Book Description
"One last wager and then we'll stop. One hundred thousand dollars says you'll miss the next putt," said the millionaire.
The golfer was about to swing the putter head back when he lost control, his nerve crumbled. Three feet. A simple little three-foot putt and he'd be a hundred thousand dollars richer. His hands trembled and his palms were moist; he felt paralyzed with fear as he remembered other putts like this one that he'd missed. He gazed at the cup, then at the ball, then at the cup again. His vision seemed to blur as the cup seemed farther and farther away, smaller and smaller . . .
The Golfer and the Millionaire is one of those rare books with the power to change lives. It is about one man's struggle to believe in himself, to overcome the inner obstacles that prevent him from fulfilling his dreams. Mentored and inspired by a multi-millionaire, the embittered and cynical golfer learns how to develop self-control and focus, reverse his pattern of failure, and move from self-pity to selfless generosity. Once he puts these lessons into action, his life changes dramatically.
Follow a down-on-his-luck golf pro whose chance encounter with a mysterious multi-millionaire changes his game — and his life — forever. Using golf as a metaphor for life, the millionaire teaches the golfer how to attain success by introducing him to the keys to mastery of such success principles as:
• overcoming self-doubt and fear
• visualizing desired outcomes
• conquering negative thoughts
• breaking patterns of failure
• knocking down mental barriers
• giving unselfishly
Like the golfer, you too will soon discover how the lessons in this book can be put into immediate practice — on the golf course, in business, and in every part of your life. Like the golfer, you too can triumph over self-imposed limitations and start fresh down a road of new opportunities.
As you join the golfer on his journey of self-discovery, you too will learn that ultimate success is possible once the mind is freed of the demons of self-doubt and fear. This exciting, can't-put-it-down narrative will inspire you to explore the limitless possibilities in your own life. Whether you want to improve your performance on the green or in the business world, the invaluable lessons will help you reach your goal.
About the Author
Mark Fisher is the bestselling author of The Instant Millionaire, which has had phenomenal success since its publication in 1989 — selling more than 150,000 copies in the United States alone and translated into 21 languages.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant book.......2002-03-01
an excellent book to learn, not only about golf, but also for life. i can only recommend it.
The only thing you can control in life, is your state of mind.
Its Not Just About Golf, It's About Living.......2000-11-17
The golfer and the millionaire is a great book about the realities of life, you are either living or dying. The main character in this book Robert is dying. He has given away all of his dreams and only has his fading talent and good looks remaining.
He has given away those things that make you successful. He has stopped trying. The book deals with the rebirth of Robert and his attempt to achieve success in not only his golf, but in the other far more important parts of his life.
Robert is fortunate enough to meet someone who awakens him, and helps show him the door to achieve his greatest level in life. Many people, whether golfer or not, can benefit from this book as we all look to be our most successful in life.
The Inner Game of Successful Life and Golf, Too.......2000-07-30
If you are not a golfer, I recommend you skip this book. The parable depends on experiences that golfers have all the time, but that may be hard for nongolfers to appreciate.
If you are a golfer, read on. I rated this book a five star for you.
The basic lesson of this book is that success depends on proper physical and mental preparation. The advice on mental preparation is very helpful for golf, and should work well in general life.
Basically, the story revolves around a physically talented 30 year old golf pro at a country club. He thinks his life is over because he has not made the tour, has just been kicked out by his girl friend for not making a commitment, and sees no future except giving lessons and selling balls.
That night, he drinks a bit too much and totals his car while trying to stop to avoid crashing into a limo. The millionaire saves him from a fiery death and takes him home. The next day, they play golf. The millionaire finds ways to put the pressure on the pro to see why he isn't achieving his dream of being on the tour. Large bets to make 3 foot putts leave the pro unnerved, but $11,000 richer. The millionaire also loans the pro $25,000 and a Ferrari so he can try to qualify for the U.S. Open. You'll have to read the rest of the story for yourself, because to tell you any more would spoil the parable for you.
I can certainly share some of the key lessons. Most of us practice our golf and for our important life activities as though nothing is on the line. So we get better physically, but are mentally unprepared for the challenges of pressure situations. When these arise, our emotions and minds take charge and we perform poorly. You should instead practice like every shot or action is for winning the U.S. Open. Then when you actually play, or do your life activities, pretend like you are practicing (to relieve the pressure).
