There are hundreds of new books about Internet published every week. How many of them will be yet interesting after a year or less ? Really few of them. Well, this book of Kendra Bonnett has been written in 1999 (3 year ago, an eternity for the Web) and it is still very useful (and pleasant) to read, like a very good wine and like a little classic. So I trust to Kendra Bonnett and I elected this book as my small breviary on building web sites (this is my work). Of course she cites some technical solutions (mainly IBM solutions) used in 1999. But this isn't a technical guide. "An IBM Guide .." is a book about what you have always to remember when you build and manage a web site, in 1999 and now and - I suppose - in 2010 too. It is written savvy. So thanks to Kendra Bonnett. I wait for her next book.
A Good Read!.......2001-02-17
While there's certainly no shortage of hype about the Internet, there is a scarcity of clear, effective information about how companies are executing successful Web strategies. If you're confused about how to carve a niche on the Internet, or if you're overwhelmed by the complexity of the dauntingly dubbed "e-commerce initiative," An IBM Guide to Doing Business on the Internet offers a helpful starting point. With concrete examples and clear language, author Kendra R. Bonnett takes readers through a link-by-link plan for launching an effective Web site. She dutifully defines jargon and appropriately focuses on customer needs. As a result, this book won't appeal to hard-core geeks, but it does have plenty to offer readers whose Internet knowledge is at the novice or intermediate level. We at getAbstract.com recommend An IBM Guide to Doing Business on the Internet to executives who, when it comes to the Internet, just don't quite get it - but want to.
Great Introduction to Internet Businesses for Newcomers.......2000-06-10
Of the hundreds of books that will be written about how to do business on the Internet, the first question you have to ask yourself is: Who was this book written for? Clearly, this is a book for people who have almost no experience with the Internet and ebusiness. That is a niche that is not well filled out there.
If you had a one person business and wanted to start selling on-line, you could use this book to organize your efforts and become more successful. It has a good step-by-step approach that will take you where you need to go. When I was starting up on the Web four years ago with our business, this book could have saved me a lot of mistakes, lost time, and wasted money.
On the other hand, if you are already a heavy Web user and know what you like, you are beyond most of the advice in this book. At the same time, I found myself getting good ideas that I might not otherwise have gotten for my business as I read the book. That doesn't happen for me with a lot of the Internet books I read. So, you might want to skim it even if you think you are in pretty good shape.
The book's main weakness for beginners is that it states some hard-to-execute principles without a lot to help you do them. For example, you are encouraged to think out of the box (differently than you think now). This is hard for anyone to do, and there isn't a lot of support for how to do that.
There is only one reference to IBM's services in the book, and that is handled in an even-handed and low-key way. You are told to get some help in this area, and IBM is mentioned as one possible source. I thought this was well handled.

No hype! Real world examples of businesses making $$$!.......2000-05-02
At last! Someone has written a book about how to really create a presence on the internet and actually make money (i.e. other than going public). Now that the dust (and hype) has settled a bit around e-commerce, the author has unearthed several businesses that are actually doing it right. If you're looking for a guide book to get your business up and running on the net, this is it! No B.S.--practical advice and real world examples. Even if you're business is on the net, get this book anyway--its full of great tips. Well written, too!

This book was not exactly what I had expected from the title. It is a small book, but highly detailed and informative. Thinking Outside the Cubicle is easy to read, yet not simplistic. For me, the book provided a framework to look at all the facets of the job I now have through questions at the end of each chapter. I got many, many ideas on how I could improve my job. The author brought up a lot of issues that I hadn't even thought of. I would recommend this book highly for anyone who is considering leaving their job or anyone who wants to enhance their job or career.

Almost as fast as "fast food" but with wonderful results.......2001-03-01
I like this cookbook so much that I bought a dozen of them to give as gifts to best friends and family. The recipes meet two major needs. First, when I'm exhausted and hungry and want real food, these soups can be made in 30 minutes with a minimum of fuss. Second, the results are amazingly complex in flavor. There is something restorative about the combination of little effort and great results. Don't mess with the recipes the first time around. You'll be surprised how good they are. Some of the ingredients will not be regular inhabitants of your larder, so pick out a few soups you want to try every week and buy the ingredients to have on hand. Because of the short cooking time, the recipes call for fresh herbs added last thing, but if you don't have any just add dried herbs with the liquid ingredients and you will get good results.
A very fresh approach to soup-making.......2000-02-15
My wife often buys me cookbooks that I wouldn't think of, with mixed results. THIS one became an instant favourite. Gorgeous fonts and use of color; perfect layout - mostly a photo on one page (for us visual-oriented males ;-), and the complete recipe on the facing page. Most important: very tasty, visually-appealing, and quick recipes.
There is nothing in the book that isn't a photograph or recipe, yet I still think of it more as a COOKBOOK than a recipe book -- after you've made a few of the soups, you'll find yourself absorbing and adopting the common philosophy behind all these recipes. Even the photographs suggest new ways of making and serving soup.
I hardly need the actual book any more -- I just head off to the produce section and grab whatever is freshest and most appealing.
Favourite recipes? Out of the 60-odd here, I haven't found a dud yet.
Great, quick soups that taste complex.......2000-01-23
The books in this series are wonderful. The crab chowder, Middle Eastern sausage and bean stew and curried mushroom tortolloni soup are tasty and satisfying without having to stand at the stove a long time, so you don't have to wait till a day off to make them. Tip: the first time you make them, the recipes will take just a few minutes longer than the book says.

This is the best value for having global figures handy, and is one tenth the cost of the other great reference work, the Fitzroy Dearborn Book of World Rankings. Perhaps even more to the point, this book has something the other one does not: country by country data (although one could always go to the CIA World Factbook online for similar data as well as biographic listings). Having said that, it does not have the full range of detail that is offered by the other, such as domestic water shortages and energy consumption. This book has Internet and music charts--but none of the charts are comprehensive, generally listing top and bottom countries, not all countries. Bottom line: this is the best value for a portable book about global figures relevant to political economy.

