This is a book about business, about life, about you and about me. With humor, intelligence, wit and wisdom, Rubin and Gold offer the type of teachings that will make a difference in how you approach work and life. Become a Zentrepreneur and see your place in the world as you were meant to experience it. Learn how to rediscover your passion, set goals, take risks, confront failure, enjoy success. I have only one bad thing to say about Success At Life, I wish it were 100 pages longer!

THE BEST ADVICE.......2004-06-10

Success At Life is the best motivational business/life book I have come across. As a follower of Tony Robbins personal power dictums, I found Rubin and Gold's philosophies and experiences to be more real world and authentic. This is a book for realists that does away with the usual self-help babble presenting instead a hip, witty style that provides you with a want to and will do attitude for success. The book's underlying message is that we all need to learn how to enjoy the journey-Success At Life it is a great ride.

Don't bother.......2004-05-21

I was forced to read this book and write an online review about it by Ron Rubin himself. Not unlike most silver spoon-fed men, he considers himself to be a lot more important and wise than he actually is. If you happen to be one of the unfortuante few who read this thing, you'll likely find that the guy is just a cheap salesman who happened to be born into money. Congrats, Ron! Thanks for the advice!

As a graduate business student it is refreshing to read a book which focuses not only on making money, but also on enjoying life. I found the book to be both practical and motivating. It makes you ask yourself the question, "Why aren't I doing that?" The advice on finding a mentor is invaluable. A great read!

Great, easy read. The authors' passion is obvious and the book articulates well how your attitude is critical to catching and living your dream. You have the ability to change your destiny and this book will give you the motivation to take that step.

This is by far the most thorough account of touring the Texas wine country you will find. I was completely impressed at the detail provided for each and every winery including a description each of the wines they produce. Also includes lodging and restaurant recommendations along the way.

There are many reasons to like this book.......2002-12-08

This book is highly informative, entertaining, and (must be) the definitive guide book for visiting any or all Texas wineries.

The informative aspect is not limited to a textbook about Texas grapes, wines and wineries, though it certainly could be used that way. It is much more. The Introduction is an excellent summary for novice or seasoned wine lovers--telling us about varieties of Texas grapes, terminology people use to describe wines and wine-making, and, of course, much information about how to taste wine so you can compare one wine with another and converse with others about wines if that is something you want to do.

Marshall dishes out detail so neatly that you hardly realize how much you are learning while you are engrossed in the stories of the wine-makers, their passions, and their products. Some of the difficulties they describe make you want to cry, but most are more humorous than defeating.

It is not surprising that Robert Mondavi would be so complementary about Marshall and his book. I think it is a book that readers will want to tell their friends about before they buy Texas wine or visit the wineries. I will keep it handy when in Texas as a useful reference book.

An entertaining read and a useful guide book.......2002-11-23

There are many interesting things to do in Texas, but who knew visiting wineries might be one of them? I heard about this book from a friend and ordered two copies, one for me and one as a gift. Wes Marshall gives us an entertaining read, not just facts and figures. There are interesting little stories about the various wineries that make you not only want to try the wines, but visit the wine makers on your next vacation.

I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.

This book offers a new explanation of why commodity processors and dealers use futures markets. It argues that they use futures contracts as part of an implicit method of borrowing and lending commodities, contrary to the accepted view of dealers averse to the fluctuating value of their inventories wanting insurance against price risk. Employing models developed to explain the demand for money, this book demonstrates that risk-neutral dealers have sufficient reason to use futures markets. Moreover, the book exposes major internal inconsistencies in the accepted explanation. Rather than insurance markets, the appropriate analogy is the money market, which is the point the book establishes through discussing actual loan markets in commodities. This insight into the function of futures markets is then used to explain how futures prices for different delivery dates express a term structure of commodity-specific interest rates and why futures markets flourish for some types of commodities and not for others.

