Book Description
This book will be a valuable resource to practicing paralegals for whom is it critical to have a sound working knowledge of intellectual law. The many practical forms, agreements, checklists, case summaries, and charts illustrate the principals presented, promoting a clear understanding of the four major areas of intellectual property law-trademarks, copyrights, patents, and unfair competition. Discussions of each field conclude with a section on the new and emerging issues in that field and then an overview of international applications, including the methods by which intellectual property can be protected in other countries. On-line Companion for this text includes Appendices A-E, chapter summaries, trivia, and Internet resources.

Great book.......2007-05-13
I got this book when I first started working as a paralegal for a patent attorney. It gave me a great understanding of Intellectual Property. Great to learn the basics, of course there was more to learn on the job.

Face it: It's not enough to simply have a good idea for an invention, build it yourself, and expect to retire to Millionaire Acres. It doesn't work that way anymore, if it ever did. Here's a meticulous guide to the process of documenting and bringing your inventive ideas to the marketplace written by a successful inventor and a longtime patent attorney. All you would-be Thomas Edisons should have this book in your library.

A Superb Book.......2006-01-24
One of the biggest mistakes inventors make is the failure to maintain adequate records for their inventions. This is often due to not understanding the vital importance of proper records from the standpoint of the U.S. patent laws. The law mandates that only the first and true inventor shall receive a patent.
The Inventor's Notebook is primarily designed to provide the inventor with the records you will need to legally prove you are the "first and true inventor". Please note that it does not offer legal advice. Only your patent attorney or a patent agent can advise you as to the current state of the law with regard to your specific invention. Also, to better understand and appreciate its purpose, you should also read and study a good up-to-date guide to patent law, such as David Pressman's Patent It Yourself.
In addition to providing the means to prove you are legally the first to invent, the Inventor's Notebook provides you with guidelines for making decisions regarding patentability, commerciality, and whether other paths could be taken -- e.g., keeping your invention a trade secret. The book is divided into four main parts -- a work diary, legal protection, marketing and financing.
The work diary section gives you examples of how to record your invention with regard to its conception, purpose, description, operation, novelty, prior art and what the advantages of your invention are. It stresses the importance of drawing a line through blank sections to prevent others from later claiming material was added after the page was prepared, dated and witnessed. Entries must be made in ink and pencil sketches should be photocopied. The proper method for adding photos is also given.
The legal section explains the importance of and how to make a prior art search. The term, "prior art", in patent law means any material that can be found that was on record before the date you conceived your invention and that might be used to deny your right to a patent. This includes prior patents, magazine articles, technical journals, books, catalogs, etc.
The legal section includes pages for the recording of contacts made while developing your invention with emphasis on securing confidentiality agreements to protect your invention. It also stresses the extreme importance of the "one year rule", which requires that you must file your patent application within one year of the date on which you first publish, publicly use, sell or offer your invention, or any product that embodies same, for sale.
The marketing section notes that you should avoid the trap many first-time inventors fall into -- namely, spending vast amounts of time, energy and money on your invention before checking out its commercial potential. It also warns of the very common trap of paying money to an "invention developer" who, quite often, cannot even furnish the names of any successful clients. The book provides a list of 34 positive factors and 21 negative factors for evaluating your invention.
The marketing section also contains "Potential User Survey" forms and some recommendations for doing market researching. Also, it contains forms for recording your own study of "Relevant Market Trends" and a list of questions you should ask yourself regarding forming a decision as to manufacturing it yourself, distributing it yourself or selecting companies to do it for you. In addition, four pages of information regarding Internet Web pages useful to inventors are provided. This includes "A Cyberpreneur's Guide to the Internet". Today the Internet not only provides vast amounts of information but it also can be used to promote your invention.
The financial section contains guides and checklists for your budget estimates and for selling your invention or for seeking capital.
The back of the book contains lists of publications about patenting, business and books of interest to inventors. Also in the back of the book are tear-out copies of a "Consultants Work Agreement", "Proprietary Materials Agreement", "Positive and Negative Factor Evaluation Form" and a "Universal License Agreement Form". In addition, a six-page glossary is included covering 13 functions such as springs, shape, optics and fluid flow. This can be a great aid when you are at a loss of words to describe the parts and functioning of your invention. It clues you in on the terms patent examiners most often see. Using these terms will also make your invention more understandable to your patent attorney or agent.
This is a superb book. Every serious inventor should own a copy. The price is very low and its value to you is very high. It is simple to understand and is without the "legalese" some authors use to impress readers.
Inventors notebook contains mostly worksheets........1999-12-31
Yes, this is a very good book. To the point, with much useful information. It IS A WORKBOOK with mostly blank forms to document your invention. It does not have the volume of information I was expecting. I do think it is a good book though, just don't buy it as a first book. It was printed as a companion to "Patent it Yourself".

