Author Jay Rifenbary is a former West Point cadet, sales professional and corporate manager. As a professional speaker, consultant and president of a training and development center, he has a powerful message for readers of this book. Stop making excuses and begin to accept responsibility for everything you do. No Excuse! is enjoyable to read because of the raw energy and enthusiasm that it imparts. Rifenbary writes well and provides his personal philosophies to help the reader discover their ability to achieve success and fulfillment. His philosophy is a variant of servant leadership principles including the deep desire to serve others, accountability and valuing people more than wealth or power.

No Excuse! begins with one of the most dramatic prologues I have ever read. It not only introduces the book extremely well, but the author returns to his "special experience" in the epilogue also. The underpinning of his philosophy is borrowed from his days at West Point when "No Excuse, Sir" was one of the few answers a plebe was allowed to utter as a response to an upperclassman. Rifenbary exclaims, "We may get down on ourselves and use certain excuses to relinquish responsibility. That's exactly what excuses are used for; to avoid doing something or to "pass-the-buck". I dare you to make a list. Then when you hear yourself or others making an excuse, simply say, "No Excuse!''"

The book is divided into 2 parts comprised of 14 chapters. Part 1 lays the foundation of the author's no excuse philosophy with a discussion of the principles of self-responsibility, purpose and integrity. He considers this an important preparation for what he coins the Staircase-of-Success or THESAURUS factor presented in Part 2 of the book. Rifenbary takes each letter in the word THESAURUS and uses it as a step to teach an important point or principle. A total of 9 steps take the reader up the Staircase-of-Success. For example, the first step is "Totally Forgive" (Chapter 5) and it ponders the liberating influence that complete forgiveness allows when we forgive others and ourselves of faults and transgressions. When someone embraces total forgiveness there is no longer room for complaining or blaming because the person takes charge, and gains greater control over their life. No Excuse! is not simply a book to read, but it employs many tools to stimulate thought and action from the reader. Rifenbary uses many parables or stories to highlight his points. He also provides an Action Plan at the end of most chapters along with some charts and his own personality indicator.

No Excuse! is an enjoyable book to read. It may not break new ground or provide a radical new leadership philosophy, but it is certainly encouraging to read. As a result of Rifenbary's gift of clarity and printed energy, you will believe and know that change is possible in your life. If you are interested in discovering servant leadership principles presented in a dynamic and motivational book, you have no excuse... you will want to read this book.

This is the most exceptional man and he will change your life by the words in this book. Stephen Fay's book The Collapse of Barings joins a growing list of contemporary accounts of the banking scandal that brought down England's most prestigious investment bank. The financial calamity that Nicholas Leeson unleashed through his unauthorized trading was so grand in scope that the story seemed likely to be of great interest as well. A story about a "rogue trader" in Singapore who could destabilize finances worldwide and bring down the Queen's bank has so many angles worthy of exploration, from the character of Leeson to the technology that made it possible, from the history of Barings to the nature of global finance, that you can't blame writers for rushing in to chronicle it. But with Leeson's own tell-all tome Rogue Trader, and the excellent account Total Risk: Nick Leeson and the Fall of Barings Bank by Judith H. Rawnsley, as well as a fascinating chapter on the Barings scandal in Martin Meyer's book The Bankers: The Next Generation, the story has largely been told. Nevertheless, Stephen Fay is an excellent business writer, and his book is an adept study of Leeson and the damage he did to banking and Barings. Fay pays particular attention to the British reaction to the Barings collapse and uncovers anglophile angles previously overlooked. Those looking for another take on the Barings scandal or an exhaustive collection of Barings books will snatch this book up with no regrets.

The story of Nick Leeson and the collapse of Barings happened 10 years ago, but it continues to hold my imagination. Perhaps I had been captivated by Barings' former mystique. Stephen Fay's book is well researched and may be the best of the "Barings" books (I have not yet read the others). It appears to be a well balanced account which takes in what (the hell) Leeson says he was up to and compares it against the official investigations, observations of others in the firm, and adds a dash of common sense, in an attempt to try to provide a total picture of the debacle.