Whenever you start to have a negative thought (like I'm going to hit a lousy shot, or don't hit into the trees), stop before swinging or acting. Replace that thought with an image of the perfect shot following the perfect swing. The mental process of Jack Nicklaus is described as a model. Basically, you are building self-confidence. Self-talk is also prescribed.
The book also speaks of spiritual laws. One is to learn to love golf (and life) regardless of what happens. One way to do this is to live more fully in the moment. This means ignoring your bad shot that you just hit (other than to learn the lesson from what you did wrong mentally or physically to hit it poorly), or even the great one you hit. The book points out that you can be so pleased with your great drive (your last accomplishment) that you fail to focus on finishing your task -- scoring well on the hole. So you can now see how golf is used to show how self-confidence has to be combined with perserverance to get great results.
Although I have focused on the golf part of the story in this review, there's a lot in the book about love (of self, the opposite sex, for parents, for children, and for all humanity).
Overcome your stalled thinking about how to accomplish what you want out of life (and golf) with this excellent book!
Donald Mitchell
IF YOU WANT TO BE THE PERSON YOU HAVE DREAMED OF BECOMING.......2000-06-29
Ok, let's stop complaning about our failures and start doing something about becoming successful. This book gives us the insight to become what we truly choose to be. Through it's unique story it can show anyone how to shoot for the stars and reach them. As we all know success does not come easily, but it is there for anyone who seeks it. After reading this book, i would ask that the reader rededicate their self to success. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting a new life.
Cute Little Guide........2000-04-01
Mr. Fisher has shown us once again, this time through a game of Golf that we can really accomplish anything in life if we really wanted to. It's all about having the "drive" to succeed. We aim at the hole from afar in the game of golf and take a swing. This is also precisely what we do in real life!
The only minor glitch is that I found it a repeat of his other 3 Millionaire books but through a different storyline. However a well written book.
Thank You, Steve.

Book Description
In The New Irish Table, author Margaret Johnson's love of Ireland permeates page after glorious page of mouthwatering Irish dishes. The 70 recipes reflect the traditions of the national cuisine and also showcase the most exciting new tastes from the home cooks and professional chefs who're part of the culinary renaissance in Ireland today. The time-honored fruits of land and sea, such as fluffy potatoes, plump fish, tender meats, and berries bursting with flavor, are interpreted anew in such dishes as Smoked Salmon Chowder, Filet of Baby Beef with Spinach-Bacon Stuffing and Guinness Mustard Sauce, and Raspberry Buttermilk Tarts. Lavish color photographs of the food, the landscapes, and the people are woven through the text, making The New Irish Table the next best thing to sitting down at a table in Ireland itself.

Very nice, inexpensive Irish Family restaurnat recipes........2006-02-14
`The New Irish Table' and `Irish Puddings, Tarts, Crumbles, and Fools' by Irish-American culinary journalist, Margaret M. Johnson who seems to provide low end books covering Irish culinary practice, beginning with her `The Irish Heritage Cookbook', also from Chronicle Books. The middle ground, being the `Julia Child' for Irish cooking is Darina Allen, along with husband, Tim Allen and mother in law, Myrtle Allen, all of the Cork culinary powerhouse, Ballymaloe House and Cooking School. The high end of modern Irish cooking is held by Irish-American culinary academician and chef, Noel C. Cullen. The ethnographic corner of Irish / Celtic foodways is filled out by `Celtic Folklore Cooking' by culinary writer and folklorist, JoAnne Asala of Chicago. There are many more Irish cookbooks to cover between now and St. Patrick's Day, but this pretty much covers most major points on the culinary compass for Irish cooking.
`The New Irish Table' and Cullen's `Elegant Irish Cooking' complement one another pretty well, as they both present recipes from modern Irish hospitality centers. The difference is that where Johnson is covering pubs and `bed and breakfast' style eateries, Cullen is covering dishes from Michelin one and two star restaurants in Ireland, as well as many of his own creations as a working chef, before he took up teaching at Boston University.
Between these two featured books, Johnson's Desserts book is a much more valuable addition to your cookbook collection, as it includes a lot of fancy and holiday desserts which I have not seen in any other good book on Irish cooking. The best thing about this book and its companion is that like a lot of Chronicle Books, it seems to be on a fast track to the Bargain Book table, both real and on-line. That means that at half price, this book is a real bargain for the cookbook collector with a genuine interest in dessert baking.
