciate some of the history and explanation of customs, but not enough to recommend this book to anyone.
Customer Reviews:
it's like a miniature coffee table cookbook.......2004-08-09
For a book that's only about 7" square this one is full of China. There are great pictures of food and some excellent recipes (because after all it is a recipe book spearheaded by an editor for Gourmet magazine) yet I was also delighted at some of the candid shots: Guilin, stone sculptures in Dazu, a junk on the Yangtze -- beautiful images. I made a few of the recipes, the Lemon Chicken and the Chili Beef both come to mind. Both had excellent flavor and visual appeal, plus I didn't have to trudge to the Pacific Rim to find any bizarre spices. A lovely book overall but only 4 stars for two reasons: (1) the recipes contain no breakdown of calories/sugars/sodium etc. which may have been standard in 1992 when it was copyrighted but a must-have for me today and (2) it is small yet perfect bound -- which is wonderful for a coffee table book but not so great to try and use as a cookbook as the type is small and the book doesn't lie flat. P.S. Hope someone can shimmy up a screen shot of the vibrant cover for a stock photo -- lovely blues with a plate of chili beef that made me pick it up in the first place.

The Best.......2003-08-24
I purchased this cookbook for my son and his new wife who is from China and though this may sound strange to have purchased a book like this for someone from China, they loved it and have cooked many dishes. After looking at it, I purchased it for myself and have made about 7 of the recipies. I love the Lemon Chicken Stirfry, 3 Seafood Stirfry and the Fried Rice and Vegetables. It is easy to follow and I have not had a problem finding any items I need. This has become one of my favorite cookbooks.
Good basic Asian cookbook primer........2001-01-18
I was recently given this book and I find that it is a good book to get started in Asian cooking with. Having cooked some form of Asian food for years now, I like the availability of the smattering of different cuisines it covers, and have found some recipes I had never seen before, like Tapioca and Taro Pudding (my current favorite comfort food). I am not sure about how true it is to the various Asian cuisines it encompasses, and those who consider themselves self-appointed experts in Asian cuisine might turn their noses up at some of its recipes (the recipe for Potato, Broccoli, and Red Bell Pepper Stir-fry comes to mind), but for those who are new to this realm of cooking it might be a good book to start with. Many recipes seem to have been developed for those who have little access to a decent Asian market, and that is certainly helpful to the beginner. Only a few recipes call for ingredients that may be harder to find at a standard non-Asian market, but Ms. Wu offers substitutes. A bonus is that the book is filled with color photos: there are big photos of every recipe, helpful (though a bit small) photos of the ingredients, and step-by-step photos of the techniques used for each recipe. My only disappointment is that Ms. Wu did not indicate the country of origin for most of the recipes, nor the correct name associated with them. For instance, in looking for a recipe for a basic Vietnamese pho soup, I had to search the soup section page-by-page to find it under the name: Hanoi Beef and Noodle Soup. However, once I found the recipe and tried it, I was not disappointed; it was delicious.
Great Set of Basic Recipes.......2000-01-03
This book is a great example of a useful asian recipe collection. The best aspect of the book is the fact that all of the recipes are well illustrated. Not only is the food itself illustrated, but all the preparation steps are also illustrated making the cooking process very easy. A large number of diverse recipes are included that provide a nice sample of asian cusine. The only disappointment I found was that each recipe stands alone. The recipes are grouped according to type (soups, meat and poultry, etc), but we aren't given any background for any of the dishes; for some we don't even know what country they come from. Still the recipes are all interesting, and easy to make. If all you need is a set of great ideas for asian meals, you'll find this book invaluable. If you're looking for the cultural background for dishes, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
pay attention to the bad reviews.......2005-12-20
I don't usually write reviews but I have to do my part to ensure this book recieves the rating it deserves. See review below that guy is on to something the current rating is a scam. There is almost nothing of value in this book you could probably write a better trading book yourself after reading about ten of them. All the information is very general and could be found most anywhere but in much greater depth. I also question whether the authors know basic mathematics - "%D = 2/3pv%D + 1/3%D" and "High and low bands are also parallel lines plotted above and below the moving average lines." Nice. This book was a complete waste of my day thank god I did not pay for it. Enough said.
Very little trading information..........2002-03-04
I was disappointed in this book, as it contains very little information that is applicable to trading strategies. The only information in this category is very general and would be found in virtually any trading book. Primarily, this book seems to be one big advertisement for the futures industry. A large section of the book is devoted to the history of online trading and the companies who shaped it as well as interviews with principals of these firms.
If you are a new trader, you may find something useful here. If, however, you are a seasoned trader, there is virtually nothing in this book that you will find helpful.
The Art of Electronic Futures Trading.......2001-12-07
Starting with the history, and ending with the future the authors (who are the originators of electronic futures trading)leave no stone unturned. This book is a must for all serious futures traders whether a novice or a seasoned professional.
Just curious.......2001-09-11
OK, I didn't read this book, although I did plan to buy it until I found something curious. This book was published in Nov. 2000, and all 10 reviews before me were posted in Dec. and Jan. 2001? With the first 5 of 7 claimed to be from IL? Go figure.
Know yourself before you trade.......2001-01-24
Finally a book that prepares you mentally as well as technically before you begin to trade. I like the way that the book gave you a test on what type of personality traits you have and then recommended two specific categories subjective and objective. Once into one of these categories I felt comfortable in what Kaiser and Green were saying on how to develop a system that is right for my personality. I have actually tested and traded the system that I developed with the books help. Not only did the system test out well, but when I started trading it, it traded exactly as tested. Thank you, Thank you Kaiser and Green

