Book Description

CHAPTER 2: THE VARIOUS "HEADHUNTING" TRADES It is interesting for a client or a candidate to know what kind of Headhunter he is dealing with. Several cases may arise with, naturally, a number of possible variants for each of them.

The two major trends to be found in the United States, probably many more than in Europe or France, are the " retainer " missions and those carried out in " contingency ". Both approaches are quite specific, and even if the goal is similar, the means, practices and inherent characteristics of the trade are completely opposite.

In the Executive Search trade, with the retainer option, the mission is under an exclusivity contract signed with the client, and the fees and expenses to be paid to the provider are stipulated in a clear agreement which also sets a specific time-table for these payments. The provider - in this case - the firm - is under no obligation other than the means to be committed in order to present a short-list of excellent candidates who may successfully satisfy the mission's needs. Of course, retainer firms offer the guaranty of resuming the search, follow-up on the hired candidate, ...

In the contingency Executive Search formula, the client/provider relationship is not as clear, less well-structured, less sure, as your provider is put in direct competition with other firms having the same work procedures; such consultants are sometimes dubbed " Bounty Hunters "; their services are paid for only when the candidate is found and placed. In France, very few Top Management Direct Approach firms really and regularly work this way. However, a few years ago, a lack of skills in the computer business opened up the path to a few firms intent on recruiting top-level specialists in SAP, People Soft, and in addition, familiar with company environments. Contingency was then commonplace upon the request both of demanding clients and of these firms. On the other hand, the level of practice did not exceed Top Middle management.

In our survey, it has been our choice only to discuss " Retainer " firms, mainly because today in France, Top Management is only exceptionally carried out on a contingency basis.

The Executive Search trade also varies somewhat depending on the size of the firm, the structures, company philosophy, the importance granted to the search function, the computer equipment and the size (in terms of economic reality) of the network, integrated or not.

We met some firms where only one or two Consultants (liberal profession profile) plied their trade with one researcher, or sometimes without any personal assistants, with the work being subcontracted on the outside.

Most firms employ 3 to 5 Consultants (small firms), with either one researcher per two Consultants or even one per Consultant in some cases.

A 6-to-12 Consultant firm (middle-sized) is already less common, and specialization becomes necessary along with strict internal rules, in order to avoid overlapping interests at the client level.

There are not very many Executive Search firms in France which employ from 13 to 18 Consultants (Large Structure Profile); in 1998 they could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Over the past ten or fifteen years, computers have enabled most firms, if not the entire profession, to organize company management , the follow-up of missions, and the management of Consultants as profit centers on one hand, and on the other to set up candidate files and large databases with frequent update systems. Computer tools and use of the Internet will undoubtedly become increasingly vital in maintaining and even drastically improving one's performance-levels with respect to deadlines and information, in order to be competitive at a European, international and global level.

The Consultant trade varies according to the type of structure, the team dedicated to the search mission, but the Consulting role is, and remains, important in the client's opinion, as shared thinking between a client and his firm can often unravel the recruitment problematic by putting it in perspective, in a different dimension, and encourages one to consider options which the manager might never have thought of.

Bruneteau is to be congratulated on an interesting and perceptive commentary on the mystic art of headhunting. This book is invaluable for companies new to headhunting or those who need to use a headhunter for hiring a key individual in France.

    5 out of 5 stars Sales bible.......2002-02-28

This book is worth much more than I paid. Mr. Ziglag demonstrated his experience of selling as a salesman by telling stories. It is fun when I read this thick book, although it takes time (2 weeks) to complete this book. His experience was so exciting I am thinking of switching my career from high tech to sales. He is definitely the master of sales. Maybe he is right, the best career is in sales. From there, one can establish his own business and become rich.

3 out of 5 stars Just get on with it!!.......2001-02-14

I respect mr. ziglar's work. I also understand that a scathing review will NOT affect him in the slightest. He's in that position where it doesn't affect him anymore. However, I have to say that this book leans more toward the FRUSTRATING then anything. I'd more recommend Network Marketing for Dummies if you want info on actual TECHNIQUES right away!

That's what I was expecting when I purchased this book. I wanted to read HOW TOs and DO THIS and the basic phsychology beneath selling...FROM THE START! However, I'm stuck with repetitive one-liners and dragging anecdotes; most of which were covered in NM4 DUMMIES!

Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind a success story here and there; you'll find them in NM4 Dummies, but they are LABELED as such ("true stories")! If you don't want to read them, you don't have to! However, we aren't given that luxury in Secrets. Instead you have to "go fish" until you find something that really does it for you; or in my case, haven't already heard.

I understand that mr. ziglar has a wealth of knowledge in this field and I'm really interested in tapping into that knowledge, but it seems like getting through this book is as tough as "reaching the top" in marketing!

It would have really been more helpful if he'd have just provided us with our reason for buying instead of making us hunt for them.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2000-06-01

I found this book very insightful! It taught me how to rise to the top and the tools to get where I wanted to be. I love it and would tell everyone to read it!:)

Will America's appetite for all things under the Tuscan sun ever be satisfied? Not likely with Pino Luongo's Simply Tuscan. Luongo, owner of 10 restaurants and Manhattan's market Tuscan Square, may have spent the past 20 years in the Big Apple, but he is still synchronized to life in the Tuscan countryside. Simply Tuscan honors those rhythms with its seasonal organization and easy mix of food lore, travelogue, and personal reminiscences. Luongo opens with spring (though fall is his favorite season for cooking); in this section, the Italian passion for simplicity--which Luongo constantly endorses--achieves quintessential form in a mache salad topped with quail eggs. The fall section is studded with such treasures as a trio of recipes showcasing the revered tartufo bianco, or white truffle. All the reader really need remember, though, is Luongo's offhand remark on his favorite way of enjoying this delicacy: shaved over fried eggs. Simply Tuscan speaks to cooks of all abilities. The pared-down arrangements of summer and spring will yield memorable results for less-confident cooks who take care to use only the most immaculate and best ingredients. More familiar hands will welcome the savory complexities of the fall and winter menus. Professional cooks will want the book for its bomboloni recipe alone. A favorite from Luongo's childhood, this sweet fritter is used to evaluate potential pastry chefs for his restaurants. If you can't make bomboloni, you'll never cook for Pino. --Sumi Hahn Almquist

    Book Description

Renowned restaurateur, bon vivant, and armchair philosopher Pino Luongo presents a year of Tuscan menus, with recipes for living the good life.

Pino Luongo is Tuscan to his toes--by birth, in sensibility, philosophically, and in the way he lives his life. To be Tuscan, Pino says, "is to honor all your senses." And he believes that everyone would benefit from having a little bit of Tuscany in his or her life, which is why he has written Simply Tuscan.

Welcome in the spring with a menu of quintessentially seasonal recipes, such as Artichoke, Romaine, and Pea Soup, followed by Roasted Veal with Lemon and Sage, and sweetened with Panna Cotta with Strawberries and Balsamic Vinegar. Or welcome your in-laws with a meal they'll never forget: Zucchini Soup with Mint, Ricotta Ravioli with Osso Buco Gremolata, and Upside-Down Warm Apple Tart.

Follow Pino to the seashore in summer, where, as he says, "the beach makes us wild with energy," to partake of a Summer Night Seafood Extravaganza--Crispy Fried Shrimp with Summer Vegetables in Sweet and Sour Vinaigrette, Trout Roasted Porchetta-Style, and Lobster and Cannellini Beans in Guazzetto.

Celebrate Thanksgiving Tuscan-style and, Pino promises, it will give you something else to be thankful for. Start the meal with Farro, Swiss Chard, and Butternut Squash Soup. Follow it up with Goose with Vineyard Stuffing instead of the usual turkey. Try Mashed Potatoes with Leeks in place of the candied sweets, and finish with Spiced Poached Pears with Vin Santo Sabayon.

Winter means comfort food all over the world, and in Tuscany this might mean Oven-Baked Leg of Pork Glazed with Chestnut Honey, a Carrot and Apple Purée, and Caramelized Baba Scented with Orange.

All of these recipes and many more, accompanied by Pino's wise and witty commentary on the occasions for which they were devised, are intended, in his words, to "convert you to Tuscanism...once you get a taste for it, there's no turning back." And this beautifully designed, lavishly illustrated, deliciously tempting book of recipes is certain to do just that.

