Good Stuff.......2006-05-26
I bought this book so I could learn how to make some of the stuff that are in the resturants that Andy set up. FOr the most part they ended up tasting fairly similar to the stuff at the resturant. Some of the stuff is hard to make, but over all the book is filled with lots of delicious interesting unique recipies. Highly reccommended, not to mention the book is a very easy fun read
Fearless is definitely a good title.......2006-04-28
I absolutely love this cookbook. I think Andy is a genius. Four recipes come to mind immediately as EXCEPTIONAL:
* Basil-encrusted pork with corn relish
* Fried-chicken with green onion gravy
* Kung Pao shrimp
* Margarita cake
OK, now I'm hugry. That said, I wouldn't recommend this for the more casual chefs. Andy has some unique flavor combinations which are much harder adjusting if you don't have everything you need, or if you want to fit them to your taste.
I have been redeemed...........2005-08-30
by the Meatloaf, Blueberry Bread Pudding and Fontina Tater recipes found within this book. My reputation for Sunday dinner in our family has been spotty at best. The instructions made everything so simple and while I was able to knock it out in no time at all, the results suggested I had been cooking all day. Also, I mixed a few of the rubs for later use-the bbq one is particulary versatile and I've used it on a dozen or so grilled produce/meat. Fantastic cookbook you will refer to often_and a portion of profits go to great cause-what's not to love.
No cookbook should be this exciting.......2005-04-26
My husband and I love to cook, but we've had little spare time lately. When we have managed to cook, it's been mostly simple stuff. This year we took a four-day weekend to celebrate our anniversary, and we decided to cook up a true feast on Monday. This seemed the perfect opportunity to test out Andy Husbands and Joe Yonan's "The Fearless Chef: Innovative Recipes from the Edge of American Cuisine." Reading through the recipes, they looked like exactly our kind of food; we couldn't wait to try them out.
One of the recipes turned out absoluteley spectacularly--a soy glaze that we put over noodles. Other recipes were good but not great; a mango and cabbage salad and some beans both tasted a bit unbalanced in flavor. In particular, the beans tasted overwhelmingly of the beer that went into them (I'm sure some would see that as a plus!).
Dessert is where the excitement came in. We made a bananas Foster-like recipe that involved a full cup of rum (I had to triple-check the amount because I found it so hard to believe). When we opened the oven at the end of the baking time I heard a whooshing sound and the slam of the oven door. Then I smelled burnt hair. I whipped around, and when my husband turned to face me all I could say was, "umm, you should look in a mirror." His eyebrows and eyelashes, and the front row of his hair, had all been burned partially off. A gout of flame had apparently shot straight out of the oven when he opened it up.
Nothing like that has ever happened to us before.
Dessert was still edible, believe it or not, but once again, just like the beans, the taste of alcohol was so overwhelming that I almost couldn't taste anything else. And no matter how much I love that soy glaze, I can't quite get past that fireball.
Daring & delicious.......2005-01-18
I am so glad to get a taste of New England here in my home state of Texas. The recipes are exciting and different, and the encouragement Joe and Andy offer provide the much needed push to get creative in the kitchen. From the fried pork chops with maple/red pepper sauce to the nectarine and lamb kabobs, I'm thrilled w/ the spice of life this book provides.

Product Description
When the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) was passed in 1974, the world of pensions was very different from today. Then, most pensions were packaged as defined benefit plans--the employer guaranteed a certain level of income to the employee on retirement. But from the 1980s on, in part because of ERISAs regulatory structure, but also because of job mobility and other factors, pension coverage increasingly meant defined contribution plans, with the burden of investment and outcome placed on the worker. For the most part, however, pension coverage has remained stagnant since the early 1980s, many low-wage workers have no pensions, and many small employers do not provide such retirement options. The Evolving Pension System, divided into three parts, examines the foundations and the future of Americas private pension system. It provides a broad overview of the underlying characteristics and economic effects of existing pension policy, as well as alternative views on how public policy toward pensions should evolve in the future. Part one examines the goals, features, and the effects of legislation affecting pensions, including the dramatic shift from defined benefit to defined contribution plans. Part two discusses how pensions affect the economic picture, and part three offers some prescriptions for broad-based pension reform.

