Not what I expected........2007-01-10

This book was full of off-the-wall recipes. Being a Betty Crocker cookbook and advertised as the Complete Thanksgiving Cookbook, I figured the recipes would be more traditional. I was disappointed.

A good book for using for cooking your first thanksgiving.......2006-09-22

Lots of good recipes especially for someone attempting to fix their first thanksgiving meal. Most are easy to make, lots of both traditional and updated holiday recipes. The instructions are easy to follow. Not so many recipes to choose from but makes it easier to plan a meal.

An On Target Cookbook!.......2004-11-17

The trouble with a lot of Thanksgiving cookbooks is that they throw so many new and quite exotic dishes at the reader. I think most people still prefer their Thanksgiving with all of the traditional dishes.

Betty Crocker's book does just that while still giving you some new things to try, without making them too intimidating for the novice cook. Add to that the best sections of the book may be the sections on planning your dinner from shopping to all the make-aheads to getting the turkey ready for the oven.

You'll find all of the great traditional fare in this book with straight forward and easy to follow recipes no matter what the size of your gathering.

If your a traditionalist like me, then this is the book for you.

new book with NO ACCESS CODE.......2007-02-24

I ordered this book because it was cheaper then on other sites. I bought it new for the purpose of not having to buy an additional access code for my online class. Since when bought new the access code to WebCT should come in the new book. I received the book with no CD. So after all that, I still had to pay an additional fee for a code when it should have came with the book. A very big hassle. I called customer service and all they said they could do was send me another book if I returned the book I had purchased to them. That would be an 8 week turn around, and by that time I would have been half way through my class. So instead I had to purchases the code on my own. I will not buy books from Amazon again. There are other text book web sites that understand the demands of buying books for schools.

Econ Text book.......2007-02-09

I found the text to be well written. Mr. Tucker is very thorough and yet concise in his layout of the chapters and it is very easy to read. The charts and graphs really illustrate what is being discussed and each section has a review section to reinforce what you have just read.

This book helped me to get an A in Microeconomics since my professor didn't have a formal textbook just a Power Point presentation that I couldn't refer to when I needed it. The book is not only great but they have a website to take quizzes or review the material. I recommend it!

A compassionate picture of a misunderstood First Lady.......2000-05-29

David Collins has presented an enigmatic character in a compassionate and lively manner. Mrs. Lincoln's instability is legendary, but when examined in a modern context it becomes more understandable -- even bogus! Given all the tragedies in her life, plus the possibility of medical problems (it is reported that both she and President Lincoln were plagued with migraines) it is amazing that she fared as well as she did. Collins starts with her insanity trial then journeys back to lay the stage for her son's action. Even though some might question the loyalty of a son who was declaring his mother insane, Collins manages to present him also in a sympathetic manner. This is a very engaging book that both I and my nine-year-old son enjoyed. With its handy index, it would also be a good volume for students preparing research projects.

Life aboard eight Greatlakes Steamboats in the 1960's.......2005-05-23

I bought this book expecting it to be mostly about the eight steamboats but found it to be several stories in one.

The typical Great Lakes book focuses on the boats (ships if they were on saltwater) or things like storms on the lakes etc. This book focuses on the crew, their personalities, eccentricities, their labor (working in the kitchen on a tour boat, painting, scraping, hosing off the decks of freighters, loading and unloading), their idle time on and off the boat (drinking, exploring the ports, trying to find girls) and to a large part the author's life, feelings and struggles. This is not to say that there are not any descriptions of the boats. However the emphasis is on where the crew works and lives (the bunk rooms, engine rooms and galleys as opposed to what you see when a ship passes by).

The author tells his story of a bright kid from a blue-collar family working on the boats to pay his way thorough Monteith College (part of Wayne State). He relates the background of Motown music, the Bob-Lo Island amusement park, the Detroit riots and the draft. On shore we hear about his friends that have been sent to Viet Nam, others in college trying to avoid being sent there.

In spite of the subtitle on the front cover--Sailing Though the Sixties-I thought that this was going to be mostly about sailing on the great lakes. At first I found the discussion of the draft, Viet Nam, such as the authors coming of age etc to be an intrusion on the usual sailing book, but later felt that this was a very good story in itself.

This is the author's first book. It is a very well told and personal story. I would recommend it to those who are interested in Great Lakes shipping and particularly those interested in how it feels to be working on a ship. He gives a very good account of what it was like to be coming of age in the 1960's. Each chapter makes you want to read the next. Its approximately 300 pages went by quickly

A Memoir about coming of age in the 60's.......2005-02-22

This book reads as a memoir. Anyone who came of age during the sixties, relates to the uncertainty of that period or would like to learn more will enjoy this adventure.
The author pulls you into his volatile world, as the youngest child in a family of eight he is as confused and free as the time he is growing up in. He seeks to escape the political and economic turmoil in Detroit, Michigan and hops aboard a freighter.
He chronicles the adventures he has both on-shore and off-shore and in the end it is the odd characters he meets along the way that steer him back to shore to grow up like a normal young man.
Livingston's book is filled with the naivety of a young person trying to find their way. In the end you will be happy that he does.