Some of the recipes, such as Cacciucco, a fish and shellfish stew, or the Easter Torta with Cheese, are totally, typically,
traditionally Tuscan; others, like Crabmeat Ravioli in Ginger-Scented Vegetable Broth and the Bay Scallop and Asparagus Risotto are modern interpretations, which, nevertheless, remain truly Tuscan in spirit.

SIMPLY TUSCAN is intended, in Pino's words, to "convert you to Tuscanism--once you get a taste for it, there's no turning back." And this beautifully designed, lavishly illustrated, deliciously tempting book of recipes is certain to do just that. -->

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Pino book!.......2007-06-19

This is my favorite Pino Luongo cookbook, and I have four. I love that the chapters are divided by season and he offers menus for each. I love the photos of the food and I love that he includes children as people who deserve to eat well too. These recipes are great and vary from the quick and easy to the more complex so you get it all. I highly recommend Simply Tuscan!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Italian Cookbook.......2007-04-06

Simply Tuscan is a wonderful book that captures one of Italy's finest exports -- their food. The Italian lifestyle is defined in their cooking, and in this book that pairs recipe with occassion. The format is organized by season, so you can easily select dishes to compliment the day. The recipes are simple to prepare. The menu combinations are excellent. Simply Tuscan is a wonderful continuation of Luongo's earlier cookbook - A Tuscan in the Kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars Why go to Italy when you can eat like you're already there?.......2005-03-11

I bought this book after seeing Pino on Martha Stewart's show, as he made many variations of pizza. They looked so good I couldn't wait to buy his book and try his recipes.
Italian and Tuscan cooking has great heritage, with some wonderful flavors that will have you thinking you're in italy in no time!
Although I may not be daring or have an 'evolved' enough palate to try everything in his book, there are some great recipes to satisfy anyone. But after reading and seeing what a great chef he is, I am dying to visit his NYC Restaurant.
From the Risotto to the Lamb stew, everything I have tried so far has been great.

3 out of 5 stars A delightful looking book. Works less well as a cookbook.......2004-03-03

`Simply Tuscan' is one of several books based on Tuscan cuisine by restaurateur / author Pino Luongo. While his latest book, `La Mia Cucina Toscana' is pointedly about dishes at his restaurants which are based on Tuscan dishes or at least ideas about Tuscan dishes, this book would appear to simply be about Tuscan dishes. If you read the fine print, however, you see that recipes in this book are also not authentically Tuscan. They are also not authentically Pino Luongo, as they are credited to the author's executive chef, Marta Pulini.

These little dissemblences can, of course, all be explained away, especially since this book is intended to be as much a memoir and invocation of life in Tuscany as it is a cookbook.

The best way to conjure up an image of the author's depiction of life in Tuscany is to see Hannibal Lector's lifestyle in Florence at the beginning of the movie `Hannibal'. Through skillfully placed photographs; watercolor paintings; pen and ink drawings on sepia colored, water streaked paper; and flip-flopping between an artistic, Arabic looking font and a crude Courier font, the book gives a rustic background to narrative on the pleasures of living in Tuscany. I have no doubt whatsoever that Tuscany is simply one of the more beautiful places on Earth. As the author points out, it is also one of the fountainheads of the Renaissance.

But if Tuscany is such an idyllic location, why did the author emigrate to the murky canyons of New York City. The author routinely travels back to Tuscany, however I suspect it is as much to mine a business resource as it is to be refreshed by the Tuscan sun. Part of the author's business organization is a shop of Tuscan merchandise in Rockafeller Center.

The book's culinary content is organized by season and, within season, by menu fitting various occasions. This enhances the flow of the book as memoir of Tuscan life, but it does not help those of us who wish to mine the book for authentic Tuscan recipes. The arty layout of recipes in crude Courier font intermixed with pictures with no captions compounds the difficulty to use this book as a culinary tool.

The culinary memoir which, in my experience, comes the closest to this book is Vincent Schiavelli's `Many Beautiful Things'. Schiavelli's book is immensely more successful as a memoir by being much more modest in its graphics and much more personal and informative in its narrative.

Luongo's book also has some odd inconsistencies in recipe weights and measures. In most cases, flour is measured by cup, but in some, it is measured by weight, with no explanation of the difference.