Book Description
This comprehensive guide offers publishing executives, counsel, editors, and writers a complete analysis of key legal issues they are likely to face day-to-day and includes over 35 detailed checklists. It is particularly valuable for its insightful coverage of recent issues and new developments in such hot areas as the effects of GATT and NAFTA, audio rights, electronic publishing, and recent fair use decisions.
Volume I of The Publishing Law Handbook is devoted to writer/publisher and publisher/ public relations issues. The authors take you through contract issues and analyze problems commonly encountered in negotiating royalties, advances, options, writer's warranty, and subsidiary rights splits.
Volume II analyzes intellectual property issues, including trademark and copyright law and filing procedures. The text is replete with case law examples illustrating how the incorporation of trademarks, the juxtaposition of illustrations and text, or a careless inaccuracy in quotations have exposed publishers to lawsuits and liability, as well as how a defensive strategy can strengthen the publisher's position.

Book Description
Under the aegis of the Goddess of Love, Isabel Allende uses her storytelling skills brilliantly in Aphrodite to evoke the delights of food and sex. After considerable research and study, she has become an authority on aphrodisiacs, which include everything from food and drink to stories and, of course, love. Readers will find here recipes from Allende's mother, poems, stories from ancient and foreign literatures, paintings, personal anecdotes, fascinating tidbits on the sensual art of food and its effects on amorous performance, tips on how to attract your mate and revive flagging virility, passages on the effect of smell on libido, a history of alcoholic beverages, and much more.
An ode to sensuality that is an irresistible blend of memory, imagination and the senses, Aphrodite is familiar territory for readers who know her fiction.
Amazon.com
There is something about reading suggestive material that awakens the senses--too often ignored in the fray of modern life--and fires the imagination. Perhaps it brings us back to those breathless, palpitating moments from childhood when puberty was a rosy smudge on the horizon and sex was an abstract term. Aphrodite is a long, savory, enthralling ode to sensuality.
In this bawdy memoir-cum-cookbook, Allende has put together an apothecary of aphrodisiacs, from snake's blood and rhinoceros horn to the more commonplace and more palatable oysters, "those seductive tears of the sea, which lend themselves to slipping from mouth to mouth like a prolonged kiss ... can be purchased in bottles, but there they look like malignant tumors; in contrast, moist and turgid in their shells they suggest delicate vulvae--a prime example of food that appeals to the eye." Chapters such as "Alligators and Piranhas"; "Supreme Stimulus for Lechery"; "Bread, God's Grace"; "Forbidden Fruits"; and "The Saucy Way to Foreplay" offer categorical listings on the aphrodisiac qualities of meats, spices, fruits and vegetables, and alcohol. A few chapters into the book, one begins to wonder what foods aren't considered erotic: "the shape of the wheat head is considered phallic, which proves human imagination knows no limits." Wine (no surprise there) is recommended because "it lessens inhibitions, relaxes, and fosters joy, three fundamental requirements for good performance, not only in bed but at the piano as well." However, as in many situations, moderation is key: too much and you may find your guest asleep in the soup.
Allende dismisses nouvelle cuisine in favor of earthier foods and more satisfying portions. More than 100 recipes are provided, from sauces and soups to hors d'oeuvres, supplemented with her voluptuous commentary. Recipes such as Mykonos Sauce, with walnuts, pistachios, basil, garlic, and milk; Widower's Figs; Filet Mignon Belle Epoque; and Alicante Cream Soup, with leeks, shrimp, oysters, paprika, and cream will have you in an apron (and perhaps not much else) in no time.
"If cookbooks make up part of your library," Allende notes, "books on eroticism should, too." And what more delightful combination of the two than Aphrodite, which provocatively underscores the relationship between sustenance and sexuality, and the aphrodisiac qualities of watching a man cook: "[Women] suppose that if he can remember how many minutes frog legs can tolerate in the skillet, how much greater reason he will have to remember how many tickles our G spot demands." Spiced with litanies of lust and longing from Anais Nin, W.B. Yeats, Pablo Neruda, and Lady Onogoro, and enriched with Allende's warm humor and lusty joie de vive, Aphrodite will tantalize your senses and engender lascivious grins. Recommended in delicious but moderate doses, this book is not for the faint of ... er, heart. --Jhana Bach
Customer Reviews:
Luscious, scrumptious and, oh yeah, comforting..........2007-09-22
John Updike once said that there are three great mysteries in life: sex, art, and religion. Isabel Allende has added food to that mysterious mix in a delightful way --- food is sexy and erotic and enticing in her book and is explored in a way that reminds one of lacy lingerie, seductive but mysterious at the same time. Allende, over fifty and still recovering from the painful loss of her daughter, writes boldly and bravely of how loss and all its pain is still concurrent with life's joys.
As a writer myself who has written both a cookbook and about the erotic lives of people over fifty, I found Allende's honesty, sensuality, and joy utterly luscious and also comforting in that even as we grow older we have our senses and can celebrate them as long as we allow ourselves to. This is a beautiful book with wonderful illustrations including the sexiest peaches you will ever see. The recipes are intriguing. But more than anything it is an affirmation that our senses have the power to heal us and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Life, Love, and Food.......2007-04-05
This collection of stories reads like an erotic cookbook of sorts. There's even a recipe section!
One of my Absolute Favorite Books.......2007-03-20
This book weaves a beautiful tapestry of life, love and food. The information on the aphrodisiac ingredients is not very in depth but always accurate. And the prose reads as though it is tumbling straight from Allende's mouth. Although I have not cooked from the book, I love that she added a section of recipes.
Food for thought and laugh.......2005-04-07
I have read "Paula" and there is no doubt that Isabel Allende is a talented writer. Her passionate tone seems to just find a way to your heart.
Aphrodite is acookbook erotic-style... truly inspires fun ideas for both food and foreplay. Great historic facts on spices, a collection of rather comical stories and the recipes are to die for.
If you are a hedonist. Get this!
This memoir hits the spot !.......2003-11-13
I have read this book in installments. Why? Because I knew my mother would have a fit if she knew I had read it. Lusty, juicy, it's wonderful education for a curious virgin like me.
(I swear on the Bible I'm a virgin.)

