Once again Bob Abernethy has continued contributing to the industry's knowledge of probably the most powerful reliability tool we have-- Weibull analysis. This edition has added techniques and case studies that keep it current and make it the premier introduction and handbook on the subject.
My Reliability Statistics Bible.......2006-11-16
I have several copies of the "New Weibull Handbook" from as far back as 1994. All have been a tremendous help with each new edition covering something new and important for me to incorporate into my analysis and testing. The fifth edition is no exception to this trend. It is the best practical guide to reliability life-data analysis with straightforward explanations free of confusing statistical jargon making it engineering friendly. Reliability life-data analysis is a changing subject with new applications and best-practices being developed. The "New Weibull Handbook" 5th edition introduces new material that is not covered anywhere else. I own numerous reliability statistics books and have found the "New Weibull Handbook" to be the best for everyday application. I have seen comments on previous editions that the book is not as useful without the software, this is simply not true. I did not have access to the WinSMITH software package until recently. The basic techniques were simple enough for me to implement in spreadsheets and generic graphing packages which I used for many years prior to our group adopting the WinSMITH Weibull package.

Good start, Room for improvement........1999-11-19
The weibull is often referenced, but is rarely given a technically satisfying treatment. This book did much to fill the gap.
Overall this is a nice book, and a much-needed resource. Hey, what more are you looking for?
I think 5 stars is a bit much, since there are ways in which this, a solid book, could be made into something exceptional.
I would recommend the author include more applications, with source code. As a specific suggestion, include iterative convergence from raw failure data on a representative 3-factor fit. Try to find any text that provides directly-applicable techniques for resolving the parameters. Sure, you'll find an expression for alpha and beta... perhaps a vague comment about iterative solution, but not much more. The truth is that you cannot iterate by any simple means, since convergence on the Weibull 3-fac is rarely stable.
There are other areas for improvement, but this is a review, not a chat room.
Here's a mere nit: I could have done without the tables in print. On the next revision, save paper and expense of publishing in print, and just put those on a disk.
Enjoyable Introduction to the Weibull.......1999-11-10
The book is an excellent Introduction to the Weibull but do not expect any book to deal with these equations at a lower level. The reader from San Diego may have gotten frustrated by making that mistake. The Gamma function is defined by an equation on pg 4 and the number on page six is no more than a look up in the Gamma table of pg 4. If you, the potential reader, has a little background in the areas related to the use of the Weibull you should find this book a way to effectively introduce yourself to the subject. A large part of the book is devoted to tables but that didn't bother me since Mr Dodson provided some some nice examples.

This book is directed toward those of us who work versus those in acadamia. Those with many years of experience will find it very helpful and complete. Those without any experience will enjoy the may examples and the software so they do not have to work the equations by hand.
The software ran fine under Windows 95. I would have bought the book even without the software. It was a nice added touch for the price of only a book. I would give it 5 stars as well.
The reviewer from San Diego critized the example that accompanied the table on page 4. The example is correct and the people I've talked with thought it was easy to follow.

WORKING THE EXAMPLE BACKWARDS REVEALS A GAMMA FUNCTION THAT IS NOT IN THE TABLE ON PAGE 4. THE SOFTWARE IS A DOS BASED PROGRAM. VIRTUALLY EVERYONE TODAY IS RUNNING WIN95 OR NT OR MAC. SUGGEST THE SOFTWARE BE UPDATED FOR THE TIMES.

The purpose of this book is to provide practitioners with the tools necessary to utilize the Weibull distribution for modeling, analysis and problem solving. The book includes both basic and advanced concepts. The underlying theme of keeping the presentations simple was followed throughout the book. Thus, very little mathematical theory is presented. Step by step examples are used to illustrate each technique presented. Practitioners will find easy to follow roadmaps guiding them through every step of an analysis. Since most practitioners are more interested in results rather than how to perform calculations, the majority of roadmaps have been incorporated into a computer program contained on an accompanying disk (Windows 95 or later). This second edition includes more explanation on the benefits and weaknesses of the competing methods for parameter estimation, and tips for which method to use in a given situation. A chapter has been added to address data sets with few or no failures. This chapter also includes a discussion of test design and an algorithm for financially optimizing durability tests.
This book has been written in a manner to accommodate both the novice and the experienced engineer or statistician. The novice can apply the techniques presented by reading the assumptions and application requirements, while the veteran can gain more understanding by reading the mathematical details of the technique.