Luongo's book deserves a browse for the charming drawings. I would look elsewhere for sources of authentic, useable Tuscan recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Well Done!!!.......2002-05-21

This book is so beautiful and the recipes are so wonderful! I highly reccommend this book for anyone who loves Tuscany, fine cuisine or just a lesson on culture and history. Great reading and Even Better Cooking!!!

Nelken is the editor of this book, for which read, he has collated the material. There is not a coherent developing thread, it is just a mis-mash of articles about volatility. At least two of the chapters have results that are demonstrably incorrect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review and Explanation of Index Funds.......2005-12-28

As an excellent review of index fund investing, I give this book an A.

Tweddell and Pierce's book was one of the first books about index fund investing. They published this book in 1997, prior to the index fund 1999 peak in popularity.

They do an excellent job of explaining index mutual funds and why they are advantageous for most investors.

They point out the paradox that a person is better off seeking the help of an expert for most things including medical doctors, car mechanics, and plumbers. Financial advice is one area where seeking out experts is not necessarily the right way to increase your net worth.

The key point of their book is that most active fund managers can not beat the indexes due to higher costs. Another key point is that by adopting a buy-and-hold index fund strategy, investors will reap the returns of the stock market because they will quit their futile efforts at market timing. They point out that indexing is even more important in bonds because expenses of actively managed bond funds eat up a lower starting return for bonds than stocks.

They point out the importance of asset allocation and demonstrate how an indexing strategy can be used to implement your desired asset allocation strategy.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros, The Coffeehouse Investor, and the Armchair Millionaire.

4 out of 5 stars This is a very readable book on index investing........1999-02-02

I liked this book on its readability. I scanned a few other books on indexing; they were too dry for me.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Introduction to Index funds.......1997-07-10

A great introduction to index funds. Two other texts that complement this book are John Bogle's "Bogle on Mutual Funds" and the seminal "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" by Burton Malkiel. The case against actively managed mutual (or pension) funds is persuasively presented by any of these three but the Tweddell/Pierce treatment is more practical. The only criticism is that its list of index funds is already out of date. Fidelity, Merrill Lynch, etc. have recently joined the fray and some funds have closed

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had read something like this ten years ago........1997-05-10

Great book--readable, troubling, eye-opening. I wish that I had read something like this ten years ago

                Book Description

The Economic and Compliance Consequences of Taxation examines the impact of the tax levels (relative to GDP) and the tax mix (direct and indirect taxes relative to GDP) on economic growth and employment, and tax evasion, among other matters. The study embodies the integrated findings of 37 separate working papers released by the New Zealand Inland Revenue over the period 1994-1997. The working papers were mainly written by a team of 10 national economic and tax experts and reviewed by an external team of outside experts comprising Professors Alan Auerbach (UCLA), Richard Bird (University of Toronto), Erwin Diewert (University of British Columbia) and Jack Mintz (University of Toronto). These experts also reviewed the final report. Key questions addressed by the volume include how many changes in the tax level and mix affect: The level of tax evasion by individuals (working for others), the self-employed and small firms; The tax gap between current and potential tax revenue; and Macroeconomic indicators (the level of economic output, the rate of economic growth, and the rates of unemployment, employment generation and labour force participation) . Given existing tax system trends, including the current level of taxes and the tax mix (personal, indirect, corporate and other taxes), the specific objectives of the work are to determine whether: Tax evasion is rising or falling; The tax gap is shrinking or widening; and The prospects for economic growth and employment creation are improving or deteriorating. These objectives can be encapsulated in a summary question which the book attempts to answer: Is the tax system, by virtue of its consequences on the behaviour of individuals, firms and the economy, becoming healthier or not? Thus, are the consequences of the current tax system moving towards a best practice regime?

