        Book Description

In Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, Richard Carlson revealed new ways to calm down and enjoy more peace in our lives. Now, in Don't Worry, Make Money, Richard Carlson provides more new strategies for living more fully and worrying less as a means of attracting more wealth and abundance in our lives.

Often we get into the trap of thinking that the only way to earn a good living is to stay late at the office, feeling stressed out and full of anxiety. However, this can actually get in the way of having a productive and rewarding career, and can drastically decrease our earnings. "Accept the fact that you can make excuses, or you can make money, but you can't do both," Carlson tells us. Combining his unique philosophy with specific financial strategies, Don't Worry, Make Money also tells us how to:

        * Use the power of reflection
        * Sock away two years' worth of living expenses
        * Learn about the relationship between moods and money
        * Develop relationships with people before you need something from them

Full of interesting and unique ideas for the overworked businessperson, Don't Worry, Make Money tells listeners how to live a life that's more wealthy, productive, and carefree by refusing to let worry get you down.

3 out of 5 stars Essays and reflections on the process of making money.......2006-10-09

I bought my copy in an used bookshop in Surfers Paradise, Australia.. decided to take back home because of the honest, down to earth advice that some pages exhibit.

I have forund it to be valuable as frequent reading, one chapter at a time and in a random order.. its my opinion the book will be much more valuable if you have already started your process of committment to making money. By that, I mean your inner process, its the part of thinking that creates the path to action (that you must take).

Do it frequently, there is seldom time to talk to a friend who can advice you like this book.

        3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-08-22

I don't think I finished reading this book. It seemed like the same ol' same ol' chicken soup stuff. I found nothing new in the half of it that I read.

5 out of 5 stars Create abundance with this book!.......2005-09-06

Let's not kid ourselves: there are perhaps thousands of books dedicated to motivating people, getting them closer to success, and so on. I have read a dozen or so of those books, but this one clearly stands out in my mind.

This book is separated into 100 easy-to-read chapters, which makes it much easier to manage the messages therein. Simply read at your own pace, digest, and implement. The honest and humorous writing makes it actually fun to read and look forward to future chapters.

Basically, this book tells you how to create abundance, whether through savings, change of perception, acquisition of friends, or other methods. The message is overwhelmingly positive and downright inspirational, as it should be. After reading the book, you will be inspired to take action and reach your goals as a happier, more fulfilled person.

        I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars be happy and make money.......2005-02-24

That's what the book is about. The get stressed about making money, just do it. Get off your bum and do the job and make yourself a fortune, but don't forget how you got there and be generous once you get there. Be real and obtain your goals. Your goals are not unreachable. The good ideas are right in front of your face. These are some of the psychological barriers that Richard Carlson helps you get over in this book. I loved the read. You should read it too.

5 out of 5 stars Like chatting with a real/good friend over coffee........2004-08-30

Reading Richard Carlson is like having coffee with a real good friend and chatting about life decisions. "Don't Worry, Make Money..." is somewhat mistitled because it is less about making money (or worry for that matter) but more about your quality of life. The thesis of the short book is rather simple -- there is abundance to be shared, we simply need to remove the roadblocks. Easier said than done - I agree. But we do need to take the first step.

There are at least three very distinct points, over and above the main thread of the book, that stuck with me: [1.] Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway!, [2.] The misnomer that you need to be uptight in order to succeed, and [3.] Help Someone Else Succeed.

In chapter 69 Carlson writes: "It's very helpful to remind yourself that, despite your fears, here you are. Somehow you have managed to survive it all. In this sense, all your worries have been a mirage -- a waste of time, irrelevant" (157). There is indeed a modicum of truth in this statement but over and above, fear makes us a little bit more cautious -- makes us take that second look, take that extra precaution -- that is not all bad. Unless we surrender totally to fear and slide into inactivity -- a little fear is a good thing. But as far as Carlson is concerned -- point taken.

