Book Description
More and more, company rescue has become a viable alternative to liquidation of a failing company via bankruptcy proceedings. Company rescue seeks to preserve the healthy parts of a company and to put it back on secure footing. Rescue of Companies reports practical experiences on company rescues with particular emphasis on transactional aspects. Drawing on expert experience, the book comprises 24 national reports, including reports from 23 jurisdictions and a General Report which offers a summary of major differences, peculiarities, and common principles arising out of the various jurisdictions. The comparative approach makes this a useful work for those in academia. Practitioners in bankruptcy law, corporate counsel, and businesspeople should also read this work to stay abreast of a growing trend in treating companies that confront financial failure.

Customer Reviews:
50 sales lessons from 50 top salesmen!.......2007-03-22
This is an outstanding book consisting of 50 fascinating sales stories by 50 of the "World's Greatest Salespeople", with cogent comments from the author on the lessons that can be learned from each story.
These are generally short chapter, perhaps 4-6 pages each, making them ideal for a brief review or for a sales meeting. Topics cover every facet of selling, and drawn from a wide variety of fields--but with universal applicability. Excellent vacation book for a salesman. Not heavy reading, but definitely heavy return on investment. Good gift.
Great Book.......2004-03-18
If you're in sales-your gonna love this book. Many of these stories are classic sales stories about achieving sales success. I believe the best way to learn how to do anything is find a role model. Find someone who has done it. That what this book does. It shows you many real life examples of what really works in the sales business. Read, enjoy and apply them into your situation. Highly recommended.
Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works: How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated
Highly Recommended!.......2001-10-26
One of Robert Shook's first bits of wisdom for salespeople is that enthusiasm is contagious. He proves this in his latest book, which crackles with his own palpable excitement for the topic of sales and the anecdotes that he's compiled to illustrate his points. He peppers his introductions with slang and cliches. Oddly, this is a plus, making the writing honest, human and real. The book is simply and concisely organized. Shook wants to entertain as well as inform his audience. We [...] recommend this book to those who are in sales, those who supervise salespeople, and those who love good business war stories.
Chicken Soup for the Salesperson's Soul!.......1999-11-30
This book gets me going when I really couldn't give a rip. It has given me countless little ideas to use in my daily sales life. It sems to work well too. I'm now a top performing sales rep for one of the best sales forces in the world.

Customer Reviews:
Great Party Item.......2007-01-11
I loved this book because the recipes are simple, yet it offers some new twists.
Great recipes and great design.......2006-04-11
We've purchased a number of martini and other drink recipe books before coming across this one. One of the best things about this book is its spiral design. It lays flat, which means you don't have to try to hold it open or prop it up while mixing up a drink. Can't tell you how frustrating it is trying to whip up a martini or other stylish drink while trying to hold a book open! This book has great recipes, both old and new, is organized by type of liquor and even gives you ideas for the best glass to serve your masterpieces in. I just purchased another copy to give as a wedding/shower gift for a young couple.
They even got the Singapore Sling right!.......2006-01-16
This bartender guide is both colorful and full of photos. It's not also reasonable organized but has color codes for the different types of drinks (Gin, Vodka, etc.) to make it easy to navigate the cocktails. Also, I was happy to see a bartender guide that has the CORRECT Singapore Sling ingredients listed. So many others don't even have the real one used by the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. One thing that makes sense about this book, is that its spiral bound a real plus!
Thoroughly informative guide for the first-timer or the enthusiast.......2005-09-20
I found a used copy of this book at a local bookstore, and bought it out of sheer curiosity. I knew nothing prior to mixing drinks or even how to use a shaker, and was thoroughly amused at how drinking enthusiasts around the world could come up with 780 unique -- and sometimes downright perverse and ridiculous -- names for the world's finest cocktails.
There are two things that I love about this book -- it's brilliantly arranged as a reference guide, and it's geared for both the entry-level hobbyist and the more experienced enthusiast in mind.
