      Book Description

This book provides a current collection of edited cases, using the court's language, for courses in both business law and the legal environment of business. The cases included were selected for their timeliness, impact, coherence, and diversity. Along with updating the often dramatic changes that have taken place in the law over the past few years, this book also provides students with the opportunity to explore cases in the court's own language in an expanded format.

        Book Description

A practical and inspiring guide to transforming your passion into a thriving business--and a fulfilling life.

As people have come to yearn for more fulfilling and creative work, many are realizing their dreams by leaving the corporate life behind and creating businesses around the things they love. In Not Just a Living, Mark Henricks explores the genesis of this cultural and social phenomenon and offers a comprehensive approach for assessing your own potential, for "taking the plunge," and for building a business that helps you fulfill both personal and professional aspirations.

Combining the authority of firsthand experience, colorful and engaging stories from the front lines, and a variety of diagnostic and planning tools, Henricks shows you how to determine whether the entrepreneurial route is right for you, recognize opportunities, overcome obstacles, plan your course, and launch and sustain your business--whether it's a solo venture out of your garage or a multi-million-dollar enterprise.

        3 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Effort.......2007-02-15

I really liked the introduction of the concept of a "lifestyle entrepreneur." Too many times, people go into business to get more control, more balance in their lives, and wind up creating environments for themselves that give them far less of each. Making the conscious choice to have a lifestyle is an excellent point of discussion.

Unfortunately I think the book actually seeks to be far too comprehensive in the mechanics of starting and operating a business. In the process, the treatment of these areas is superficial and feels off track.

There is plenty of literature on the mechanics of business, and some commentary on the distinct tack a lifestyle entrepreneur would have to take is definitely needed. The unique aspects required - keeping operating costs low, work to profit ratio high - are good areas to cover, but the book attempts to introduce basic business concepts where only aspects applicable to this lifestyle may be needed.

Overall, the book was a good read - definitely more supportive than science. But, that's okay. I think this book should be supportive, discussion oriented, inspirational, and I felt it should have had more of that. The attempt at being mathematical, business tutorial-ish felt like it really didn't fit. Instead pointing to some basic resources on this - such as the Appendix does - with maybe a chapter on the seriousness of staying on task in business operation (still discussion oriented) may have done the trick. (Because in the end the only way you'll remain supporting your lifestyle is to cover costs and meet personal expenses.)

A discussion (along the lines of Barbara Sher) where it just may be many small things that you do - many services you provide - could enhance the usability for active minds that don't settle on one thing to do.

Nevertheless, the book is worth the read if this is a new concept to you. Funding an enjoyable lifestyle is a very much needed idea in today's world of overdoing-work and burning-out cycles. The author has done our culture a great service in bringing clarity to these ideas.

        4 out of 5 stars Misleading title--but a decent effort!.......2004-11-13

First things first, this is *hardly* a "complete guide," the title is very misleading. Rather it is a very general sketch of the main risks & rewards of freelancing it or building your own business.

The scope is very wide and the tone fairly realistic, but (contrary to the title) there is very little of the nitty gritty detail that taking the plunge would actually require.

That said, its a decent read for people toying with the possibility of striking out on their own: It answers a host of intriguing questions like, "Do freelancers\self-employed work more or less hours than their traditional counterparts?" Or, "How do freelancers\self-employed survive periodic\seasonal income patterns?"

It also mentioned some challenges (and benefits) you probably wouldn't think of on your own. For example, it reminded me that the 12% FICA social security tax is normally paid half & half (6% and 6%) by an employer and employee. But if you strike it out on your own, you must cover both sides of the tax yourself.

Lastly, I would add this read is pretty inspiring, filled with success stories from people who made the jump, and these stories in turn give you some *ideas* about how you might carve a business niche out of some activity you enjoy doing. There's definitely some creative brainstorming value here.

This is a good read for a dreamer who wants to ground those dreams with a little reality, and see where that leaves them...

3 out of 5 stars Emotion over facts.......2002-12-13

Mr. Henricks wrote a book with a different perspective on starting a business; Instead of focusing on the manual hard work of starting a business, he focused on the emotional happiness that starting a business can bring. This happiness comes from being your own boss and being able to do more of the things that make you happy. I found the first couple of chapters interesting although Mr. Henricks repeated the same benefits and stories of individuals that made their lives better, which in turn made the book repeat itself.
The last third of the book, Mr. Henricks started to focus on the financial topics. He started to analyze balance sheets and answer questions like "what is revenue?", I then found that this book lost its goal and audience; The goal being emotionally focused on your own business would help you succeed. The audience seemed, at first, to be for individuals who have gone through the initial phases of starting a business and needed a reminder why they started. The financial analysis of a business lost that objective and made this book into a beginner guide to business with a fluff beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Revealing and Instructive Guide.......2002-11-22

"Being a lifestyle entrepreneur is not so much about being in business as it is being you," writes journalist Mark Henricks in this lovely new book. His guide for budding entrepreneurs straddles a fundamental challenge for books for this audience. How do you address the dynamic personal element of this process while answering the myriad and often generic questions that face all entrepreneurs? Henricks recognizes that starting a business engenders two simultaneous learning processes. Individuals must develop literacy with the business process itself, while developing a personal understanding of what you care about, what you're good at, and so forth. And success stems from mastery in both areas.

