Book Description
A visit to Baker and Spice, the internationally acclaimed bakery in London's Knightsbridge area, is a must for anyone who loves good food. Everything is hand-made by bakers working on the premises, using the finest ingredients and traditional methods. Full-flavored rustic breads are baked in the original steam-generating ovens. Delectable pastries are made in the modern ovens in the back. There are butter-rich brioches and croissants, cookies of all kinds, muffins, cheesecake brownies, fabulous huge meringues that melt in the mouth, chocolate mousse cake, and so much more. Baker and Spice Baking with Passion includes recipes for all of these fabulous breads, pastries, and cakes. Replicate the steam-injection used in the bakery. Discover that working with wetter doughs and using gentle kneading produces better bread. Learn the secrets of traditional "old school" French baking. Appreciate the importance of using the very best ingredients to make cakes that need no "dressing up". All of the recipes have been tested in a domestic kitchen using non-professional ovens and equipment. Complicated procedures are clearly and thoroughly presented, many with step-by-step photographs. Beautiful color photographs of the finished result whet the appetite and inspire the reader to get baking.
Customer Reviews:
Great--if you are a really accomplished baker.......2006-11-23
I am a somewhat intermediate baker and have had a LOT of difficulty with these recipes. The chocolate genoise, for example, despite two attempts failed. I consulted another source as to the method some important steps were left out. I have found that unless you can "read between the lines" and automatically know how to do the more difficult things, then you are going to have little success with this book. It is, however, beautifu and inspiring and I've enjoyed reading it and getting ideas--the chocolate topping for the genoise is DIVINE, as is the caramel/chocolate tart/shortbread.
review of baking with passion.......2005-07-19
Fantastic book. Worth the price just for the sourdough recipes which really work. (San Francisco sourdough makes incredible bruschetta).
10 Stars if I Could!.......2003-02-21
Buy this book now! Even if you never make any of the recipes, the pictures and layout are worth the price.
If you're a novice baker, this isn't the book for you. Some of the recipes are a bit involved. You must, must make the Kranz Cake, even if it does demand an overnight rest of the dough...
Bear in mind this is a British book, so you'll need a set of scales as well as a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion to make anything from the book (unless this edition is already converted - I got my copy in the UK).

Book Description
In 1974, John P. "Jack" Murtha became the ?rst Vietnam combat veteran elected to Congress. In the nearly three decades since then, Congressman Murtha has been intimately involved with governmental decisions about America's national security and foreign policy, adding his unique perspective to international affairs while faithfully representing Pennsylvania's twelfth district. From Vietnam to 9/11 combines personal memoir with thoughtful analysis to provide a behind-the-scenes account of the formation and conduct of U.S. foreign policy in the last quarter-century. At the same time, it tells the story of a man committed to service and community. This edition, updated for 2006, contains the Congressman's November 17, 2005, press release concerning the redeployment of U.S. troops, his letter to his congressional colleagues about why he changed his mind on the war, and his letter of February 2, 2006, to President Bush about changing course in the Iraq War.
Customer Reviews:
Legend in His Own Mind.......2006-01-12
I served with many Vietnam veterans who were superb Marines, and many who were incompetent, self-promoting blowhards. Murtha enlisted during the Korean War, but remained in the United States. He went into business after leaving active duty, but continued to serve as a reserve officer. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam, pushing for service with a combat unit. While this may seem heroic, it is also an example of self-aggrandizement: I need medals so I can get promoted and run for Congress. Sound familiar?
While much of the detail is skimpy, Murtha and coauthor John Plashal (whose other work includes the insightful foreign policy treatise "Buying and Selling a Home in Northern Virginia") do cover the conflict in the Balkans more fully. I recall attending a briefing in 1996 and asking the speaker why we were getting involved in an area where we had no obvious national interest at stake. His response? "We asked the same question when I worked in the Division Intelligence shop. We noted that President Clinton's approval ratings went up a few points every time he dropped a bomb on someone."
Murtha claims to have played a role in the policy making process which led to the bombing of Belgrade. He has nothing to be proud of.
