A great companion to Pocket Ref.......2000-12-10
For the past year, I've kept a copy of Pocket Ref in my desk drawer at work. I refer to it at least once a week, and I've given two copies as gifts to co-workers who kept borrowing my copy. When I learned that a law-enforcement version was available, I searched high and low trying to find a copy. I should have come to Amazon.com first... Pocket Partner is a teriffic resource for anyone needing a concise guide to investigation, contacts in law enforcement, or HazMat information. Everyone who works in the field should have a copy handy. While it might not offer the depth of information on a particular topic that other books do, the Pocket Partner in your glovebox when you need it is still much better than the tome sitting on a shelf back at your office.

Finding An Unusual Suspect.......2004-10-28
Mildreth Faulkner owns a small flower shop. Her competitor, Harry Peavis, bought up a few shares in her small corporation. Now he wants to buy up control. Mildreth calls Perry Mason's office for an appointment, then visits her invalid sister Carlotta and her husband Bob. Chapter 2 explains how this nightclub with a PRIVATE door runs a racket. The witness, Esther Dilmeyer, is poisoned by candy but is found in time. Mildreth suspects Bob has given up Carlotta's shares in the corporation. There is another roller-coaster ride of a story where events pop-up as a surprise twist. Complications arise from page to page, chapter to chapter, yet the storyline stays simple to follow.
In Chapter 5 Mason visits the nightclub owner's cabin, only to find the police and newspaper reporters covering his murder. Lynk was dead quite a while (the coagulation of blood and rigor mortis). Now the question is who did it from the list of suspects, or an as yet unknown person. Chapter 6 tells how a suspect could refuse to answer questions based on constitutional rights. Lieutenant Tragg plays with Mildreth like a cat with a mouse, and gets her admission (Mason represents her sister Carlotta). Mason points out that husbands and wives are more likely to kill each other than a stranger (Chapter 9). Chapter 13 explains why a claimant in a court of equity must have clean hands; illegal means, entrapment, fraud, or oppression disqualify a suit. Mason learns of facts that lead to the questioning of a witness, and the truth comes out to free his client. Mildreth recovers the missing stock and keeps her business. This all takes place in two fast-paced days. One item dates this novel: a woman wearing "light woolen stockings" (Chapter 3).

After being involved in IT for over 20 years, I found this book to be a revelation. As with most IT professionals who work their way up from IT implementation and support to IT and then corporate management, I was very well versed on technologies from telecommunications to data networking. However, I was increasingly frustrated with "technology" decisions made by other "C-Level" staff with what I considered basic flaws - from a technology perspective - that practically doomed them to failure from the start.
Intuitively, I knew that the problem was their understanding of business processes, but a lack of knowledge about technology. As they had no inclination, or time, to learn the technology sufficiently to avoid the pitfalls, it was necessary for me to determine how to more successfully align technology needs with the corporate politics (as the operational alignment had already occurred). This book, which is very readable and even provided some belly-laughs about some of my most serious problems, really focused some ideas of which I was previously only vaguely aware.
I highly recommend this book to all IT managers. It provides valuable information in an enjoyable and thought-provoking way. Besides, how many technical manuals can you read without needing some kind of variety?

Wow, after 20 years in the hardest game in the woorld (I.T.) (not without some success), I always felt that I knew the answers and the others didn't understand. I could never figure out why nobody valued what I did as highly as I did.
Now I know, this book tells it all and you can read it in a day or two.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone in IT who feels misunderstood and undervalued. Use this book to get promoted within a year.

This book is a collection of essays written by Linda Ligon, from the pages of Handwoven magazine. The aren't technical "how to" essays, but stories written from the author's experiences.
It is a very enjoyable and sometimes very humorous read for either spinner or weaver (or both!), capturing the love and enjoyment we all have for these wonderful crafts.

It had recently been acquired from the Sioux Indians by the Federal Government, and was ripe for the taking by persons willing to abide by the rules of claim, which required living on the land for eight months. Eight months in South Dakota, in the dead of winter, in a wooden box called a house, about eight feet by ten feet in size. The only insulation was torn tar paper on the outside of a house which had no stove. When the snow didn't come through the cracks, the blowing sand did. Frozen water had to be melted for drinking, and there was no well on the land.
This is the story of how they lived, endured, and survived, during their time on the land they claimed. Living through almost the same hardships of the Pioneers from 100 years earlier, they were miles from any neighbors, were terrified of the Indians, and for a while, had no horse. And no income.
As I laid in my comfy, warm bed, reading this book a few years ago, I continually felt guilty, for my part, for what they endured to achieve what they wanted. We take so much for granted today, in our country, and never give pause to what those before us went through, suffered through, and the prices they paid. This is a fascinating look into a short period in the lives of these two sisters, and a reminder, that few things of value in life are easily obtained.