Description:
For the purpose of analyzing cyclical stochastic processes in business cycles, we propose a regime-switching model with duration dependence that makes use of the Weibull model. The advantage of this model is that it relaxes a constraint of the Markov-switching model in favor of time-varying transition probabilities, and investigates the property of duration dependence in business states. We employ Bayesian inference via MCMC to overcome the drawbacks of maximum likelihood estimation. Estimation using the composite index of coincident indicator shows that both the contractions and the expansions of the Japanese business cycle exhibited positive duration dependence during the last two decades.

The shuffled complex-evolution metropolis algorithm (SCEM-UA) is used to estimate mixed Weibull distribution parameters in automotive reliability analysis. The results are compared with maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) results. The comparison shows that, in the examples given, SCEM-UA can deliver more accurate results than MLE overall.

This paper presents a case study regarding the reliability analysis of some automotive components based on field failure warranty data. The components exhibit two different failure modes, namely early and wearout failures, and are mounted on different vehicles, which differ among themselves for car model and engine type, thus involving different operating conditions. Hence, the failure time of each component is a random variable with a bimodal pdf which also depends upon a vector of covariates that indexes the specific operating condition. Then, a mixed-Weibull distribution, where the pdf of each subpopulation (namely the 'weak' and 'strong' subpopulation) depends on the covariates through the scale parameter, is used to analyze the component lifetime. A Fortran algorithm for the maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters has been implemented and a stepwise procedure, in its backwards version, has been used to test the significance of covariates and to construct the regression model. The presence of a weak subpopulation has been verified and the fraction of weak units in the population has also been estimated. Finally, the adequacy of the proposed model to fit the observed data has been assessed.

High job turnover rate can cause many problems and each company needs proper strategies to prevent the brain-drain of its manpower. For effective human resource management, predicting the occupational life expectancy or the mean residual life of those who are to leave and join another company is important. In this paper, we propose a random effects Weibull regression model for forecasting the occupational lifetime of the employees who join another company, based on their characteristics. Advantage of using such a random effects model is the ability of accommodating not only the individual characteristics of each employee but also the uncertainty that cannot be explained by individual factors. We apply the proposed model to the occupational lifetime data obtained from the company affiliated to general trading in Korea. From our analyses, we can infer the characteristics of those who have a relatively longer occupational lifetime as follows: the managing director level, relatively old, those who entered the company earlier, high school graduates, those who were involved in technical service, and married female employees. Accordingly, effective human resources management policy is necessary to retain those who are good but want to leave and those who stay but need more improvement for the betterment of the company.

The objective of the work presented in this paper is the determination of an optimal age-based maintenance strategy for wheel motor armatures of a fleet of Komatsu haul trucks in a mining application in Chile. For such purpose, four years of maintenance data of these components were analyzed to estimate their failure distribution and a model was created to simulate the maintenance process and its restrictions. The model incorporates the impact of successive corrective (on-failure) and preventive maintenance on necessary new component investments. The analysis of the failure data showed a significant difference in failure distribution of new armatures versus armatures that had already undergone one or several preventive maintenance actions. Finally, the model was applied to calculate estimated costs per unit time for different preventive maintenance intervals. From the resulting relationship an optimal preventive maintenance interval was determined and the operational and economical consequences and effects with respect to the actual strategy were quantified. The application of the model resulted in the optimal preventive maintenance interval of 14,500 operational hours. Considering the failure distribution of the armatures, this optimal strategy is very close to a run-to-failure scenario.

This is the best book on office politics I have ever seen. The writer talks very straight and everything seems to stem from his own personal experience. Every paragraph in the book you can relate to your own personal experience. The suggestions in this book are invaluable.

Unless you are a complete idiot, you already know everything this book has to offer. If you have spent any time at all in the corporate environment, this is all day-to-day stuff here. Couldn't be more boring and obvious.
Purchase this book only if you are interested in reading stories from the authors personal work history as he tries to relate it to the so called "tactics" in the book.
Complete waste.
A practical management book.......2003-09-25
Unlike any other management book, this one is real dirty. Depends on how you read it, this book contains many dirty tricks. We don't necessary need to follow them, we may on the good side being aware of these tricks. On the other hand, some of the points are actually postive and motivating (like to be more sociable, try work overtime, etc) I hope you are not looking for tricks for revenge (which you will), but to read it using a clear and positive and preventive mind.

