Book Description
Hand-wringing doesn't solve Y2K!
P. J. Wylie writes about Y2K with a sense of joy and a sense of humor -- both of which are needed now that the End-Game of Y2K is upon us! Ms. Wylie sets up three scenarios for Y2K:
Do nothing. You snooze. You lose. End of story.
"Due diligence." Prepare yourself and your company. Your business survives, but what about the rest of your town?
DO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! Set up CityPlan 2000, a clearinghouse of information for your community. For individuals: information on Personal Preparedness, the status of Y2K in the US and in the world, questions to ask your utility companies. For small businesses: "How to select a consultant," "Due Diligence," and "Contingency Planning."
Small and medium-sized businesses compose HALF of our domestic economy! And since half of these businesses have still done nothing about Y2K, that means that 25% of our economy is AT RISK due to these unprepared businesses in the midst of our own towns!
Convert these businesses from being a millstone around your town's neck into being part of the life raft floating the whole town safely over the floodwaters of Y2K.
Save your job! Hand this book to your boss.
Save your business! Use the checklists to find a consultant and to make sure the consultant is doing the right thing. Plan and test the contingency plans you need.
Save the 25% of your town currently at risk! Use CityPlan 2000 to set up clearinghouses of information for all your town's small businesses. Learn how to set up a bulletin board of community needs for all the town's residents. Find out how to get corporate funding, how to involve the schools, how to link government and private needs.
All the information is here for you to be a hero to your family, your business, and your community. You are the missing ingredient to get this started. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A "TECHIE" TO SAVE YOUR TOWN! Start now to have the proper lead time to get everything finished on time!
Celebrate New Year's with joy instead of apprehension! Power Your Way through Y2K!

Even your mother in-law can understand Y2K.......1999-12-25
My mother in-law was over at my house and we started talking about Y2K. See asked me to explain how this will affect her.
The problem I've always had is trying to explain to a non-technical person what it really is.
This book explains in simple terms what Y2K is all about and how to prepare for it.
I have also fond myself quoting from this book to my co-workers.
Complete & succinct discussion of Y2K and solutions.......1999-10-18
Pam Wylie has written an excellent book on Y2K. It discusses what the problem is, how wide the impacts might, and how to deal with it. The orientation is the average citizen, small business person and community organizer. She knows that Y2K can be dealt with, and her goal is help them get the problem solved. Pam is not one of the doom-and-gloomers that are so prevalent these days. Pam deals with the technical details of Y2K in a straight-forward, easy-to-understand manner.
This book is a must-read for small businesses and community organizers.
Time is really short, folks. Get your copy, and get crackin!!
Extremely valuable!.......1999-10-09
This is a great book! I found the section on CROW (Century Roll-Over Weekend) extremely valuable and concise. I have referred to this book many times on the job and at home. I have shared it with a community leader and would recommend it to anyone interested in practical advise for stepping into the Year 2000.

