Actually, Not Only in Business...........2001-01-05

This is a terrific book, one which I wish I had been able to read when I began my business career. Rosen focuses on various "MindBlocks" and "RoadBlocks" (to both business success and personal fulfillment) which so many women (and men) encounter. They're all there in twelve chapters which Rosen calls "Sessions."

Her strategic approach to each "Session" is brilliant: "Let's talk about"....and then she does. Problems with money, with self-expectations, with relationships, with sexuality, with "faking it", with negative attitudes, with bad habits, with self-esteem, with wishful thinking (eg denial), with stress, and with success (ie fear thereof). Has she missed any of your own concerns? Rosen also includes immensely valuable "Resources for Business Owners" which can also be of great value to non-business owners. With regard to the book's title, none of the information I have about Rosen indicates that she has received any formal training as a therapist...nor does she at any time suggest or even imply it. For those in need of therapy, she strongly encourages them to obtain it from a highly qualified and carefully selected professional.

For many years, Rosen has been actively involved in all manner of organizations, programs, and activities to support women's efforts to succeed in business. What she learned as a result of that involvement is generously and eloquently shared in this book.

For anyone interested in baking terrific pies and tarts, this is the book to own. Such a fuss is made over pie and tart disasters, over the uncanny inability of some to make a perfect pie crust dough and whatnot, and really, to no end. So what? Go work on your perfect golf swing. The thrill is in the trying, again and again, and Walter makes you want to try.

Two minor caveats: The layout for the front end of the book, which includes the vital section called "The Primer," is unfortunate. It's all but impossible to look at for any length of time, let alone to read and study. Page after page of four columns of black type per page is tiresome on the eyes. If Carole Walter baked pies that looked like this layout, she'd be thrown out of the state fair.

The other minor note is the extensive use of the food processor. Either have one first, or buy one with this book.

Beyond that, the challenge is clear. If Fruity Viennese Linzer Tart sounds good to you, this is the place to learn absolutely everything you need to know to make it. Or how about the classic Key Lime Pie? Or a White Chocolate Caffe Tart?

If you get into this book and embrace the idea that practice makes perfect, or thereabouts, you are in for some exciting baking. The pastry doughs and crunchy shells are worth the price of admission, because once mastered, your only limitations for mixing up shells and ingredients are your own imagination.

Carole Walter may have written the greatest liberation text of the year. You shall overcome any residual fear you might have of trying your hand at pie and tart baking if you follow this book from page one to the sweet, sweet end. -- Schuyler Ingle

I have this book and have bought it for my daughters... this is the best pie tart book I have ever used. Cooks who love pies/tarts will appreciate this book and Ms. Walters newer version, I also have. This is a great gift for a bride or new cook. First place I go for a special dessert. I use to think I made the world's best pumpkin pie, until I tried the one in this book, with the pecan crust. It is out of this world, rich, elegant and simple.

Brilliant pie cookbook.......2006-05-23

I *could not* make a pie or tart before this book. The layout is brilliant, helping you get a firm grasp on the basics then allowing you to branch from there. The recipes work and people now ooh and ahh at my pies and tarts. Seriously. She really makes it easy and lets you in on the little tips and tricks that bring you from average to outstanding pastry. Also, there are always excellent alternatives to using a food processor. I never use one and I very much disagree with that portion of the amazon review. This is probably the most useful cookbook I own, and I've probably got at least 100 of them.

"Great Pies & Tarts" proves its worth, as your taste will attest, when you sample the results from the instructions and recipies presented. Please note, Arthur Schwartz, a wonderful culinary professional, is not a co-author as advertised. Examining the book will confirm this.

Good recipes, poor organization.......2001-02-18

Although there are some good recipes in this book (blueberry tart with walnut topping is one) I spent a lot of time flipping pages, trying to find information. I feel like the book could have been organized more effectively, which is unfortunate considering how much useful information it contains. Overall a good addition to the recipe library, but I often find myself using other references to supplement this book. Also, in a few cases I question the techniques or ingredients, for instance the use of baking powder in the food processor version of the "flaky pie crust."