Unlike many other bartender guides that are tiny paperbacks or printed on thicker paper that is harder to flip-through, Salvatore Calabrese's book is built like a true index in mind: it's a hard-cover with spiral-bound pages inside printed on glossy color paper. The 780 drinks are divided into logical categories (brandy, rum, wine, vodka, shooters, punches, nonalcoholic, etc.) and each drink's mixing instructions are designed to be read in less than 30 seconds. As a quick reference, I have not seen a book that is better written with clarity and brevity in mind.
Any book I'm willing to pay for as an introduction into a hobby needs to me interested with the history, the basics on how-tos, and the fine science of becoming an enthusiast. The book's opening chapters cover everything from tools & equipment, glassware, and bar terminology to flavors & garnishes, proper techniques for juicing limes, and how to properly use ice!
Nearly every single recipe includes a brief history as to where the naming scheme caming from, and there's some description to the regional origins of certain spirits and bases as well.
I'm not planning on becoming a professional bartender, but if I were going to, I'd imagine this text would easily be one of the required reads and "keeper" books for someone truly interested in pursuing a long-term education into the fine art of drink mixing.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite cocktail book.......2007-05-19
This book is indispensable! It contains recipes for old-fashioned cocktails (and their history) as well as new "foofy" drinks. I much prefer it over Mr Boston for its variety. I enjoy drinks that are simple and use bitters or aperitifs, and this book has plenty of them! It also includes non-alcoholic drinks for the tee-totaler.
I would recommend this book for anyone looking to build their bar and learn how to make some delicious drinks that go far beyond the boring martini-bar cocktail.
Pros and Cons.......2007-01-24
Pros: Awesome book. Easy to follow. Cheaper than bar-tending sites offer.
Cons: It doesn't have EVERY drink you're looking for, but it has a good enough selection you won't be disappointed.
great book.......2007-01-05
This was a great book. I just wish it had listed the drinks by alcohol ingredients. But overall, I loved it.
Good Drinks Good Fun!.......2005-01-25
This is a good book for people who want to know how to mix drinks and how to mix them well. It also has some non-alcholic mixes for the kids parties and stuff! And the cover is water proof and has a place keeping ribbon too!
Very good!.......2004-06-30
Got this book and was immediately impressed by the loads of recipes. However, there are some good ones missing and some of the recipes are tinkered with a bit (as most are), but that's just nitpicking. Overall an outstanding recipe book! Well worth the price!

good for a second drink mixing book on the shelf.......2001-07-07
entirely old fashioned drinks, many you may have never heard of before. since old fashioned drinks have become trendy lately, more of these recipies are popping up on hip specialty drink lists of lounge bars. don't expect to use any of the latest schnapps with these drinks, and many of them include natural ingredients for flavoring.
be sure to have a modern bartending book for pleasing the crowd, but this should be for secret specialties from years gone by.
Lots of Drinks, but Nothing Modern.......1998-07-17
This book is filled with different drinks, but it seems none of them are made today (in the USA, at least) I recommend buying another book if you plan on being a bartender or serving drinks at home. If bizarre cocktails from the 20s are what your looking for, then buy this book.
Book Description
An illustrated celebration of libation.
While mixed drinks have a long history, the cocktail as we know it today has its roots during Prohibition in the 1930s. Homemade hooch, bathtub gin and other blackmarket beverages were usually unpalatable on their own. But add some juice, fruit, and a splash of sugar and voila! the results were intoxicating.
The Complete Bartender's Guide is a lavishly illustrated cocktail sourcebook. There is so much more to cocktails than the drinks themselves. Discover their fascinating history, lore, recipes, and even where to find them at some of the world's best bars.
This 400-page book goes way beyond any professional bartender's guide.
Key features include:
A-Z listing of 1,000 cocktail recipes
Serving suggestions and tasting notes
Brief histories of spirits
Essentials for a well-stocked bar
Brand and spirit recommendations
Directory of the world's top 500 cocktail bars
The Complete Bartender's Guide will be a practical yet fascinating addition to bookshelves and bars alike.