Customer Reviews:
Deep insight, practically based on my own life experiences.......2002-04-24
As an American who has worked two years in Japan and four years in the US for Japanese automotive startups (and married to a beautiful Japanese woman for six years), I was able to relate to this book on a level that a majority of readers cannot comprehend. I was fortunate to have a Japanese President who took me under his wing early in my career and taught me the lessons of "ho-ren-so" and the like. However, working for the Japanese is a challenge still. As an American, reading through the first few chapters of Mr. Honda's book, I found myself becoming somewhat angry at the accusations and arrogance of the Japanese thinking being explained. After stepping back I realized the author was just providing information to help better explain ideas presented in later chapters and his overall point. This book is not so much "Americans are bad or lazy" and "Japanese are superior," it is more or less food for thought. Japanese or American, working with people requires understanding of one another. Often, the most difficult aspect is getting both sides to acknowledge and accept the good points of one another and adopt them to create true synergy. As for the coward from Pottstown, PA, who doesn't even have the courage to give an e-mail address. He totally misunderstood this book (that is if he read it at all). If Americans are so lazy, then why does the world economy depend so heavily on us? Why do Japanese companies continue to invest billions in new US ventures every year? If it were not for us lazy Americans, ignorant fools such as this coward from Pottstown, PA would not have world dominating companies such as Boeing to work for. One more point for the Japanese to understand. A reporter once asked a former football coach of Notre Dame, "Coach, how do you motivate your players?" The coach responded, "I don't motivate them. They come motivated. I try not to de-motivate them." As pointed out in Mr. Honda's book, Americans enter into Japanese companies with childish optimism and enthusiasm. All to quickly is that enthusiasm shattered and the American becomes just another body punching the clock or "lazy". Until Japanese executives (and many American companies) understand this and learn how to harness this energy, they will never understand the true work ethic of the American worker. If going home to spend time with your wife, children, community volunteer organization, church, or night school at the end of an eight hour workday instead of sitting at your desk looking busy but you really don't have anything to do or as the Japanese at two companies I have worked for, sitting in the smoking area for hours at the end of the day just to get face time, if not wasting my precious time like this is considered lazy, then I am guilty. Ask any Japanese Executive on his deathbed if he has any regrets in life. I do not believe his answer would be, "I wish I had spent more time at work." Thank you Mr. Honda.
More books like this.......2000-04-17
It's good to have books of this sort. It's about time someone instill some sort of work ethic in the Americans. Americans are often dismissed as lazy and unambitious, self-centered, which is not far from the truth. I know, I used to work for Boeing Company in America. This should be required reading for people in American auto industry so they make better car,LOL!
Must reading for American managers in Japanese companies!.......1999-04-23
Mr. Honda takes the mystery out for American managers who want to know what to say and do in order to be successful in Japanese companies. He provides numerous examples and comparisons between the American and Japanese styles of management along with recommendations. A special emphasis on diversity-communications is provided from cover to cover to guide the reader on the perceptions and expectations American and Japanese managers have of each other, and how to improve their working relationship. In summary, Mr. Honda's book is long overdue for American managers who are looking for practical tips and guidelines to have a successful career in Japanese companies.
Practical guide for Americans to work for Japanese companies.......1998-10-02
Having managed a Japanese invested company in the USA for 8 years, I was exposed to the strengths and weaknesses of the philosophy of operation, style and processes. It caused me to rethink the validity of the mostly unspoken and unexplained management approaches that cause much frustrations and inefficiencies to American workers. Back in the introductory period of American Karate in 1962, I learned, as an instructor, to explain the reasons behind Karate practice and thought processes, rather than leaving the art vague and mysterious. Americans would do well when all the chips and stones are turned and have clear objectives and rewards for the effort. I decided to write, perhaps for the first time by a Japanese executive, a plainly explained managment book on the system of Japanese companies in the USA. No theories but all practical questions and experiences Americans will be exposed in working for or with Japanese companies. Answers to the questons and different experiences are clearly written to assist Americans to succeed in managing a Japanese company which has been expected but being realized so slowly. EVERYTHING IS EXPLAINABLE AND CAN BE LEARNT!