Instructions and pictures GREAT! Taste - not mine.......2000-08-01

The pictures are great. The instructions are clear and well-written. I desperately wanted this book to work. I tried two pies, cranberry-apple and peach-blueberry, using Flaky Pie Crust II for a food processor. I tasted the filling prior to putting it into the crust. It tasted good both times. We tossed out the pie each time after having a slice. The bitter aftertaste just lingered, even 4 hours later.

The filling descriptions sound so good that I'm willing to give it one more try . . .

Poor for a tax guide.......2003-06-18

I bought this book with the expectation that it would be able to answer or point me in the correct direction to answer questions related to corporate and individual taxation issues. There are very few books available in English which cover specifics of Japanese taxation. However, this book is more of an over view of the country, people, govenment, and taxation system. The market for this book is for those interested in starting or bringing a business to Japan, but all the information contained in this book is basically available for free from various internet sites (Japan Ministry of Finance, JETRO, etc).

In addition to my initial disappointment with the content, there are also numerous errors. On some pages the tables were not formatted properly so text and information are cut off. On other pages, it looks as though web links to pictures or charts were inserted, but all that appears is the little box with the X indicating that the picture couldn't be loaded.

As an ardent admirer of Mrs. Kennedy for the past 40 years, I have read every book on her that I could get my hands on. "Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad" is a refreshing change from the repetitive narratives and recycled photos that are the mainstay of so many other books about her life. Ms. Duheme's illustrations are elegant and sumptuous but also embrace a childlike purity and simplicity which capture the essence of Mrs. Kennedy's persona and mystique. The commentary has the simple charm of a beautifully written children's book. It is obvious why Mrs. Kennedy chose Ms. Duheme to accompany her on her more memorable trips abroad as First Lady. A truly enchanting book.

For Fashionistas Who Like to Travel.......2001-11-16

Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad is an adorable little book filled with colorful Fauvist-like illustrations. Anyone who likes Laura Stoddart's simple-chic illustrations for Kate Spade will probably enjoy this book. Fans of the recent exhibition at the Met that highlighted Jackie's White House clothes may appreciate it too. The commentary is kept to a minimum and black and white photos from Mrs. Kennedy's travels are included, but the focus is on French artist Duheme's amusing miniature paintings that capture Jackie in all those great pink sleeveless dresses and crisp suits in Paris, India, London and Italy.

As a side note: Duheme and Jacqueline Kennedy became friends who shared similar painting styles, and Duheme was invited to Cape Cod to give the First Lady an art lesson.

A delightful book for Jackie fans.......2000-04-04

"Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad" is a beautiful book. The illustrations are lovely to look at, and the book is fun to read. A good choice for anyone to add to their library; especially recommended for those interested in the Kennedys and Jackie in particular. Evokes the fun mood of Jackie's scrapbook written with her sister Lee, "One Special Summer".

An adult picture book.......2000-03-14

This book has wonderful pictures that captures the "facts" from actual photographs and transforms them into scenes of "fantasy". I really enjoyed the background information that accompanies each picture. A real treat of Jackie fans.

I found this book to be extremely well-done and to the point. Unfortunately there is nothing that can ease the pain of the death of one's child. What this book did for me, though, was validate the many emotions and physical effects that have accompanied this life-shattering and heart-breaking tragedy. I found this book so helpful that I ordered four additional copies for family and friends. I plan to reread it from time to time as the years drag by.

Candid and compelling
I am also a bereaved mother. These nine women have bared their most innermost feelings in this honest and powerful book. It is the best book I have read, (and reread), on this subject. I highly recommend it to not only to all bereaved parents, but family, friends and professionals who care enough to acquire some insight into what life is really like after losing a child. They have bravely shared their hearts and bared their souls in order to give others hope.