How I Passed.......2007-02-01
That should be 5 stars... Having zero financial background, I researched all the book reviews and decided to go with the book and CDrom available directly from Kaplan (purchased Dearborn). They sell their newest, second edition direct from their website as a bundle with the CDrom. I also used a book and audio CD set from "Pass The 7" (Robert Walker). I read each section from both books, then used the practice exams on Kaplan's CDrom to identify areas of weakness, and went back to re-read those topics. I listened to the audio CD's in the car constantly. I did full-length, 250 question practice exams each day for 10 days and went back to re-read areas of weakness. I studied part-time (about 2 hours a day on average) for 3 months (I have a busy life and a family) and ended up getting an 86% on the real thing in a little under 4 hours. I felt well-prepared doing it the way I did. 66% of test-takers passed in 2006 with an average score of 73%. I didn't do too badly :)
Just took the test.......2004-10-26
I have little financial background and needed to pass the test in about a month. Here is what I did with this book, the only book I have ever used.
1) read the book one time. Do all the chapter tests. Understand them as best you can. Read all of the material once.
I suggest 30-50 pages a night depending on what subject. Unfortunately the first few sections are a grind (Munis and Options are included) and take longer - make sure to read these to understanding.
Pay attentin to all "test topic" alerts in the book.
2) Buy the CD and take tests. Lots of tests. Lots and lots of tests. Take full section tests ( I took them in increments of 50 and 100) until you are getting 80% of them correct.
At the end of each section of the book - take multiple tests on that section on the CD immediately afterwards. AS you read more and more sections - combine more and more subjects into the tests you take along with taking some that are subject specific.
Take tests that include all of the subjects too - then find what sections and sub-sections you are scoring poorly on and take tests upon test of just those subjects until you know them.
The CD is a must. You HAVE to have it. I probably took 150 tests ranging from full 125 all subject practice tests (that are JUST like the real thing as far as form and questions) to 50 question tests focusing on subjects I was scoring poorly on.
1) study the book and do the tests in the book
2) get the CD and go to town like a madman. Take tests until you cant take any more tests. You cannot take too many.
I got 87 first try and finished the first 3 hour session in 50 minutes and the second 3 hour section in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Took under 2 hours total. About 30% of the questions were EXACT - the others similiar.
My only complaint is that the section on Order Entry/Confirmation/and Settlement sections. I was in the 60% range on the test for that section and was LOST during the test on q's regarding those subjects.
You can pass the test with a month, this book and the dearborn CD.
good luck
Here's how you pass the Series 7 Exam.......2004-06-27
Honestly, all the books out there (including this one) for the Series 7 exam are thick and filled with too much information. If you actually try to read the book from front to back, you are doing yourself a disservice. It is way too much information to retain. By the time you complete reading the book, you would have forgotten everything in the beginning.
My advice: Skip reading the book and jump straight into doing the practice exams. Read the questions and compare it to the answer. Only use the book as a reference. Do the practice exams over and over until you have a passing score of 80%+.
The book is actually pretty good if you insist on reading it. They explain the difficult concepts pretty well with the use of visual aids and Hotsheet summary.
Good luck! Get plenty of rest the night before. The test is long and draining!
Comprehensive Review to Pass Test.......2004-05-08
This is an excellent book. I recommend completing the book in 25 days ~30 pages per day. Get the CD and do multiple 100+ questions test. Also, the audio CDs are excellent.
Score: 92%
If you can get through the book it is ok.......2004-03-09
As one other reader mentioned, there are some mistakes which are a bit fustrating. My advice if you are going to get this book is to leave yourself plenty of time to take some online tests as well. I don't think it's manageable to go through this book as well as another one, but be advised that there are some items on the test that I didn't see in the book (i.e. money laundering). Study time (4 weeks + online tests). Score: 84.
Customer Reviews:
Fully interactive, user-friendly, learner-oriented. .......2004-08-29
I bought the book thinking that it would merely be instructing in an traditional ways. However, I was totally wrong.
It comes with so many helpful features:
1. Test Topic Alert! --- This makes sure that you understand the most tested concepts and reminds you to pay more attention to certain topics.
2. Take Notes --- it provides more details and explanations on difficult concepts. It clears up common misunderstandings.
3. Example ---- Very detailed, helpful examples that contributes to good interpretion.
4. Quiz ---- they are not that easy, although they may sound like they are. Quizes enforces the reader to understand certain concepts before he/she goes on to next topic. All comes with answer and rationale, which is extremely helpful.
5. Lesson Exams --- Chapter test. Gives you a general idea how you did in that lesson.
6. Hot Sheet (Most creative and important feature!) --- it actually helps you to focus and literally have notes ready for each lesson. It is especially helpful during final review.
Happy reading. It's a must read if you are serious about taking the "series 7", a long 6-hour exam.
dearborn the best.......2004-06-23
Took my series 7 exam today (6/21/04)( 84%). I read Barrons, Arco and Dearborn.
Dearborn was clearly the best hands down. They had great studying tips, easy to read format, you CAN pass the test with this book alone. Just cover everything, answer every practice question, use the disc and there will be no surprises. Arco was OK, but compared to Dearborn it doesn't hold a candle. I was initially a bit worried because I had the 12th edition ( 3 yrs. old) but it didn't matter. Good luck to all...
GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS!!!!!.......2003-12-08
Dearborn is an outstanding company who writes superior material so you can pass the test you need. Myself failed this exam 3 times using Bisys Education material. I switched to Dearborn to study for my series 6, 63 and here just recently my 7 exam again. I passed each one the very first time using thier study books and cd roms. I passed the Series 7 with a 78% didn't even feel like I had any worries about failing when I turned in my exam. Passed no problem. I deffinatley reccomend this book to anybody wanting to pass the series 7 the first time through. Read the book once, pay attention, have it on hand for refreshers, and just pound the CD-ROM Drills hard everyday do at least two of them every single day. If you pound them consistently and wear yourself out on them you will have no problem passing. Good Luck and USE THIS BOOK TO PASS!!!!
Our firm uses this book exclusively.......2003-11-05
We are a broker-dealer (equities + derivatives + stock futures) and have found that, for our new employees, in comparison to all of the other Series 7 test prep books, this is the best...and by a very large margin. If you only bought one book, then this is it. None of the others even come close.
If you don't have the cash to take a "crash course" you can pass the exam with only this book. BUT...you really have to throughly study the chapters, and then honestly take all of the paper and CD based tests and then review all of your mistakes and research why they are mistakes and then continue to do so until you consistently get scores in the 80's then you will pass the Series 7 Exam.
Since, according to law, if you are required to take the "Series 7" then you are usually required to take the "Series 63" (State law) exam, we strongly recommend this publisher's companion book, the "Series 63 Exam" book. Yes, that book "blows away" its competition also.
Please refer to our review on this publisher's "Series 24" exam, not so much that you will immediately need to take the higher level, "Series 24" exam, but for the description about securities industry licensing and registration, as you WILL NEED your employing firm to sponsor you, in order to be allowed to take this exam.
Thus if you are un-employed, you cannot take this exam on your own inititiave, even if you think it is your ticket into the securites industry...so don't waste the money for this book and its companion book (Series 63) unless you are actually employed by a securites firm and they are willing to fill out all of the forms and to sponsor and approve of your taking of this exam.
Another thing.....don't even spend the money for this book, if you have ever been charged (note that the threshold is charged with , not convicted or dismissed) with any crime that in any way relates to money in the last ten years, since there is a very good chance that you will be barred from the securites industry (Federal Law), so take the time to check with your employer and the Federal "U-4" form that they have on you.

