        Book Description

The future is open to us, to be written or created collectively. This powerful statement flies in the face of traditional notions of prediction and forecasting, but is central to the approach presented in this book. The author maintains that, with the right tools and attitudes, people can learn how to create futures.

In this handbook for professionals, managers, planners, and entrepreneurs will discover an arsenal of effective futures-thinking techniques--from workshops to scenario-building software--that enhance the collective process. Readers will find effective ways to anticipate change, while avoiding cliched solutions and conventional thinking .

Creating Futures provides powerful tools for business and political leaders facing uncertainty.

4 out of 5 stars Creative for creating future.......2007-03-19

Always disappointed with the stereo-typed future forecasting methods too popular, I have been finding a new way of thinking.
Scenario planning seemed to be a very fresh tool . Rich real cases were much interesting, so, very useful for my job in the forecasting.
But, follow-up informations for the scenario planning application would be better one for many practitioners and scholars.
Inspite of that, it seemed superior to any other books ever before, because it included much new sight and experiences.

1 out of 5 stars There is Nothing here!.......2003-08-21

        According to this book:
In the 70's the french invented everything, and the rest is history.

This "work" purports to be an "analytic approach" to the problem of scenario building. Instead it is a mish mosh of chapters and unordered subsections which have no obvious relation to each other. Moreover, if the book had containd any real (useful) information, it is lost between the lack of: ability to write, the editor's sacred reponsilibty to do his job, and the translation which I found bordering on criminal.

Still you can get out enough to know that there is no content to this book whatsoever. Warning, this task entails much mental and physical anguish!

STILL if you are dying to know what this book is trying but failing to say, look up the paper by "Ioannis A. Sideris" entitled: "THE USE OF SCENARIO PLANNING METHODOLOGY IN MOBILE BUSINESS AS A LEARNING TOOL". I do not want to give more info...just Try Google.

Finally, if you want a true sample of an analytic approach, look at various people's work at Rand, particualrly on the global warming problem. Particualrly works by R.Lempert.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy--for professionals and academicians only.......2002-07-28

Professor Michel Godet is a Frenchman with 14 books and over 200 papers under his belt. A specialist in strategic planning, he emphasizes the careful use of tools such as scenario planning.

The book is a valuable contribution to the literature of serious-really serious-strategic planners. It will be most appreciated by those who have a very strong scientific bent and are comfortable working with models. Godet's approach is considerably more rigorous than futures-thinking approaches applied in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The concept of the book is very long-range, evidenced by quotes like "the faster the car, the stronger the headlights must be" and "the longer a tree takes to grow, the earlier you have to plant it." English-speaking futurists tend to look more short-range and medium-range with more of an application of intuition mixed with scientific research.

Americans have become accustomed to engaging in quite a bit of internet research to gather information needed for evaluation, decision-making, and planning. Godet describes the internet as "a computerized dumpster," all the while acknowledging that one may still find gold in a dump.

This book is complex and slow reading. The content is "heavy." Nine chapters are followed by a bibliography and index. The first five chapters are titled How to Think About the Future Now, Why Do the Experts Get it Wrong, Hunting Down Cliches, How to be Rigorous with Scenario Planning, and Initiating the Entire Process. The balance of the book, save the last chapter on The Human Factor, consists of case studies.

Good marks for content. Marks off for not making the learning a bit easier to move through. If you're not a real pro-or aspiring pro-in strategic planning, save your time and money.

3 out of 5 stars Rich in techniques, hard to pick out the ideas.......2002-01-18

I was inspired by this book to focus on the future more in general, and in particular to deliberately imagine the future as a spectrum of possible scenarios, which I could watch emerge and either became more likely or fall away as possibilities.

The book was very dense reading, really an MBA text, and had some good case studies and methodology description.

Lot's of comment about the author's reputation and consulting gigs.

I was surprised to learn that the French had made so many very, highly, significant, and important contributions to strategic thinking.