                Book Description

The Anatomy of Successful Problem Solving
How do great leaders solve problems differently from the rest of us? In Breakthrough Thinking you will learn the seven steps consistently used by those who solve problems most creatively. By taking an analytical approach, Nadler and Hibino discovered that there is a specific method used to successfully make decisions that is both teachable and duplicable. This program is now presented to you in this volume.
"Finally, we have a beautifully lucid book which tells you how to get from here to there—how to get to 'excellence.'"
                —Warren Bennis, co-author of Leaders
"I've used Breakthrough Thinking now for a few years and have found it transformative. It really is a different paradigm of thinking that leads to powerful changes in the way I look at problems and how I practice organizational change."
—William Chandon, Organizational Competency Building, Corporate Knowledge Program, Computer Sciences Corporation
"I have had a 'breakthrough experience' after reading Breakthrough Thinking. I want to thank both Professor Nadler and Professor Hibino for the thought-provoking ideas presented in the book."
                —Dick Keller, president, Kellerco

                4 out of 5 stars Not quite a breakthrough.......2004-01-18

It's fair to say that the breakthrough touted by the authors occured quite some time back - I don't think that any of the 7 principles suggested could be said to be new or even that they are brought together in a new framework.
Regardless, if you haven't used these principles before then it is likely to be something of a breakthrough. The authors present a remarkably well planned overview of the steps needed to come to creative solutions to problems.
Many readers are likely to find hints of De Bono, Senge and even some NLP in the reading. That shouldn't detract from the book though - it brings some rather disparate structures together to achieve an extremely beneficial approach to thinking and problem solving.
4 stars because it could have been edited down by 50 pages without detracting from the message.

5 out of 5 stars Many thanks to Professors Nadler and Hibino.......2003-01-07

This is an excellent book. It is well written. The authors have excellent credentials and convincingly outline the seven principles of creative problem solving in the most lucid terms.

Readers will find that many of the individual ideas, concepts, considerations and perspectives are familiar. However, as Proust stated, the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Professors Nadler and Hibino show that you, and any group that you are part of, can significantly increase your chances of achieving breakthroughs if you adopt a certain approach to solving problems and making decisions. It is a purpose-directed approach. The focus is on the solution, not the problem.

They proceed to outline this approach in some detail. It includes a holistic set of steps to guide your use of the seven principles. They also describe a number of optional tools. When adapted to your own style and circumstances, and used in context, these tools really do maximise your chances of achieving breakthroughs e.g.

                · `Exploration and expansion of purposes' enables you to creatively find the right problem to work on

                · `Solution after next' helps to unfetter the team's creativity, to rise above current limitations, wrong assumptions and misconceptions - whether conscious or subconscious - and to ensure that today's solution is future-oriented and innovative

                · `System matrix' facilitates a comprehensive consideration of all aspects of a solution thus maximising the chances of successful implementation

The thinking skills outlined in this book and ensuing practice can serve you well for the rest of your life. These skills are so fundamental, they can be beneficially applied in countless ways and in countless situations - both business and personal.

I first read this book six months ago and have no hesitation in recommending it.

                2 out of 5 stars Nothing new!.......2002-11-30

This book is incredibly tedious to read. I don't agree with previous reviewers that its worth the slog. There was nothing new or innovative in the concepts extolled in the book - this is just another methodology to get you from A to B (or maybe A to C if you adopt the Solution After Next principle). Like all methodologies, you can very quickly lose sight of where you're going because there's so much involved in working your way through the 7 principles. Also, didn't anyone else find the idea of the System Matrix overkill? I mean you could spend months working on a System Matrix before you got to move onto the next stage - an onerous task in the extreme. If you want to read this book, go ahead - it won't do you any harm. You may feel as excited about it as previous reviewers here. I guess all I'm saying is that its not for everybody.

5 out of 5 stars A Book Every Problem Solver and Decision Maker Should Read.......2002-05-09

Stephen Covey observed the main problem we face often is not the problem itself but how we see it. Breakthrough Thinking, like Why Didn't I Think of That? - Think the Unthinkable, changes the way you approach problems by challenging your old perspectives and giving you new tools for obtaining deeper, clearer insights into problems and decisions at hand. This ia a book to place on the shelf where you keep your most prized works, the ones you reread over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Solve Problems More Effectively.......2001-06-20

I'd have to agree with the majority of other reviews here: this book is definitely a "reader and keeper." Yes, it is somewhat hard to get through; the writing style isn't easy, but it changed the way I thought about projects in my business. The seven principles have broad applicability in solving life's problems. I first read this book in 1991 and I've re-read it a couple of times since to refresh myself on the concepts.