In chapter 77, Carlson expounds yet again on the subject of fear. To borrow from Carlson, "The gentleman, in particular, was convinced that if a person was to follow my "program," as he put it, they would surely become apathetic, if not homeless! "If you're not uptight," he insisted, "you'll lose your drive." "Sadly, many people believe that if you aren't uptight and serious, you are doomed to failure. In my entire lifetime, I've never been more convinced that something is not true" (173). Well Richard, I hear the plea for a sense of perspective and the need for fun. Perhaps the message was not too clear or folks just simply refuse to think outside the box.

Lastly, and this issue rings the truest for me, in chapter 81 he writes: "Help Someone Else Succeed" (181). Success is something that is best shared. Carlson writes: "As you help others succeed, even in very small ways, it helps you redefine and reflect on your own goals, assumptions, and ways of doing things. If you suggest to someone else, for example, that they think of education as a lifelong process, it might remind you that you haven't taken a class in years. I'm often amazed at how my advice applies to my own life and my own success" (182). The point is that we need to think in terms of genuinely wanting others to succeed. Why not? It is something that is free and the goodwill developed is incalculable. Carlson, and I agree wholeheartedly, argues that general goodwill is just best all around.

I can understand how some might read this (or not) because they see it as soft and mushy and it will seem (and Carlson is cognizant of this) that we already knew all this. Well, it does not hurt to be reminded, once in while, just like having coffee at a cafe with a dear friend.

                                  Book Description

When Blanche Stone was diagnosed with bone cancer, her daughter interrupted an unusual life--in a Buddhist monastery--to return home and become a full-time caregiver. With practical wisdom, humor, and an eye for telling detail, Susan relates their experiences sharing a house, dealing with finances, participating in family and holiday rituals, finding ways to ease Blanche's discomfort as her health declined, gratefully accepting the support of the local hospice, and coming to a greater appreciation of each other as individuals.

Readers of any faith (or none) can benefit from these accounts of living moment by moment, responding without preconception to each evolving situation, embracing one's own needs along with the needs of a person facing death. Susan shows how such living happens: within a sacred place where there is room to honor and be awed by what is at hand, however difficult, and where one gains the freedom to enjoy it all.

At the Eleventh Hour presents a model for how children can offer parents the gift of a "good death." In its natural weaving of spiritual truths into the daily fabric of life, it is an eloquent expression of how being present to dying expands the capacity for living. And, like a wise and supportive friend, it can lift spirits and be a reminder that, hard as it is, it's okay--and sometimes even fun. (In this way, it is similar to Tuesday's with Morrie which has lifted the spirits of millions).

This lovely work truly distinguishes itself from other memoirs about the loss of a parent. Instead of making the author/daughter the "heroine" who rescues her mother and becomes a saint in the process, Susan Stone sees herself in a dynamic where her mother is the teacher as well. This is about Buddhist practice, not just daughterly responsibility.

What I like best is how Stone catches herself in moments of arrogance or manipulation that other, less mindful people wouldn't even notice. She walks through the map of her own behavior and responses, and points out what she did, and what she thinks she could have done. Her behavior is quite exemplary, but it is also evident that she had enormous help from a mother who *also* worked very hard to do what was right. The book ends up being an homage to her mother's enlightenment.

My own father was dying when someone gave this book to me. My first thought was "Thanks, but I don't need a book to tell me how to feel." When I actually read it, though, I loved it, and learned so much about how to honor my dying father, rather than just focus on my own needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Stone is adept at shifting the focus to the strengths and gifts of the dying parent.

It's a beautiful book, and I hope it finds a large audience.

I see the book as a chapter in a mindful life and I look forward to the sequel."

At The Eleventh Hour: Caring For My Dying Mother is author Susan Stone's own story, when the cancer diagnosis of her mother caused her to interrupt her life in a Buddhist monastery to cope with the reality of her mother's impending death. Closeness, loss, sadness and renewal are the hallmarks of this introspective yet warm book. Written with strength, poignant memory, and keen awareness of karma, At The Eleventh Hour is singularly affirming and highly recommended reading for students of Buddhism with respect to issues of death and dying, as well as anyone attempting to cope with the aging and infirmities of their parent's final days.