I have read hundreds of books on management, but this is my favorite and has saved me many times. I have a 25 year military background and simply could not grasp the political realities of a corporate environment until this very readable book with all of it's practical wisdom spelled it out for me. A must-read!
Necessary Reading.......2002-08-13
I'd put this book on the must-read book for management books. The reason is not so much how to master the corporate political techniques the book explains. Rather, this book identifies the most common methods so that you may be aware of them, so that you can recognize them and better counter them. Not so many people corporate backstabbers trying to get their way to the top, but no one wants to be bushwacked by an eager-beaver just playing the right games. So, I'd read this book for the great defensive leasons, instead of employing it as on offensive tool towards your way to the top.

Al Frank: The Philosopher Investor.......2005-09-21
The book is a breath of fresh air, providing a solid value-based strategy for investment togethr with a sound intellectual justification for it. In my more than thirty years of investing life encompassing a bevy of strategies and literally hundreds of books on investment, I have not come across a professionally trained philosopher writing about investment. Al Frank is that investor philosopher. If you want an intellectual challenge coupled with a proven strategy of investing in stocks, read this book. Think, profit and enjoy!
Not much meat.......2003-08-31
Basically this is typical value investing with a small cap bent, though he will buy value at any price. Chapter two covers this and the rest of the book will put you to sleep. He's long winded, add small type and over 350 pages... it was a struggle to finish.
Much of it could have been left out. 50 pages are a review and comments of past years portfolios. Another chapter is on his pet peeves, one on funds, one defending use margin and one on Tech analysis (he doesn't use it for individual issues, but he looks at a few general market indicators to guage risk and overbought levels in the market). Except for a chapter 9 analysis of Ford, there isn't much about selection besides chapter 2.
His returns were made using full margin. His best contibution it to say don't be too rigid on the numbers, be flexible. Usually stocks will be undervalued on a couple measures but not all of them. I'd recommend any other book on value investing.

THE THESIS OF THIS BOOK IS THAT YOU BUY THE MARKETS WORST STOCKS AND HOLD THEM FOR AT LEAST FIVE YEARS HOPING THEY WILL COME BACK TO GLORY. hE BUYS STOCKS THAT HAVE LOW P/E'S LOW PRICE TO SALES AND LOW PRICE TO BOOK. USUALLY THESE STOCKS HAVE LOADS OF DEBT, TERRIBLE PRODUCTs OR ARE IN A TERRIBLE INDUSTRY. eXAMPLE STEEL
Most of the stocks he picks are terrible and will never make you any money and are the riskiest in the market.Example of stocks he tells you to buy in his newsletter kmart, wcom, conseco etc.

A must for every value investor........2002-03-24
Unlike some books, were authors write about great investors or skilled authors with little practical experience present their opinions, Al Frank is a great investor and a skilled author with lots of practical experience. Thus, the book is a pleasure to read, more comprehensive than most and presents conclusions drawn from decades of value investing in common stocks.
With a folksy, down to earth approach, the author goes over what's most important for a long term investor: Patience, Stock Selection, Diversification and Risk Management. Important financial ratios are also explained and the use of margin is reviewed in great detail. In fact, there are very few investment books which deal with margin as well as this one. This is probably because not many investment book authors have as much experience in this area as Al Frank. However, this is not a get rich quick book, but instead the presentation of a logical, long term seasoned strategy.

Interesting read!.......2007-05-27
Have written naked puts a number of times before and although you can loose your shirt quickly with this stratergy am comfortable with the logic behind it. Am not so comfortable with writing naked calls however. This book has got me considering it. As a read it is simple to understand and concise in it's detail of action to take in any situwation should things not turn out as planned,which I liked. I also liked the distinction between trading stocks and etf's and the possible benifits outlined from doing so. The fact it is written by an author with a banking background gives me confidence in his experience of useing the stratergies outlined to use money to make superior returns. Useful book.

I like to read Pauls books because they explain things in a simple and precise manner. I had no idea on understandind Options, but now I am very confident in what I am doing.
I can strongly recommend Pauls books for people starting out in the deritives market.

The core of this book consists of the provisions of "Subchapter J," the relevant portion of the Internal Revenue Code (sections 641 through 692), and its first priority is to give readers an understanding of those provisions and how they work. This text takes four distinct, but integrated, approaches. At the beginning of each section, the book presents assignments of carefully selected provisions of the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. Following are one or more precedents (cases or rulings) dealing with the topic at hand accompanied by textual material that amplifies the topic by further analysis of the primary precedent(s), presentation of other precedents, or discussion of subsequent developments. Finally, numerous problems, where appropriate, allow the reader to apply the material to actual fact patterns.