1 out of 5 stars Find another book on Options........2003-12-07

This is definitely not an easy reading book. It's essentially a dry college textbook, drier then most Physics textbooks. I am not too sure why people like this book. It's rated fairly high, which was why I initially bought it, but now I regret it. The book is written by multiple authors, therefore some chapters are better then others. But overall it's difficult to read because in some areas, the descriptions are too terse, in others too detailed to the point of confusing. I've owned this book for almost three years and I've never been able to consistently read through it. I will drop it because it's too frustrating. Then I try again a couple of months later and I drop it again. I essentially gave up and decided to go ahead and read Lawrence McMillan's Option book. His book has a better flow because it's the same author throughout, and he does a pretty good job of explaining the subject. This book is only good for probably a reference book, but not for advancing your techniques of Options trading. I am going to try and sell this book instead of using it as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars A thorough walk through options trading.......2001-03-08

This book is somewhat like 'A Random Walk Down Wallstreet" only applies to option trading, not just Wall Street and goes beyond. To the nit wit that blasted this book, I seriously doubt if he took the time to read it.I also recommend Safety First Investing and Wall Street Money Machine for more option techniques.Good books.

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough good stuff about this book.......2001-01-16

Wow, amazing, excellent, insufficient superlatives to describe my feelings - this one and Sheldon Nattenberg's Option Volatility and Pricing and you know more than most of the wall street professionals in my opinion. I found it practical and insightful, particularly with respect to the institutional trading strategies and how the trading floors operate.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Options.......2000-07-04

This book presents a highly readable overview of the subject of options and I would recommend it to anyone. I have not been able to find one book on options which is as wide ranging in its scope (i.e., history, pricing, strategy, individual and institutional investors' approaches, how the trading floor operates, how market makers trade, etc.). The authors have struck a good balance between depth of the subject matter and readability. There are more detailed texts available in the area of strategy (McMillan's _Options as a Strategic Investment_) or pricing (Natenberg's _Option Volatility and Pricing_), but I would especially recommend this book to individual investors interested in options. After reading this book they will have a much stronger footing from which to approach the forementioned other books (which are also excellent, by the way).

The previous reviewer's comments should be disregarded as I cannot conceive of anyone writing about this subject matter any more clearly (yes, I have read both of Fontanills' books) -- the authors appear to have put much effort into this book judging by its clarity, and one nitwit's daffy comments should not dissuade you!

1 out of 5 stars Misses the mark for a practical book.......2000-05-30

I was very disappointed by this book. I had attended some free events by the OIC and purchased this book at their encouragement.

It is not easy to follow, does not cover the subject in an easy to understand manner. They try to publish to justify their existance.

I prefer an number of other books that hit the mark - McMillan, Natenburg and of course the master of all option trader's Fontanills.

                      Book Description

Although every merger or acquisition has its' own set of unique circumstances, the business and interpersonal dynamics in significant change remain surprisingly predictable. An organization's ability to apply this approach to its unique circumstances will vary, but the authors' experience has been that using the approach discussed in this book made the average organization good, the good organization better, and the better organizations the best in the business. Market analysis has shown that only 17% of mergers and acquisitions achieve the results they projected. This book provides executives and project managers guidance on the key imperatives required to be a part of that winning 17%. The processes, tools, and tips presented in this book are the result of years of working closely with senior executives during merger and acquisition integrations.

                          Book Description

My long personal association with Mr. Lincoln gave me special facilities in the direction of obtaining materials for these volumes. Such were our relations during all that portion of his life when he was rising to distinction, that I had only to exercise a moderate vigilance in order to gather and preserve the real data of his personal career. Being strongly drawn to the man, and believing in his destiny, I was not unobservant or careless in this respect. It thus happened that I became the personal depository of the larger part of the most valuable material in existence. Out of this store the major portion of the materials of the following volumes has been drawn.

