This is a really great book. It gives me many good ideas for meals of any oriental delights. The pictures are so real that I feel like gobbling up the pages. Each dish sounds sooooo good, I can't wait to learn how to cook it. And the directions are so clear that I, the worst cook in the world, can learn it. I totally recommend this book to everybody!

I work in the business and I have read and struggled through a lot of books on options and other derivatives. This one stands out as a true gem. It is practical, yet thorough. It is accessible to the interested layman, but it doesn't condescend or skimp on key concepts. The questions at the end of each chapter allow you to solidify the concepts explained in the chapters without spending your whole weekend on them. The software that comes with it lets you play with the concepts in real time until you grasp them intuitively, not just theoretically: concepts such as the "greeks"--delta, gamma, theta, and vega, hedging, the relationship between options and the underlying instruments, and so on. Don't be misled by the reasonable price. (Books in this genre usually start at over $50.) You can slog through a lot of options books and log a lot of hours, but I'll be you get more out of this per minute invested than any other book on options.

The novel was very informative in the area of successuful leveraged buyouts. This novel would be an excellent textbook for students in business programs. In fact, some college finance groups, found it better than the actual prescribed textbook, in identifying the key factors involved in a leverage buyouts and the examples brought the information to a more understandable level. The company examples used allowed a case style approach, which is what most business schools use at present. The chapters explained, in detail, the process to evaluate LBO's and determine whether they are acceptable or not. It was an excellent, well written, informative book!

Nehru: The Invention of India .......2006-08-25

This book, written by Shashi Tharoor, an official candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as Secretary General of the United Nations, focuses on one of India's leaders and its fight for independence, Jawaharlal Nehru. While in India over the summer, I picked up this book because I wanted to learn more about my native country's First Prime Minister, his ideals, and how he came to become such a great man revered by so many today. An extraordinary individual he was no doubt. Someone who refused to remain complacent despite his high social class and who worked hard for everything he achieved despite great loss and adversity. Yet after reading this book, I discovered a leader who was more than just that. Nehru, despite his immortal legacy, was always human, with idealistic and inevitably contradicting political and religious philosophies, with strong love and compassion for all, and with amazing contributions to what India is today.
Shashi Tharoor does not only approach Nehru as the subject of his biography, but almost as a character in a novel with heroic qualities and noticeable flaws. Anecdotes all the way from Nehru's childhood to his protests of British rule end up driving this work. One that stood out showed one of Nehru's defining qualities as a man and leader: taking responsibility for his actions. One day thinking that father Motilial Nehru would not be using a second pen lying on his desk, Jawaharlal took it for one of his lessons. When Motilal found out that the pen was missing and that his eldest son had taken it, Jawaharlal receives a beating he would never forget. Tharoor writes "He learned much from this experience:...not to lay claim to what was not his, not to conceal evidence of his own wrong doing, if ever he were to do wrong--and never to assume he could simply `get away with it'"(7). Not surprisingly, Nehru was jailed at total of seven years during India's fight for independence from Britain all because of his courage and responsibility, engraved by his father.
Nehru's father Motilal also instills into his son many secular, democratic ideals which become the very core of Jawaharlal's beliefs for a new, independent India and still stand in part today. Once India finally gained independence in 1947, it was still much divided across religious lines. Jawaharlal opposed a partition and instead pushed for a secular, united India which thrived on democratic ideals. His ironically God-like presence had the power of suspending Hindu mobs of millions against Muslims.
Tharoor brings both Nehru's successes and failures to the fore and intertwines them nicely. His love for his family and for his India, his desire to educate the poor and idolizing Indian masses in democracy are all highly admirable qualities. Yet Nehru's failures especially his socialist economics platforms which brought only economic stagnation, poverty, and corruption are also analyzed.
Nevertheless, Nehru is a big reason why India is what it is today: the world's largest democracy and growing economic superpower. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a glimpse into this man's life, his ideals, and his India.

Nehru and the World.......2006-08-18

An excellent and much needed book. The major works on Nehru were written several decades ago. I will use this in my graduate
course. It is written in a clear and straight forward style
that makes it easy to read. I particularly appreciate Tharoor's
picture of the power of Nehru in India and internationally.
Nehru's tremendous influence on the decolonial movement is
often forgotten today. If there is any weakness, I would have
liked Tharoor to have explored more Gandhi's influence on Nehru.

Wonderful Reading Experience.......2005-09-20

Shashi Tharoor's latest book is a most enjoyable interpretive history of Nehru's amazing life. I felt as if Tharoor was travelling with me as I read in trains and planes, talking directly to me. He brought me to tears when Nehru died -- very hard to do using non-fiction. A delightful book -- warm, generous and globally aware, it's a wonderful reading experience. Tharoor gives us a better context for understanding a contradictory statesman, and made me wonder what Nehru and the freedom fighters would think of India and the world today. My only criticism: it's too short!