One thread running through Fay's book is the weakness of Barings' control systems; the Bank was apparently attempting to enter the 21st century with 19th century risk management techniques. Another subtext is that a lot of the successful management alchemy that had driven Barings in its Victorian heyday had been bred out of the firm by the time Nick entered the picture, so that top executives lacked the necessary antennae to tune into or uncover the risks which Leeson was exposing them to. I admit there is a lot of strength to the argument that there was a lot of willful ignorance going on with all of Leeson's fake profits to prop up the bottom line, as Fay says:

"Greed is the easiest of the...motives to understand. In the old days, most of the Baring family - especially those who worked in the bank - were very comfortably off. Their motives were a blend of influence in [London], social position and a bit of public service. The clerks were not greedy because they were in no position to be. Big Bang in 1985 altered that, and the fast growth of derivatives markets in the late 1980s changed it beyond recognition. Having transferred their last shares to the Baring Foundation, the directors now relied on bonuses to earn good money. But much of the firm's profit now depended on the people who had once formed the function of the clerks."...like Leeson, who was on his way up from that station.

A strength of the Fay text is that it is completely devoid of a tabloid approach to the whole topic. There are not even any pictures, certainly not of Lisa Leeson in tears, unless you count Nick in handcuffs on the dust jacket (I am also excepting photocopies of memos and faxes, which are informative). This book is written with an organization that an auditor could love, and apprentices at the major securities trading firms of the world could do worse than read this book on their first day of employment.

Perhaps it doesn't matter looking back that the Bank of England failed to bail Barings out; I hope that the folk once employed there have gradually made their way in the world, I even hope the (still married?) Nick & Lisa have sorted out their lives. Barings seems like an antique, a fine piece of China that finally fell off a shelf and shattered. It could have been different, if Christopher Heath's trading culture had been better melded with the Bank's stuffy side; if they had, earlier on, spent GBP 10 million on that fancy new trading system called BRAINS (and figured out Nick before he figured out how to hack it); if they had roused themselves earlier to investigate various holes in their trading accounts and tracked down the origin of the SLK receivable. If only, if only, if only... Such are the decisions of life.

It seems highly implausible that management did not know that Nicholas Leeson, the man being blamed for the Barings collapse, was arbitraging his risk in an unscrupulous manner if it checked the back end of his trades. Recent evidence also reveals that there is a probability that the Wunderkind from Watford, as Leeson was referred to before his downfall, actually told his bosses about the volume and substance of his Asian bets. One theory says such neglect is due to the fact that Barings is owned by a foundation, which traditionally has a weak governance system. Another holds that the class background of management, primarily composed of upper-class people who disdain looking over the mundane jobs of such people as Leeson, is also responsible.

Full of information but dense.......2007-05-09

I received this book in the high hopes of having everything explained to me in clear English. For the most part, my expectations were met. The downside is that the reading is quite dense in most parts. In addition, being a Tax Professional, I found a few, minor errors in the Tax Planning section. Otherwise, the book has been a tremendous help in my studies to become a CFP(R).

CFP Course 1.......2007-03-24

Good book to form the foundation for the CFP training and exam. It's too expensive, however. My guess is that it is priced assuming most students get reimbursed by their employers. For those of us who have to pay for the book out of our own pockets, it is too expensive.

Typical Textbook.......2007-02-21

textbook was purchased new. It is a large softcover which I am not sure will hold up for the length of my studies and I have found that much of the tax information is of course out of date and there are a couple of references that are incorrect. Time for a reprint.

Pretty good.......2006-07-25

A lot of good info. Fills in the gaps in my knowledge of investing, finance, banking, estate planning, retirement options, etc. There are quite a few typos, however, and a lot of awkward sentence structure. Strange because it's nothing that MS Word wouldn't catch. It needs a pro writer re-write.