Cowards don't get Combat V's.......2005-12-16
...they get five deferments when their Country asks them to serve. Like Dick Cheney.
I only read this rather average autobiography after I read a snarky letter from the father of an Iraq Marine in which he called Murtha a coward, and claimed that he was not a Marine, that he was 'nothing' - because of Murtha's call for a specific withdrawal calendar for Iraq.
I don't care if people criticize his wording or even his intelligence, but to call a man a coward because you disagree with his stance is beyond pathetic.
We know that the VC/NVA leaders were encouraged by the actions of the Peace Movement back in Nam days, and I understand people bristling over the modern equivalent regarding Iraq, but to ignore the fact that this Administration has been sending under-protected, inadequately trained and supported units out to Iraq while simultaneously cutting key military funding and reducing Veterans' benefits is a scandal in itself.
Bush and Cheney rely on Knee Jerk Patriotism and pitting Vet against Vet, while the most famous chickenhawk duo in history continue to work with smoke and mirrors.
No, I am not a Democrat. Reagan and Thatcher were the best thing to ever happen to the Free World.
I'm giving this five stars, because his voluntary Nam service is worth ten stars alone. The rest didn't exactly hold my attention quite frankly, but few things do.
Welcome home, Marine.
A true American hero and a clear headed realist.......2005-11-20
Others talk about bravery---John Murtha demonstrates it. Others sought deferments or used family connections to secure cushy, non-combat positions when they were called to serve this country's military. John Murtha had already fought in Korea. He then volunteered years later, leaving his family, to fight in Vietnam. This man is the definition of bravery.
This book will tell you his story and how he came to hold his views of the world. It's a story as genuine as the man himself.
And now this man demonstrates his bravery again by speaking truth to power. John Murtha---the first Vietnam combat veteran elected to Congress---has stood in front of the world and confronted the lies, the madness and the absolute futility of Bush's war and occupation of Iraq.
It takes guts to do what this man has done. And he's afraid of no one.
He's being slandered now. And attacked for expressing his views. Ironically, most of these hateful and mendacious attacks are coming from little pipsqueaks and cowards who are happy to sit on the couch with the remote while others do the fighting.
John Murtha is a conservative; a proud, decent and principled conservative who understands that our country comes first and the truth must be spoken. He's not a phony ultra right-winger who uses "conservative" to hide his true motives. John Murtha's book shows wisdom and realism, honed by his years actually doing what others just talk about.
A fool will "stick to his guns" even when presented with new and clear evidence. A truly wise man will see the light and change his mind. It takes great courage to admit you were wrong and mistaken. But John Murtha understands that to remain silent when you know your mistake has proven so costly is cowardly. And ultimately, treasonous.
John Murtha---a strong and consistent supporter of the military in Congress---has fired the shot heard 'round the world. His words last Thursday have terrified the dwindling numbers who still support Bush's war on Iraq. They can vilify this good and decent man forever. But it won't change the facts. And no one can erase his courageous words.
There's nothing to "win" in Iraq. Our continued occupation is the fuel for terrorism. Let's concentrate on defending our country instead of creating violence and terror in another's country. It's time to end this horror and come home.
This is a great book. God bless you, John Murtha.
Congressman Murtha promotes himself--clichés galore.......2005-11-18
Nothing new here. A lot of clichés (i.e. "know your enemy".) As with any autobiography he paints a good picture of himself.
Right out of high school he joins the Marines and finds himself in Vietnam where he is twice wounded. I suppose this one year in Vietnam and the many years in the Reserves makes him an expert on war.
His discussion of intelligence gathering sort of puts the cart before the horse. Hindsight analysis can make one look brilliant (i.e. McCarthy didn't listen to intelligence about Chinese about to invade from the North.) I read this book standing in a book store--not all of it, because much of it is boring.
Interestingly, he came out today and told Congress and the American people we should cut and run in Iraq. And here I thought Murtha believed leaders should believe their intelligence reports.
