Book Description
Suzy Favor-Hamilton is the premier female middle-distance runner in the United States, whose many honors include six U.S. National Championships, nine NCAA Titles, and four Big Ten Athlete of the Year Awards (now called the Suzy Favor awards). In this book, she teams up with Jose Antonio, Ph.D., one of the preeminent exercise and sports nutrition scientists in the country, to show young female runners how to improve at their favorite sport. Currently, there are 4.6 million women in the United States who run 100 days or more each year. In Fast Track, they will discover: l How much, how hard, and when to train (and rest) l The pros and cons of strength training, cross-training, stretching, and other non-running exercises l How to avoid the top 10 mistakes runners usually make l Why Suzy's diet program is very different than is generally recommended-and how this program has led to dramatic improvements in her running and her life off the track Suzy's real-world experience competing at the highest level in athletics combined with Dr. Antonio's in-depth knowledge of exercise and nutrition science will make this book a must read for all female runners-both competitive and recreational-who want to go faster, play harder, and minimize the risk of injury.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Read!.......2007-08-27
This book was so informative on every aspect for a female runner. Suzy made the nutrition aspect so easy to understand. Really takes the guesswork out of what to eat and when.
Fantastic! Don't miss this one........2007-04-18
I randomly picked this book up in a book store and was pleasantly surprised as I thumbed through it. It was exactly what I was looking for - something that could advise me thoroughly on necessary changes to my training, nutrition and much more in order to start getting in real shape for running competitively. I was amazed at the level of detail in this book - and it's the kind of detail you need. In no other book about running would you expect a thorough description of the exact differences in protein powders and what time of day you should take each kind, etc...and then a chart of the brands and their ingredients. It's perfect and practical. Not at all repetitive or boring. A very easy, useful read. I started taking notes as I read and had a comprehensive shopping list for the grocery store the next day. Don't miss this one!
Probably useful for more advanced runners, but not me.......2006-12-27
I found this book to be very repetitive, and not very helpful. A few of the chapters I find interesting, like the one where she explains that for runners, the USDA food guide pyramid should really be flipped upside down. But she used her backup evidence from this chapter over and over again throughout the book. I really only need to hear "Fish is an essential food" once or twice to get it into my head. Also, towards the end, when Suzy gives sample training plans, I was very upset. Pretty much all of them are only suitable for runners who have way too much time on their hands, and are at a college level of training. I was looking for a way to spice up my training, but all I got were endless lists of two-a-days (who has time for that?) and hour long runs (the average high school girl doesn't have that much endurance). She doesn't seem to understand that we all can't be like her and perfect our diets, allowing only 5 treats per week, and running to what, for most of us, would be almost complete exhaustion. Suzy probably isn't the best person to write a book like this for female runners, because ever since she was in high school, she's been a star, and has never really experienced the long, hard transition from nothing at all to strenuous workouts.
I gave it 3 stars, because she had good intentions, but didn't pull them out the best way possible. I did however get some good nutrition tips, and learned some new strength exercises to add to my normal routine.
From a coach for young runners.......2006-11-24
This is fantastic. Suzy Favor has been a woman to be emulated since she first showed up as a world class middle distance runner. She touches some of the very important parts of the physical and psychological needs of an aspiring young female through her own experiences.
In using her own life as a template, many of the young ladies who read this will make better choices when confronted with decisions that could have an adverse impact. As a coach I've seen too many who want to use these young people for their own benefit without regard to their well being or safety.
Nice going Suzy. You were a great runner and are still a great role model.
Perfect Resource for Women Runners.......2006-03-09
I liked this book because of it's context and because it was easy to implement. It is targeted for female runners but I have reccommended the book to a varietay of athletes from young, older, male, female, swimmers, runners, bikers. This has been the best infromation I have recieved on nutrition for athletes.

Book Description
This age of fierce competition and technological leaps has undermined the traditional ways of doing business. In The New Magnet Marketing, John R. Graham reveals how to solve one of the most enduring problems any business faces--how to attract customers and make them want to do business with you time and time again.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but beware if you have the first Magnet Marketing.......2002-02-12
This book has excellent ideas to get you to think long term about marketing and position. There are specific suggestions for attracting and retaining customers. HOWEVER, if you own the original Magnet Marketing, don't be fooled into thinking the New Magnet Marketing has new concepts. In fact, it is the EXACT SAME book with a few words changed to update it. ALL the chapters, concepts, etc... are virtually word for word the original Magnet Marketing. If you never read the original, you can use this. If you have the original, don't bother.