I don't think you will find better!.......2003-10-07
This is a very comprehensive and excellent manual. I read this book once, took the class, then spent a month doing the practice tests and practice finals. On the last two practice finals I got 86% on each. Today, I took the 7 and passed with an 84%. I found the questions on the CD ROM (which comes with the book) almost indentical to the actual exam, and even more difficult than the exam. If you read the book once, take the class, then keep doing practice tests and practice finals, over and over, scoring at least 80%, you will pass the Series 7 easily. There were absolutely no surprises on the test today, and there were only 2 or 3 questions that I wasn't fimiliar with. This is great material. Great! I am very pleased and will use Dearborn for the Series 66.

Not the worst but far from the best.......2005-11-20
This book has missing information and is quite often inaccurate. I have several books from different companies and this one is on the lower end.
Most of the books I've read have incorrect, imprecise, or conflicting statements. For example, the Boston Institute of Finance Stockbroker Course Series 7/63 Preparation Guide says "A stockholder has the right to examine the list of stockholders. It does not mean the stockholder can examine detailed financial records of the corporation." Barron's book says "A shareholder has the right to examine the books and records of the corporation." The truth is, it depends. Even non-shareholders can view 10K statements and other filings. But examining detailed books would probably require a legal procedure by a shareholder, regardless of whether s/he had the right conferred by owning common shares.
I definitely wouldn't recommend it as the only guide you buy. The Empire Stockbroker Training Institute and STC books are much much better.
Pretty Good Book........2001-07-15
This is an excellent book for anyone taking the series 7 exam. However, it doesn't have enough quizzes and tests to prepare you for the exam. The material in the book is enough to pass the exam. Every registered rep should (and probably does) have this book in their arsenal. A Definate buy!