The best book for any bar.......1999-10-16
This is the book you need when a customer asks for those non-standard drinks. It contains all the standards as well as a ton of unusual drinks, plus quite a few shooters. The recipes are easy to follow, with glass recommendations and pouring instructions. All the drinks are listed aphabetically (alaises are listed with the prime name). Several drinks have alternative recipes. The spiral bound version is a must. The index groups the recipes by the prime ingredients. Cons: The index is in very small print, difficult to read in a bar. I would like to see the aliases in the index. It would also be nice to have another index by catagory (eg: shooters, etc). There are no blank pages to write additional recipes. There is software version available (pricey) that allows you to search and select by keyword (eg: martini, etc).
Fabulous!!!!.......1999-06-05
This book was perfect for me-- I got it so I would know what drinks to order when I went to a bar or club, and it helped me out way more than that!! I love it!
The best book I've used for making great drinks........1998-08-24
This drink guide beats Old Mr. Boston and other drink guides hands down. The drinks are easy to find, make sense to make and it has the drinks my friends and customers want. My one complaint is that it is hard to find in regular bookstores.
Customer Reviews:
The author.......2007-01-15
I just wanted to say that my Grandfather wrote the American Standard Bartenders Guide. As well as Classic Cocktails, Tropical Cocktails and Elegant Wine Cocktails. He passed away in 1992 from cancer. When he produced the book in the 80s it was well ahead of its time. Very few bartender guides had a full color picture of the drink on one side and how to make it on the otherside. The book has a space for notes as well as measuring chart, terms etc. He set the standard of what a lot of bartender guides are like today. He was in the middle of negotiations with Seagrams to buy the rights to his book..but he passed away before the deal was made. Every drink in the book was made by him at the Brigadoon in Vacaville CA. Then the drink had its picture taken by a professional photographer named Bill Honig of Vacaville Ca. He owned Vacaville liquor emporium for many years. He has traveled the world extensively and was a master bartender. (he reminded me of the Irish guy in the movie Cocktail. He had the gift of gab. He was Cherokee indian and Irish and was raised on a reservation. His Sons and Daughters were great athletes and still reside in the Vacaville area. His son Tommy Murphy Jr. Was a linebacker for UCLA, BYU and University of Hawaii. He attended Vacaville High school and was a state champion wrestler, star football player and baseball player. He was a blue chip player in the late 70's. The book is a great book for any bartender. I have personally seen the book in use from Reno to Dallas Texas in many of their hotspots. He was a great man with a great vision to improve the skills of many the bartender.

Book Description
From America's most celebrated living historian comes this "sprightly, straightforward account of the first third of an active and charmed life" (New York Times). Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. turns a studied eye on a personal past and reconstructs the history that has made him such an iconic figure for generations of readers. A LIFE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY offers rare and revealing access to both the private world of a great American writer and the fine-grained texture of the American century. Ranging from a fondly remembered childhood in the Midwest to a fascinating, storied academic and political life, this volume is an important addition to Schlesinger's body of work, "every bit as well written as anything Schlesinger has done" (Providence Sunday Journal) and "sure to be used by students of the times for years to come" (Boston Globe). "With style and humor and a master historian's deft blending of personal detail with epic events" (Wall Street Journal), Schlesinger evokes the struggles, the questions, the paradoxes, and the triumphs that shaped our era as only he can do.
Customer Reviews:
Entertainimg memoir - Excellently descriptive writing.......2006-01-22
Arthur Schlesinger is one of the pre-eminent American historians of the 20th century. He is a winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, for The Age of Jackson (1946) and A Thousand Days (1966), Schlesinger's account of the Kennedy administration for whom he was a special assistant.
The man has seen and experienced a lot which is why this memoir is so interesting and in many ways enlightening. Born in 1917, he claims his motivation for writing this memoir is that he should do it while he "can still remember anything."
The reader need have no fear that Schlesinger is losing anything. The level of recall and sometimes even minutia in the book is astonishing. Much of his source is journals and diaries that he seems to have kept religiously.
A Life in the 20th Century is a very enjoyable read partly because of excellent content but also due to some wonderfully descriptive prose. Schlesinger's ability to paint pictures of characters is a lesson in communication. Friends of his father - also a historian - were "brilliant and effervescent," "dour and trenchant," "jovially caustic."
