Too philosophical and ethereal.......1999-08-04

I found this book to be too loaded down with philosophy and musings and not practical enough to be useful. The writing style reminds one more of a book of poetry than of a book on organizational structure and design. If one wants to read a book on how to succeed within various organizations and how to understand office politics, I recommend Kelly's "How to Be a Star at Work," Taub's "Work Smart" and even "The Idiot's Guide to Office Politics." I did not find what I was looking for in this tome and was very disappointed.

TOP SECRET.......2005-03-07

At first glance this may seem like any other trading book however I can assure you after much exhaustive computer analysis there is much more here than meets the eye. What many people do not know is that the exact methods which Toby Crabel uses for managing billions of dollars are disclosed within this book. I have in my possession due diligence documents which state his exact trading methodology and markets. I have pursued and collected almost everything that is available on the subject of Toby Crabel and his career. This book deserves a very slow in-depth and at sometimes painful read through over and over and over again! Great book in 1990, but not unique anymore.......2004-05-25

Well I bought this book in 1991, when I was just learning about technical trading. The ideas were mostly unique then, or at least had not been published together yet in one volume, from what I know.

The main ideas in the book have to do with expansion and contraction in volatility and moves off the open (Opening Range
Breakouts).

Toby is a successful hedge fund manager, having worked for Victor Niederhoffer before starting his own company. Toby's
returns are good, but his risk management is far better. Toby's funds have grown primarily due to his excellent risk management
skills as opposed to his returns. In layman's terms this means that he hardly ever loses money but he doesn't make much for his clients. This is actually fairly unique and he should be commended for finding this niche in the business.

I should say that I do know both Toby and Victor, although they are just industry acquaintances, not friends, and I have not seen them in a many years.

For young struggling traders, the ideas in this book are available cheaper in other books or on the internet. They are also known as volatility breakout strategies. I suggest you pay not more than $200 for this book. If you can't buy it for less
than that, look elsewhere.

If you are a collector, than feel free to pay up for this
book.

Crabel manages $2 Billion for a reason.......2003-09-04

The book is basically a series of studies on reoccuring patterns in the stock and commodities markets. Crabel found that volatility is mean-reverting in the speculative markets. Just as night follows day, volatile markets follow quiet markets. There are more than a dozen robust volatility patterns evaluated and explained. The only real weakness I can see is that Crabel used point values instead of percentage values. This was a common mistake of professionals back in the early 1990's. You will need to convert these. For example, if the S&P 500 is currently meeting the criteria for one of the low-volatility "set ups" then place a buy stop 2.5 points above the open and a sell stop 2.5 points below the open. If filled set your mechanical stop-loss 1.5 points outside the current days existing range.

Well, 2.5 points was a reasonable move back in 1991 (when the S&P was trading around 400). But 2.5 points is just noise today. To adjust simply divide 2.5 points by what-ever the S&P was trading at back in 1991 to get a percentage. Then multiply this percentage by today's S&P level (around 1000). This will result is something like 6.2 points. Do the same thing for your stop-loss as well.

Crabel's logic was/is sound but the research in the book should have been based on percentage moves. These are what have held reasonably stable over time.

Also, to be successful you will need to be able to track at least 75-100 stocks. Otherwise you will not get enough set-ups to maintain proper diversification. Volatile, liquid stocks obviously work best. A program like Neovest or Radarscreen (Tradestation) will be very helpful.

Unique and Innovative.......2002-06-20

What the readers here say is true. I bought a used copy for about 1100 a few years back and was well worth it. An absolute tour-de-force of ideas and studies that are in use by Toby Crabel himself (he runs a hedge fund). The primary method he uses (ORB) is actually used by the majority of Hedge Funds today. I do reccomend that the reader check other auction sites for better deals.

Presents Unique Ideas Not Seen In Other Books.......1999-08-15

Toby Crabel has written a great book. The patterns he discusses are great for swing trading and day trading. You will learn about narrow range days, inside days, bull hooks, bear hooks and so on. These patterns can easily be translated into most commercial trading software. This is one of the few books I like. Even if you decide not to trade these patterns they can still be helpful in predicting market behavior. Please do not think that Mr.Crabel discusses double tops and double bottoms, head and shoulders and all that other garbage. However, you will find very unique ideas that you probably never considered. I find it very interesting that the least reviewed trading books on this website are often the best ones.