On the surface, this book seems to feature four basically different kinds of baking. The six chapters are:
1. Puddings
2. Tarts
3. Crumbles and Crisps
4. Fools and Flummeries
5. Tea Breads and Cakes
6. Christmas Treats
Anyone familiar with English cooking will recognize in the first chapter a wide range of desserts which the Anglo-Irish all lump together under the name of `pudding'. Actually, most puddings remind me a lot of French Toast, more properly called `pain perdu' by the French. They are all different ways of combining day old bread, custard, dried fruits and the like into a treat for the sweet tooth. Puddings and tarts, together, form a collection of dishes very familiar to those who know English sweets.
Crumbles and Crisps and Fools and Flummeries all seem remarkably like a style of dessert which is very popular in the United States and commonly associated with both the Pennsylvania Dutch and southeastern and south central styles of cooking. In Ireland, as in the United States, they are all primarily ways of combining stewed or jellied fruit with oats, milk and perhaps some custard. The thing that distinguishes `fools' from other similar desserts is the fact that they are made with gooseberries. A gooseberry, according to my `Berry Bible' illustration, looks a lot like a current, and just a bit like a blueberry, and seem to be common in the United States only in the northern west coast.
The breads and cakes chapter visits the most widely familiar realm of Irish baking, the world of soda breads and scones. This realm is covered much better in Tim Allen's `The Ballymaloe Bread Book', but the last chapter in this book makes the whole book worth the budget price of admission.
This last chapter is a bonanza for those looking for something interesting to bake for Christmas, especially if you are fond of confections which include a bit of stout or Irish whiskey in the ingredients. This chapter brings the tired old fruitcake into a whole New World of cakes, puddings, ice creams, breads, mince pies, and cider sauces.
The second book, `The New Irish Table' has but 70 recipes, all of which seem to be high end bar food, especially since about 75% of the pages are dedicated to appetizers and side dishes. The five chapters on recipes are:
Small Bites with 9 recipes for crackers, tartlets, pates, crostini, cheese bites, and chutneys.
Starters with 15 recipes for soups, salads, souffles, charlottes, sauces, and sabayon.
Main Courses with 16 recipes for fish, duck, chicken, lots of pork, lamb, venison, rabbit, and pheasant.
Side Dishes with 13 recipes of old standards such as colcannon, champ, boxty, cabbage, turnips, and leeks.
Sweets with 17 recipes for puddings, custards, brulees, cakes, tarts, cobblers, and crumbles.
All in all, if you already have one or two books on Irish savoury dishes and you get Johnson's dessert book, this volume becomes largely redundant. A lot of the sidebars between the two books are the same and the `Irish Table' simply confirms everything I already know about the heavy Irish use of apples, pears, berries, dairy, beer, whiskey, pork, and lamb.
Since you can get this cheap, I will recommend it as a small, inexpensive addition to your Irish cookbook collection. It may, however, be the first in line for regifting if you already own a few Irish cookbooks.
Wonderful!.......2003-03-20
Margaret Johnson has struck gold again. This book is a wonderful journey through the world of New Irish cooking. The pictures are breathtaking. These are recepies you will want to try out in your own home! Thanks again Mrs. Johnson for keeping us close to Ireland.
Welcome to the Irish family!.......2003-03-05
Margaret Johnson's latest book is a visual and culinary delight! Through her wonderfully ethnic recipes, Margaret invites all readers into her Irish family. My family usually has an italian course during its holiday celebrations, but Margaret's fare has inspired me so much that I am going to recommend that the red-sauced staples are replaced by the the delacacies outlined in this wonderful work (I just hope my mother-in-law agrees). Margaret--thank you for opening my eyes to this cuisine...you are an emerald jewel of Ireland!
A must buy!!.......2003-03-04
I have been a fan of Margaret Johnson for many years now and her latest publication is her best yet! The beautiful pictorial presentation of this book is bested only by Margaret's poetic descriptions of Irish fare. The irish tastes described by Margaret will transform the reader (and chef) to the emerald isle. It is a journey that anyone with an ounce of irish blood cannot miss! The "irishcook" has done it again!! This book is a must have!!

A GEM FULL OF DELIGHTFUL AND USEFUL HINTS FOR THE TRAVELER.......1999-06-05
Ms. Hyman has provided the traveller a beautiful book full of wonderful restaurants and descriptions useful while visiting in Britain and Ireland. My wife and I had Ms. Hyman's book at our side while travelling to Ireland last year and to Britain this year. Not only does she provide local recipes and the names of delightful restaurants but she includes comments about the local area which these travelers found extremely useful. We stayed a week in the Cottswalds this year and our travels and dining were based on the recommendations of Ms. Hyman. We then spent a week in London and followed suit there. She led us to wonderful experiences we would not otherwise have found!

