What really grabbed me at first glance was the vivid colors and attention to the details in the numerous photographs in this book.

Ms. Brennan confided to me recently in a chatroom interview at the French cuisine site that she gained about ten pounds while testing the recipes for the book.

The recipes are all very traditional dishes you'd find in homes and bistros all over France and are simple enough for a confident and even a new cook to recreate.

Along with the delicious, hearty French recipes are little anecdotes sprinkled throughout that shed light on useful things like using creme fraiche. A perfect gift for a francophile, cook or someone who loves good classic cuisine without hours of preparation involved. The book is so vibrant and lovely you'll want to leave it on the coffee table to make your guests salivate while they wait for dinner.

This is quite possibly the best cookbook I have ever read! Not only does it have beautiful pictures and wonderful, EASY, delicious recipes, but it has delightful information on the customs, countryside, and people of France. It's a cookbook I actually USE all the time!

It's Not Bad, But..........2002-02-26

it's not great either. I thought it was better than the other "1 star" reviewers. I believe I enjoyed it better because I had no expectation for this book to really teach me anything spectacular.

His work is not too complex, it's just that he presents so many indicators, and then combines them. I thought his use of Kurtosis was interesting and some of his ideas are worth further research if it complements your current work. If you've already devoured your favorite books and are looking to increase your stock in short-term trading ideas, it would be worth a read.

I have to agree with the other reviewer who said that his success in theRobbins Championship came from just a few profitably outlying trades.

The book's indicators are not for the mathmatically challenged, written for Tradestation. That is the majority of the book - BUT, the systems used to win the trading championship were very simple and basic. Not these complex formulas. Looking at the equity curve and his spotlighted trades, it looks like he got lucky, catching the right 2 markets and 3 - 5 trades that made the contest for him.

The sections on setting up your screens and computer are obviously very out of date. Nothing special here, you're not missing anything.

A mathematically complex method of predicting turns.......1998-08-30

Jensen has described mathematical methods for measuring, and then for predicting, changes in price momentum. This book is not light reading, but the effort invested leads to a method for computer-generated signals which predict when a price series will reverse. This concept can be a powerful tool, with signals which are leading or coincident to turns. Although Jensen deals with other aspects of trading, this is in no way a book for beginners. For the serious student of the market, it is more than worth the trouble.

Unless you're a computer programmer, this book will be of little use to the commodities trader. I felt the book is inherently dishonest, as the book doesn't warn you a computer is absolutely necessary in order to make use of the ideas and programs within. If computers are up your alley and expertise, perhaps you will find the book worthwhile - although more probably you will not

Mutual Fund Investment Bible.......2000-07-31

This is a step-by-step mutual fund investing guide, designed to help investors create a $10,000 portfolio. No other book I know provides such a clear-cut path to profiting with mutual funds. James Lowell's writing voice is engaging, intelligent, and refreshingly free of finance jargon. This is a primer for people who have more on their minds than their mutual fund returns. One of the very few books of this genre I could actually relate to, as someone with a healthy skepticism towards the American dream of riches and retirement. Recommend.

Starts well, Quickly goes downhill.......2000-05-22

This book begins well with a discussion of how to figure out a budget and how to save. It is very strong here.

The author takes you on a whirlwind business jargon session describing the different markets and sub markets. I think it fails here because this material is offered in a dense collection of paragraphs and chapters that serve more to confuse than illuminate. His descriptions of on-line resources is good but his chapter on how to use excel to track funds is impossible to replicate. I really enjoyed the beginning sections of this book but found it really disappointing soon thereafter.

I say 2 stars because I liked the discussion of on-line resources as well as the discussion of budgeting.

It's so bad, it's not even wrong..........2005-12-06

There are a number of very good books out on the Gulf War, the best probably being Rick Atkinson's "Crusade". This volume is not one of those books. Where atkinson and other historians use research, first person interviews and historical archives, Clark uses rumor, innuendo, and his own imagination. Many of his "facts" are simply unsubstatiated fabrications. Others are products of his imagination: "The only way this could have happened is if..."

This book, like other volumes by Clark, Chomsky, et al, will strongly appeal to people with a lot of strong opinions and a lack of historical or current affairs knowledge, who are simply looking for arguments to bolster their own predjudices.

Shocking truth about a war the West should be ashamed of.......2003-06-18

Since the British lost their grip on the Middle-East, the U.S. have taken over. Mr. Clark very accurately describes how the role of the U.S. during the Gulf war fits into the bigger picture of how the U.S. have tried (and succeeded) for decades to remain the world's number one power. At first, I only wanted to read the book because I had some little doubts about the objectivity of the information that we received via the media. On the whole, I agreed that action was needed, and that the war against Iraq could not be avoided. Until I read this book...It was like shells fell from my eyes. I realise now that not only there was a lot more violence used against Iraq than we were told, and that the purpose of this war was not to get Iraq out of Kuwait (which was indeed the 19th province of Iraq before England "created" Kuwait out of it in 1922), but to cripple an entire nation for decades to come. But also that this war was carefully planned by the U.S. for years. Mr. Clark shows this with countless examples, that make you say to yourself: "yes, I always had doubts about that". One of them is that although the CIA was already aware for sixth months that during the Iran-Iraq war, Iraq used poison gas against the kurds in the North of Iraq, it never revealled this information to the press until after the Iran-Iraq ceasefire in 1988, 3 hours before an Iraqi delegate arrived in the U.S. and gave a press conference. This delegate was rather taken by surprise by the questions he got at this press-conference. I can hardly exagerate the need for everybody to read this book, and learn what price the Iraqi people had to pay to secure U.S. access to cheap oil...that's what bothers me most: this war was not about democracy or human rights, it was about money and power only. And by the way: all this talk about U.S. attempts to eliminate Mr. Hussein is, of course, nonsense. The U.S. still need him in the saddle because he gives the U.S. the excuse for presence in the Gulf and maintaining the economic sanctions. READ THIS BOOK!!! And see, among other things, that not only the Iraqi people were informed very subjectively by their media. We were also by ours.