Enjoyable Informative Look at Jefferson and Poetry.......2007-10-14

This is an excellent book. At first I thought the book was a copilation of poetry written by Jefferson. However, it includes poems Jefferson collected in his scrapbooks whiel president. As such it provides glimpses into the thought of the era and Jefferson's thoughts. There are many really interesting poems, soem by prominent authors and many from relatively unknown or anonymous authors.

Good survey of American racial thought........2001-06-22

The editor feels that by associating these 100+ excerpts with the word "racist" he can instantly refute them. On the contrary there is much here for reasoned minds to agree with--especially in the selections by Murray/Herrnstein, Shockley, Jensen. George and D'Souza. Certainly some of the older racial tracts are just silly but much of the modern writings hold true. Even some of the predictions made many years ago, like in Ross' "The Old World and the New" (1914) about the future of America have proven quite accurate. Joshi also peppers the book with some egalitarian essays meant to counter the rest, but despite the pleasant platitudes, these sections do little for the book and basically attempt to refute the "racists" with not much more than a few doses of "shame on you" scorn and a few shots of saccharine sweet sentimentality. No positive proof for equality is presented, but then again, egalitarianism has never required proof for their beliefs.

Garbage..........2000-11-15

I have not seen some much garbage and simple stupidity in one book in a long time. This book is full of half "truths", misleading statements,and dubious and shady quotes. It is hard for me to understand (which I don not) how can anyone even bother to waste his/her time writing this stuff. Doesn't the author has anything better to do? I guess not!!!!!!

Inspirational.......1999-09-20

This book is very inspiring for those who love humanity. It contains a lot of inspirational material. It is a nice historical completement to books such as: Why Race matters (by Michael Levin); Race, Evolution and Behavior : A Life History Perspective (by J. P. Rushton); The Real American Dilemma: Race, Immigration and the Future of America (by Jared Taylor.); Duke's My awakening. I especially recommend Joshi's book to anyone who cares about America.

The previous reviewer from Louisiana is the kind of racist created and nurtured by the theorists, psuedo-scientists and false prophets, featured in Joshi's book, who attemp to justify their people's oppressive acts. The illogic, the straining to defend the indefensible is all on display. Joshi's book is extremely valuable in exposing the real founding creed of the USof A - oppress, deny and blame the victim.

Superb, concise anthology -- incisive and readable........2001-03-05

It seems all but impossible that we need yet another anthology of Thomas Jefferson. Even so, this calm, judicious selection by Peter S. Onuf, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History at the University of Virginia and one of the leading Jefferson scholars of our time, fills a gap in the literature and may well be recommended as a superb beginning place to understand Jefferson and his place in history.

Onuf's focus is on Jefferson as a political thinker and actor, and his expert choices of passages from Jefferson's writings highlight the main contours of Jefferson's thought as it stayed constant and as it changed over time. His selections span the full range of Jefferson's political career -- from hsi first major pamphlet "A Summary View of the Rights of British America" (1774), to his drafting of the Declaration of Independence and his work on the revision of Virginia's laws in the late 1770s, to his painful two terms as governor (1779-1781), to his writing of NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA, to his diplomatic service in France (1784-1789), to his unhappy years as Secretary of State (1789-1793) and Vice President (1797-1801), to his Presidency (1801-1809), and finally his struggles with the roles of senior statesman, ex-President, educational reformer, and sage (1809-1826). Onuf does not shrink from examining the contradictions that loom large in Jefferson's words and deeds. His lucid and enlightening introduction draws on a major article he did in 1993, "The Scholars' Jefferson," revised and updated to take account of more recent scholarship.

Two gaps only mar this fine book. One is its lack of a chronology for those who are unfamiliar with Jefferson's life and career, and the other is its lack of an index. Perhaps these deficiencies can be remedied in future editions of this fine, valuable, and otherwise highly useful volume.