In determining Lincoln's title to greatness we must not only keep in mind the times in which he lived, but we must, to a certain extent, measure him with other men. Many of our great men and our statesmen, it is true, have been self-made, rising gradually through struggles to the topmost round of the ladder; but Lincoln rose from a lower depth than most of them - from a stagnant, putrid pool, like the gas which, set on fire by its own energy and self-combustible nature, rises in jets, blazing, clear and bright. I should be remiss in my duty if did not throw the light on this part of the picture, so that the world may realize what marvelous contrast one phase of his life presents to another.

The object of this work is to deal with Mr. Lincoln individually and domestically; as lawyer, as citizen, as statesman. Special attention is given to the history of his youth and early manhood, and while dwelling on this portion of his life the liberty is taken to insert many things that would be omitted or suppressed in other places. The endeavor is to keep Lincoln in sight all the time, to cling close to his side all the way through - leaving to others the more comprehensive task of writing a history of his times. I have no theory of his life to establish or destroy. Mr. Lincoln was my warm devoted friend. This is a facsimile reprint of the 3 volume set “As Published in 1888”.

I had long wanted to own a hardcover edition of Herndon's famous book on Abraham Lincoln and the purchase of this one by Digital Scanning, Inc. fulfilled my desire perfectly.

Everyone with a serious interest in Mr. Lincoln's life should read this book. Originally published in 1888, it is one of the main starting points for all subsequent works devoted to understanding this complex man. It remains a great book for reading after all of these years.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF WILLIAM H. HERNDON'S LINCOLN BY JOHN CHUCKMAN.......2005-02-25

With a certain group of American historians, largely those concerned with preserving images of America's founders and luminaries as saintly figures in white plaster togas, this book remains controversial.

In fact, it is perhaps the greatest biography of an American historical figure ever written. It is recommended highly to all lovers of good biography. It is indispensible to serious students of American history.

The official defenders of America's Civic Religion dislike this book because it captures some raw and awkward aspects of Lincoln, but Lincoln was rather raw and awkward and self-taught. It is the rise of such a man to such heights, plus his great natural eloquence, that make Lincoln remarkable.

Such historians love to cite this or that relatively insignificant error (in a 500-page book replete with details) to discredit Herndon, but Herndon's own detail and sense of honesty make him the best argument against such foolishness.

No one was better qualified than Herndon to record the life of Lincoln, having been his friend and business partner for many years. Herndon also conscientiously compiled a large archive of letters and memorials after Lincoln's death.

Herndon focuses on the personal Lincoln, and it is especially his observations about Lincoln's religious skepticism and family life that so disturb those who would have Lincoln embalmed like Lenin. Herndon gives us a vivid Lincoln, and if you like good biography, you will be impressed. The book was clearly a labor of love, and that fact still comes through more than a century after it was written.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective of Lincoln.......2002-10-25

You know its funny to be writing a review about a book that was written so long ago, but I think this review may help encourage others who haven't already been acquainted with this wonderful book to take a look at it. It offers a very human view of Lincoln before he became the president of the United States. I agree with the fact that it doesn't reveal a lot about the civil war, but you know what, that was the authors intention. William Herndon, Lincoln's Law partner for about 20 years, knew that other people were going to focus on the war years far better than he could (Like John Hay and John Nicolay who worked for Lincoln in the White House) therefore, his focus is to reveal Lincoln as he was as a young man, but mostly during his years living in springfield, illinois. Its really quite entertaining, and at times comical to read how quirky he was back in those days. Sure, Herndon has been criticized about his biography over the past 100 plus years its been out in circulation, particularly his whole take on the Ann Rutledge affair and attitude on Mary Todd Lincoln. Regardless of that, I think he honestly attempts to provide an accurate portrayal of Lincoln without holding back any details. He wants to reveal Lincoln the way he viewed the man through his own eyes--as an ordinary man who had faults like anybody else--who went through tough, turbulent, and dark times--had a sense of humor--had insecurities--but in the end remained an honest to goodness human being who struggled to make his mark in this world. Trust me folks, this is a fascinating read. You will have a difficult time trying to stop reading.