Hard Times In the 1920s and 30s.......2007-01-02

One thing that poverty didn't diminish is Woodruff's powers of recall. Though, as soon as he becomes literate, one senses he'll inexorably transcend his meagre beginnings which ring most vividly in this tale. I loved the regional patois as much as the rising political conscience of the working class boy. The years roll by with the daily grind, humilities accompanying the unjust disenfranchisement of workers; Dickensian conditions that were worse in Lancanshire than other industrial zones. Woodruff's effortless prose is as tough as his father's persistent presence and as nuanced as his mum's mercurial mood shifts. Fortunately for readers,'Nab's End' is no end, but a beginning to further tales from post adolesence. Having just close the covers on Roy McFadyen's, 'at A Cost', I opened Woodruff to discover a parallel story in times bedevilled by poverty and dire economic depression. If you want to visit the comparison and find, at a pinch, an even more extraordinary childhood,'At a Cost' is published and distributed by its author @ 15 Maryann Street, Golden Beach, Queensland, Australia 4551.

This really is a superb social history.......2005-02-13

I came upon this book after hearing brief snippets of it serialised BBC Radio 4 and the World Service.
It had added interest for me as I know Blackburn (at least modern Blackburn) very well, it was later a surprise to discover I knew virtually nothing of the town.
The book is evocative and stirring as you follow the authors journey from early childhood to his 16th year, when he finally leaves a deprived, economically and spiritual broken town for London, in hope of work and a better life.
The journey in between is a rich array of colourful and long forgotton characters and ways of life. Most striking by far is the harshness of past societies in which the poor were virtually ground into the dirt and totally at mercy of commerce. Yet still the love and joy of these kindly, caring and sweet natured people shines through, it took a great deal to make them lose all hope. One cannot help but to think that these poor and hardworking forbares made more than a little of the muscle in the British national psyche.
The Authors journey is one of love, loss and curiousity, his intelligence is meant for better things than the dust and grime of cotton mills but so hard worked are his people and he that this realisation is a long time coming.
Highlights characters are Grandma Bridget and the lovley Aunts he visits in Summer. Quite a journey and very much a joy to read.

If you have never been there, you now know it.......2004-06-23

This is a wonderful book which, as an Anglophile, I loved reading. Just a word to those who feel it some of the terms are American. Remember, please, that the author is now living in the US, and new terms become automatically one's own after a while. And yes, there is a sequel to this book!

You don't have to have been born in Blackburn (as I was) to appreciate this wonderful true story of a childhood in poverty with all the wit and humour and honesty of the working class. Their hopes for a better and fairer future are vivid and the story ends with an emotional desire from the reader to know how and if this young man succeeds as he takes his steps away from Lancashire. Inevitably the reader will read the sequel Beyond Nab End which is even better but read this first.

superb book-leaves you wanting more.......2003-05-19

William Woodruff and I have something in common; we were both born and reared poor in Lancashire, doubly lucky as Mr Woodruff puts it. The book itself is a reader, you pick it up and you can't put it down. There is always something else you want to read in the next chapter. It is a shame the book had an ending to it as it leaves you wanting more.

Like one of the other reviewers I was a bit disappointed when the text was dumbed down, probably for our American cousins, as little discrepancies showed through the text. For instance, stating ten pennies instead of ten pence (we would have said it 'tenpunce') and the absolute glaring mistake of calling a tanner 6p when it should have been 6d and a dodger is 3d not 3p. Little details like this tend to eat at me.

The book was easy to read and if you know a little about Lancashire, specifically Blackburn, you will find it fascinating.

An English Angela's Ashes.......2007-05-18

This is a story about a family during the early part of the twentieth century. It describes the severe hardships and endurance of the family who were workers in the cotton mills of Lancashire, England. Even though the conditions were very harsh, there is humor and a strong sense of family unity. William Woodruff, who writes this autobiography, gives a history of the plight of the millworkers and the events of these times. Poverty and a harsh class system were against them coupled with the General Strike and the Great Depression. Billy finally leaves Blackburn, Lancashire, at the age of sixteen and heads to London. Beyond Nab End tells the story of Billy's arrival in London, working in a foundry and finally going to Oxford on a scholarship. He describes his life at Oxford, the politics of the times then finally joining the British Army in 1940.
This book is very well written with meticulous details about life for the average worker of this period. It was a couldn't-put-down book for me. The author transcended his social status and beat a one-in-a-million odds or less to become a great writer.