Schlesinger's memoir also shows how much western society (U.S. particularly) matured during the century in question. The level of Puritanism, distrust, isolationism and racism which permeated the first half of the century has to a great extent dissipated.
Schlesinger write, "As late as 1939, the Gallup poll reported that a third of respondents thought it indecent for men to appear topless" on the beach. The level of Anglophobia during the thirties is difficult to comprehend today, given as in Margaret Thatcher's famous phrase "the special relationship" between the United States and England. However, there was a virulent anti-British mood, motivated mainly by a belief that the U.S. had been hoodwinked into the First World War. Schlesinger suggests that the level of debate between the isolationists and those who wished to take on Hitler was more vicious and aggressive than even the national debate over Vietnam.
As an Irish person, it is illustrative to read that the great black scholar and activist, W.E.B Du Bois wrote in his memoir, quoted by Schlesinger, that "the racial angle was more clearly defined against the Irish than against me."
The chapter on `The Thirties' is particularly evocative. Hitler's shadow looms ominously through the decade. "We danced the night through, my English friends not knowing when they would dance again, the purple shadows fell, and Hitler's clock ticked steadily on."
Just how close the world came to domination by totalitarian regimes - fascist or communist - can be gauged by the fact that by the end of 1940, there were only a dozen democracies in the world.
The liberal Schlesinger is an avowed anti-communist who paints a very vibrant picture of the anti-communist fervor that ran through America after the war. While writing very critically about communist intrigue, he does give a number of American communists credit for believing - however wrongly, that the best future for mankind was in communism. Schlesinger never hides his anti-communism. Sometimes this interferes with his objectivity about individuals e.g. he describes former Communist Party USA chief Earl Browder in the following terms, "The benign exterior was marred by a pair of shifty eyes.... Each word carefully planned and followed by a crafty smile. His face had an overcrowded look - not enough room between forehead and chin for eyes and nose." Not what I would call objective!
The author's personality does not come through in the memoir. He does make a number of references to being, or being seen as a rather pompous individual, given to outbursts of anger. There are also very few humorous examples or references in what is generally a very good read. Indeed the only sections where I lost interest were when he referenced the innumerable social occasions, local personalities and the very many `dear friends' he got to meet.
All in all, well worth reading if you want to get a good overview of US and world politics during a very traumatic time. It has definitely given me the motivation to read other works from a fine historian and wonderful writer. Not sure if that is how Arthur M. Schlesinger wants to be remembered though.
A trip down memory lane.......2005-07-24
For aging baby bombers like myself, Arthur M. Schiesinger's A LIFE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY is a trip down memory lane. When I got the recorded version out of the library and realized it was 20 tapes, I figured that I would never finish it, barring a drive across country. However, the melodious voice of Nelson Runger, with whom I have traveled many miles with other recorded books, makes Schiesinger's story not only interesting but memorable.
The book relates much of Schiesinger's life and the hundreds of people that he had close contact with. Many of the people that he mentions are familiar. His war time experiences brought back memories of stories from my parents. There are hundreds of bits of Americana along with Scheisinger's insights into many famous incidents of the 20th century.
There are early glimpses of people who went on to be major figures in American politics and history.
I certainly don't know that I could have read all 680 plus pages of this work, but the 20 tapes passed very quickly and I really enjoyed it.
An excellent memoir (with a little history thrown in).......2001-10-05
As a Schesinger fan, I found this book a delightful insight into the life of the best living historian. The book was very well written, and as a current college student, I found his account of his college years particularly interesting.
I would especially recommend this book to anyone interested in either twentieth century history or twentienth century American culture.
Interesting book from an interesting man.......2001-07-12
Schlesinger writes a book of personal recollections that reads much like a grandfather relating his rich and rewarding life onto his next generation. It is not a hard facts history book, and it will not be remembered as such (regardless of Dr. Kissenger's overly optimistic review on the dust jacket).
There are high points and low points to this book. His experiences at Harvard, worn torn Europe, and the ideological battles between communists and liberals over control of the American left were fascinating. However, we are also privy to every movie, play, book, and cocktail dinner that schlesinger ever attended. It's interesting to gain this perspective, but it gets tedious. This book could have used substantial editing.
