        Book Description

Insights from the business titans of the industrial age.

At the turn of the last century, the men who dared to think big changed the business landscape forever--and grew fabulously wealthy in the process. Today, as the forces of technological and social change are giving rise to a new breed of business pioneer, the insights of the first industrialists have never been more relevant or compelling. In this unique book, noted business historians George David Smith and Frederick Dalzell showcase the best writings and statements of America's legendary "robber barons"--Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Ford, Carnegie, Armour, Du Pont, and others--on such timeless topics as risk taking and innovation, growth strategies, workplace design, and leadership. Featuring lively commentary from Smith and Dalzell as well as period illustrations, Wisdom from the Robber Barons will capture the imagination of any business reader who aspires to make a mark on the world.

5 out of 5 stars Would you really want to be rich, powerful and famous?.......2007-07-17

This is an excellent little book that shows what it takes to be rich, powerful and famous.I just did a review on "The Secret",July 16,2007;which tells you the secret to success by basically wishing for it.
This book, though put together by academics, shows what these "Barons" believed were the ingredients in their success.
This book reminds me of a Special Walter Cronkite did over 25 years ago.He had 4 highly successful entreprenneurs ;Land, who invented the Polaroid,Getty,of oil fame, and two others who I can't recall). He also had 4 young men who were completing their University courses. The Barons told the students what it took them to attain the successes they had. They were going to give each student $1,000 (more than any of them had when they started) and armed with "the secrets to success" set them on their way to becoming asrich, powerful and famous as they did.
As the barons explained what they did,the sacrifices they made, the discipline it took, the obsession to succeed and all that went with it;it was clear that the students, though intent in the beginning, weren't sure they really wanted to buy into it all.The barons also were convinced that the students didn't really want to be rich, powerful and famous;they only wanted the things they thought went along with it.
So,as you read this book you see that the money and fame was way down the list of what these highly successful people were after. The money and fame was simply a by-product and at the most ,only a tool to further their dreams. As for the riches, they usually lost it in the end or gave it away.It was filling their dream that was important.
As I write this,we have two great examples in the news here in Toronto. Ed Mervish, from humble beginnings, made millions in the low cost retail business and later in the Arts and Entertainment. He loved his employes and they worshiped him. He loved his city and became one of its most admired citizens. Then there is Conrad Black, who came from a well to do background and created a huge empire, and now fighting to defend himself in court. Don't you not think that it was something other than just money that drove these two men;and is it any wonder why so few have what it takes to be rich, powerful and famous. If one has such desires ,the price is high and you better be brepared to pay it.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Book with Bad Poison..........2006-05-12

There are some great quotes from 19th & early 20th century masters of industry from this wee book. The hard thinking and great tyre industrialist Harvey Firestone should be looked out for and observed, as is also the underrated but brilliant U.S. President Calvin Coolidge. But the book is needlessly ruined!

Remember the title of the book is called "Wisdom of the Robber Barons". So why do these academic authors ruin their work with unnecessary inclusions admiring anti-capitalistic Muckrakers [Alfred Henry Lewis etc] who abhor the huge & necessary economic undertakings of great men? And not surprisingly, true to form, the ruthlessly honest & financial genius Jay Gould is not even recognised as a pinnacle of economic mastery, he is abhored and misquoted badly on page 96. Why?

Perhaps, the authors are apologising for their own unproductive efforts as academics. This is unfortunate. If they had deleted their poisoned edicts from their observations I would have rated this book higher. Nevertheless, well-healed and superior academic writers do exist for which I would recommend...

The Myths of the Robber Barons by Burton Fulsom

5 out of 5 stars A Slender Volume of Abundant Value.......2000-11-24

I really enjoyed reading this book, especially because there are so many quotations included which I had not encountered previously. Smith and Dalzell identify "enduring lessons from Rockefeller, Morgan, and [others among] the first industrialists." The term "Robber Barons" suggests criminal monarchs. No doubt it has some direct relevance to those discussed, at least at some point in their respective business careers. The material is organized as follows: an excellent Introduction ("Why Robber Barons Matter") followed by four chapters (Venturing, Competing, Managing, and Leading). Then there is a handy section called "Chronology: Business and World Events, 1870-1929,'" followed by recommendations for "Further Reading."