5 out of 5 stars One and Only.......2002-10-07

There are, it is said, more books about Lincoln than there are about anybody but Jesus. Every man setting out to write about Lincoln has an idea of him, a shadow to look for Lincoln in and the huge weight of tradition and history on his back while writing. Even Nicolay and Hay, his secretaries, and authors of the voluminous collected papers which are probably the best source on the Presidency, only knew the man in office, once he had enfolded himself, if you will, inside his great ambition. Herndon knew the man. He shared his office with him, a law practise which consisted of Lincoln throwing the case notes and money into his hat before putting it on to his head, and splitting all the money down the middle. Herndon also went around talking to everyone who knew Lincoln while he was alive before they died.

There are flaws to this book. Herndon drank, so Lincoln didn't take him to Washington with him. This book tells you nothing about the war, about Lincoln's policies, or even a great deal about Lincoln's debates with Douglas, say. But. And it is a great but. This is the only book that gives you a smell of the goofy, tall, funny, awkward, galumphing and generally likeable oddball that emerged as the greatest leader this country ever had. This is the only book I would advise an actor to read if he was going to undertake to play Abe Lincoln. All the other books describe a monument. This one describes a man who went on dates, told dirty jokes and had a funny way of laying his legs across the desk and reading upside down. The rest is second hand.

This folksy treatment occasionally stumbles (often due to ghostwriter Jesse Weik rather than Lincoln's law partner Herndon), but is a rewarding read. It is a wonderful collection of stories and memories. Its strength resides in Herndon's account of Lincoln's life in Illinois. Herndon did extensive interviews with persons who knew the young Lincoln, supplemented by correspondence with them.

4 out of 5 stars The real Lincoln?.......2007-01-31

This is a interesting book from the perspective of someone who knew Lincoln personally. The only area's of the book that I didn't like were the drawn out speeches and letters that Herndon places within the book. I also wish that Herndon would have written more about Lincoln's time as President, which Herndon ends the book just shortly after Lincoln takes Office. Other than that I found the book to be very enjoyable to read and I reccomend it to anyone that loves to read about Abraham Lincoln.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Human Portrait of Lincoln.......2006-06-21

This book should be an essential part of anyone's study of America's sixteenth president. William Herndon was Lincoln's law partner for nearly two decades. He presents a very human portrait of his friend and colleague. Herndon spent many years gathering the information offered in this volume. The book itself has its place in history: it was here that the legend of the youthful Lincoln's romance and supposed engagement to the sweet and lovely Ann Rutledge was first published in book form. Fact or myth? Decide for yourself. Herndon had his prejudices. He was definitely anti-Mary Todd, for instance. Yet his efforts--to which he dedicated much of the latter part of his life and which nearly impoverished him--are worthy of praise, and his deep and abiding affection for his lost friend comes through the pages. Highly recommended.

A CRUCIAL GUIDE TO BREAST CANCER SURVIVAL FOR A NEW GENERATION OF WOMEN

The first comprehensive survival guide for breast cancer in younger women

Each year thousands of young women are diagnosed with breast cancer, yet virtually all of the information available on breast cancer focuses on the concerns of older women. Fighting for Our Future is the first comprehensive "survival guide" for young women living with breast cancer, their families, those who care for them, and young women with a family history of cancer who need to be aware of their risks, not only as older women but also right now.

This important book provides a close look at vital issues for this community, including:

With strong medical backing from a medical advisory board, including George Sledge, M.D., director of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation; Jeanne Petrek, M.D., of Memorial Sloan-Kettering; and Harold Burstein, Ph.D., M.D., of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, this text is packed with information that is vital to understanding the complexities of breast cancer.