Cute New Children's Book.......2004-11-12
Clovis Crawfish is getting ready for bed as the sun sets on the bayou, and the brothers Cigale-de-Bois begin warming up for their wonderful nightly concerto, when a lovely, yellow creature lands on Clovis' mud-house. Clovis quickly realizes that sleep will have to wait. The creature introduces herself as Silvie Sulphur - a member of the family of butterflies - and informs Clovis that she's looking for a home. Always looking to help, Clovis gathers a group of his friends to find a wonderful home for Silvie, but just as she's settling in, an unexpected storm sends everyone searching for cover. Clovis has no idea where Silvie has disappeared to, but with his quick-thinking, Silvie soon turns up safe and sound. However, now it's time to rebuild Clovis' mud home before the celebrations can begin.
I love animal stories, so the CLOVIS CRAWFISH series quickly captured my attention. Mary Alice Fontenot has done a lovely job of creating a book series for children that teaches them about wildlife, while at the same time teaches them French phrases. Add the fact that Julie Dupre Buckner's illustrations are absolutely adorable, and you've got yourself a winner. Overall, this is an adorable new children's book. Especially for those who live along the Louisiana Bayou.

A truly horrible story is told very well in this memoir of family tragedy and recovery from life- threatening cancer. After leaving Saturday Night Live, comedienne Julia Sweeney was newly divorced and looking forward to a new life in Los Angeles. But her optimism was shattered when she learned that her brother had been diagnosed with cancer. He moved in with her, and before long Sweeney found out that she was suffering from a rare form of cervical cancer. The story of Sweeney, her brother, and her parents (whose moving in with her gave odd comic relief to all the health problems) is a moving tale, tragedy leavened with moments of good humor and uplifting insight.
Book Description
1995 was, for Julia Sweeney, a truly horrible year. She got a divorce (amicable), bought a small bungalow in Hollywood, and looked forward to a life that said, "Here dwells a happily single young woman!" But then the ax fell. Her younger brother Mike was diagnosed with terminal cancer and moved in with her. Her parents came to be with Mike--and moved in with her. Suddenly her tiny bungalow for one was filled to the rafters with Sweeneys. Here she was sleeping on her pull-out sofa bed while her father walked around, his Walkman on all day and her mother marveled at Julia's lack of such staples as stroganoff mixes. Every day was spent bringing Mike to and from chemotherapy, every evening watching "Chicago Hope" or "E.R." Julia was now on seriously intimate terms with the people she had spent half a lifetime growing up away from.Just weeks before Mike died, Julia was diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer--what Mike called her "sympathy cancer"--and within days of burying her brother, she underwent a radical hysterectomy, beginning her own journey through "the International House of Cancer." From these Job-like travails, Julia has written a remarkably funny and touching memoir about a family in extremis that manages to persevere with humor, grace, and love.
Customer Reviews:
Cute and Light.......2007-04-18
Julia Sweeny seems from interviews to be a likeable person, and her writing is similarly winsome. This autobiography is about turning lemons into lemonade, and Sweeny wrings humor from the chaos that ensues when family members band together for support in time of trouble. She does a good job of conveying both the sweetness and low-level eccentricity of her parents, who moved into her tiny California home to minister to Julia and her brother Mike, both of whom contracted cancer around the same time (Julia survived hers after a hysterectomy). That Julia and Mike referred to the home as the International House of Cancer, and obsessed over whether their cat had cancer, too, is an example of how they tried to positively spin the positively horrible.
My guess is that the anecdotes in "God Said `Ha!'" came across better in Sweeny's stage production than in this book, which is really light in content. The font is huge and the paragraphs spaced out widely, as if to help the story reach the minimum length required for print. Still, it's cleverly told, and nicely framed against a back story of how Sweeny and friend Quentin Tarantino unwittingly kicked off Sweeny's awful year of family turmoil by getting "lucky rocks" off the coast of Inish Turk, Ireland (Sweeny later returned hers).