I am a Vietnam Veteran. We cut and ran in Vietnam. Congress de-funded the South Vietnamese Army. No ammunition, no parts, the South Vietnamese Army was no match of the North Vietnamese regulars that were supplied with Soviet and Chinese weapons.
Autobiographies are typically short on the author's short comings--this one is no exception.
Gratuitous self-promotion.......2003-10-29
...Ok, I'll grant that Mr. Murtha has had some interesting experiences, some of which even make interesting stories to tell, but underneath it all runs the current of self-promotion. For example, Mr. Murtha runs on and on about the importance of military intelligence, which is true enough, but since he was an intelligence officer, one must take that with a grain of salt. Largely, it's a book of his personal experiences, looked at through his own biases and self-promotion. Take it for what it is -- his story, subjectively told, and not a document of research, objectivity, or analysis.
I give it two stars because taking it for what it is, it's nomt horrible, and it is mildly entertaining. But PLEASE, if you feel like you must read it, get it from the library rather than contributing to Mr. Murtha's wallet.

Book Description
In this revised edition of his earlier biography, Paul Simon provides an inspiring account of the life and work of Elijah Lovejoy, an avid abolitionist in the 1830s and the first martyr to freedom of the press in the United States.
Lovejoy was a native New Englander, the son of a Congregational minister. He came to the Midwest in 1827 in pursuit of a teaching career and succeeded in running his own school for two years in St. Louis. Teaching failed to challenge Lovejoy, however, so he bought a half interest in the St. Louis Times and became its editor. In 1832, after experiencing a religious conversion, he returned east to study for the ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary. After his graduation, Lovejoy was called back to St. Louis by a group of Christian businessmen to serve as the editor of a new religious newspaper, the Observer, promoting religion, morality, and education. It was through this forum that Lovejoy took an ever stronger stance against slavery.
In the slave state of Missouri, such a view was not only
unpopular, but in the eyes of many, criminal. As a result, Lovejoy and his family suffered repeated persecution and acts of violence from angry mobs. In July 1836, in hopes of finding a more tolerant community in a "free" state, he moved both his printing press and his family across the Mississippi River to Alton, Illinois.
The move to Alton was a fateful one. Lovejoy’s press was dismantled and thrown into the river by a mob on the night of its arrival. Lovejoy ordered a new printing press, and it, too, was destroyed eleven months later. A determined and dedicated man, Lovejoy ordered a third press, and city officials took special precautions to ensure its safety after delivery. Nevertheless, an organized and angry mob rolled this third press, still in its crate, into the river exactly one month after Lovejoy’s second press had been destroyed. A fourth press, housed in a large stone warehouse and guarded by Lovejoy and his supporters, met the same fate but only after a drunken mob had killed Lovejoy himself. He was buried two days later, 9 November 1837, on his thirty-fifth birthday. No one was ever convicted of his murder.
Rather than suppressing the abolitionist movement, Lovejoy’s death caused an eruption of antislavery activity throughout the nation. At a protest meeting in Ohio, John Brown dedicated his life to fighting slavery, and Wendell Phillips emerged from a Lovejoy protest meeting in Boston to become a leader in the antislavery fight.
Simon defines Lovejoy’s fight as a struggle for human dignity and the oppressed. He distinguishes Lovejoy as a courageous and admirable individual and his story as an important and enduring one for both the cause of freedom for the slaves and the cause of freedom of the press.
Customer Reviews:
For some, this is a Must Read . . ........2005-11-11
If you: are familiar with the charming but rough little city of Alton, Illinois; live near St. Louis; have heard of Elijah Lovejoy but really don't know anything about him; are interested in the times and issues of Americans in other eras; appreciate the late Senator Paul Simon; or, are interested in the issue of slavery and its abolition in America, then this is a book for you. I acquired it only because I attended one of Senator Simon's book signings, but in reading it I was pleasantly surprised to see how well this short biography is presented and how much I learned. The life and times of Lovejoy are extraordinary pieces of American history that, like so many others, are fading from general public knowledge. Simon started life as a newspaper man, and the writing in this book reflects that. Lovejoy's life is presented with stark objectivity. Editorializing is not necessary with these facts anyway.