A companion book to an hour-long documentary film airing on Lifetime Television in October 2002, and released in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Fighting for Our Future will be a welcome weapon of awareness for all womenone that is greatly needed in the battle against this disease.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. The day after my diagnosis my husband and I went to the bookstore to find books on the topic. This book jumped out at me and, out of a variety of books and other research, this one provided the most useful, best written information on breast cancer and breast cancer considerations, particularly for a young woman. The survivor stories/vignettes let me know I was not alone and gave me hope that I could survive.

5 out of 5 stars THE reference source for young women.......2002-10-23

Not only is this book the most comprehensive, unbiased book on breast cancer in young women I have ever read, I applaud Beth Murphy for taking the time to focus on YOUNG WOMEN with breast cancer, a sorely under-served group. This book takes the reader inside the lives of young survivors. While touching, it is never over-the-top dramatic, and it certainly isn't sappy. Murphy defines the risks of diagnosis in young women in realistic terms - the good with the bad - and does the same for treatment issues with regards to young women. Furthermore, the author doesn't beat around the bush getting to the point that while we've made great advances in breast cancer treatment, research for young women is terribly lacking. She goes on to explain the implications a woman under 40 faces when diagnosed.
Astoundingly, Murphy even manages to discuss the controversial political issues of breast cancer without ever stepping up on a soapbox. She sticks to the facts about who says what, and what questions still go unanswered.

This book is a must have for any woman who wishes to get a real understanding of her health risks where breast cancer is concerned.
Every doctor (particularly those still preaching "you're too young to have breast cancer"!!), nurse, mammography technician, breast health specialist, and breast cancer researcher should read this book and take its message to their jobs.
Every woman under 40 diagnosed with breast cancer, every mother, sister, father, brother, friend, and boyfriend of a young survivor should buy this book immediately.

There is nothing else on the market that even comes close.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for women of all ages!.......2002-10-01

This book, yes is very touching and quite moving but I think it is the educational aspect of the subject of breast cancer that I found to be the most beneficial from having read the book. The author takes you in a different direction on breast cancer, one that we haven't really seen in most other books on the subject. We are taken on a journey through the lives of these very brave women who were diagnosed with the disease at such a YOUNG age-as we usually see it in older women. I have, like most young women, thought breast cancer is not a real concern for me at my age. I have, until now, relied on my doctor to let me know what health issues he should pursue as given my current medical history ... I am glad I read this book-I am certainly more informed as will my doctor also be during my next visit.

As I felt the black cloud of despair descending on me and I could no longer smile or feel any good feelings. I knew I was in trouble. I cared about nothing, did nothing, and even stopped eating. I was slowly sinking to the point of no return as the tragic events surrounding me became too much to bear. Then, suddenly, my survival instinct kicked in and I rose out of the nightmare long enough to realize that I was the only one that could bring myself out of the darkness and into the light. So I began doing what I've always loved to do. Write and communicate. I wanted to vent and let my anger out in a socially acceptable way. I wanted to let other women know how I felt dealing with breast cancer and how I was coping with the diagnosis and with other tragedies as well. It was perfect therapy. What started as a journal evolved into a book.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Book For Victims Of Breast Cancer.......2004-03-19

For anyone whom is touched by breast cancer this book is worth reading. As the author takes us through her battle with breast cancer the reader discovers the many health battles she has had and a new crisis appears just three weeks after F.T. Hashem has been diagnosed with the devistating disease. While coping with breast cancer the author loses her beloved father suddenly to a stroke. The man that helped her through all her life-long battles; her greatest supporter was dead. This book will strengthen and encourage other women with breast cancer as they read just how Hashem marches on to fight the battle with only her Dad's spirit and teachings to guide her. Of course there was much more help from God and the self-help program she designed. Not only is this book inspiring but will give those suffering with breast cancer many ideas on how to cope with the disease.