Amazing book.......2007-04-28
I just made the Rogan Josh for dinner tonight. It was outstanding. Amazing authentic tasting Indian food that is almost laughably easy to make. When I remember my Indian friends working for hours on what now takes 45 minutes, well, lets just say, these days we are eating a lot more Indian food. The caramelized rice pudding (Banrasi Kheer) is to die for. Remember that to make this the old fashioned way you had to cook it hours just below boiling to be careful not to burn the milk. Not so in a microwave! You just zap it for about 30 minutes (yes that is an insane length of time for microwave, but you need to just trust her).
The only problem is that a lot of the recipies will boil over, so plan on setting aside some time to clean up the microwave.
A must-have cookbook for anyone who like Indian food.......2005-03-18
I received this cookbook as a gift from a friend who had served me several delicious meals from it. I had the book probably two years before I was brave enough to try using it but once I did haven't stopped. The recipes are well written, easy to follow, and delicious; they keep, store and reheat well. Julie Sahni really demystifies the spices, ingredients and cooking methods. My copy of this book is falling apart, I've used it so much. I can't praise this book highly enough.
Sahni's microwave magic creates real Indian food.......1998-10-07
Don't disdain this marvelous book. Julie Sahni teaches you how to cook Indian food in the microwave, with flair and flavor. In the process, you learn things about microwave cooking you never knew. The microwave really can make "real" food, and Julie Sahni shows you how. The recipes need the quantity of spices increased in some cases, but this book is an endless delight and resource. Wonderful for summer months when you crave the flavor of that luscious curry but want to beat the heat in the kitchen, or just for any time when speed and ease seem the way to go! I love this book. I own over 30 Indian cookbooks, but I return to this often.
These microwave recipes really do save time and taste great!.......1998-04-30
I tried several of her recipes after watching Ms. Sahni on the Frugal Gourmet a few years ago.
The dishes I prepared were a hit with family and friends. I would especially recommend making the Indian sweets using her microwave methods. The results were quick and delicious!
"Moghul Microwave" is a wonderful book..........1998-01-13
This is the first time I've ever read a cook-book that actually gives you real step-by-step recipies that work really well. The directions are obvious, even for a initiate like myself, and at least 95% of the ingredients are the off-the-shelf variety. I also love the way Julie Sahni "narrates" her recipies, giving me just enough outside information to add some depth to the dish, and yet not so much as to detract from the recipies themselves. What else can I say except that my copy is used almost every weekend, and it's already dog-eared and well worn. I just hope she comes out with a follow-on at some point...

Book Description
Around the world, organizations of all kinds are merging at a frenetic pace. In a comparative study of two Canadian higher education mergers - that of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education with the University of Toronto in 1996, and that of the Technical University of Nova Scotia with Dalhousie University in 1997 - Julia Eastman and Daniel Lang examine why and how universities merge and why some mergers succeed while others fail.
Drawing on extensive interviews with university members, public officials, and experts in organizational restructuring, and on their professional involvement in the two mergers, the authors elucidate what prompts higher education mergers, what is involved in the process and what determines the outcomes. They link practice with organizational theory and offer observations about the roles of history, economics, power and human relations in post-secondary educational systems. Suitable for university and college officials, educators, social scientists, and public policy-makers, the style and approach of Mergers in Higher Education make it an indispensable resource for all those involved in planning and negotiating university and other public sector mergers, both in Canada and abroad.

Excellent Resource.......2005-01-29
I found Dr. Skacel's book to be very enlightening to the dynamics of communications in the workplace.... and quite humourous as well. I highly recommend this book.
Mulligan delivers what the workplace needs!.......2004-06-26
I loved this book! Dr Skacel delivers very practical and helpful ideas to improve communications in a cleaver and humorous way. This is a fast paced read that allows you to learn and enjoy the process. Mulligan is worth tailing for workplace communication improvement!
A Great Tool To Enhance Your Communication Skills........2004-06-23
This book captures the essence of good communication skills in an enjoyable, quick read. The concepts outlined should be used in all communication, regardless of the context.
I keep it handy for quick reference.
Great Read for CEO's & Employees Alike.......2004-06-19
Tailing Mulligan is a well-written, unique work. Skacel has created a brief and unintimidating aid for anyone, from employee to CEO, in a business setting. Because it is concise and written as a story, it is more likely to be read than any other dry textbook manual. Skacel's use of symbolic creatures conjures up images of people the reader has known or is currently encountering in the work place. The characters' experiences and lessons learned are easily remembered and applied.
A Must-Read for Organization Team Builders, and Players.......2004-04-28
Tailing Mulligan provides simple solutions to the big communication issues that challenge so many organizations. But what's really special about this book is the way that it is clearly written to engage and entertain the reader. For an organizational development book, Tailing Mulligan is more witty and humorous than any of the other few dozen books we've used to build a team culture in our businesss. Each communication approach detailed in Tailing Mulligan is cleverly linked to reinforce and build upon prior concepts. Plus, because this book is so easy and funny to read, it can be used as a training or team building tool for every member of virtually any organization. I've always admired authors, like Mulligan's Rob Skacel, who can make difficult concepts easy to understand and provide simple, easy-to-apply solutions. The way this book keeps you laughing is a bonus that keeps you leashed all the way to the end. Masterfully written. After finishing Tailing Mulligan, I immediately ordered copies for all of our team leaders!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction minimizing brute force.......2003-08-03
Of the many textbooks on business Japanese, this is pedogically the best for people who already know a good deal of Japanese grammar and know quite a few kanji (say a thousand or so), but need to to develop a vocabulary for reading newspapers, books, magazine articles, etc. related to business.
Unlike the earlier book, "Reading Financial Newspapers" this book introduced kanji in groups of 20 or so per chapter and gives systematic practice reading them before moving on to the next chapter--i.e. it is not in the "random brute force" school of teaching Japanese that is still all too prevalent.
The readings get progressively harder grammatically as well and are quite demanding by the end--leaving you able quite able to tackle books and professional articles by the end.
I review it frequently to "tighten up" my own knowledge and need (and want) to buy a new one because I have used it so much over the last few years. Ideally, it should have a more solid, flexible binding--like a dictionary!

