Emanuel Carpenter's book, "A Job Ain't Nothing But Work is a light-hearted and inspired stroke of genuis that takes a look at the convoluted rigmarole of trying to climb the corporate ladder without really trying. The book is a must for corporate stuffed shirts who take themselves too seriously. It is almost a therapuetic bandaid to all of one's problems. I know - I almost popped a rib laughing at the comic timing of all the situations presented in Emanuel Carpenter's humorous take on all aspects of getting a job, keeping a job and adjusting to the mind-numbing parade of characters and psychos that one spends the better part of their days with, called co-workers and bosses. Emmanuel Capenter displayed his comic good timing and his writing dextrity by executing a perfect foil for stress- "A Job Ain't Nothing But Work."

A Terrific Lighter Side of Work.......2004-11-03

"A Job Ain't Nothing But Work," is the written, laughing national anthem for work. The author, Emanuel Carpenter, does a great job of poking fun at the real side of working in the New Millenium. His take on humor will have you cracking up. As a retired military man, who is looking for a job, it was great relief and I could definitely identify with the various circumstances and situations presented in this book. The author is on the money about the perils of working: from explaining the desire or lack of desire to get off your butt and look for a job to dealing with the dynamic personalities and situations within the job place. His transitions are smooth, timely and very laughable. Trust me, you will be able to identify with the author's views and he will leave you with a smile on your face.

A Black Man's "Office Space".......2004-09-23

This is the kind of book that could be made into an ethnic man's cinematic version of the cult classic, "Office Space". Emanuel Carpenter is a black man offering his candid perspective on the occupational hazards of, well occupations. The book is a series of frank insights wrapped in a cloak of humor. His experiences with a lifetime of seeking and gaining employment have provided him with valuable information he passes on to the next generation. He takes the grandiose ego of managers and supervisors down a peg or two; to him they are elevated employees who believe themselves to be way more important than they are. Tales of bizarre interviews and the interviewers who conducted them are recalled as a series of off the wall methods of finding the "right" person for the job. His tales of co-workers and their world do not focus much on race, but on the sheer weirdness of human nature in the corporate world. I found the constant trademark symbols () whenever he mentioned cars, fast food brands, office machines, and the like a bit distracting. Mr. Carpenter could have done it on purpose, in which case it added to the insanity of our label-intensive world. I would recommend this book especially for high school and college students about to embark on the corporate world.

Perfect Timing.......2004-09-17

During a time when unemployment is high and morale is low, Emanuel Carpenter's new book is quite apropos. He covers those moments most office workers have dreaded with both a keen eye and great humor-- the bathroom, office gatherings, and arriving to work late. While much of his advice is to be taken tongue-in-cheek, the main suggetion we should all keep in mind, whether looking for work or looking to get out of it, is that a job ain't nothing but work.

THREE GUT BUSTING LAUGHS ON EVERY PAGE.......2004-01-06

I enjoyed this book so much. Anyone who works in the corporate world will break out into side splitting laughter while reading this testimony of office "politricks". Not only is this book well written, insightful, and clever, it also manages to slip in more than a few tips on how to survive the job market jungle.

Note: Chapter 2 is beyond funny!!!

You'd be better off buying a "classic" Louisiana cookbook and using your own judgement to lighten recipes. The book is set up with a regular recipe on the left hand page and a "healthier" version on the right hand page. In most cases the difference consists of obvious substitutions - such as lean ham in place of bacon - and simple reductions in the amount of oil or butter used. I would have given it a 1 if it weren't for the pictures and stories.

I'm not from Louisiana originally. I've had the opportunity to browse through Cajun cookbooks while living here. This particular book, "Something Old, Something New", is quite interesting. It has a combination of great recipes-ones for those who like to use the "good old stuff" and ones for those who like to use lighter low-fat replacements. It has great stories and photgraphs of people and food. It definitely is not your typical cookbook. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have this year. Bon appetite.

This book covers the basics you need to know before using a shaper. A shaper is a very dangerous and scary tool to use at first, so you should be prepared.

Own a shaper?...get this book........2004-03-28

Good book. Shapers appear to be simple and self-evident...a spindle sticking up through a table, bolt on a cutter, set the fence and pass some stock. Eric's book will have you understanding your shaper like you didn't think possible. I have Lonnie's book as well, and I like them both. Eric presents more detail, but Lonnie covers some topics not in this book (and vice versa). I suggest them both...it's not a huge expense.