From the supplier: Employee benefits consulting firms will undergo a period of consolidation as smaller firms will find it harder to compete due to a dearth of capital needed to meet new technological demands. Consolidation will enable employee benefits consulting firms to spread the costs of new technology acquisitions across several firms. Consolidation also will be spurred by increased competition in the employee benefits consulting market from accounting firms and banks.

Book Description
Thailand’s Bhumibol Adulyadej, the only king ever born in the United States, came to the throne of his country in 1946 and is now the world’s longest-serving monarch. The King Never Smiles, the first independent biography of Thailand's monarch, tells the unexpected story of Bhumibol's life and sixty-year rule—how a Western-raised boy came to be seen by his people as a living Buddha, and how a king widely seen as beneficent and apolitical could in fact be so deeply political and autocratic.
Paul Handley provides an extensively researched, factual account of the king’s youth and personal development, ascent to the throne, skillful political maneuverings, and attempt to shape Thailand as a Buddhist kingdom. Handley takes full note of Bhumibol's achievements in art, in sports and jazz, and he credits the king's lifelong dedication to rural development and the livelihoods of his poorest subjects. But, looking beyond the widely accepted image of the king as egalitarian and virtuous, Handley portrays an anti-democratic monarch who, together with allies in big business and the corrupt Thai military, has protected a centuries-old, barely modified feudal dynasty.
When at nineteen Bhumibol assumed the throne, the Thai monarchy had been stripped of power and prestige. Over the ensuing decades, Bhumibol became the paramount political actor in the kingdom, silencing critics while winning the hearts and minds of his people. The book details this process and depicts Thailand’s unique constitutional monarch—his life, his thinking, and his ruling philosophy.
Customer Reviews:
Accurate and dispassionate.......2007-09-23
This book is scholarly and engaging; I have to believe that Handley was barred from entering the Kingdom as persona non-grata after publishing it. I gave it 4 stars only because it takes a lot of coffee to get through the minutia. But without that level of detail, the author would be at risk of being ridiculed for trying to do a hatchet job on Thailand's Royal Family. The reality is, the King is a product of his time, working in a country beset by ignorance and self-serving "influential families." Most Thais would be horrified to read this book, and will probably reject it out of hand. But their school system and indoctrination will never allow them to read this dispassionately. Having lived in Thailand, I understand why Thai's who have reviewed this book are horrified by it, but as a Westerner, I just view it as a solid piece of historical inquiry. I enjoy life in the Kingdom and the unique Thai conviviality and sense of fun; this book just gives me a better perspective on the reasons for Thailand being the way it is today.
Why write this book?.......2007-09-10
When I first saw this book on the shelf, I had to go borrow money from my wife to buy it. I was immediately transfixed on this book and saw in it the makings of a well-written, and well-needed epoxy for the fragments of knowledge of the Thai King possessed by the average Westerner. That being said (and after reading the book in its' entirety), I can't help but question the motives behind the tenor set for this work.
Though I agree that our common knowledge of the Thai Monarchy here in the West is sketchy at best, I take serious issue to the need for the author to "intimate" his so-called "revelations" regarding the falability and the humanity of the Thai King (both as a person and as an institution). If one looks at the total sum of King Rama IX's body of works with respect to the general Thai populace (even taken into account a probable healthy dose of dramatic inflation on the part of loyalists), there seems to arise no justification for this "attack of truth" that could have no other motive than to either try to damage the integrity of the Thai Monarchy, or (even less palatable) simply serve as a vehicle on which the author seeks some measure of notoriety and monetary benefit.
There is a curious and institution-damaging notion in the West (one which the traveller possessing a modest degree of knowledge of non-Wester cultures will instantly spot as a weakness) that the general populace in a given society would be better served to be in the possession of "the whole truth and nothing but the truth" (as the saying goes) in all matters of personal, private, and even governmental matters. Somehow the state of transparency of all interactions has become (in many minds) a God-given right, a commodity that is owed to the general public. This curiously western view does not hold to all cultures, and (in my humble opinion) is one of the reasons I think Western Civilization will soon (historically speaking) see its demise.
The general Thai person neither perceives the need or the desire for such information regarding governmental and Monarchical matters. This is one of the strengths of the Thai (and indeed South, and South-east Asian country's) cultures, and here one must not make the common mistake of equating a strong culture with a prosperous one. They don't spend the majority of their time trying to understand whether or not their leaders are justified in their actions, and I believe they are a much stronger society for it.
That being said, there is some good historical and Monarchical information in this book as long as the reader is willing to wind their way through the mine-field of "attack the ideal of the Thai Monarchy" droppings that polute the literary grounds of this book.