Why do the Robber Barons matter? "During the golden age of industry, running from the midnineteenth century through 1930 or so, the Robber Barons commercialized risky high technologies and figured out how to build radically new organizations from the bottom up. They identified the great entrepreneurial and management issues of the world's first big corporations, and they devised surprisingly durable solutions to the basic business problems of modern civilization." Here are a few of the quotations which caught my eye:

"There could be no progress until enough people could be made dissatisfied -- and this could be done only when they were brought to think beyond the limits to which they were accustomed." (Thomas Edison)

"If you have an idea, that is good. If you also have ideas as to how to work it out, that is better." (Henry Ford)

"Every executive has to recognize sooner or later that he himself cannot do everything that needs to be done. Until he recognizes this, he is only an individual, with an individual's power, but after he recognizes it, he becomes, for the first time, an executive, with control of multiple powers." (Alfred Sloan)

The authors have done an excellent job of selecting and distributing quotations such as these throughout the text. They include their own insightful comments, correlating them with key points previously introduced in their Introduction. Is there a great deal that is "new" in this slender volume? No. Is there much of value to be learned or have reaffirmed? You bet.

Conventional wisdom says it's rude to invite someone to dinner on the same day. Jennifer's real life wisdom says it's never rude to invite guests to your home. The worst that will happen is that they'll be busy and say no. Conventional wisdom says never serve the same meal that you offered guests the last time. Jennifer says if you've got a signature dish, flaunt it!

5 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Entertaining.......2007-09-18

I have made several of these recipes and find them quick and delicious. They are easy and allow you time to enjoy yourself, spend some time with your guests and not spend all your time in the kitchen.
I questioned some of the ingredients in one recipe but followed it anyway and it was delicious. I even bought the book for a friend. I highly recommend this book for someone who loves to entertain but hates missing the party.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, inspiring read.......2006-11-11

I enjoyed this cookbook; the tone is converational, and there is not much pretense (where there COULD be) in what is presented. On a whim I tried the roast brussel sprouts, and though they were better than expected, I will still NOT serve them for a party. (The success was that I was inspired by the book to even buy the brussel sprouts!) Other recipes are good, even great--try the roasted potatoes with whatever you have on hand (I used fingerlings & purples), just as the book suggests. The info contained here isn't rocket science, but entertaining various crowds can be somewhat daunting if you've been out of the loop a while...which I had been. Jennifer Rubell gives good encouragement, and her advice is sound.

        5 out of 5 stars Isn't for the party-giver who likes stress.......2006-08-19

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for those intimidated by dinner parties.......2006-07-10

I throw a fair number of parties but struggle with how to enjoy them more.

I decided to test this book before reviewing it by having 6 person dinner party. Everyone raved about the food (I made the skirt steak & parmesan/fig potatoes) and I actually did end up enjoying the process more. I followed Jennifer's advice and asked for help from the guests - one couple brought the appetizers, one set up bar outside and made mojitos -everyone had a good time. In fact, two of my "guinea pigs" went out and bought the book after the party.

I particularly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys having people around for parties but not necessarily the prep & process: non-foodies, newlyweds, new graduates. The recipes are easy and the advice is good.

5 out of 5 stars A Book For the Real Humans, With Real Lives.......2006-05-04

This is the cookbook we all needed starting out - at school, in college, first date, first marriage, first kid... and for everything after that too. I've never worked with a book before that made me think, "Wow, that was actually, really easy!" without making me feel like an idiot. Not only are the recipes actually, genuinely, totally useable, but they project Rubell's sexy confidence - you get the sense she's in the room with you saying, "Come on, just throw a little brown sugar and mustard on the pork, throw it in the oven and meet us upstairs for a drink." You do. It tastes perfect. And, you don't feel like a slave to the kitchen. This is a must have.

OK, so your life is complicated. Whose isn't? Donata Maggipinto thinks that most people would entertain more often if they knew how to do it simply. Real-Life Entertaining shows how to put forth the effort required to make guests comfortable and happy without the usual pressure-cooker effect on the hosts. Her four seasonal menus in the "Casual Suppers" section are truly casual yet stylish (for example, the easy-to-prepare pumpkin chowder is presented in small hollowed-out pumpkins), and the four "Big-Deal Meals," while relying on slightly more sophisticated ingredients and presentation, are still doable by intermediate cooks. Each section has additional recipes beyond the four menus, special style notes, and primer pages. Maggipinto's style is friendly--it's OK to serve food you bought as take-out, let the guests help with the dishes, and even serve on TV trays if there's something very special on the tube. There are plenty of Martha Stewart-style suggestions for those who are looking for "extra credit," but for the majority of us, who just want things to be "good enough," this book helps.

5 out of 5 stars More than just appealing design.......2006-05-17

I bought Real-Life Entertaining used several years ago in large part because I found the book design so attractive (I've been a writer, editor, and publisher). As I started making the recipes, I learned that this book had more than just a pretty face. Recipes are clear and uncomplicated but result in memorable meals. The panettone bread pudding with cognac-caramel sauce alone is worth the cover price.

5 out of 5 stars Style simply done for our fast paced living.......2002-02-27

This book is well done. It helps the one who truly wants to provide a memorable experience dining with all the tools and thoughts. From table setting to recipes to their presentation to total function planning, this work is chock full of ideas and thought starters which easily serve as do-it guides if one wants Donata to do all the thinking.