Not Indispensable but Certainly of Substantial Value.......2001-01-05
Graham's "fast-track strategy" may not "put your company on top" but it CAN help you and your associates to answer key questions such as these:
1. What are the major differences between sales and marketing? Why are these differences so important to understand?
2. Why are most traditional selling strategies and skills no longer effective?
3. How can we identify the largest market of prime prospects to buy what we sell?
4. What are the most effective strategies for press relations? (That is, what are the best ways to maximize publicity for our company?)
5. How can newsletters, brochures, and direct mail be used to maximum advantage?
6. Exactly what is segmented database marketing? What its unique functions, features, and benefits?
7. For those with limited resources, what are the most effective Internet strategies to consider?
8. What are the major obstacles to "creative thinking"? How can they be overcome?
9. What are Graham's 17 "Laws"?
10. What are his "Ten Commandments for Losing Customers"?
Graham offers sensible answers to all of these questions. What I find remarkable is the fact that, after accumulating more than 30 years of real-world experience in both sales and marketing, Graham seems to have concluded that most of the "lessons" (ie "Commandments") he learned are either wrong or inadequate. (See Chapter 2, "Challenging the Traditional Wisdom.") He has assembled a "How to Do It" manual in which he examines the wide range of subjects indicated by the 10 questions previously listed. Graham's use of the magnet metaphor is apt because it correctly suggests the importance of both attracting customers and keeping them. In this book, he explains HOW.

In My Top 5 Cookbooks.......2006-01-31
I loved this cookbook so much I photocopied the entire (out of print) copy my library had several years ago, which cost me at least three times what I would've paid if I could've bought it new. I'm thrilled to find it used, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Everything I have made from this book over the last 10 or 12 years has been delicious (with the exception of a failed rice bran pickle experiment I forgot about when I went on vacation...whoops). Elizabeth Andoh is to Japanese cooking what Barbara Tropp was to Chinese; passionate, knowledgeable, down to earth, the kind of cook you wish was your neighbor.
Oh, would that some smart publisher reprint this book..........2001-01-01
Hands down, this is my FAVORITE Japanese cookbook. Elizabeth Andoh, an American married to a Japanese, is not only a fine cook, cooking teacher, and journalist in her own right, but is in the unique position of being an American consultant to the Japanese food industry. This is her first cookbook, published in 1980 (it was followed by "An American Taste of Japan" in 1985). It's a primer of "pure" Japanese home cooking -- like Mama used to make, if your mama happened to be Japanese. I learned to cook in the kitchens of Japanese friends, and the flavors of Ms. Andoh's recipes make me swooningly "natsukashii" (nostalgic) for Japan.
The book's 130 recipes are organized in the classic order of Japanese cuisine: soups, rice, noodles, braised and simmered foods, grilled foods, deep-fried foods, steamed foods, mixed and sauced foods, pickles, and sweet things and beverages. No photographs, but crystal clear recipes are complemented by beautiful line drawings that illustrate ingredients and techniques. A section in the front details Japanese cooking techniques and equipment, while a glossary at the back not only translates the names of unusual ingredients, but explains how to choose and store them. In all, it's a wonderful book that I can't recommend highly enough.

Customer Reviews:
Happy Moderate Knitter.......2007-01-10
Good variety of patterns and styles for whole the family. Directions are clear for those of us,who are not advanced knitters.
Disappointing for this crocheter.......2006-10-19
Thankfully I got this from the library (I try not to buy a book unless I've checked it out a few times first).
I'm giving this book 3 stars because even though the knitting patterns might be great (I don't know, I don't knit) they really should just make it a knitting book and get it over with. The subtitle states "50 Knit and Crochet Projects" but what they really meant to say is "46 Knit Projects and 4 Crochet Ones Thrown In There So We Could Get Crocheters To Buy The Book". I'm not kidding, there were a total of FOUR crochet sweaters in the entire book (I counted). Of the four crochet projects, two are very similar in look (big, open holes, simple sweaters). Another is a granny square sweater that's nice looking and the fourth is a really nice sweater I might try to make so I might get something out of it after all. Still, if I had paid for this book I'd be mighty ticked off.