This is a well-written and short presentation of Lovejoy. There may be more 'scholarly' biographies out there, but if you are interested in the subject, this is a good bet.
Throwing pearls before swine..........2000-03-27
I've concluded that the epic of Mr. Lovejoy, a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln, is about a man who didn't know when to quit. Former U.S. Senator from Illinois, Paul Simon, has formulated a fast reading, riveting rendition of the way too brief life of this "glutton for punishment." Simon's account coincides well with the embarrassing story presented in Alton,IL these days. Still, I was left with questions, like "Why didn't Reverend Lovejoy move on?" "Was Lovejoy the catalyst for the American Civil War rather than John Brown?" and "Why was Abraham Lincoln's duel in Alton cancelled?" I found the answers by visiting the city where the final months of this anti-slavery newspaper editor's life transpired. The tale of Elijah P. Lovejoy, although 165 years old, gave me plenty of food for thought. If you want to know more there are other books. If you want the gist, this volume will serve you well.

In The Keys to Conflict Resolution, noted mediator Theodore W. Kheel tells how he helped resolve some of the great showdowns between management and labor over the past 50 years in America. Tapped as a mediator by presidents, governors, and business leaders, Kheel is a veteran of more than 30,000 labor disputes. He was in the thick of the national railroad strikes of the 1960s, the nasty fights between New York City's longshoremen and shippers, and the contract wars involving players and owners in the National Football League.
While most books on negotiating teach you to beat an opponent, Kheel stresses the art of persuasion and the techniques of compromise. "There are times when a tough-as-nails approach will work," he writes. "But the basic aim of negotiation is to get your opponent to agree to give you what you want. You may be able to bully him into doing that. You can also be successful by being skillfully persuasive." Kheel is an expert at the three types of "alternative dispute resolutions": mediation, arbitration, and negotiation. And in separate chapters he explains his "ten commandments" and other fine points for mastering each. Kheel peppers the book with anecdotes about his efforts to settle labor disagreements throughout his long career, including those involving personalities such as comedian Carol Burnett and the late Washington newspaper publisher Philip Graham. This book is for anyone seeking advice on how to reach a deal that's best for all sides at the table. --Dan Ring
Book Description
What do the NFL, the A.F.L.-C.I.O., and the U.S. government have in common? All have been clients of Theodore Kheel. Here, the master mediator describes the ten commandments for negotiators and shows how applying a soft touch produces results in any situation.
Customer Reviews:
Good panorama of ADR landscape.......2007-02-04
Theodore Kheel is a luminary in the world of ADR. Throughout the book, the reader gets a glimpse into the numerous and diverse mediations, arbitrations, and negotiations he has been a part of. In a couple of places, he tells us of how a U.S. president (Kennedy at one point, Johnson at another) had called him in to help with a situation. The incidents are fascinating and give the reader an idea of how important alternative dispute resolution (ADR) has become.
However, the subtitle for the books is "Proven Methods of Resolving Disputes Voluntarily." Okay, I have no doubt that the methods of arbitration, mediation, and negotiation do resolve disputes. The subtitle leads me to believe (and the title referring to the "keys") would lead me to more of a step by step approach to enhancing my skills in ADR. I really didn't see that here.
At the end of a couple of sections, Kheel gives us the Ten Commandments(for negotiators and for mediators). Although the stories in the preceding chapters help illustrate, I didn't find there was enough information given to effectively use this in my own work.
For readers looking for a self-help type of book, I would not recommend this. For readers interested in learning more about ADR and how it is shaping relations between people and organizations, then I would recommend this.
Didn't Find The Keys.......2003-03-04
This book is a short, but thorough overview of the dynamics of mediation written by someone with a lifetime's experience in the field. While the book's title promises the "keys to conflict resolution" and the subtitle the "proven methods of resolving disputes voluntarily", the work delivers neither substantially. To its credit, the book provides plenty of useful advice and some wonderful inside information on many newsworthy labor conflicts of the past fifty years. Organizational development facilitators and school leaders frequently find themselves in a role equivalent to mediator, so for the would-be facilitator/leader the book is worth the short amount of time it takes to read it.