This is the most moving memoir I have ever read. The intimacy Sheridan Hill shares with her readers and close attention to details is breath taking. I could not put it down. Astonishing and simply beautiful.

This is a must read for the hospice community and the families they serve.

I could not put this book down, so real, taking us to that uncharted territory, the death of our mother. How do we stay present, how do we understand our relationship, how do we face death and find life?
Sheridan Hill tells her story with such detail and honesty. I am no longer afraid of death, for my parents or myself after reading this book.

I'm one of the "baby boom" generation, we who once shouted "never trust anyone over twenty-five!" And now we are in our forties, fifties, and sixties, often facing alone the crisis of the death of a parent or loved one. Our culture has ill prepared us for this passage, a society that dwells on youth and so carefully hides away death. I lost both of my parents several years back and only wish I had first read Ms. Hill's book, it would have served as a guide, and reaffirmed as well the rightness of decisions I made for the sake of my mother and father. It is not a book about death, it is a book about living and sharing to the fullest one's final journey with a parent.

I will freely admit I wept repeatedly as I read Ms. Hill's beautifully crafted tome which honors and celebrates her mother's final months. Reading it made me realize that so much of what I experienced was valid, that I was not alone in my feelings and gave me new and hopeful insights into my own life and the spiritual journey of my mother and father.

If you just read these reviews and do not buy the book, please heed her advice from this reviewer. Listen to your parents now, talk with them, share and recall all the moments, good and bad, and fight with all your passion to insure their time of passage is a time that is respectful of their dignity. Though I do hope you purchase this work even though the subject might be the last one on your mind at this moment. For someday it will occupy your life front and center and Ms. Hill is a guide you can turn to and trust.

Refreshing for the heart -- as eternal family values wait til the end of one's life to come to light. I want my siblings to read this. How I wish I had had time with my own mother before her passing!

My Name As A Prayer is a book you will want to read more than once, as I intend to do. But first I have to get copies to my sister and my sister-in-law, for I think this book will speak especially to mothers and daughters. However, as a former hospice volunteer and as someone who was present during the months my parents were dying and being cared for by hospice, I find that Sheridan Hill's book also has much to teach even those of us--male or female--who have already seen our parents or other loved ones pass on. I remember once when I was alone with a dying woman--or so I thought--and listening to her have a long conversation with unseen others in the room...and the peace it brought her. I could only hear her side of the conversation; there was only silence when she wasn't speaking, but it was surely "holy silence" wherein she could hear what she needed to hear, even though I couldn't. Sheridan Hill's thoughts on "holy silence" and the need to allow the dying to be present (i.e., not overly medicated) at their own deaths are insightful, I think, and worth the price of the book alone. Of course, simply being present, via the book, with Ms. Hill to hear her beautiful story is worth the price of the book, too.

Soft but detailed illustrations provide a soothing back drop for a rather stark script. It is an honest rendition of the emotional pain caused by serious illness and/or loss of a loved one. The interwoven message of comfort makes this book a worthwhile addition to the library of anyone, especially those who have contact with pre-teen and younger children. Because specifics are left unsaid, this book could create a promising opportunity for discussion with any grieving child.

                                  Book Description

Do we ever really know who our parents are?

When Hillary Johnson learned that her mother had terminal cancer, she left New York City and returned to Minneapolis to care for her mother in her final years. While coping with the practical and emotional difficulties such a situation would cause any daughter, she slowly discovered what she had failed to see in the two decades since she'd left home for college and later career: her mother's identity as a woman, independent of the role of mother or wife.

In vivid snapshots of memory Johnson recalls her intense and sometimes troubled relationship with her irrepressible parent, Ruth Jones, who married at eighteen, had two young children by the time she was twenty-one and a few years later moved to Paris with her young children in search of a more fulfilling life. "Gone to Paris, took the kids," read the note she left her husband.