I also think that if you are having a book with knitting and crochet, you should have an easy way to find one or the other. An index would be nice, or have the crochet in one section, knit in another. Instead, all the sweaters are listed under their themes (Easy Does It, Tropical Coolers, etc) with knit on one page, crochet on the next, knit on the next 20, etc.
I'm sure it's a lovely book for beginning knitters, I just think they should take out the four token crochet patterns and focus on knitting instead of trying to play both fields.
Very easy sweaters!.......2003-10-29
I love several of the patterns in this book. I would describe myself as a knitting novice but still found myself very comfortable with most of the patterns.
The book actually breaks down the sweater into categories such as "beginner" or "intermediate" which I've found very useful. I've limited myself to beginner sweaters so far. The other nice thing about this book is that it gives the complete information for the yarn that is used. This makes substituting very easy since the yarns used tend to be on the pricey side. I am making a sweater from this book right now and it would have cost me $$$ to use the yarn listed but I was able to substitue for only a quarter of the cost...
One thing to note, most of the patterns are for knitters. If you are looking for a book of crocheted sweaters I would recomend that you keep looking. I found only four crochet patterns and only two of them were at the beginner level.
There are patterns for women, men and kids. I actually found a pattern that my DH likes as well. The patterns are very stylish and as a 20-something I liked almost all of them.
The only thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is the small number of crocheted patterns. I find the title to be a bit deceptive.
Mostly for knitters........2002-08-26
There are only a handful of crochet patterns in this book. The bulk of the patterns are for knitters. However, there are some very nice things in here.

Book Description
From acclaimed biographer Stephen E. Ambrose comes the life of one of the most elusive and intriguing American political figures, Richard M. Nixon. From his difficult boyhood and earnest youth to bis ruthless political campaigns for Congress and Senate to his defeats in '60 and '62, Nixon emerges life-size in all his complexity. Ambrose charts the peaks and valleys of Nixon's first fifty years -- his critical support as a freshman congressman of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan; his involvement in the House Committee on Un-American Activities; his aggressive pursuit of Alger Hiss; his ambivalent relationship with Eisenhower; and more. It is the consummate biography; it is a stunning political odyssey.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-12-30
This book is my favorite one on Nixon. Ambrose did a great job on explaining Nixon's early years as a child and a young man. I believe that Ambrose gave Nixon a decent and fair treatment in this book. I would highly recommend the book.
Nixon: The Education of the READER.......2006-01-23
NIXON is an exhaustive and in-depth look at the early years of one of America's most notorious politicians -- Stephen Ambrose has really done his homework.
More than the cold hard facts, though, the reader gets up-close and personal with Nixon -- you really understand what makes him tick, which is probably why you decided to pick up the book in the first place. Afterall, who doesn't want to know more about this complex figure? He was so frequently regarded as "uncharismatic," and "untrustworthy," that even the casual observer of history has to wonder how such a person became President.
I was not only compelled to learn how such an unlikely man gained the presidency, but how this man took such a gift, and betrayed it to his flaws. I knew the answer was, simply, in what made him tick as a human being. I found those answers here.
Surprisingly, one also gains in reading this book a broad education in not only Nixon the man, but his era. This is the great thing about a well-written biography; it can be a wonderful cross-section of not only biographical information but historical as well. In reading Ambrose's account, you will learn a thing or two about how our government works, and will walk away with a historical perspective that will help you to understand today's complex and heated political climate all the better.
The one area where NIXON is lacking, however, is in the exploration (or lack thereof) of Nixon's family life. We are constantly reminded that Nixon was "never there," and that despite his absence, his family "loved him" very much, particularly his girls (who adored him, apparently), but why? We don't get many details on Nixon's relationship with his girls, which I thought would have provided an even clearer window into the subject's complicated psyche. I've heard that whatever his public persona, he was a very loving father. In my opinion, the book suffers for not exploring this deeper.
Though Stephen Ambrose, by his own admission, is no Nixon fan, he is to be applauded for his objective effort in analyzing our former President. While he doesn't let him off the hook (no doubt about it, Nixon played political hardball almost unscrupulously), you will --through reading this book-- come to sympathize and perhaps even find respect for Nixon. Believe it or not, he was in many ways a principled man, and had a deep-rooted code of ethics which governed his direction in life (I mean, look at Watergate -- for the terrible deed it was, at least he wasn't trying to line his own pockets or anything). Unfortunately, as you will learn, he was also too ambitious and too insecure, and these flaws would prove to be his undoing, as they sometimes blinded his morals.