I'm a Schlesinger fan, but I skimmed through many pages. Despite these shortcoming, Schlesinger still imparts his genious.
Too Much Arrogance Too Little Substance.......2001-05-24
I learned very little by reading this book. It is not a book about history in the first half of the twentieth century but rather a personal commentary of the opinions of the author. The reader becomes so soured by the importance of being "Harvard" that little else seems to matter. Liberalism, to which I subscribe, is promoted extensively but, in my view, Schlesinger misses numerous opportunities to justify liberalism in circumstances during 1917-1950 when it was needed most. Schlesinger appears obsessed by the need to be "accepted" as if it were necessary to obtain the upper hand in each of his discussions, arguments or reviews of his "Jackson". I understood the real meaning of the word inane when I read Henry Kissinger's comment that, "This book will surely be regarded as the definitive history of the first half of the twentieth century". Were I teaching an advanced course in modern history at a college or university, my students would question the purpose of recommending this book.

Book Description
Northern Reflection is a collection of wild, wacky, and nostalgic short stories based on the author Jerry Harju's childhood in Upper Michigan in the 1940's. His youthful adventures include standing on the railroad tracks to play chicken with an oncoming ore train, riding on a fire truck to a blaze at his own house, and the difficulties of picking up girls in the midst of a frigid Michigan winter.

Doubled Over With Laughter.......2000-04-20
In the introduction to his book "Northern Reflections", Jerry Harju reveals that it's a book about growing up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the 1940's and is perhaps most appreciated by those who can identify with that.
While I'm familiar with Upper Michigan and its culture, I did not grow up in the 40's, and still found plenty of good reading here.
If you're new to reading humorous books (as I am), I recommend this one as a great place to start. It's an easy read, comprised of short chapters, each its own story, so you can pick it up, read a chapter, and come back for more later as time permits.
The author's humor has a wonderful way of sneaking up on a person. And just when I thought it couldn't get any funnier, I'd start the next chapter, and before I knew it, I'd find myself doubled over with even greater helpless laughter! Teens may appreciate it, too. From a first job, to dating, to his first car, Jerry covers it all, against the backdrop of small-town life in the rugged climate of northern Michigan.
"Yoopers" (as U.P.'ers are known), especially, should appreciate it; but even if you're not a Yooper, there's still lots to laugh about.
Book Description
RESPONSIBLE MANAGERS GET RESULTS How the Best Find Solutions--Not Excuses
What makes a successful manager? Intelligence, leadership, prowess, outstanding organizational skills, just plain old perseverance? These are not enough, say the authors. Responsibility -- being responsible enough to do what it takes to produce the necessary results -- is the prime determinant of management (and business) success.
This book contains detailed, step-by-step guidelines and procedures for developing the two key skills of a responsible manager -- problem solving and getting people to work together. Using those skills, readers will enhance collaboration throughout their organizations * develop optimal solutions to problems using an original seven-step method * design effective teams and manage group processes to produce results, and more.
Managers, trainers, and HR professionals disillusioned with quick-fix fads will find this fundamental approach to success refreshing and invaluable.
GERALD W. FAUST, Ph.D. is president of Faust Management Corp. and a world-renowned speaker on management issues. RICHARD I. LYLES, Ph.D. has w5 years of management consulting experience and developed the problem-solving approach featured here. WILL PHILLIPS is a senior associate of Faust Management Corp. and a training expert. The authors all reside in San Diego, CA.

Accountability for results is key.......2006-01-27
Everyone may agree that creating a sense of responsibility in employees and managers is a benefit to an organization. But what is meant by responsibility? And just how can you go about creating a sense of responsibility within a company? These are the questions the authors of this book have tried to answer.
To begin with, it is more important for employees to be responsible for results than for them to be responsible for activities. Employees may, in fact, be able to prove that they performed several activities, without actually achieving the desired result or goal. A good manager, say the authors, must make employees understand that their responsibility lies in achieving the goal behind the work, and not just the work itself. Responsibility has two dimensions. You are responsible to somebody, and you are responsible for something. Employees must be responsible to the customer and the organization. They must also be responsible for results, not just activities or tasks.
