        Book Description

Wherever we are in the quality movement, there is more to discover--to explore. Today, quality serves business as a way of increasing profits. That is one end of a spectrum. Tomorrow, quality takes business into the rest of the spectrum. In this new dimension, business learns to serve, and be served, from a foundation of unconditional love. At the other end of the spectrum is quality's far-reaching goal--the attainment of harmony between people and the entire cosmos. This goal reveals the gap, and steps, between it and what we do today.

This book is intended for explorers and pioneers. It is not for those who are comfortable in today's paradigms. It is for those who search and yearn for new ways bring heart into the world of business and society. It is not for those who are comfortable living an unexamined and changeless life. It is for those who sense a thrill in the heart with the changes of each new day.

Experience, not dry learning, is the heart of this book. For this reason, "Practical Exercises" are included in most of the chapters. They are experiences of things that can be known, but not told or taught. Without the exercises, your knowing will be superficial. With them, you can enter into dimensions unknown to you today.

Michael W. Munn, Ph.D., heads the Gaia Center for Quality in Palo Alto, California. He provides keynotes, experiential change seminars, and business quality workshops. Strategic planning, executive development, proposal, and reengineering efforts are among the topics of his workshops.

        · Goes beyond quality in the workplace
        · An operator's manual to reaching higher levels of understanding
        · Tested, practical exercises for reader interaction

4 out of 5 stars A Book Beyond the Usual.......2006-08-16

I agree with the review by Michael Stetwart.

If you think quality is only important for the product your company produces and the issue stops there, this book will be a refreshing and inspiring guide.

5 out of 5 stars Quality for the Cosmos?.......2000-04-26

At the end of last year, having finished another semester of teaching, I dreamt of finding a book that would provide some of the answers to the big questions of management. A week later I found it - Beyond Business as Usual - and immediately recognized the value of its ideas. Michael W. Munn, in this short text, delivers on his promise to provide Practical Lessons in Accessing New Dimensions.

Munn's credentials as a physicist and quality consultant underpin his use of stories and mind exercises in a book that might otherwise be dismissed as yet another idealistic New Ager seeking to influence Global Harmony. The book begins gently enough by musing what lies 'Over the Rainbow' and then uses a Navajo story to engage the unwitting reader in his quality journey that proposes a way forward, and a reason for (more) change.

The book argues the simple and radical proposition that the role of business is to create harmony in the cosmos. This seems a long way from the more commonly accepted wisdom that business is simply about making profit. However his book will resonate with those who recognize the value of creativity and intuition as tools of the future, enabling organizations to deliver the innovations demanded by an increasingly critical consumer.

While the book will be far too radical for many readers, his model of quality is a valuable tool for anyone working to improve quality in their organisation. As a consultant I have watched individuals and their organizations slowly awaken to the value of quality in its various forms. At first they have to be convinced of its relevance to them and once converted they sell the message throughout their organisation. However the commitment of individuals will then peak, at which point they become cynical of others who are more committed to the Quality Movement (through involvement in Quality Awards) judging them to be 'caught up in the self-perpetuating Quality Industry'. When faced with this resistance I recognised the need for a simple model to articulate the stages of development in the Quality Journey.

Munn presents a model that conceptualizes 7 levels of the Quality Movement and provides a tool for identifying the level achieved by individuals and their organizations. He proposes that each level has the aim of creating harmony in the universe, although the focus at each successive stage develops from an inward to an external orientation. The first three levels in his model are familiar to most - Quality Control of existing products and processes, Total Quality Control to improve products and processes, and Relational Quality which aims to achieve harmony amongst all stakeholders. He sees these as developmental steps based in the personal and corporate self-interest of our time, where organizations serve to profit.

The natural progression in the model describes 4 stages that require organizations, and the people within them, to undergo a shift of motivation where purpose beyond self becomes the driving force. This is the point at which I imagine Munn loses many of his readers who are not ready for such a radical message. However those who are spiritually or ecologically minded, or have a slight hangover from the 60's, will recognize the stages of Total Human Quality (Love for Others), Total Bioquality (Love for All Life), Total Planetary Quality (Love of the Planet) and Total Cosmic Quality (Love for the All). In these stages, organizations profit in order to serve.