NIXON show us that these flaws would, even early in life, lay the foundations for the subject's eventual downfall. However, this book also teaches us something: we all have flaws, and we are all just as capable as giving in to them as he was.
The life of Richard M. Nixon, is, more than anything else, a cautionary tale.
As the fictional President in Oliver Stone's film NIXON comments whilst gazing at a portrait of JFK; "When they looked at you, they saw what they wanted to be...
When they look at ME, they see what they ARE."
Moves fast and tells a great story.......2005-04-01
I was 400 pages into this book when I realized there was no way that Ambrose was going to get through the Nixon Presidency and Watergate in the next 200 pages.
Why is that relevant?
Because the book was so interesting that I never even stopped to realize that it wasn't a single-volume biography. I picked it up used at a local book store and just assumed it was a one-volume bio... shame on me. But, the book was so well written that it just flowed and kept my attention. I didn't even notice I was running out of room.
When I did realize I was running out of space and needed volumes II and III, I went online and ordered the second quickly so my journey into the Nixon presidency would go on without a beat. Volumes II and III are pretty pricy by the way. I bought the second and checked out the third. I'd suggest your local library for all 3.
Of the three, I would say I liked the first the most because it talks about a Nixon that was a good guy. He handled himself with dignity under the worst of circumstances... for instance his VP trip to South America. You like Nixon in the first book. Ambrose paints a portrait of a nerdy guy that just happens to be an extremely gifted politician and is willing to play the cards necessary to make it in Washington.
I liked all 3 volumes, but by far the first of the three in the series is the best. If you want to read all 3 though... brace yourself it adds up to more than 1900 pages on what I would consider one of the most interesting people in American history.
Great job Ambrose... or at least great job to what had to have been a small army of researchers.
Great start to the three volume biography.......2004-06-17
This is the first volume of Ambrose's three volume work detailing the life of Richard Nixon. From childhood to law school to Congress to the Vice-Presidency, the author explores Nixon's character and personality as well as the influences and experiences that made Nixon the complicated and contradictory individual that he was. While the seeds of his destructive personality are clearly present, the reader is struck by the many positive qualities of Nixon.
Ambrose paints the portrait of a budding and able politician whose ultimate demise could be foreseen, but need not have happened. This lack of inevitability is explored further in the second volume.
This first volume can be found at a reasonable price. It should be noted, however, that the second and third volumes are quite rare and expensive.
The real Nixon!.......2002-03-24
It is always interesting to understand what really
motivates people. Normally it takes a good deal of
psychoanalyzing, historical background, family history etc.
But some people seem to elude even this.
Nixon is obviously one of those people, who is really
difficult to figure out. But when all is said and done he
is also a very interesting character. And after reading
Stephen Ambroses book I think we are a little closer to
the real Nixon: Saint, villain, crook, statesman etc.
His brothers Arthur and Harold died when Nixon was young.
Which made he determined to have success for three sons.
In his book "six crisis" he describes leadership as it was
part of the quaker religious experience: "In a crisis tension
builds. Breathing gets quicker and the stomach turns,
but it is through these hardships of the soul that
true leaders are found." Quake and hear the voice of God?
But besides all of this psychoanalyzing there is of course
the fascinating story of Richard M. Nixons rise and fall.
Starting with his campaign against Jerry Voorhis.
Followed by his "pink" smear campaign against Helen Douglas.
His Checkers TV-speech. The lost campaign against JFK.
His lost campaign against Pat Brown for governor
of California in 1962, which he ended by saying
"that reporters wouldn't have Nixon to kick around anymore".
His "biggest return since Lazarus" to become president
in 1968.
And then finally - Watergate.
Perhaps it was all there in his psyche when he entered
politics in the first campaign against Voorhis, just waiting
for the world to see.
A brilliant book.

A Worthwhile Examination of a World-Class City.......2002-11-16
Definitely worth more than the minimal cost of this paperback. A nice collection of stories (vignettes) of past, present, & deceased residents of this growing-in-popularity Indiana capital. A variety of subjects and topics, upbringings and backgrounds, histories; a child learning through trial and error, a young woman coming of age, a life-defining role of one's religion, the changing face of a community...positive as well as negative reflections of a city in demand - and a city that demands much of its occupants.