Henricks, a veteran journalist in this field, addresses this dual learning curve by grounding much of Not Just A Living in his own experience. He writes about the choices he has faced in going solo, becoming a successful owner of his writing in the market. His book does an excellent job of sharing a wealth of instructive information for budding lifestyle entrepreneurs. He tells great stories. He provides spot-on information on everything from using technology to mastering your balance sheet. For folks early in the process of starting up a biz, I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Living it Up!.......2002-10-27

Seven years ago today (Oct. 27, 1995), a high school friend of mine and I founded Healthy Options, the first natural products store in Manila. I have a marketing degree and had spent 15 years working for other people both in the Philippines and the United Kingdom. Healthy Options was my baby and my first plunge into going on my own.

Seven years later, we have grown into 10 stores with almost 100 full time employees and Healthy Options has become the leader in the natural products industry in the Philippines. As we celebrate our anniversary this month, I find Mark Henricks' book simply priceless and serendipitous. It's a timely reminder for me as to why we put up Healthy Options all those years ago. As a business grows and expands fast, it's very easy to get carried away and start thinking "corporate". At the beginning of this year, I started having mixed feelings and a bit lost as I kept asking myself, seven good healthy years, now what do I do? I'm therefore so thankful to have found the book as it reminded me why I went into business in the first place and it has re-focused my priorities. Thanks Mark. I find the Seven Myths of Small Business Ownership invaluable. And I fully agree that growth, while very important, shouldn't be the ultimate goal of an entrepreneur.

"Not Just A Living" is also a great benchmark for us. We did almost everything Mark Henrick said in the book (eventually) and got many things right (but not always the first time). I particularly feel vindicated about giving franchise (which I strongly feel against) when one of the entreprenuers related her sad experience about the uncontrollable franchisees she had which resulted in her going out of business.

All in all, it's an insightful and enjoyable read. Now I wish Mark Henricks would consider giving lectures about Lifestyle Entrepreneurship to spread the "gospel" even wider.

Roger Verge's Cooking with Fruit is filled with luscious color photos and tempting recipes you can almost eat with your eyes. You can also enjoy sensual, poetic entries describing 33 fruits, from apples and apricots to mulberries and litchis. Certainly, it is easy to imagine a waiter at Roger Verge's world-famous restaurant, Le Moulin de Mougins, respectfully setting one of these colorful, creative desserts in front of you.

While reading this book is entrancing, it clearly is a work written in French and translated into English by someone not quite fluent in the language. This has its charms, but requires extra reading time, and some degree of caution in the kitchen. For example, few American cooks know what it means to mix an egg "with sugar and cream until it binds together." Then there are Corinth grapes--a fruit little known outside of France. Still, many other fruits are more familiar, and cooks can peruse 130 recipes. It's not against the rules to make substitutions to save time, such as using your own favorite tart pastry recipe in place of the one in this book, which is made with a whopping five egg yolks and a cup of butter. Then the joys of Verge's inspired Pear Tart with Cocoa can be yours. And if the Banana-Pineapple Fruit Juice, which calls for the puree of four pineapple slices and a banana, is too thick to sip, you can add a splash of rum or apple juice to thin the consistency. For these, and treats like Fresh Peach Mousse, a little tweaking is well worth the effort. --Dana Jacobi

While not as good as Verge's vegetable book, there are few disappointments. My main criticisms is that it isn't as well organized as his vegetable book and the children's recipes at the end are not well written. (Try to make the Pinapple Christmas tree and you'll see what I mean.) Nevertheless, more than worth the money. As with all of his books, many recipes have found their way into dishes that I frequently prepare. A must for culinary francophiles.

With keen insight and an unexpected good humor, this 1922 volume on the vagaries of the stock market and the psychology of those who play it is still required reading for investors today. From harnessing Hoyne's "speculative force"'-the tendency to transform into advantageous action the result of using one's brain-to overcoming greed and fear, taking advantage of news and gossip, and making the rules and principles work for you, contemporary speculators will find much to enjoy and learn here. American author THOMAS TEMPLE HOYNE (1875-1946) also wrote Intrigue on the Upper Level: A Story of Crime, Love, Adventure and Revolt in 2050 A.D. (1934), the humorous On Pilgrimage (1938) and other books.

