5 out of 5 stars This book IS FABULOUS!.......2004-03-11

Despite what the California reader said, I think this book is marvelous. It is VERY creative and thoughtful in its settings. It is packed with useful information. And, the photography is truly wonderful! I cannot imagine what that other reader was thinking.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing. Save your money........2004-02-11

I found the suggestions to be very ordinary, unoriginal and repetitive. You've seen these dozens of times. Some were downright silly - tying aprons to the backs of chairs. The photography left a lot to be desired too with unimaginative arrangements and amature photography. If I had had the opportunity to leaf through it first, I would not have bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful visually and packed with ideas and information!.......2003-05-21

I found this book to be filled with wonderful ideas for table settings not just for yourself but also for entertaining. The themed settings are very creative. Very good information on proper table setting and linens. The photography is sumptuous!

3 out of 5 stars Good book for the novice.......2004-05-03

This book gives a great overview of the agricultural commodities markets of the world. It covers how the futures markets work, why they came into existence, and how they can be used to manage risk. The first six chapters are the most useful for the majority of readers; they focus mostly on the corn, soybeans, and wheat futures exchanges in the midwest United States. Several later chapters cover European exchanges and minor world exchanges. Don't expect to become a trader after reading this book, but it's a great place to get started learning about agricultural futures and options.

      Book Description

This book takes a very simple approach on investing and helps explain it in a story about two children. It is intended for children and teenagers aged 10 to 15, but also is a book that adults can use to easily understand concepts about investing. The basic premise of the book is that a child investing only $10 a month in mutual funds and adding more per month starting as a teenager can create wealth of about a million dollars over their lifetime, due to the length of time the money is invested. The book is intended as an educational source for both children and adults. Children and adults can learn that if they start investing early and regularly they can create significant wealth over their lifetimes. If children learn this lesson early they will develop good money habits and be investors throughout their lifetime. This book would be a great gift to a child to help them start to learn how to invest, which will be something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives and hopefully help them be financially independent.

The boy in the story is a child with an attitude. He loves ice cream, watching Star Trek and basketball, and watching his money grow. The story talks about why and how to invest in mutual funds, but also leaves the message that there are many more important things in life besides money.

                Product Description

As reviewed by Kirkus Discoveries: "Step-by-step instructions on how to build a home in an economical and artistically unique way. Owning a home doesn't have to be a trying ordeal, says Madison, who reports that he built his own house with little more than his own muscle power and ingenuity. Though he claims not to be particularly handy, he managed to create a fully functional cabin complete with electricity, running water and Internet access as part of a journey that was both fulfilling and therapeutic. He takes readers through the process, from cutting down trees and laying the foundation for the floor to installing piping and electricity to detailing plans to build additional modules. Pictures and diagrams complement the text, and the author even discusses his future plans to fully automate the cabin. In addition to the down-and-dirty details, he uses quotes from a number of philosophers-Aristotle, Locke, Rousseau and others-to help explain his motivation. It was as much about testing his own abilities as it was about creating a physical shelter. One one level, this is a practical guide that contains pertinent information for people who actually want to build their own cabin. On another, it's a fascinating look inside the mind of a man who chose to go against the grain and who writes with such folksy charm and comical practicality that you can't help but applaud him for bucking the system. Those not interested in building their own homes will be bored senseless by the technical details and some of the long-winded endnotes, but entertaining anecdotes-such as how the author munches on blackberries while simultaneously trimming his beard in his yard to lay down a barrier of human scent that deters snakes-keep the pages turning. In definite need of editorial direction but makes a case for the author-whatever his name is-getting his own home-improvement show." As reviewed by New York Times best selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh: "When Henry David Thoreau tired of the city in 1845, he retreated to the country, living on the shores of Walden Pond and chronicling his experiences in the timeless work Walden or Life in the Woods. Now, in an enchanting new book, A Small Cabin that One Person can Build, readers are presented with a sort of modern-day version of Thoreau's classic. Like Thoreau, author Aristotle Locke Rousseau Hume Madison (a.k.a. Al Madison) decided to retreat from his hectic life, and although he didn't have a place to live, he had some time and money and, more importantly, some land and trees. In this amazing little book, Madison (each of the illustrations names he uses provides a famous quote at the end of it) sets out to build a log cabin-and educate readers on how to do it themselves. In a friendly, approachable style, Madison shows readers exactly how he built his cabin using easy to follow step-by-step instructions, from insulation to wiring to putting on a porch. He lists exactly what tools you need and where to get them. Lest the thought of roughing it doesn't appeal to you, be assured that this cabin is no rustic refuge. Madison added all the modern comforts, including Internet service and a flush toilet. 'There are two characteristics to my building,' he writes 'It was built efficiently and it is a deliberate work of art.' Filled with wonderful photographs and a fine, wry wit, Madison's book is not just a how-to, it's a why-to. Because Madison didn't just build a cabin; he rebuilt himself. As he takes the time to point out, his labors made him healthier, stronger, and emotionally tougher, too. Readers can live vicariously through Madison in this wise and funny book, but truthfully, after reading it you'll want to build a cabin of your own. Luckily Madison is here to show you how."