This is a good book. It will change the way you think about your organisation and leave you with the problem of what to do next. While Munn includes a number of techniques for working with your organization, his advice is that beyond levels 1, 2 and 3, you must listen to, and follow, your intuition. Good Luck.

            Book Description

This book is the outgrowth of 5 years consulting experience in the applications of statistical methods to Surface Mount Technology (SMT). This book provides the reader with the methodology of applying Statistical Process Control (SPC) on the manufacturing line. This methodology is called data sleuthing. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides an overview of the methods of data sleuthing. Part II provides a case study approach to the implementation of SPC throughout the whole SMT manufacturing line. It starts with how to qualify the raw material from the supplier to the implementation of SPC for final test of the printed circuit board. In Part I, we discuss in detail the tools and methods of data sleuthing. Chapter 1 presents the concept of data sleuthing. Data sleuthing is the practice of employing statistical methods and strategies to detect, identify, and eliminate "excessive variation" in SMT. Data sleuthing has three components: statistical tools, strategies for implementation, and the axioms of deductive reasoning and logic. It is the synergistic relationship of the three that allows us to solve cases of excessive variation. In chapters 2 through 6, we provide the reader with the basic tools to summarize the data, employ control charts on-line, conduct process capability studies, and design experiments to obtain process knowledge about what input variables in the process affect the process output variable(s) in question. We also provide ways to optimize the process through the application of response surface methodology. We show ways to develop relationships between process characteristics through regression analysis. In Part II of the book, the casebook of data sleuthing, we provide the reader with 11 cases on how to implement data sleuthing in practice. One of the key components of solving each of these cases is the axioms of data sleuthing. These axioms are quotations on deductive reasoning and logic from Sherlock Holmes. The names of the case studies are based on actual story names from Sherlock Holmes to reflect the importance of these axioms in practice. At the start of each case study is listed the tools, strategies, and axioms applied to solve the case. Data Sleuthing is the practice of employing statistical methods and strategies to detect, identify, and eliminate "excessive variation" in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) processes. In this definition there are two key concepts which are delineated in this monograph: (1) Statistical Methods, and (2) Excessive Variation. Data Sleuthing is based on the principles of deductive reasoning and logic. The most famous practitioner of these principles is the legendary fictional detective, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1986) .We take the approach of Mr. Sherlock Holmes in this treatise by developing a case study approach to solve situations where excessive variation is encountered. This is accomplished through the use of tools and methods that reflect deductive reasoning and logic. This book is divided in two parts. Part I provides the reader with an overview of the tools necessary to employ in practice to solve Cases of Excessive Variation. Part II of the book provides 11 case studies which gives the reader practical examples of how to employ these tools in real-life situations to solve cases of excessive variation throughout the SMT process. The axioms of Data Sleuthing are employed to remind the practitioner that the basis of solving the case of excessive variation is deductive reasoning and logic. The scientific approach to studying variation indicates that there are two classifications for process variation namely common (sometimes called random) and special (sometimes called assignable) causes of variation. Before providing an example from an SMT process, we ask the reader to conduct a simple exercise. Write your name three times. Next write your name with the opposite hand. Examination of the signatures from writing it three times with your usually signature hand shows that slight differences can occur. These are examples of common cause of variation . The differences between the two hands reflect assignable causes of variation. It is helpful to demonstrate the difference between the two with an example taken from a component placement process. In this operation the process engineer has identified the following four sources of variation: (1) Feeders, (2) Heads, (3) Nozzles, and (4) Component Placement Machine. Example 1.1 gives the details. EXAMPLE 1.1 In this example, the component placement process is specified to produce no more than 50 parts per million (PPM) defect level . In this operation, the process engineer has identified the following four sources of variation: (1) Feeders, (2) Heads, (3) Nozzles, and (4) Component placement machine itself. Table 1-4 gives the breakdown of what causes of variation is attributed to each type. The process engineer chooses to attribute the feeder, nozzle, and head sources of variation to special causes of variation. The reason is that in each case, the failure was easily identifiable, were easy to eliminate by referring to the machine maintenance manual, and they were fixed by the maintenance organization. The reason that the component placement machine was attributed to common cause was due to the fact it was already performing to its theoretical capabilities. The team could not perform any corrective action to make it perform more efficiently. The only way for this operation of component placement equipment to perform more efficiently is to replace the existing equipment with new equipment that is capable of performing at a theoretical defect level of 50 PPM or better instead of at the current machines capability of 100 PPM. As stated earlier in Table 1-2, it is the responsibility of management to make this type of decision. The reason for this is, it is a capital expenditure, which is the responsibility of management to make. This is at the crux of the problem when trying to implement SPC in practice. After the "low hanging fruit" is harvested from the program, experts estimate that 85-94% of problems is the responsibility of management to fix! We address this situation in more detail in Part II in Case Study Number 11- The Final Problem. Table 1-4: Causes of Variation Attribtued to Placement Equipment