Thin........2005-04-13

Hits all the high points. Tharoor's occasional protestations of objectivity about Nehru ring hollow; this book is objective only in tone. Nehru's contradictions are glossed over as if merely a source of amusement, but Jinna is treated as a pathological cynic, and the British are alternately inept and reactionary. Tharoor's treatment of Churchill is as harsh as it is shallow. This book reads very quickly, and is good for people who want a quick bio of Nehru. For people who want a real examination of the man, look elsewhere.

An Adoptive Mom's Perspecitve.......2007-08-14

As a Mom of a daughter that we adopted at birth, I was interested in the author's feelings and memories from the point of choosing adoption until reuniting with her daughter. This book depicts a beautiful story that is refreshing in light of all the negetive adoption reunion stories that we hear in the media. I know that this book was written for birth moms and the author expresses her feelings about being a birth mom extremley well. That being the case, I still feel that this would be a wonderful book for adoptive parents and their extended families to read, as it gives you a glimpse into the emotions and feelings of birth moms and is a good way to begin thinking how you, as an adoptive parent, will handle the experience when your child wants to find their biological parents. It is a quick read and a heart warming one at that!

A Positive Light on Adoption.......2007-05-12

This was a very positive, spiritual look on adoption from a birthmother's point of view. It was a very easy, fast read. I enjoyed it. The only reason for the four stars and not five is, I wish the author would have written a little bit more about the feelings of loss & mourning... just a bit deeper. It is a huge part of adoption. Otherwise, it was a VERY positive look on the situation.

Miracles is at once honest and fresh. The voice of adolescnce can be hard to capture, but Sawicki nails it in the characters of introvert Darla and her dauntless counterpart, Andy. The story revolves around Darla's distant relationship with her career-minded parents and the surrogate family relationship which develops in its place. Through her inclusion in Andy's family, Darla is able to establish a sense of belonging, always just beyond her grasp with her own parents, which allows her to form a more sure and even sense of herself. Mrs. Scully and her family teach Darla about the use of "miracles", the celebration of the ordinary, to cool the fiery uproar of temper, family discord, and adolescent angst. Darla is a good student, eager to grow. But in the end, the roles of teacher and student shift, and it is Darla herself who is called on to demonstrate that the small often neglected little miracles of everday life are sometimes all we have left to cling to when life leads us to the brink of despair.

As a busy mother of two young children, and at present 9 months pregnant, I seldom have the time or energy to read novels. After hearing about this book, I decided to make time. I am so glad that I did! Once I opened the book, I could not put it down. The story is about Lori, the baby who can only be described as "God's baby" as John refers to her. She had multiple odds against her, yet miraculously through her many painful surgeries and obstacles continues to shine her bright smile at the world. John's insight into his family's journey is both heartwrenching and inspirational. He describes a world of uncertainty about his daughters survival, describing treatments and medical interventions that are the things of parents nightmares, yet all the while he does so with dignity and strength. I have great admiration for Johns talent as an author and a parent. Thank you for sharing your story, I wish your family well.

Unbelieveable Story.......2002-01-25

I knew I wanted to read this book when I read the synopsis. It surpassed my expectations. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. I have never been more touched by a story. Lori is a special child, who was fortunate enough to be born to special parents.

Lori was never expected to live and yet she defied all the odds. She endured operations and setbacks that were unbelieveable. Yet, she continued to survive and maintain her smile and enjoy the simple things in life.

This is a beautifully written story of adversity, hope, and most of all - love. It allows the reader into the world of pediatric hospitals and neonatal units that see miracles and heartbreak on a daily basis. I found it to be so inspirational, especially since it was written from a man's point of view. I highly recommend this book.

Eye opening life changing message.......2001-12-26

I read Lori's Miracle and was impressed by the telling of a story that seemed to be about a family with a child who had medical problem after medical problem and how they were able to cope with it all. But I learned towards the end of the book that this was only the custodial type part of the telling. The real miracle was in how this child has come to be the miracle in the family's life because of the lessons they have learned from her. Lori is retarded and the lessons she has taught the family have impacted their lives more than anything they could have learned in a book or been instructed about by learned scholars. Lori teaches what God wants us all to know: to listen to each other and love and attend to one other. This is what I, too, learned from John White's excellent telling of Lori's Miracle. This book will move the reader to tears and give them something so profoundly simple to take away from it that I believe my life has been truly blessed because I chose to read it.

John White's book is a deeply moving story that chronicles the life and death experiences revolving around the birth and early life of Lori, God's special child.

Lori was not supposed to make it but when medicine and God combine their best efforts, Lori lives. However, it is not to a life of ease. It is a life spent in neo-natal nurseries and recovery rooms where her parents walk through the pain and the recovery with their little one. Ultimately they learn that the miracle of Lori is not her survival but that she is the celebration of the Divine in the least of us.

John says of Lori: "In her simplicity...[she] embodies the music of the universe. In her silence can be heard the voice of God (p. 272).