On the mark.......2007-01-02

I lost my teenage daughter and have read numerous books looking for answers; this one was right on the mark. The book traces the experiences of nine women and their husbands following the loss of their children and provides a road map for other bereaved parents struggling to find their way back to a sense of near-normality. It was refreshing to find that I was not alone in my seemingly odd thoughts and that others have endured and accepted the unacceptable.

A Bit Depressing.......2006-12-15

I lost my 28 year old daughter in a car crash May 2005 and have read numerous books on grief since then. Among those I found most helpful were "The Worst Loss", "A Grief Disguised", "When the Bough Breaks", and "Holding on to Hope". Some of the moms who wrote this book were Christian, some were Jewish, but none seemed to hold to Biblical teachings during their time of loss. Psychics!? How does that square with the teachings of either religion? In some ways I found it difficult to identify with these authors. I did find some insights in some of their comments but overall cannot recommend this book

This book connects across the gulf of emptiness and loss that bereaved parents are intimately familiar with. It seems to speak the language, and address the pains that those who have not grieved a lost child can only fathom.
It is also offers hope for those who are new to this grief and describes the different way of living that now becomes life.
I recommend this book for anyone who has lost a child, or knows somwone who has. As a therapist who works with grieving parents, I can attest to the help Beyond Tears continues to bring with each additional reading.

If you are inwardly drawn to this book, I suggest you get a copy. Read it as an exploration into your Self. While you are reading it, be sensitive to your surroundings. See what happens within yourself as you absorb David's words. It was after I met David, sitting in several of his spiritual gatherings, that I discovered his book. I had experienced his spiritual transmission at several public programs. At that time, I had been searching for Something. I was aware of spiritual organizations and teachers, but I was turned off by their doctrines. "Joining" anything was repugnent to me. To me, restrictions were totally unbearable. As I was reading David's book, I had a very amazing experience. I read what I, in my being, already knew to be True, the Something I had been searching for was awakened. I also read with interest about David's life.The reading opened up issues that I needed to explore in more depth, in the depth of my Being, by meditating alone and being more in David's presence. Sometimes fear would overcome me (as I read), for what David was sharing (in his book) took me to places that were hidden for a long time. As my spiritual awareness has grown (over the years), so has my ability to understand David's words. From sitting in his company and reading his book an incredible spiritual realtiy has dawned. For some, this book will be an account of one man's spiritual journey. For others, it will convey the Truth they've been searching endlesslly for. Either way, everyone who reads it will receive a special Gift, one meant to be enjoyed at the deepest level of Being.

I'm extremely grateful to have found this book. I've read many excellent books on spirituality and the spirit, but for me, this one is as much a meditation as a read. While sharing his personal journey, David Spero illuminates the reader's path, taking you within yourself to your own divine center. It's really quite an exceptional work. I recommend it most highly and look forward to more.

No better book on Enlightenment!.......2004-10-19

This book was wonderful! Filled with insight, wisdom and the fullness of David Spero's spiritual transmission, I have yet to find a better book on the topic of Enlightenment. Written in an easy-to-follow question/answer format, this book puts the reader directly into the topic being discussed and answers the core questions we all have as spiritual seekers. Whether you are just starting out on your spiritual path or are a seasoned veteran, you will want to make Spero's book part of your journey. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BUYING THIS BOOK!

Incredibly Helpful Book.......2007-02-15

Over and over, while reading this book, I had the uncanny feeling I was reading my own story. The unhealthy thought processes, self-destructive and self-debasing tendencies, the hopelessness and despair the author describes, were completely familiar. For that reason I found this book incredibly validating. Lynn's book assured me, more than any I've ever read, I am not alone. Her use of actual therapy sessions was creative and beneficial. She kept my attention from the very beginning. Beyond the Tears will have the reader in tears at times, and some of the experiences are difficult to read because they are so real and heartbreaking. But reading this book is an adventure that is well worth the time. For all who have suffered any kind of abuse or have come from dysfunctional families, this book will be a tremendous help. Beyond the Tears offers hope to all who are seeking healing. Those who suffer from trauma-related struggles will find compassion and courage. As Lynn's title suggests, she truly is a survivor and her story assures us that we can be as well.