Sources of Variation: Reason for Failure: Type of Cause Feeder:

Wrong Part Number: Special Nozzle: Can't Hold Part: Special Head: Doesn't Move to Pick-Up Part: Special Machine: Failure Rate of 100 PPM at Machine Theortical Design Guideline: Common

5 out of 5 stars Practical hands on book.......2006-06-13

This book is unlike many how to business books out there. It actually gives you the steps to implement it. Whether or not the earth is warming, it makes sense for everyone to do their part to show their respect to our home. Buy the book. Save the earth.

5 out of 5 stars Simple "How-To" Approach to a Leaner, Greener Organization.......2006-04-18

"Lean and Green" takes an enjoyable, practical, action-oriented approach to environmental change. It presents a step-by-step strategy that assures everyone that they can take positive steps within their organization by inspiring leadership that doing the right thing for the planet is also doing the right thing for the company's bottom-line. Pam removes many of the personal barriers we all face as we attempt to align our internal values with our external actions.
Most importantly - IT IS AN ENJOYABLE READ!!

5 out of 5 stars Over a hundred examples from major companies from Intel to Polaroid discuss various commitments.......2006-01-06

Quite often the idea of profit and environmental health work against each other; but if 20 leading organizations as outlined in Pamela J. Gordon's Lean And Green: Profit For Your Workplace And The Environment can succeed at both, any business can. Lean And Green shows how these companies succeeded by adopting solid environmental principles which worked economically as well. Over a hundred examples from major companies from Intel to Polaroid discuss various commitments, from recycling and environmental management systems to involving top management on down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Practical. Hopeful........2004-11-16

"Lean and Green" is a must-read for anyone involved in business and/or sustainability. Personally, I've been involved in both. I've hosted my own radio show that included "lean and green" types of subjects. And I'm impressed by what Pam Gordon has done. Rather than being theoretical or abstract, she's drawn upon her corporate experience and expertise. She's provided a ton of real-world, lean-and-green business examples from IBM, Celestica, NEC, Apple, Horizon and many other companies. She's also provided a framework for people in business who want to introduce lean-and-green activities within their own companies. And, perhaps most importantly of all, she has chronicled some key indicators of a little-recognized trend these days: the shift towards a world of manufacturing that uses far less materials and energy and produces far less waste. "Lean and Green" is easy-to-read and hopeful. I don't recommend books very much. I recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Useful at the level to which it is pitched.......2003-02-25

The core theme is that, if you reduce waste and increase recycling, it will be good for the environment and for profits. The theme is supported with a wealth of examples. This is a book for those who are 'putting a toe in the water' rather than for those who wish to move beyond the first steps, but is useful at the level to which it is pitched. It helps to contest the pernicious myth that business profitability and environmental responsibility are at odds with each other.