Terry Sanford (1917–1998) was one of the most important public figures of the postwar South. First as North Carolina’s governor and later as president of Duke University, he demonstrated a dynamic style of progressive leadership marked by compassion and creativity. This book tells the story of Sanford’s beginnings, his political aspirations, his experiences in office, and, of course, his numerous accomplishments in the context of a period of revolutionary change in the South.
After defeating a segregationist campaign in 1960 to win the governorship, Sanford used his years in office to boost public education and advance race relations. A decade later, at the height of tumult on American campuses, Sanford assumed the presidency of Duke University and led it to its position as one of the top universities in the nation. During his more than fifty years as a public servant he was associated with presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter. Sanford was a presidential candidate himself in 1972 and 1976, and he won election to the United States Senate in 1986 where his international commission produced an economic recovery plan for Central America. As one of the last New Deal Democrats in the Senate, he remained passionate about the opportunity for leaders to use government to improve people’s lives.
Terry Sandord draws on Sanford’s considerable private and public archive as well as on the recollections of Sanford himself and his family, colleagues, and friends. This biography offers a unique perspective on North Carolina life, politics, political personalities, and the shifting public allegiances of the second half of the twentieth century that transformed life both in North Carolina and throughout the American South.

Well Written.......2007-05-04
Outrageous Ambition" by Howard E. Covington, Jr., and Marion A. Ellis is the biography of Terry Sanford. Sanford was a North Carolina politician, child of the depression, President of Duke University, Governor, Senator and failed Presidential Candidate. The book chronicles his life and times. It assesses the impact he had on the state and visa versa.
This book is excellent.
The writers have a readable and exciting style of prose. The narrative moves along well.
The book is not simply a story about Sanford's life, though that is covered in good order. It is a history of the politics of North Carolina from the 1930's to the early 1990's. It would be of benefit to students and teachers, and any reader who wanted to more about this era in state politics. The account of desegregation is especially well written.
As for the biographical nature of the book, it is clear that the authors liked their subject, and made no attempt to hide that fact. This is a clearly stated account of Sanford's life from two admirers. Though the book is not free of some criticisms, the writers measure Sanford's life and find the good outweighed the bad. Their case is strong.
Tarheel Required Reading.......2002-06-18
Every Tarheel, or any non-Tarheel who has an interest in one of the most important political figures in the South, Terry Sanford, should read this book. Senator in the NC General Assembly, Governor, President of Duke University, and US Senator, this book covers it all. It provides an interesting look at Southern politics, and how our past still effects us to this day. There should be a "Six Degrees of Terry Sanford" game, as he can be linked to practically anybody in the field of NC or National politics. Kerr Scott, Lauch Faircloth, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, The George Bushes, Al Gore, Jesse Helms, Jesse Jackson, Richard Nixon, Elizabeth Dole & Erskine Bowles (both front runners from their respective parties in the 2002 Senate race) and the list goes on. Terry Sanford witnessed great movements in history. The race issue in the South, a political atmospheric change, the wheeling and dealing of politicians. Throughout he kept his values and goals, which helped him become a symbol of Progressive policies, and helped place Duke University into national prominence. This should be required reading!
Must reading for Tar Heels and politics buffs.......2000-01-08
Anyone who lives in North Carolina will learn much about the state's recent political history in this book. And anyone who is interested in progressive politics should read it too. Terry Sanford's forward-thinking approach to government is an inspiration, particularly in the areas of race and education.
Well-researched, insightful, and inspiring........1999-10-08
Former North Carolina Governor and United States Senator Terry Sanford is one of this century's outstanding political leaders. While serving as Governor in the early sixties, Sanford became known nationwide for his commitment to improving education in North Carolina.
Covington and Ellis' biography of Sanford offers a great deal of insight into Sanford's formative years and his political career. The authors researched their subject thoroughly, and the reader gains a great deal of insight into North Carolina politics and into the historical forces shaping the country.
Many of Sanford's colleagues, family, and friends were interviewed for this book, and their stories and perspectives add depth to this book. Many of the characters in the book are still active in North Carolina politics, including "Jimmy Hunt" (as he is referred to in the book) who now serves as Governor of North Carolina.
People who still believe that our government can be a force for good, and that a political life can be synonomous with a life of public service, will be inspired by this book and by the life of this outstanding public servant.

Racism was not supposed to be part of a white boy's life growing up in Michigan in the 1950's and early 1960's. Slavery was in the past, and segregation was supposedly in the South. Moving to Cincinnati with his family in 1961, the author found himself on an integrated football team which was challenged to go through its season undefeated and unscored upon. He found himself straddling two social worlds separated by race and was witness to a love triangle which threatened to penetrate the barrier between black males and white females. Carla, a young Jewish girl, was infatuated with Terry, a roguish white boy who would certainly corrupt her. His competition was an incorruptible young man named Michael, but Michael was black. This is a story about a team trying to protect its end zone from violation, about a young black man trying to rescue a white girl from violation, and about a group of young people violating the segregationist rules that existed in the North.

It's Not Really About Football..........2004-11-10
I loved this book about an undefeated, unscored upon high school football team in 1960s Cincinnati, an apt locale between North and South as an integrated team deals with matters of race just as the Nation begins to do so. Mr. Penn shows remarkable skill in capturing a watershed era as he recounts the "perfect" season through human relationships both bitter and sweet. Although football is at the center of the story, all football terms are explained and it is in fact the story of black and white teens, including an interracial love triangle. Let's hope there's more Taylor Penn in our reading future.