essential for Gulf War erudition.......2001-03-09

The book is written by a respected US Gov Official. He has nothing to gain from writing this book but the contentment of disseminating the reality of US involvement in the middle east. Since writing the book, he has been chastised for being unpatriotic and even anti-semitic - all these reaction being confirmations of guilt. There is little subjectivity in this book - in fact it is not invigorating. Rather, Clark works through hard fact, in an appropriate level of detail, to describe just how misled the general public can be about war, and the incredible effects of sensationalist media and gov propaganda on the collective opinion. Read It.

An overview by hindsight.......2002-04-24

This book basically contends that although the leaders of the two countries acted like school yard bullies squaring off that it was George Bush who kept pushing towards war each time Saddam Hussein tried to slow down the current.

Among some of the interesting items presented against President Bush was the fact that he initially seemed to be pushed around by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who told him at a meeting that he couldn't stand for Hussein's invasion. In the beginning he wobbled and changed stances on the invasion frequently. His public and private statements through diplomatic channels were contradicting. At first he conveyed to Saddam Hussein (before the invasion of Kuwait) that the U.S. didn't care what Hussein did and would not take action if he invaded because it was an Arab problem. But when the invasion occurred he took action against it. Second, President Bush pushed Sadia Arabia to house U.S. troops on their soil even though the Saudi's were against it. Then he announced to the world that the Saudi's had requested the U.S. troops to help protect their land. Third, President Bush announced that the troops in Saudi Arabia would be there for defense of that country only and denied any intention of an invasion force to push back Iraqi troops. This too, turned out to be untrue.

On the opposite side of the spectrum it seems that, initially, Saddam Hussein's grievances were somewhat legitimate, although not for a full invasion of Kuwait. Saddam had come to the U.S. for help and was told to handle it any way he wanted, it was not our concern. You have to understand that in the years before the Gulf War the U.S. government was helping Saddam Hussein in his war with Iran. There was an issue of Kuwait stealing Iraqi oil by a "slant drill" in an oil field. The issue of Kuwait owning islands that blocked the ability of Iraq to transport their oil out of the Persian Gulf (these were given to Kuwait by the British). Atleast four times Hussein had offered a peace agreement and to remove his soldiers from Kuwait after the invasion through many nations, including Jordan and Russia, all to be turned down by the U.S.

This is what I think!.......2003-04-03

The Book I read was George Bush's War. The Author of this book is Jean Edward Smith. I think that Smith is a very smart man or he's got some inside connections, because he has information on meetings that happened incognito, if you know what I mean. I also thought this book was exceptionally educational. The reason why I felt this book is educational is because it provided me with a different sense of humor than I am used too, while getting some strong information in-bedded in my head. I felt that the main plot in this book is about one person, George bush, rounding up a group of people to rise against Iraq. I feel that the strength of this book is when the U.S walked up on the Iraqi people. It also talks about how Iraq placed Saddam on a pedestal, as a hero and how he was viewed that way by the entire Arab world. This book included "behind the scenes" interviews, and information that had not been released to the public. It had real life interviews. This book contains many details that are irrelevant to my research, but over all I would say this book is good. I feel that this book is good for writing papers or reports, but if you want to learn a lot about the war I would recommend you to another book. Thanks

Book Review.......2001-03-10

I read George Bush's War by Smith. I liked most of it. The thesis of the book is that George Bush was the sole figure in rallying opposition against Iraq.

The strengths of the book is that the book contains good material on why Saddam was regarded as a hero in the Arab world. He gives a pretty good history of the Middle East. Also, I like some of the "behind the scenes" information of the campaign against Iraq.

The weaknesses of the book are glaring. First, there are too many quotes. I do not really care what the assistant to the US Ambassador to some country that I never heard of says about something that an equally minute representative said about Saddam Hussien, just to give an example. Keep in mind that not ALL quotes were bad. Another thing is that the book STOPS at the bombing of Baghdad. The questions of why did Jordan support Iraq or Did Iraq and Iran mend fences were never mentioned. The major weaknes is that there was not enough historical distance at that time to justify writing a detailed work. In political terms, the book is above average. In military terms, it is pretty weak.

Hess explores the ways in which Presidents Truman, Johnson, and Bush took America into these wars. He recreates the unfolding crises in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf, explaining why the presidents and their advisers concluded that the use of military power was ultimately necessary to uphold U.S. security.