Sun Tzu Strategies for Winning the Marketing War: 12 Essential Principles for Winning the War for Customers
ASIN: 192919434X |
Book Description
All managers need to think strategically but few know any of the rules of strategy, except by hearsay. Working with companies such as Kraft and Nabisco, Gary Gagliardi developed this new version of Sun Tzu's strategic principles especially for managers.
Customer Reviews:
Classic but also contemporary.......2006-10-31
Others have their own reasons for praising this volume. Here are three of mine. First, I commend those involved at Clearbridge Publishing on the superior production values which are comparable with those of The Illustrated Art of War published by Oxford University Press. In all respects, the material is presented with consummate style and grace. Although I know nothing about classic Chinese, I also commend Gary Gagliardi on the clarity and fluidity of his translation of The Art of War. He skillfully juxtaposes the content of each chapter with correlations to the contemporary business world. Finally, I appreciate the provision of an "Index of Topics in The Art of War" (pages 188-189) which enables each reader to locate key concepts of greatest relevance to her or his own circumstances.
Here are several examples of the aforementioned juxtapositions, excerpted from Chapter 12. Additional correlations are provided in the chapter after this initial segment.
Sun Tzu: There are five ways of attacking with fire.
Gagliardi: There are five ways to shorten cycle time:
Sun Tzu: The first is burning troops.
Gagliardi: First, you can speed production.
Sun Tzu: The second is burning supplies.
Gagliardi: Second, you can speed supplies.
Sun Tzu: The third is burning supply transport.
Gagliardi: Third, you can speed delivery.
Sun Tzu: The fourth is burning storehouses.
Gagliardi: Fourth, you can eliminate storage.
Sun Tzu: The fifth is burning camps.
Gagliardi: Fifth, you can speed communication.
Obviously, these are not head-snapping revelations. They focus on the basic strategies and tactics of effective management. Sun Tzu formulated them; Gagliardi suggests how to apply each of them approximately 2,600 years later. As he explains, "Sun Tzu teaches strategy as a system of continuously improving your situation. Sun Tzu teaches that only a few key factors define your strategic position. Success goes not to the strongest or the most aggressive but to those who best understand their situation and what their alternatives for improving it really are. When you have mastered Sun Tzu's system of strategy, you are able to almost instantly analyze competitive situations, spot opportunities, and make the appropriate decisions."
Therefore, when committed to "continuously improving" a situation, it may be better to retreat from a battlefield or vacate a market than to attack against superior force or invest (and waste) more money where there is little, if any, chance of profitability. Gagliadi asserts that the challenge of management is effectiveness and efficiency. There must be both. In this instance, I am reminded of one of Peter Drucker's observations in an article for the Harvard Business Journal (1963): "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Sun Tzu condemns waste in all forms, including opportunities to win a battle before it is fought (hence the importance of preparation) and to launch initiatives against points of weakness (hence the importance of focus). Several who read this brief commentary may incorrectly conclude that Sun Tzu's ideas and Gagliadi's interpretation of them are obvious, perhaps even simplistic. Consider this observation by Albert Einstein: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Gagliardi acknowledges that his book is a simplification of Sun Tzu's strategic system but adds that the complete system is "sophisticated and deep." I agree.
For Sun Tzu, paradox is essential to effective military strategy: When distant, seem near and vice versa; when small, seem large and vice versa; when strong, seem weak and vice versa, etc. Gagliadi suggests that, in Sun Tzu's system, managers must master four skills: knowing (i.e. having a sense of self and of place), foreseeing (i.e. recognizing developments which suggest appropriate opportunities), moving (i.e. initiating effective action in response to such opportunities), and positioning (i.e. knowing how, when, and where to initiate such action). These are precisely the same skills all of us need to navigate our way through an often confusing world. Sun Tzu and Gary Gagliardi are among those who can guide and inform that perilous journey but only we can embark, proceed, and eventually complete it, wherever and whatever the final destination proves to be.

Taking one of the original thoeries of warfare, and applying it to modern day management is a trick in itself. This book is deep and well written, and not to be taken lightly. It is well worth the time to obtain it, then slowly meditate on the wisdom given.

Out in the open.......2000-05-12
The content of this book is very well planned out. The presentation is excelent, the writings of master Sun Tzu on one side and the writings of Gagliard on the other to direct the writings towards management is a clarifying format.
Many of my friends complain that master Sun is hard to understand on his own, so I have recommended this text to them in order to direct their studies of his work.
