The Corporate Shaman: A Business Fable
Richard Whiteley Manufacturer: Collins ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0060008393 Release Date: 2002-02-19 |
Amazon.com
Richard Whiteley believes the mystical healing power of a shaman can be harnessed for use in the business world, and in The Corporate Shaman he explains his philosophy--along with ways these traditional seers might actually function in such an environment. Whiteley, an entrepreneur, speaker, and author involved in the practice himself for the past decade, describes a shaman as "one who enters an altered state of mind, at will, and journeys to other worlds and uses the power, wisdom, and energies of those worlds to create positive change in people and the environments in which they live." Recognizing that this concept will be alien to many in his intended audience, Whiteley couches it in the currently popular form of a business fable. Using a composite of common situations and easily recognizable people that, in this case, populate a fictional company missing its numbers and threatening to pull everyone into a downward spiral, he introduces the basics and shows how they could be employed in the workplace. An addendum offers additional details for those who wish to test the ideas themselves. Readers open to new routes for personal and professional growth should find this intriguing and potentially useful. --Howard RothmanBook Description
Shaman -- a Siberian word for "one who sees in the dark" -- refers to healers who for over 40,000 years have entered an altered state of mind at will and journeyed to other worlds, using the power, wisdom, and energies of those worlds to create positive change in people and the environments in which they live. Since shamanic practices are aimed at healing individuals and since business organizations are nothing more than groups of individuals, it follows that these powerful methods are successful when used to heal and restore spirit to businesses. Out of this idea emerges the corporate shaman, a consultant who recognizes the business as organism, not machine, and reestablishes healthy internal environments in corporations.
PRIMETEC is a midsize company in crisis. Without realizing that he is a major part of the problem, CEO Leon King is pointing the finger at his executives, managers, and just about everyone else. As a result, the company's executives are caught in a stranglehold, preoccupied with thoughts of quitting or being fired, as the company quickly spins out of control. Only with the aid of Jason Hand, the corporate shaman -- a man well versed in ancient shamanic traditions and modern corporate culture -- can the organization hope to turn itself around.
Jason's knowledge and use of animal totems that empower people begin the healing process for PRIMETEC. Working with and understanding animal spirits enable Leon's beleaguered staff to envision and implement unconventional solutions to chronic problems and renew their enthusiasm. And finally, Leon King himself must confront his own role in the failing business. With the help of the corporate shaman, King begins to develop the awareness and compassion required to salvage his floundering company. After first stumbling as he embraces his new leadership behavior, King successfully begins the arduous healing process that promises to bring his company back to prominence.
In the tradition of The One Minute Manager and Who Moved My Cheese?, The Corporate Shaman is a business fable, one that depicts the high-stress organizational environments that many employees experience today and how an ancient system for healing and rejuvenation can transform such stress into productive activity. PRIMETEC is a composite of many real organizations and mirrors real-life results of integrating spirituality into the workplace. Engrossing, involving, and right on time to feed a spiritually hungry workforce, The Corporate Shaman offers recognizable characters and powerful insights into the difficulties of balancing the private and professional self and the nature of leadership, change, and growth. Through the inspirational lessons this book teaches, business leaders will learn how to restore the souls -- and profits -- of their corporations.

Ancient Wisdom for Spiritual Leadership.......2003-09-12
As a corporate shaman who has helped companies retrieve the lost vitality of the corporate soul and employee soul, I encourage leaders to read this book as a compass toward a new future.
A spirited journey into an alternative view.......2003-07-23
The answer to the problem: shaman practises of healing or restoring the spirit. I am not sure if all readers will easily accept the solution because it might be too far of the traditional business worldview. The solution however is unique, fresh and certainly potent with potential to provide for the open-minded reader a doorway into a new realm of energy and expectation. On a meta-level, the solution is that leaders in corporations should get in touch with themselves and their inner being. The solution I believe is universal and can be applied irrespective of the beliefs of the reader.
The open-minded reader will get the most out of the book because it has clear detail in terms of how to enter into a drumming journey of discovering words of wisdom and guidance. The author succeeds extremely well to convey the basics of shamanism in a very direct and vivid. There is absolutely no uncertainty in the author that he provides a valid answer. Although the solution is presented in the framework of a fable, the proposed solution is described with clarity.
I felt inspired after reading the book by the pure thrust of potential contained in the fable itself. The book is highly recommended to those who are curious about what shamanism is all about as well as managers that simply feels despondent and out of touch with themselves.
It's time to bring spirit into the workplace.......2002-04-25
The Corporate Shaman helps us see what trust, cooperation, synergy, creativity, and tapping into higher potential really mean. It's an allegory -- a story -- like many other business books these days. But the difference is that Shaman practice DOES exist throughout the world. And, it seems to carry with it, a deep-seated knowledge about what makes us tick and how we can connect with each other and higher purpose -- including HIGHER BUSINESS PURPOSE.
Richard Whiteley straddles the mythical and the real in a way that only someone who has been there to produce results without sacrificing soul can do.
How can anyone who leads or influences organizations NOT purchase, read, or find ways to assimilate and act on this book?
Take a risk. Take a chance. Go to the edges. Recognize that the only way we can leap forward is by discovering the heart, soul, and spirit of people. When you do, you will realize that The Corporate Shaman is a fabulous allegory and life myth for making these happen.