There must be a better shaper book........1999-09-08

This is a book that is dryly technical and contains few helpful hints for hands-on woodworkers. Line drawings and black and white photos are in some cases difficult to understand. And as is typical with many British woodworking books it will be hard for Americans to follow. Spelching (tear out) and pressures (hold downs) are two of the terms that have to be determined from the context. It seems more suitable for a vocational school handbook than an introduction to the shaper for the here-and-now woodworker.

Pearce's biography of A.I. Solzhenitsyn may leave off the man's rougher edges, but manages to bring to the fore the centrality of Solzhenitsyn's religious convictions. This seems to be Pearce's forte and his mission in life. In today's cultural wasteland, when nearly no one looks past their momentary needs, it is very much needed. Very edifying.

A fascinating biography of one of Russia's greatest writers.......2003-09-12

Solzhenitsyn: A Soul in Exile is a fascinating look at one of the most unusual and influential writers of the late 20th Century. Marvellously written, it treks through his tumultuous life from start to finish, focusing on the interchange between Solzhenitsyn's faith and his writing and how the lifelong shaping of his beliefs is reflected in his stories and poems. Engaging from start to finish, this biography also contains 10 previously unpublished poems and a collection of 24 photographs from various periods of his life.

This book meets a real need.......2002-01-02

There are lengthy biographies of Solzhenitsyn by Scammell and Thomas, and specialized studies (e.g. Ericson's). Pearce's book meets the need of public and undergraduate libraries for a very readable, concise, and up-to-date biography of this controversial Nobel Prize winner. Pearce's book includes some otherwise unavailable recent material by Solzhenitsyn -- the prose poems at the end of the book -- so graduate libraries ought to have it, also.

Individuals who have read Solzhenitsyn's own autobiographical works and open letters might not need this book, but for most readers it will be a good introduction. It has the salutary effect of prompting one to go and (re)read works such as The First Circle. Pearce doesn't go into depth in discussion of Solzhenitsyn's books, but says enough to quicken interest in them.

Pearce shows affinity between Solzhenitsyn's positive ideas and those of people such as E. F. Schumacher (Small Is Beautiful). The critique of Enlightenment progressivism and positivism isn't detailed, but there's enough to remind me of writers as otherwise diverse as Phillip Sherrard (The Eclipse of Man and Nature), Russell Kirk, and the author of Ideas Have Consequences. I was also reminded a little of C. S. Lewis's prophetic novel That Hideous Strength, where Lewis presents a distinction between Britain and Logres, as I read Solzhenitsyn as quoted by Pearce, on the souls of nations. Familiarity with these writers -- who are often not known, or well known, to persons who presume to speak of their ideas -- can help one to understand where Solzhenitsyn is coming from.

Uncritical, flattering bio of a complex, uncompromising man.......2001-08-26

Alenandr Solzenitsyn is a man certainly worthy of full scale treatment by a biographer. DM Thomas' biography a couple of years ago was strangely unmoving,and barely mentioned Solzenitsyn's religious views, which are at the core of his beliefs. At one time.AI solzenitsyn was the darling of the right in America,a virulent anti-communist who scorned ANYTHING resembling a welfare state{his attacks on free-market capitalism was soft pedalded by these same people}.Slowly, though, he became more and more removed from the centre of attention, and his novels became more and more obscure{and ,truth be told,rambling and quite boring.The red wheel trilogy...}This Biography places solzenitsyn's religious beliefs front and centre and the core of his being{and the reason he was able to survive the hell of the gulag}. While these are quite interesting, and really have rarely been covered in the West, Solzenitsyn's disdain for the West, his dismissal of pope John Paul II during and audience,his Tsarist tendencies and his almost messianic xenonphobia are not touched{though all are of one piece.] Solzenitsyn in many ways reminds me of Gandhi{without the charm}: wanting Holy Mother Russia to rise again to her greatness without the taint of western Decadence through a spiritual revolution. While he is a moral giant and an extraordiany example of the resilience of the human spirit, he is not served well by fawning, uncritical praise. Alexandr I solzhenitsyn deserves a full ,massive critical biography covering all of his life{his return to Russia has been bittersweet,his tv show was canceled for LACK OF INTEREST.Amazing how short peoples memories are!} This is one small step in the process.