The recipes are not forboding or complex, but yet are very sophisticated, rich and easy to find ingredients and prep techniques. Some that especially attract my tastebuds are: Roasted Game Hens Stuffed under the sking with Herbed Ricotta; Duck Breasts with Cherry-Cabernet Sauce; Crown Roast of Pork with "Triple a" Stuffing; Beet and Champagne Risotto.

This is extremely well-organized which makes it simple and easy to use. Divided into major sections of Casual Suppers, Big-Deal Meals, Parties (with five listed) and Ways with Take-Aways. What is also an attractive feature throughout is Primers on various topics such as "D-I-Y Bar" Caviar, etc., Style Notes where thoughts on plates, centerpieces, etc. are shared.

Those looking for entertaining aid will find true, stylish relief from this delightfully done resource.

        5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2001-11-02

I received this as a gift and have made over a dozen of the recipes. The grilled swordfish with lemon aioli is to die for! There are some great suggestions for how to plan, prepare and organize dinner parties. Starting with an empty dishwasher is one of them - it's so simple yet it makes a world of difference. The recipes are relatively simple and have been consistently very good. Out of the 20 or so cookbooks I have - this is my favorite.

        5 out of 5 stars Real-Life Entertaining is a stylish idea guide........1998-10-19

When I want to cook, there are many cookbooks from which to choose. When I want to entertain, I will go directly to Real Life-Entertaining. This book is not only full of simple recipes and menu ideas but also style notes that share easy ideas for making our homes and tables beautiful for our guests. Best of all, the author understands that my life is a busy one! She proves that I don't have to spend all day decorating to host a memorable occassion in my home. I like the party favor cellophane bags with chocolates tied with a ribbon trim and the idea of TASSELS on the backs of my dining room chairs! This book is my new entertaining bible.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Art versus Impressionism..........2003-05-30

Judy Murrah is a very talented lady. Her book received great reviews which is why I purchased it. However, her personal style is not what I look for in design and embellishing. Her work is very contemporary, and I tend to be much more of a traditionist in design and embellishment. I prefer needlework designs that date as far back as Medieval times. I like order, and I love needle-art to be so beautifully done that one may even frame it as a piece of art.

              J. Marsha Michler wrote "The Magic of Crazy Quilting: A Complete Resource for Embellished Quilting." Her approach to design and embellishment is much closer to what I prefer in my own work, and her designs can be nicely applied to clothing and other projects as well--not crazy quilting alone. She very clearly illustrates stitching and embellishing techniques, including high quality photo close-ups, making it very easy even for the novice.

Another wonderful book that I have found both exciting and artistic is "The Art of Manipulating Fabric" by Colette Wolff. Using your own artistic imagination, both these books can offer any design or look you desire, and both have a much more "serious" presentation of design.

If you like a contemporary look to design, then Judy Murrah's "Jazz it Up..." is for you. She gives clear illustrations and close-up high quality photos for examples to follow. Her ideas and designs can be done by even the novice.

              Happy sewing!

5 out of 5 stars I am all jazzed up!.......2002-11-11

Judy has written many "Jazz" books that you can now find on the Internet auctions going for big bucks because they are out of print. I happen to have all her books, thanks to a good friend, and feel this one sums up all her shared knowledge of wearable art stitching and embellishing. The first wearable project I made was adapted from one of Judy's' first books. I consider her work as laying the foundation for all wearable artists out in the world today. These 101 techniques can be used on a simple cuff or on your whole project.

5 out of 5 stars Wearable Art for the Practical Person.......1999-03-03

This is the book we have been waiting for from Judy. She mentioned it was in the works two years ago and I have been eagerly looking forward to it. As with all of Judy's books, the directions are clear and there are marvelous graphics for all of the techniques she presents. You are given lots of ideas with photos of finished goods. This book will give you the confidence to make that one of a kind vest or jacket. The hardest part is deciding what techniques to start with on your creation!

If you are thinking of just trimming the edge of a jacket or making a whole wardrobe this is the how-to idea book for you.

                Book Description

Although previous advocates of European Unity proposed the replacement of the "balance of power" model of international relations, Jean Monnet was the first to try to do so along Franco-German rather than Franco-British lines. He concluded that restrictions on national sovereignty were essential and that there were steps that could be taken prior to full federation. Through his Community method, Monnet hoped to create a French-led, continental federation within a Western association. His "United States of Europe" was aimed not only back at the Franco-German conflict, but also forward to the problem of Europe's place in the world. This study explores Jean Monnet's European project and the intentions behind it from World War I to the 1960s. Fransen relies on a close and comparative reading of Monnet's notes and documents, placed in their political and historical context. Most work on Monnet's contribution begins with his later presence as an elder statesman of the European movement and reads his later pronouncements back into his earlier work. This book takes the opposite approach and, by concentrating on his earlier work, is able to show a more complicated picture of Monnet's aspirations than has been presented to date.