Michael Cunningham believes online alliances are one of the most effective tools for developing the power and leverage needed to prosper in today's business world. An avid practitioner of such arrangements in his own Harvard Computing Group consulting firm, Cunningham presents a strong argument for these affiliations, along with a comprehensive guide to their creation in Partners.com. "Today, it is no longer possible for firms to do it all alone," he writes. "Whether it is hardware for a computer system, a hosting service to provide e-commerce capabilities, or a distribution partner that will sell and service products, partners are essential." Showing precisely why these associations are particularly potent in areas like sales, finance, and distribution, Cunningham details the steps involved in their formation and implementation, beginning with the partnership he considers most essential: the one that must be forged between organizations and their employees before any of these others can even hope to succeed. Drawing upon winning coalitions created by B2B and B2C endeavors such as eBay, GoFish.com and Convistint, Cunningham then delves into everything from the technology involved to the contracts required. The result is a thorough examination aimed at those serious about finding innovative ways to improve their operations. --Howard Rothman

              Book Description

Partnerships are the lifeblood of e-commerce. Innovative alliances such as private exchanges, self-service partnerships, syndicated e-commerce, affiliate programs, and e-learning forums are today's new competitive advantage. In Partners.com, Michael Cunningham shows businesses how to forge leading-edge Internet partnerships fast--with competitors, customers, suppliers, distributors, employees, and other businesses--and foster an environment that will allow them to flourish. From Amazon's consumer affiliate program to General Motors' state-of-the-art business-to-business mega-hub, COVISINT, Cunningham demonstrates how relationships that would have taken years to develop prior to the Internet are now taking days and hours. As businesses focus on finding profitable strategies, partnerships will not be just one option, they will be the new weapons for succeeding in e-commerce.

5 out of 5 stars A REAL WORLD GUIDE TO PARTNERSHIPS.......2001-06-21

Complex topics such as partnerships tend to be covered in a very fragmented manner. Partners.com does not have this problem. Cunningham ably deals with the people, process, technology and market issues that forge partnerships, but also how to manage, measure and change them. Rarely are these areas covered in sufficient detail, but here there is a roadmap with milestones and strategies that are working in the marketplace. Partners.com does for partnerships what Patti Seybold's Customers.com did for customer relationships. A classic!

5 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the .com in the title- this is for all.......2001-06-20

This book is a prize! For those that are looking for the details behind partnerships the information here is not only relevant, but very comprehensive. The mixture of technology, strategy and culture required to pull of good partnerships is difficult for organizations trying to make it happen. Cunningham provides not only a great roadmap, but illustrated with real world examples of what has and has not worked. Do not be fooled by the .com in the title, this book is targeted at all businesses. I particularly liked the sections on self-service Partnerships and the "most important partners, your staff". A practical piece with great strategic insight. Organizations will be able to use this to hone their competitiveness, internal and external consultants will buy to emulate all that has been learned on this topic.

There are more than 50,000–and growing–private foundations in the United States holding assets worth more than $230 billion. Private foundations are subject to a unique and complex set of (mostly tax) regulations that govern everything from how much money they give away to their investment policies and procedures. This much needed, annually updated manual explicates a wide range of tax rules and regulations for these foundations and prepares them for the increasing scrutiny of the IRS. Co-authored by a lawyer and tax accountant, the revised and expanded second edition of this highly respected guide includes practical tax compliance suggestions and in-depth legal explanations, line-by-line instructions, sample-filled IRS forms, and complete citations.

4 out of 5 stars Must Have if considering your own foundation.......2000-03-29

This book comes with a hefty price - I was hesitant. If you are considering the establishment of your own private foundation, this book is a must. It is fairly heavy with the legaleze, but required when considering the thorough discussions of establishing and maintaining a foundation with respect to the applicable IRS tax code. Each topic is documented and sample tax forms are illustrated. Highly recommended - needs to be a little more user friendly for the 5th star.

                              Book Description

Surviving the death of my son defines my life for the past five years. This is the story of my battle and victory over suicidal feelings and despair. It shows my path of learning to cope with the constant sorrow of my beloved son’s death while at the same time trying to create a new life- one that does not include his physical presence. It is written most particularly for the bereaved parent, who has lost the will to continue on. My wish is that this book will give hope, where there is none.

No Time Out From Grief is an exceptional book and valuable contribution to grief literature. I highly recommend it for the newly bereaved, and especially for newly bereaved parents. Terri and John Huber offer testimony to the healing power of love and hope. One minute at a time, one foot in front of the other, this family learned to survive the tragic death of their son, and readers will gather strength from their story.

I found the book very compeling and my heart went out to the author and her family. The main point I received from the journels were don't forget our family and don't forget my son. I see how very important it is for the families to discuss their loss and remember to them their loved one. Don't be afraid to talk about someones life, they love knowing that you remember.

The book was very emotional but every bit worth reading. It helped me better understand the griefing process and the overwheming pain of loosing a child.