Book Description
More than any other public figure, Václav Havel has reflected on the opportunities and dilemmas facing humankind as a result of the Communism's collapse. His life serves as an example of responsible and moral action, even at the cost of much personal suffering.
In the first book to bring together Havel's life and work, James Pontuso examines the Czech president's political philosophy. Pontuso argues that Havel's life as a dissident and political leader, his political writings, and his plays are part of a whole and must be understood as intimately connected to one another. In this engaging work, Pontuso skillfully explores these connections and explains Havel's prescriptions for political life.
Customer Reviews:
A complex man from the land of Svejk.......2006-04-10
Ever since Vaclav Havel appeared on the scene I have been intrigued by his persona, especially when it came to his popularity with the West compared to the relative insignificance of our post-communist leaders (i.e. of Hungary). This book finally provided the answer, although as it turns out it is not an easy one. Havel is as complex as Central-Europe itself or even more so; and his inscrutability or ambiguous character made a definitely Svejkian impression on me. Pontuso makes a very good job to explain the complexities of this Central-European character, including his traits as philosopher, politician and playwright. I particularly enjoyed his crash-course on Martin Heidegger (whose philosophy greatly influenced Havel) whose philosophical views eluded me until now. Pontuso's clear writing on the subject finally clarified for me the major issues that bugged Mr. Heidegger during most his career. Havel's charisma is palpable throughout the book, although I had the impression that Havel had a sheltered upbringing and despite his inprisonment he did not lose his idealism. The latter is not an unequivocal virtue in Central-Europe where we have been subjected to a huge overdose of it already during the last century. All the more significant that Mr. Havel managed to keep both that and his integrity and remained a popular leader during his tenure as president.
I am not sure what Mr. Ball is talking about when he talks about neocons and Pontuso's book: there is not a trace of neoconservatism in this book in my opinion. I hope he didn't mean the mentioning of Plato or Aristotle. It would be a sorry state of affairs in the modern-day US if any reference to ancient philosophers should evoke Strauss, neocons, or the latters' twisted minds.
In any case, this is a very decent and pleasant book (in fact I've read the most of it on one Sunday afternoon) and gave a satisfactory answer to my curiosity about Havel's character. Pontuso is apparently fond of his subject, but then again, so was Einstein of his relativistic theory.
Havel Without Zappa.......2005-10-13
What happens when you strip away all that was counter-cultural and leftish about Vaclav Havel's political and dramatic writings? As this book demonstrates, you get a version of Havel that neo-cons have been peddling since President Bush the 1st and Francis Fukuyama: a Vaclav Havel who appears to be a quirky surrogate for American conservative thought. True, Havel drifted into this mold during his presidency years of the 1990s. But the "dissident" Havel of the 70s and 80s was no Leo Strauss. And the attempt to squeeze him into this framework, as this book does, is pretty unsatisfying. The Anglophone world still needs an introductory book on Havel - such as Pontuso's attempts to be - that strives for real, academic distance on the subject.

Book Description
The relationship in Tanzania between the public order institutions of the State, such as the police, prisons, field force unit and other security forces on the one hand, and citizens on the other, was always considered to be smooth. But the reality was different. It was noteworthy that the parties were brought together at a workshop to consider all aspects of the issues. Public institutions, the media, academics and the judiciary participated. The fifteen papers from the workshop comprise this volume, divided into three parts: The Basis of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms; The Judiciary and Fundamental Rights and Freedoms; and The Police and Prisons and Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. The Attorney General's opening paper sets the background: whilst fully recognisingthe international character of human rights, he cautions against the danger of importing ready made policies repugnant to national life, and stresses the need to have regard for the nation's history, culture, traditions, and social and economic development.

Book Description
The main objective of this book is to present some of the fundamental structural aspects in the design of respiratory organs while debating and speculating on when, how and why these states were founded. The author's main thesis is that the modern gas exchangers are products of protracted processes that have entailed adaptation to specific environments and lifestyles. Only those feasible designs that have proven adequately compentent in meeting demands for molecular oxygen have been preserved. The author's approach has been to look into the limiting functional properties as regards the respiratory capacities of gas exchangers while finding out the specific structural adaptations that have evolved to meet the metabolic needs or to look into form and discern how it limits function.