As an aside, I first heard about this story during an interview Sweeny gave discussing, among other things, her atheism. Some of those seeds are planted in "God Said `Ha!'," but nowhere nearly as overtly as the title. In fact, Sweeny's tone in the book alternates between anger at her religion and admiration for nuns she remembered from Catholic school as sources of strength and quirky humor. The atheism must have come later after much soul-searching.
god said ha, i say nah........2007-03-09
it's got heart, but it gets a little too personal to remain of universal interest, unless you know julia sweeney or knew her brother. she is witty and has great delivery & timing, but i expected a bit more humor and a little less sappiness. i had heard an interview in which she discussed her take on religion and how she fell "out of touch" with (her) god, and the comments she made in the interview where awesome, thought provoking. i misunderstood that this dvd was similar to the "routine" she performed on the radio interview. the dvd would be a great way to ease into the mourning period if someone close to you was dying of cancer, but still active in many ways.
Thoroughly Enjoyable.......2007-01-22
Thoroughly enjoyable and insightful observation on the human condition. Poignantly demonstrates how fine the line is between comedy and tragedy, and how inseparable the two can be. Helps explain Ms. Sweeney's mood in her later fantastic work, "Letting Go of God>'
God Said Ha is Unforgettable.......2006-10-22
When I tell people to rent or buy God Said Ha, naturally they think I am being irreverent! Such is not the case.
This one woman show based on the true story of Julia and her family is poignant, hilarious and heartbreaking.
After Julia's divorce and relocation to California, privacy seems to be a hard thing to fine. Her brother had passed out in a public building and was rushed to the hospital. Not having medical insurance because of poor health, her brother had been going to the clinic where his disease was not diagnosed.
Pretty soon Julia's parents are living in her small house and chaos prevails. Not only is Julia taking care of her brother but dealing with the inevitable problems of too many people in too little a space.
Julia's brother is in the end stages of cancer. Before long Julia also develops cancers and requires a hysterctomy. Will the chaos ever end!
But Julia's great since of humor about her situation shines through the entire one woman show.
After seeing the show I also read the book. I would recommend this as a follow up of this great one woman show.
I must also add that without saying so, this is the best recommendation for legislation for health insurance for everyone!
touching, but.......2005-06-12
touching, but, she seems to lack in depth. interesting, though
i would recommend reading something by c.s. lewis

Customer Reviews:
Forgotten History.......2007-01-03
When I initially read this book just after it was published I called the author and thanked him for writing the book. Most of my mother's family was killed in Ark Angel, Russia and my mother grandmother, and great-aunt were all interned in many of the same places that were described in the book. It is well researched and should be necessary reading for all school aged children. it is both inspiring and educational.
Brings dark times and events vividly to life.......2001-03-16
Exiled To Siberia: A Polish Child's WWII Journey is the engaging biography of a ten-year-old Polish boy deported by the Soviets at the outbreak of World War II. From Henryk Birecki's childhood in a Polish village to his ultimate integration into American society after the war, the reader is treated to a candid and informative story of the hardships and cruelties brought about by the forcible deportation of Polish men, women and children to the bleak and hazardous interior of the Soviet Union. Thousands of Poles died during transport and in the penal and forced labor camps, remote settlements, and the Kolkhozes to which they were banished. After the end of the war Henryk and his sister made it out of the Soviet Union (where his mother died), through Iran and Iraq, then Mexico, and finally to America. Exiled To Siberia is sobering reading and brings those times and events vividly to life for new generations of readers to know and understand the inhumanity and tragedy that afflicted the civilian populace of Eastern Europe during those dark and deadly days.
A facinating perspective on a heartbreaking story.......2001-01-24
This story of the forgotten victims of WWII is told from a unique perspective. Two friends--the author and the subject--were personally touched by the war in very different ways. One, a german child, victimized only by the disemination of misinformation and, the other, a polish child, victimized both physically and psychologically, enslaved by the Russian allies, separated from family, seizes the opportunity to search for better life for himself and his sister. The author artfully intertwines history and real life experiences. The story is, in many parts, heartbreaking and, in all parts, facinating.
