For Those Serious About Eating Healthy.......2001-02-21

His Minimax series on TV inspired me to try this book. The recipes I have served to guests have been met with differing results. At a dinner party, they didn't feel the Cheesecake with Figs was appetizing at all, while the Swedish Meatballs were a Hit. The Sloppy Joe recipe with ground turkey and bulgar wheat flavored with de-alcoholized wine (I used real stuff) is the very best I've ever had!

What I especially enjoy about this book is the wonderful commentary he gives on prep hints and blow-by-blow how to cook. The cost estimate and time estimate are neat features as well.

Great color photos adorn the recipes.

Improving on Favorites.......2000-01-18

This book provides some good techniques for reducing fat in cooking without sacrificing flavor. My family especially likes the versions of Rogan Josh, Moussaka, and Spaghetti Carbonara. The techniques, such as lower fat ways to thicken, or lower fat ways to handle eggplant, are great, and easy to apply to other dishes. Full nutritional info is given, both for the "classic" versions of the dish, and the "Minimax" recipes, so that those trying to follow a careful eating plan can do so.

This book chronicles the merger wave during the mid seventies to the late eighties. The book looks not only at the raiders, but also at other featured players in the takeover game: the investment bankers, attorneys, and arbitragers, considered the main personalities in the takeover game. You will find many figures depicted in this book.

Author Robert Slater was able to bring these players to life with inside descriptions of their lives. Profiled in these pages are the leading figures in the American takeover field. Titans like T. Boone Pickens, Carl Icahn, Saul Steinberg, and Ted Turner. As well as such behind the scenes personalities as lawyers Martin Lipton and Joseph Flom. Investment bankers Joseph Perella and Bruce Wasserstein, famous for staying in the game, gained notoriety by going after clients even after they committed to someone else.

A special chapter is dedicated to zooming in on the infamous arbitrager, Ivan Boesky. Who later on in the book clarifies the difference between a raider and an arbitrager by concluding that raiders are not arbitragers, they are party principles seeking control of companies, as opposed to impartial stock market operators, such as his self , who are basically interested in a spread as the reward.

Raiders who understand the takeover game realized the sum total of certain companies were worth less than its parts and believed that a company could not enrich itself from a lawsuit; it should only emerge whole. With this so-called credo, they found a reason to keep management on its toes. Out of this audacity and growing phenomenon, management and company boards employed a whole series of defensive tactics, ranging from the poison pill to the highly popular leveraged buyout. Nevertheless, the raiders seemed to know better. Each effort has its own problems, its own solutions. A raider who made a cash offer with an enticing premium knew that stockholders were not going to let a board of directors get in the way of making good money.

Aside from stepping over a few minor inconsistencies in historical content, this book will undeniably arouse your attention.

Memoir Of A Good Man.......2005-04-26

William Ragdsale Cannon was not your everyday kind of prelate and his autobiography pretty much sums up what we all thought of him as a man and as a religious figure. Anybody who dropped by Cannon Chapel at Georgia's Emory University made it a point to see if "Billy Cannon" was presiding, no matter if you were Jimmy Carter, or Pope John Paul II, or just Joe Schmoe, he had a wise word and a prayer for everyone. In a way he was kind of a Hollywood preacher, and his book makes no bones about his attraction to the spotlight. His famous friends made him feel good about himself and good about the Lord, and so everyone wound up a winner. He always joked about LSU's Billy Cannon, the Heisman Trophy winner with whom he was sometimes mistaken. Often enough credit card companies would send him approved credit cards with big, big limits, and obviously they did not know that he didn't have a big salary but subsisted on whatever the Lord and the Methodists would provide. He would joke that the disgraced football player Billy Cannon would wind up paying all of his bills, and he hinted that in this way poor Billy would wind up slipping in through Heaven's back door after all. He wasn't a joker per se, but as anyone knows who sat through any of his sermons, he knew how to leaven the serious word of Christ with a little myrrh and frankincense.

I can attest that Emory was a tough place to work at unless you loved the very young people, some of them quite immature, who attended college there, and Bishop Cannon tells several stories about his counseling the troubled youth of Georgia, some quite moving, in this many-layered autobioghraphy. Published only after Cannon's 1997 death, MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION is no Jane Wyman-Rock Hudson love fest, but instead a readable, if rather dull, story of a man who loved Georgia, Christ, and the a good meal served up hot, as well as one of the most unforgettable characters ever to grace a bishopric.

Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic, as the world remembers, and Amelia Earhart, who never completed her round-the-world flight with navigator Frederick Noonan in their twin-engine Lockheed, became a legend. Yet the contemporary of these two pioneers in early aviation, Wiley Post--the pilot who circled the earth alone in a single-engine plane, who flew at sub-stratospheric altitudes and discovered the jet stream, and who designed the prototypes for astronauts' space suits--has been largely, and perhaps officially, ignored in history and American folklore. Until now. Based on thirty years of research, this biography by Bryan and Frances Sterling reconstructs the adventurous life of Wiley Post from his poverty-stricken boyhood on a farm in Texas to a certificate from the Sweeney Auto School in Kansas City, Missouri, to a brief career in armed robbery that sent him to prison in 1921. It was in the oil fields of Oklahoma that ex-con Post lost his left eye, a handicap that he did not allow to impede his career as a parachute jumper, stunt pilot, barnstormer, and record-setting ace aviator. Post's incredible career ended in 1935, with a fatal crash in Barrow, Alaska, that also killed his passenger, the great American humorist Will Rogers. As in their comprehensive account of the enigmatic Wiley Post's life, the Sterlings leave no official record or government file unturned in their thoroughgoing investigation of the mystery that has long surrounded this maverick aviator's death.

A very thorough account.......2002-12-09

This biography is carefully researched, with the footnotes where they belong--at the foot of the page. The authors have done a lot of research and their telling of the dramatic life and feats of Wiley Post makes for a fascinating book. The account of the two round-the-world flights is full of awesome momnets. There is a lot of technical flying data, and for the non-flyer this gets a bit long, as does the exhaustive account of the events following the crash on Aug 15, 1935. From the time that Wiley Post dies there are still 120 pages in the book, but much is interesting and the account of the world-wide grieving is poignant and well-done. There are good illustrations, tho also I would have liked a map of the the area where the crash occurred. But overall, this book tells the story well, and is well worth reading if you are interested in the life of a daring and gutsy early flyer, who should be remembered.

Well-written and thorough, this memoir offers a peak into life in the 1950s and 1960s through the eyes of a young girl.
Whether one lived there or not, or even during that time, the book captures the essence of how things were then, when everything was so much less complicated.

Memoir Written with Warmth and Humor.......2006-09-22

This charming memoir is more than a story about a particular place and time--it's a story about growing up, about living in a city, about American middle class life. Now, with Stuyvesant Town a hot item in the news, Demas's smart and accurate book has particular value to anyone interested in New York City's future. This is an important look at what's at stake now in urban politics, but at the same time it's a great pleasure to read--filled with wonderful details and written with humor and warmth.

Good Book.......2002-06-07

This book is wonderfully written. It tells a great story in amusing and moving detail of normal family life- the family life most of us had. The description of Stuyvesant Town is mostly accurate. I grew up there in the '70s and '80s and my family and many friends are still there. There are some details that are just wrong (or at least are wrong about the Stuyvesant Town of the '70s and '80s)and keep me from rating this a 5--the author's one sentence slam against Republicans notwithstanding. The residents of Stuyvesant Town mostly were Catholic , not Jewish as claimed by the author. ... I knew none who did. Overall, a good book about the relationship among a child and her parents. Stuyvesant Town residents, past and present, will appreciate discussions such as the longing for a dog in a place where cats weren't even allowed in apartments. Males who grew up in Stuyvesant Town will certainly wish they could read about Little League and playing sports in playgrounds 9 and 11, which is not discussed in this book. A good book.

Another Stuyvesant Kid.......2002-05-03

I was excited to read this as I too grew up in Stuyvesant Town. It was disappointing. The author presented her experiences as indicative of all, and actually made some factual errors. For example she stated "the majority of residents were Jewish". It not only is untrue, but on the face of it would seem highly unlikely. Why would this development be so out of kilter with the population at large? She also indicated that most of the residents had cleaning women. Not to my knowledge, though I bet my mother and the mothers of my friends (and those of my 6 siblings) wished that were true. I may be nit-picking, but since I found the writing less than engrossing, I found the inaccuracies hard to excuse. It may have taken me back, but I kept wanting to ask the author what in heavens name she was talking about. It was unfortunate that the author didn't present this as her reminiscences rather than "the" story of growing up in Stuvesant Town. I suppose any of the many Stuy Town kids (or former residents) would enjoy a quick read of this, but it probably wouldn't be of much interest to anyone else.

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL.......2000-10-22

What an absolutely delightful book! THIS is what the childhoods were really like for most of us who grew up in the 40s and 50s. I grew up in suburban California but I still identified with the author in almost every emotion, every situation she describes, even though I had always thought those poor kids who grew up in the high rise apartments in New York were really missing out. Not true! I read a lot of memoirs, and I have to say I am so tired of DYSfunctional parents, DYSfunctional situations, etc. This book is like a breath of fresh air. I don't mean to imply that all was peachy keen, but the upsetting situations the author faced were not built into huge life happenings that she was going to take a lifetime to deal with. She had a good childhood. She made a good childhood for herself. She should be very proud of this book and I hope it gets more publicity so it won't be lost in the deluge of memoirs.