The book is light on the specific techniques of mediation, but heavy on the approaches and thinking that an effective mediator requires. According to Kheel, a mediator's role is to bring negotiators together and to help two (or more) sides find an agreeable resolution to their disagreement. To do this, a mediator helps the sides define and frame the issues, agree on procedures for resolving the issues, and then talk through their positions and interests to find reasonably common ground. An effective mediator must "enjoy the confidence of both sides", remain neutral throughout the negotiations no matter what s/he believes to be right, and avoid making recommendations for resolution. On page 82, he offers the ten commandments for mediators (on page 48, he provides an equivalent list for negotiators, who try to get the best deal for their sides, and on page 96, he offers another set of commandments to arbitrators, who decide how a dispute should be resolved). The tenth mediator's commandment reads: "Bear in mind at all times that you are the friend of contesting adversaries. Give them no reason to share you as an enemy." This, among other pieces of seasoned advice, seems worthwhile to anyone who has the task of helping multiple parties move forward on a disagreement.
Typically, negotiations have a three stage life cycle. In stage one, the parties exchange demands; in stage two, they discuss them; and in stage three, they reach accord. Resolutions are usually most effectively found against, what Kheel calls, "the crunch" (a deadline), the point after which the parties have no control over what decision will be made. Without a deadline, parties will see little risk in coming to no decision. A mediator can help negotiations by either keeping the deadline in front of the parties or helping them find one, when none seem apparent. In the everyday workings of an organization, oftentimes a "crunch" is absent. Certainly, interventions in schools might be well-served by some creative thinking around a crunch point.
Chapter five, which describes the five roles of a mediator, serves as the book's fulcrum. These roles are useful intervention approaches for any facilitator. They are: (1) The housekeeper, who keeps track of the details (2) The ringmaster, who helps define, group, and prioritize issues (Kheel offers no techniques on how to do this) (3) The educator, who helps both sides understand the other, and tries to get them to walk in each other's shoes (4) The communicator, who serves as the intermediary and conveys messages accurately and directly, and (5) The innovator, who may offer suggestions for consideration. This chapter, like the others, is filled with stories of real world disputes, which make the book an interesting, if not a fun read. While Kheel holds back on the strategies needed to become an effective mediator, he provides plenty of practical wisdom, which might be helpful for anyone looking to improve their approach to conflict.
I'm still looking for the keys..........2003-03-01

An Excellent Survey of ADR Techniques.......2001-10-26
In The Keys to Conflict Resolution, Ted Kheel details the workings of negotiation, mediation and arbitration: the voluntary techniques of conflict resolution. In easy-to-follow language, citing examples from his own experience, he shows how the techniques can be used to produce positive results in all types of disputes. In basic, straightforward prose he lays out the Ten Commandments for mediators, arbitrators and negotiators: guidelines for generals as well as foot soldiers on the battlefield of conflict resolution - and for those of us who merely want to convince the neighbor to mow the lawn at a normal hour.
I heartily recommend this book on conflict resolution........1999-04-14
I recently read "The Keys to Conflict Resolution," by Theodore W. Kheel (Four Walls, Eight Windows Press, 1999) and loved it. I strongly recommend the publication to your other readers.
The author, who is nationally renowned for his skills in conflict management, shares his wisdom on the subject in the most accessible form imaginable. The book is profound yet simple. It teaches, yet it is not didactic. The invaluable insights of a gifted man are brought to life with anecdotes drawn from years of experience, and examples drawn from current events. Sitting down to read the book is as enjoyable as picking up an issue of your favorite magazine.
I especially recommend the book as a resource material for graduate and post-graduate courses dealing with conflict management-- whether it be in the field of labor relations, community relations, foreign relations, or even domestic relations. The material provides a goldmine of information, presented in a form that would be ideal for stimulating class room discussion.