                Introduction from the Author

Three schools in three years—I’ve got quite the track record. I started on the West Coast my freshman year, the logical choice for a native Westerner, and here I am in Virginia two years later. West Coasters would say, “James Madison, that sounds like a nice school,” and although they’re right, most don’t know any details. Still, they have heard of the name. That counts for something, right? East Coasters know exactly what that “something” is. They know about the national awards JMU has acquired, the breathtaking landscape of the campus, and the admirable surroundings to match. Easterners have heard all about JMU’s reputation for academic greatness, and some have witnessed the University’s growth from a small, all-women’s college, to a blossoming university. JMU’s increasingly difficult admissions process is testimony to one thing: a great many people want to be here. You bought the book, so you’re at least considering it, right?

At JMU, the grub is decent, the surroundings are breathtaking, the parties are kickin’, the teachers are knowledgeable, and the gym is spectacular. However, what it really comes down to is the people. Madison isn’t a school that exists solely to crank out tomorrow’s elite, like the next Bill Gates or the future president of the United States; however, each year JMU grads step out into the real world, and they are successful. Whatever they put in the shepherd’s pie and grilled cheese at D-Hall, it’s working. It’s hard to convey with numbers and words on a page what makes up a university. Maybe this guidebook’s stats will at least begin to pencil in the basics.

Deciding where to go to college is like learning to drive. Learning might involve some arguing with your parents, and steering down windy roads is a given, but once the process is all over, you feel darn good navigating your own course. I’m not here to make that decision for you, or to tell you that JMU will be the catalyst to your success; however, I hope this guidebook will live up to its title, and will at least point you in the right direction. If that direction changes several times, hang in there. If life really is a highway, the trick is finding the right exit to get off. Maybe you will wind up on I-81, taking exit 245 to James Madison University.

This book is awesome, and by awesome, I mean totally sweet. Hands-down, this is the best of the College Prowler series. The information is all right on. Sometimes I can't believe how great this book is, but I feel it in my heart.

5 out of 5 stars A truthful look at JMU.......2004-12-23

College Prowler's Off the Record guide to James Madison University portrays a sort of "behind the scenes" look. It's the closest thing you'll get to going there without... well, going there. If you're looking for a guide that tells you what's really cool and what's not from a student's prospective, this is the guide you'll want. From the party scene to the on and off campus living, this guide will give you a little taste of just about anything -- and then you can decide whether or not you want a real taste (aka going there). For prospective or just curious parents and students, this guide should be a tremendous help. I am a senior at James Madison and I learned a ton of new information as I was writing this book. This book is as complete a guide as I could create (and was also quite the research project!). A guide like this would have been priceless when I was deciding where to go. I enjoyed writing this guide and would recommend it to anyone interested in JMU!

                  Book Description

Eli Lilly's long life entended over a wide range of endeavors in which he made major contributions. Under his active leadership, the pharmaceutical company he joined in 1907 evolved into one of America's most successful big businesses.

Although a hard-working businessman, Lilly eventually acquired diverse interests outside the pharmaceutical company. He nurtured a passion for prehistoric archaeology that led to significant scholarly publications and to financial and personal patronage that helped bring archaeology to professional maturity. Lilly researched and wrote history, preserved houses, and actively encouraged and sponsored the work of others.

During the last three decades of his life Lilly gave away millions of dollars personally and through the Lilly Endowment. Even more impressive than the large size of his philanthropy, however, was his personal involvement.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiration for All of Us.......2001-08-06

An inspirational and informative account of one woman's story of living with a disbility and the obstacles she and others have encountered trying to overcome the "Stereotype" of being labled as disabled. Her stories are funny yet thought provoking and inspirational. It makes us take a look at ourselves and how society views people who are disabled.. The Author also sends us all the message that at any given time , we could become either visually impaired or disabled while encouraging us to take nothing in this life forgranted, encouraging us to count our blessings, and to live life to the fullest.