Bought this as a present for someone and had it sent to them. Not sure why I'm being asked to review it.
Long Live The King.
Biased, but should be read by the Thais still..........2007-07-02
This is a good and comprehensive read for all Thais. If you grew up learning the history from the Ministry of Education's standardized textbooks without much chance of reading about Thai history anywhere else, this is a must, especially in this time when the same episode of military coup repeated itself again last year (and is still going on). Ajarn Pasuk's history book is also a comprehensive one, although it does not dwell into the subject of royalists' interests and influences, which is the main interest of this book. Overall, the book did a fine job in reviewing the modern history of Thailand from the royalists' perspective. However, the chapters on family affairs are too much like those Brit tabloid columns on the royal family.
I am not saying, however, that the writer has convinced me entirely on the thesis of the book--the idea of Dhammaraja king--which is repeated way too many times, as if the readers are dumb and do not remember what the author wants to convey. For me Dhammaraja itself represents one fine concept for a leader. The king's adherence to those principles are not the problems per se. The way the king has become such a revered figure must be credited to the palace's marketing scheme. People have been amazed at Thaksin's new way of political marketing. They forgot the powerful marketing from the palace completely. The palace's marketing channels are so ingrained in the society that people hardly think about it anymore. It's all about presentation, afterall.
I also agree with many other reviewers that the author does not need to be so disrespectful of the king. Afterall, he is the King of Thailand, and should be referred to as King Bhumibol, and not just Bhumibol (same for Queen Sirikit and others in the book). These choices the author made convey much of his bias. There are also many shaky references and vague guesses that have weak evidence. Many names of famous figures are incorrectly spelled, and sometimes the author seems to forget part of their names. These little details make it rather annoying and also make the story less credible.
tke king never smile.......2007-06-08
this is a good book to lean the truth story what was going on the event that happen in Thailand. After I hac read the book I know Iwas brain washed by government and the royal people. It opened my eyes and my heart to see the reality the politic action of the government and the monarchy.I think all Thai people or/and people who are interesting in Thailand should read the book.

Book Description
The entire world was waiting for me to die. What chance had I? Louise Lawrence believed she had finally found happiness and stability after a turbulent early life, only to be struck down by a rare illness that not only baffled the medical profession, but was destined to define the very course of her adult life. When no one expects you to survive, the determination to rise above life's challenges and to prove everyone wrong can become all-consuming. Through the traumas thrown up by broken marriages, the unknown whereabouts of loved ones and physical suffering, 'Above the Chimney Pots' is an inspiring true-life account of one woman's remarkably rich life - a life that demonstrates the complexity of human existence: grief, ambition, success, love and, above all, hope.