The book's second section looks at financial and valuation issues, a particularly important area when purchasing companies that are not subject to SEC regulations. Coverage includes normalizing historical financial statements, using financial forecasts, determining real ROI, valuation methods for midsize companies, and determining the value of partial ownerships, intangible assets, and business risk characteristics.
After a detailed examination of legal issues, the book explores the roles of outside professionals in the M&A process, including intermediaries, attorneys, accountants, business appraisers, and machinery and technical appraisers. The book concludes with a look at various ways of structuring the final deal and the pros and cons of each arrangement from both the buyer's and seller's perspectives.

Product Description
The 2005 edition of this well-known reference work for the tax community provides an introduction to the application of the United States international taxation system to taxpayers investing or transacting business in the US and other countries. In a relatively brief and manageable form, it sets forth the principles adopted by the US in taxing US or foreign individuals and corporations as they invest, work, or carry on a trade or business in the US or abroad. The presentation focuses on ten specific aspects of the subject matter: general aspects of the corporation income tax, the individual income tax, the tax treatment of partnerships, trusts and estates, and accounting aspects; the basic jurisdictional principles adopted by the US with respect to application of its income tax to international investment and business transactions; the US rules for taxing foreign corporations, foreign partnerships, foreign trusts, and nonresident aliens on their business and investment income derived from US sources; the basic mechanism adopted by the US to alleviate international double taxation on foreign source income derived by US persons; the income tax treatment of foreign corporations controlled by US shareholders; the general inter-company pricing rules and special transfer pricing rules applicable to particular transactions; rules for the treatment of transactions involving currencies other than the US dollar; situations in which US income tax treaty provisions modify the basic rules; and the wealth transfer tax system, including modifications made by estate and gift tax treaties. Throughout the discussion, the authors incorporate references not only to the Internal Revenue Code provisions under discussion, but also to relevant Treasury Regulations and other administrative material and to important cases that have arisen. The materials are current as of 1 January, 2005 and include a complete discussion of the changes made by the 2004 Jobs Creation Act. For non-US tax practitioners, tax professors and students both within and outside the US, and others seeking a structural framework within which a US tax problem can be placed, Introduction to United States International Taxation offers the ideal reference source.

Thomas Jefferson: Historical Overview and Bibliography
Manufacturer: Nova Science Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1590335228 |
Book Description
As both the author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson would seem to have accomplished more than enough for one lifetime. But Jefferson was the epitome of the term "Renaissance Man," having also been a noted lawyer, architect, patriot, diplomat, philosopher, and scholar. He designed his famous mansion of Monticello following his initial career practicing law. He then served in the Virginia legislature and as a delegate in the Continental Congress, where he wrote the renowned Declaration. After the Revolutionary War, he served as the U.S. representative in France, secretary of state, and vice-president. In his eight years as president, his notable achievements included the Louisiana Purchase. Rather than seek a third term as president, he retired to Monticello and authored several books. He also founded the University of Virginia and remained active in American political debates, particularly over the issue of slavery. This book presents a captivating study of Thomas Jefferson's fascinating life, based on excerpts from James Schouler's thorough 1919 biography. The overview is augmented by a substantial and selective bibliography, featuring access provided through author, title, and subject indexes.