MY MOHER DYING is a beautifully written and emotionally compelling account of how two woman get to look beyond the role of mother and daughter and see two complex individuals who are given a final chance to truly know one another under the pressure of impending death.

I feel I cannot do justice writing a review on such a high caliber memoir. Emotions run so deep and the characters are made so lifelike that I felt such a kinship with this family. Hillary Johnson is a fantastic writer and a fabulous daughter and caretaker. She deserves five gold stars for the wonderful job she did taking care of her mother through such dramatic medical horrors. I am honored and enriched for having read her book. Her mother was the bravest of women who faced life and illness with the best attitude possible. Her book will be the biggest help to me as my mother's health continues to decline. Thank you to both of you, Hillary and Ruth. Your mother was absolutely right to encourage the writing of this painful, truthful account of her living and dying. I am ordering it now for my sisters.

This "shared memoir" is a gem in every way: from the author's eloquent writing style to her mother's whimsical yet provocative drawings and even the smooth surfaces of the pages. Like the physical feel of the pages and the colors in her mother's artwork, the authors' words are finely wrought and rich. I didn't want to put the book down.

This book is a entrancing autobiography and biography of a woman and her mother and in particular the story of a rekindeling of their connection as adults when the mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Unlike the suggestion of the title this is not a depressing story, it is strongly life affirming, funny and an interesting look at two remarkable women. It has helped me greatly in dealing with my own mother's death from cancer. I recomend it highly!

I have just finished reading MY MOTHER DYING by Hillary Johnson, art by Ruth Jones, the mother Johnson nursed during her final illness. This is a beautiful memoir to the complex relationship of mothers and daughters, a memoir addressing those who have cared for and wathced a loved one die, a memoir about the coming of age of a woman who became a wife and mother at a very young age in the fifties. Ms. Johnson has captured the magnificence and complexity of the mother-daughter relationship, an artist's struggle to express herself, a family member dealing with the myriad of problems that are present in watching a loved one pass on. The author's prose is glorious, and she uses many notes her mother wrote to her after she was rendered mute fom throat cancer surgery. Johnson has preserved the many legal pads filled by her Mother after her surgery, and uses them in her book to give a voice to Ruth for all, and a voice from Ruth to her daughter. The bonus for readers is the reproduction of Ruth Jones' art, whimsical and telling of her life, and the insight it gave her daughter into her mother's own self expression.

                                  Book Description

What do you do when a loved one is dying? How do you react when you are immersed in hospital procedures and red tape, and then suddenly find yourself and your loved one in a hospice care center. How do you respond emotionally, logically, spiritually?

A Gift of Love: The Story of My Mother's Dying Time, brings an account of a daughter facing one of the most crucial events of the human journey--the rapid health decline of her mother and her mother's eventual "victory over life". The story tells of the compassion and sacrifice of the daughter during the critical days of her mother's life; it tells of the strength and peace of the mother as she faces her own death. It reveals a woman's lifetime of faith culminated in one final moment of amazement and blessed assurance.

This book offers an insight into the dying process; an insight not of tragedy, but of peace, acceptance, and faith.

                                      Book Description

What a world we live in! Whereas in some places residents have to fight hard to resist the temptation not to overfeed themselves, at other places people are threatened at best with malnutrition, if not starvation.

In this readable and entertaining book, the author, who came from Ghana to become a medical doctor in Germany, sets out to highlight some of these inequalities as he attempts to compare and contrast the simple and communal lifestyle of a traditional African society with the sophisticated and egocentric one he found in Western society. Addressed to his mother in her final battle with death, and sent through a fictitious courier, it attempts, among other things, to give her, a woman who spent all her life in a typical African countryside, an idea of the things she would have seen and experienced on a visit to her son resident in the northern German city of Hannover.

The book is an invaluable guide for anyone from a developing country who for the first time visits or wishes to settle in the West; but it will also be read with keen interest by people in the West wishing to know more of traditional African society.