Book Description
Responsible Growth for the New Millennium contends that economic growth is essential for development, but that it is not enough. It presents a vision of a responsible approach to growth - sustainable growth in consumption, healthfulness, human capital, environmental quality and social equity - that can achieve a far more equitable world in 2050.
Conceiving the sheer scale of the world economy in 2050 (as much as four times the current economy) this book raises stark questions: How resource and pollution-intensive will this economy be, particularly in the developing world? How will critical resources, such as biodiversity, be shielded from development pressures? How will we deal with impending water scarcity? Achieving responsible growth will require concerted efforts in establishing a more balanced relationship between rich and poor countries, opening up trade, fostering agricultural productivity, delivering water and energy, managing the environment and natural resources, building health and human capital, and attaining social equity and inclusion.
Three issues stand out: (i) dealing with near-term poverty and inequality; (ii) improving governance and capacity in developing countries; and (iii) the need to invest in technological public goods, particularly agricultural technologies for the tropics and treatments for infectious diseases. The alternative will be a world characterized by uncertainty, social unrest and environmental degradation.

Book Description
Lost for almost half a century and never before published, When Montana and I Were Young is a remarkable primary account of a child’s life in the early part of the twentieth century. Margaret Bell (1888–1982) was a rancher and horse breaker whose memoir tells the story of a frontier childhood on the high plains of Montana and Canada. Hers was not a typical childhood. Bell was barely seven when her mother died, and her stepfather, Hedge Wolfe, moved Bell and her three younger half-sisters far from their nurturing grandmother to the Canadian plains and a life of extreme poverty, hardship, and abuse.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable book.......2002-08-04
This is a remarkable book. It is a primary account of a child's life growing up in Montana and Canada in the early part of the twentieth century. Margaret (Peggy) Bell's life spanned some 94 years, from 1888-1982, and her story is as exciting and troubling as any account one is likely to read, fiction or non-fiction. That the book is edited by Mary Clearman Blew makes it not only highly readable but lends it undeniable credibility.
Bell's account of growing up on the high plains of Montana and Canada is a rare, first person account of life on the frontier with it's numerous hardships, grinding poverty, and ultimate struggle to retain her mind and spirit that will break your heart and make you shout for joy...sometimes within a few paragraphs or pages. In a straight forward, honest, almost stoic manner she describes the many life lessons she learned and discusses a subject that is rarely seen in print in the literature of the period: the abuse, sexual and otherwise, she experienced at the hands of her uncle and stepfather. This is an amazing book that chronicles the life experiences of a resilient woman in a man's world that lived to understand who she was, where she came from, and what it all meant. That she could tell such a story without self pity or sentimental, touchy-feely themes is remarkable. Brutally frank, honest and ultimately uplifting.