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection of Recipes from an Irish Chef........2006-02-26
`New Irish Cookery' by Irish / Canadian chef / restauranteur / culinary TV hosts Paul and Jeanne Rankin is similar to a lot of Irish, Japanese, Thai, Italian, and you name it books claiming to give new recipes based on a strong existing tradition. Among Irish cuisine books of this type, it is most similar to `Elegant Irish Cooking' by culinary scholar, teacher and professional chef, Noel C. Cullen Ed.D, CMC, AAC in that most of the `new' recipes were developed by the authors at their Irish restaurants.
While this book is substantially less expensive than Cullen's book, it is also a substantially lower value, as Cullen's book (see my review of same) begins with a great survey of Irish culinary history and includes recipes from both the author's chef experience plus recipes from other important Irish chefs. So, while Cullen covers the historical perspective much better, he also covers the modern Irish culinary scene much better than the Rankins.
This book commits the fallacy of touting the value of the recipes by touting the freshness of their ingredients. To an American reader, this is worthless, as we simply do not have access to the same Irish ingredients, at least not as fresh as what is available to the authors. While I have detected an emerging availability of new Irish ingredients in American megamarts, we certainly do not get fresh Irish seafood, lamb, poultry, game, cream, or mushrooms, as we generally have plenty of these of our own. The authors compound their error by identifying the freshness of the ingredients as the thing that makes these recipes Irish!
Just like great hospitality and enjoyment of the table, every major cuisine around the world brags about the freshness of their ingredients. And, most writers make it sound like they were the ones who invented the use of fresh ingredients. I am generally willing to take this flummery with a grain of salt if the book has a lot more to offer. And, this IS a good book of recipes. It's just that it is more accurately labeled as new recipes by two Irish cooks. As the cooks are from a very good restaurant, this makes it just a bit better than `The New Irish Table' by Irish-American culinary journalist, Margaret M. Johnson, but not nearly as good as Cullen's book.
I would also warn inexperienced cooks about the somewhat brief descriptions of recipe procedures in many of these recipes. I found, for example, the instructions for making mayonnaise to be just a bit too brief for an amateur and the rather unusual description of an `in paper' technique to be just a bit odd, as it made it sound as if one was frying tin foil!
Since the author's premise is that these are Irish recipes because they use fresh Irish ingredients, you will find a lot of recipes whose technique looks remarkably French, Spanish, Italian, or even Peruvian (see ceviche).
If you simply must have every available Irish cookbook or you happen to live in Ireland, where all these ingredients are readily available, you will not be disappointed with this book. I am especially happy with the authors' giving both English and metric measurements, as the more books with both brings us closer to being comfortable with metric measurements. But, if you want real `new' Irish cooking, get Cullen's book. If you want traditional Irish cooking, get `Irish Traditional Cooking' by leading Irish cooking school owner, Darina Allen. If you want a healthy dose of Irish cooking and accompanying folklore, get `Celtic Folklore Cooking' by culinary writer and folklorist, JoAnne Asala.
All in all, this is an `average' cookbook that puts too much weight on how great the recipes are because they use ingredients that in general, are not available to us.

fantastic.......2006-10-18
I am lucky enough to have Mr. Crerend as one of my closest friends both inside and outside of the workplace. His book is a good one, especially for the new investor who is looking for advice and guidance from someone with years of experience in the field. Mr. Crerend has a unique point of view that makes his book a great one, and also made him successful.
Good primer and useful reference.......2003-02-15
Even though this book is 3 years old, it still serves as a very good primer to the hedge fund industry. Anyone wishing to gain a fundamental understanding of how hedge funds work and how they can be used will find the book easy to read. A lot of details are covered; e.g., a discussion about hedge fund indexes. Even for a professional like myself, I find the book to be a good reference every time I forget a concept or two.
Extremely General.......2002-01-01
Little information other than extremely general data on historic returns. One of the few investment books I have ever read that I did not find something useful to remember.
Tevfik Aksoy.......1999-11-22
Not bad for a someone on the street, however, it has very limited use for a professional. Contains a lot of repeats (and I mean a lot of). Would not recommend if a professional insight to hedge funds is being searched for. The book would be useful for those who are completely hedge fund illiterate or just curious what a hedge fund is.
Facts, but somewhat outdated.......1999-07-16
Contains same facts as other hedge fund books, but seems to be outdated. Little info on recent trends in industry.