Motivating workers to be responsible to the company and for results must proceed from four necessary conditions:
1. The company must be an organization that workers are ready to commit themselves to.
2. Employees must understand what results they are expected to produce.
3. Employees must have a proper reward and recognition system.
4. Employees must have the skills and knowledge necessary to create the results.
A Different Perspective on "Entitlement".......2001-01-05
In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker reluctantly agrees to "try" to salvage his spaceship. The Yoda replies, "Do or do not. There is no try." The authors of this book agree with the Yoda. They suggest that responsible managers insist on achieving results. While chairman and CEO of Pier 1 Imports, Clark Johnson observed that he always encouraged effort but only rewarded performance. Johnson may not have read this book but he certainly agrees with the key points its authors make.
In Chapter 1, they revisit and redefine the concept of responsibility. In subsequent chapters, they discuss a leader's responsibility to the customer, to the organization, and to everyone within the organization. They view the responsible manager as a problem solver and, in Chapter 5, provide a problem-solving approach "that works." They then shift their attention to "Getting the Right Answer" and "Getting the Right Result." For the authors, judgment is the foundation of responsibility. They also assert, in Chapter 9, that there is "a rationale for teams that work" and then explain what that rationale is...also, what it requires of everyone involved. In Chapters 10 and 11, they answer two key questions: How to design an effective team? and How to maximize productivity among the members of a team? In the final chapter, the authors explain what is needed to keep responsible change alive.
According to the authors, "most change efforts fail because of an inadequate understanding of what produces value in the business or of how human beings change." They then offer eight specific reasons why change efforts fail:
1. We like to feel good. [change threatens comfort levels]
2. No top leadership support [if "they" don't care, why should anyone else?]
3. Change efforts do not address the whole system [a fragmented approach tends to focus on symptoms rather than on causes]
4. We hide failure [success is reassuring...failure could involve blame and guilt]
5. Misunderstanding of what has changed [See #3]
6. Too few understand the rationale for change efforts [ie those who are expected to support change initiatives are not told how and why their support is so essential]
7. Neglect of transition [failure to understand that change is an incremental process, not a quantum leap from "here" to "there"]
8. There is no structure for change [within the organization, there are no policies and procedures to resolve the conflict between "what is done now" and "doing better"]
Hence the importance of having a sense of responsibility to help solve problems shared by everyone, of having patience during the inevitably slow process of organizational change, and of having self-discipline throughout that challenging process. The authors correctly point out that (1) "everyone must be willing to carry his or her share of the load", (2) "Sustainable efforts take two to three years but result in dramatically more healthy and more exciting organizations", and (3) "The discipline of change refers to the regularity with which change is pursued as well as emerging skills that are developed through devotion to change." A responsible leader understands all this, conducts herself or himself accordingly, and requires everyone else to do so also. Working together, they identify problems and then solve them. "There is no try...." and excuses are unacceptable.
One final point: Recent research suggests that by 2025 at the latest (but probably much sooner), organizational rewards will be completely based on performance. To varying degrees, responsible leaders have been supporting that policy for decades.
Great Ideas for Achieving Success.......1999-11-25
This is one of the most entertaining and useful books about leadership and management I've ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone in any position of responsibility. Both the concepts and the techniques are invaluable.
A positive way to integrate work and life.......1998-09-27
The authors focus a bright light on the vital role and enduring quality of personal responsiblity in the work place. Imagine if each of us really did take responsibility for customer satisfaction, getting the right results, and problem solving! We could really make our workplaces stages for personal satisfaction, even joy. This is the future the authors believe in and they've provided a strong tool set in the book to help us get there.
A clear and concise approach for improved results........1998-09-01
The focus here is on the end results, the outcomes of management action. The authors present a systematic, thoughtful, practical and step by step method of achieving better results by becoming more effective as problem solvers and its told in story format with interesting and captivating vignettes. Includes several chapters on team building, the elements of team effectivness, and teams that work.