                  Book Description

Globalization and the Small Open Economy investigates the specific role of small open countries in a globalizing economic system and assesses the unique pressures and opportunities afforded them by globalization.

Traditionally, in contrast to large countries, small open economies (SOEs) have relied on international economic policy rather than domestic policy as a means to foster national economic development. Their firms also have a far greater reliance on host countries to gain competitive advantage than those of larger nations. This would suggest that globalization has potentially a far greater impact on SOEs than on large countries. The contributors to this volume concur with this view and seek to outline the challenges and opportunities faced by policymakers and managers of multinational enterprises from SOEs. They examine the role of government, environmental policy, inward and outward foreign direct investment and multinational management and conclude that, on balance, globalization provides more of an opportunity than a threat to economic growth in these countries.

An innovative set of papers with fascinating new insights on the present and future role of small, open countries in the global economy. This will be an important new reference source for academics and students, public policy research institutes, international business scholars and trade economists.

5 out of 5 stars An informative compilation of scholarly assessments.......2002-03-27

Collaboratively edited by Daniel Van Den Bulcke (Professor of International Management and Development, University of Antwerp, Belgium) and Alain Verbeke (Professor of International Business and Public Policy, Solvay Business School, University of Brussels, Belgium), Globalization And The Small Open Economy is an informative compilation of scholarly assessments regarding small, open countries and their economies in a globalizing economic system. Examining the role of government, environmental policy, investment and multinational management, Globalization And The Small Open Economy concludes that globalization offers more benefits than threats to economic growth to small nations. Individual nations looked at in close detail include Korea, Singapore, and Belgium in this fact-filled, persuasively argued and highly analytical economic commentary. Globalization And The Small Open Economy is a strongly recommended addition to academic reference collections and international economics supplemental reading lists.

BROKEN CRAYONS is a book focused on helping the reader expand and enrich their creative thinking skills and train them how to help others do the same. BC is written in a conversational tone, as if the author and reader are discussing each lesson and chapter throughout the book.

BC begins with an analysis of the reader's creative traits and their style of creative thinking. It follows with chapters on how to maximize each.

After the focus on the reader is a discussion of various external and internal blocks of creativity and creativeness with several examples of how the reader can eliminate or move around them.

Then BC provides several idea generating tools and a creative problem solving model with exercises to help the reader develop a working knowledge with each.

The final section of BC focuses on how managers and leaders and parents as well can help develop the creative thinking of other people as a team leader.

5 out of 5 stars Book continues to help people.......2005-11-06

This book continues to spark creativity in its readers. It has been translated into Turkish, Japanese and Slovakian. I highly recommend it for people seeking to expand and enrich their creativity and the creativity of others they work with or in their families.

4 out of 5 stars Expand your horizons.......2000-09-12

This book really helps to redefine what we consider "The Box". It gives you thoughts and ideas on how to expand the way you think and to give you ideas on how to be more creative. Not only was it a quick read, it was invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Validation for creativity........2000-06-11

Once in awhile, a book comes along that redefines those pesky negative self-perceptions from our past. Robert Alan Black's "Broken Crayons" did that for me. In reading his book I realized I've been a crayon breaker all my life: as a child I was called mischievous and naughty, but as an adult, people compliment me on my creativity. Read this book and maybe you, too will find that your troublesome behaviors of yesteryear helped pave your route to success. Here's to more crayon breaking for all of us!

                                    5 out of 5 stars A useful compendium and a wonderful read.......2000-04-30

After dealing with Alan Black in internet creativity forums for some years, I have come to admire his infectious enthusiasm, his joviality, and his constructive and energetic approach to all things creative. I decided I had to get away from my myopic pursuit of better-known creativity gurus and traverse the lesser known works for their greater rewards.

Alan's book is rewarding and well-written, and is worth twice the cover price. Or you can simply buy two copies, like I did. A wonderful read, indeed, especially if you are too far away to benefit from his training first-hand!

4 out of 5 stars Thar's gold here, but you gotta dig for it........2000-04-10

This delightful little book is full of useful tips and aha! methodology to help the reader guide groups or individuals through new approaches to organizational problem solving -- or to life. The first 20 pages or so tend to be a rehash of ideas that have been printed and discussed in many other publications. However, those who are able and willing to continue further in the book will be richly rewarded. Black's typology of creative thinking styles is especially useful in figuring out why some of us meet with blockages in our attempts to get a group to buy into our ideas.