Moving and Inspiring.......2006-11-05

Beyond the Tears is amazing. It's a story of incredible courage, strength, and will to not only survive but to thrive and help others. I'm inspired by Lynn's desire to help other women by publishing her own story of trial and suffering. Any woman who has ever suffered childhood abuse or domestic violence will relate to this touching narrative of Lynn's life. Lynn's story gives hope to all women who have ever suffered any form of abuse.

Required reading .......2005-11-18

I had a happy childhood. My parents loved me and were wonderful; to this day my mother is one of my best friends and my greatest supporters. Having such a stable family background made it difficult for me to read Beyond the Tears. Lynn Tolson suffered immeasurably. She was abandoned by all of the basic social institutions: the family, the medical system (her stories about psychiatric care are appalling and I'm sure that many people can relate to them) and social service.

Sadly, Lynn did not feel safe enough to confide in her teachers to tell them that she was being sexually abused. There's so much shame and secrecy that is attached to molestation and it takes an incalculable toll on one's psychological and physical health.

With stark candor, Lynn leads us through her devastating experience growing up. But this is not a story simply of pain and victimization. It is a story of triumph over adversity. Not only did Lynn work out her emotional scars with the help of several decent, humane therapists, but she decided to devote her time to giving back to other survivors of sexual abuse. Now Lynn is a social worker helping other people. Who could be more qualified or helpful than someone who has already been there?

Beyond the Tears is required reading for anyone who is interested in the horrifying problem of sexual abuse of children.

During my research on domestic violence to feature in Sisters in the Lord Magazine for October, which happens to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I ran across Lynn Tolson's, Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story.

By the second paragraph of Beyond the Tears, I was transported into the mind of a young woman bent on suicide and traveled with her through her suicide attempt, discovery, revival in a cold hospital room and transfer to a psyche ward. This was just in the first chapter.

The remainder of my night was shot as I stayed awake, reading each page as quickly as possible so that I might know this woman was okay. That she recovered. That she escaped her abuser and survived.

Intense doesn't begin to describe Beyond the Tears. This writer's true story reads like a best-selling thriller - but it's not fiction. It's Tolson's nightmare that begins the story and her victorious survival that ends it.

Peopled with characters we all know in our own lives, Tolson brings her own cast alive with crisp dialogue and action - oftentimes breathtaking with brutal honesty. Tolson's abuse cycle started as a child and continued through her marriage. The pages turn on their own as this compelling true story shows the cycle of abuse, the mindset of the victim, the actions of the abuser, the betrayal of relatives and friends and finally, the first steps toward healing.

As I suspected when reading Tolson's story, her true calling was to be a writer, which she revealed in a subsequent interview. She is now working on her second survival story - this time she has survived breast cancer.

Beyond the Tears is critical reading for victims of abuse. Through Tolson's story, many will recognize themselves, their families, their spouses, their friends, and from there, recognize that they, too, can heal-even when death seems like the best solution.

Tolson says it best in this quote from her website, "In the meantime, know that my purpose as Lynn C. Tolson is in my initials: LCT, Learning, Creating, Teaching, to provide empowerment of our minds, bodies, and spirits. May this generation break the silence that surrounds sexual assault and incest so that future generations may live in peace."

Beyond the Tears was very captivating. I felt for and understood Lynn as she told her story. I never felt that it was biased in any way, and longed to find out what was coming next. As a man reading a story about a woman and her experiences with sexual, emotional and physical abuse, I was touched by her courage to continue, even when she did not want to continue she persevered, found strength and did more than survive, she thrived. I was able to identify with the main character just as easily as if that person had been male. As a therapist I have encouraged several of my clients to read this book to assist them in working through their abuse issues(both male and female clients). If I could sum up the most impressive thing about this book besides the author, it would be how she tells her story as though she is telling it to her therapist. That is very healthy and encouraging to others who may need counseling. Thank you so much Lynn for sharing your story and breaking the silence.
