Provocative guide to a fuller life; touches the heart........1999-04-05
This little book is an easy read, organized by subjects and written in brief, single-page, thought-provoking essays. One can spend ten minutes on a section, walk away and ponder, and return whenever time allows without losing the thread of the book. It is almost a recipe book for life for those who have lived through the acquisition-is-all 80s and long for a more fulfilled, balanced life. It is highly appropriate for males or females, especially for those just starting adult life or those hitting the midlife "questioning" time. If you stop to think about it, most of what is in this book is something you once knew or could have figured out on your own, given enough time. But since Lemke and Diedrich have already done that and laid it succinctly before you, you have the option of moving forward, using their formulas or advice, and deciding whether it works for you. I liked the sections on keeping perspective, work, and family, but my favorite was the one on personal culture -- a road map to help you know what kind of person you want to be, and how to get there. Despite its readability, this book isn't an easy-answer book. It asks some hard questions, and for those dedicated to finding that richer life, the work is just beginning!
A "keep to your bedside book".......1999-04-05
This book is the type you can not put down once you start reading it. It is very easy to reference to it and it reminds you of the important things in life. It's make for a very nice gift to anyone you love.

No sugar - but lots of white flour.......2006-05-11
I was disappointed that most of these recipes still use refined white flour or cake flour. These refined carbohydrates can spike blood sugar too, just like sugar does. Probably the only recipes I'll be able to use are the ones for custards, etc.
Not as great as the reviews say.......2006-02-23
I just wanted to lend another perspective to the reviews written here for this book because I bought this book based on those reviews and was very disappointed. The majority of the recipes call for sugar substitutes such as Sugar Twin or Equal, which is okay, but I was expecting more recipes involving natural sweeteners, like juices. A lot of the recipes are not really recipes - for example, fruit jam roll-ups are simply refrigerated crescent rolls with no-sugar jam and nuts - wow, I needed a recipe book for that? Also, the recipe instructions are annoyingly vague - I can make up my own recipe and estimate and correct for, but when I purchase a cookbook, I expect exact and detailed measurements and instructions. Overall, it certainly isn't a 5-star book, and I just wanted to write this review so other people thinking of buying this book would not be disappointed when they got it and tried the recipes. I wish I would have looked for a Splenda cookbook instead.
Thi Book for you.........2003-02-10
I found this book at the library, and made lemon bars for friends who's child is hypoglycemic. They loved them so much I had to get the book...Now we all eat these really great desserts.Thank god for good sugar free recipes like these..Susan Young
We love "How sweet it is without the sugar".......2001-03-07
After trying the shortbread cookies our family wanted me to try more recipies.I recomend the "choice cheesecake"on page 43.You would never believe it only has 197 calories. My past experience with sugar free type deserts have been not the greatest untill we found this great cook book.So far everything tryed has tasted as good as it sounds. When can we find your next cookbook in the store?
A "must" for the diabetic cookbook collection.......2000-06-06
How Sweet It Is...Without The Sugar is a superb cookbook specifically designed for diabetics and dieters who must avoid high caloric sweeteners that traditionally make desserts taste good, but cause blood sugar levels to soar dangerously. Jean C. Wade, herself a diabetic, provides a fructose-based alternative sweetener for every recipes; includes easy-to-read charts for Equivalent Sugar Substitute Measurements; helpfully breaks down each recipe into its nutritional components per service (including calories, carbohydrates, protean, sugars, total fat, and sodium); and lists diabetic exchanges for every recipe. From Chocolate-Custard Cake, Nutty Apple Brownies, and Nectarine Bottom-Crust Cobbler, to Fresh Strawberry Pie, Flavored Sweetened Whipped Cream, Fruit Jam Roll-Ups, and Cinnamon Tortilla Shells, How Sweet It Is...Without The Sugar will prove a popular and much utilized cookbook for the diabetic and the dieter's kitchen shelf collection.

Book Description
Stephen Trimble conveys the beauty and fine craftsmanship of Pueblo Indian pottery and shows how pottery making is closely connected to the Pueblos' beliefs, their ties to the land, their role in the modern economic world, and their feelings of identity. With over 75 photographs, Talking with the Clay illustrates all the major pottery types, from the glittering micaceous of Taos and Picuris to the red and gold polychromes of Hopi.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2003-02-20
This book was recommended to me by the owner of a well known Native American Arts gallery as possibly THE best book on the subject, and it completely lives up to the recommendation. Based on a series of interviews with prominent potters from each pueblo, it not only gives an overview of the history of the different potteries, it is filled with personal thoughts and views of the various artists about their work--not only the processes of creating pottery, but their feelings about how they as modern potters fit into the "history" as well. If you are at all interested in Southwest Pueblo Pottery, you MUST read this book. It's not a "picture book" like so many others, though it does have many great photos, but it's not a scholarly text book either. I cannot recommend this book highly enough and I cannot thank my gallery owner friend enough for recommending it to me.

The premise of Elizabeth Mitchell's W: Revenge of the Bush Dynasty is that if you want to understand George W. Bush, you must look at his parents--especially his father. So, it makes sense that Mitchell's book is as much about former President Bush as it is about his son. Mitchell, a former executive editor of George magazine, clearly believes that pleasing his father has been the driving force in George W.'s life, leading him to follow in his father's footsteps almost stride for stride--to Andover, Yale, the oil business, politics, and a run for the presidency. An Andover friend of George W. told Mitchell that he has been resolutely trying "to live up to his father's achievements" his entire life. And that hasn't always proved easy, particularly in school, where George W. excelled in social pursuits rather than academics. "It's the first son syndrome," Mitchell quotes another friend. "You want to live up to the very high expectations set by your father, but at the same time you want to go your own way, so you end up going kicking and screaming down the exact path your father made." His mother, Barbara, even said in an interview that George W. and Jeb's decisions to enter politics "sort of vindicates our life," touching on a recurring theme in the book. "George W. would love to avenge his father's defeat," Mitchell writes. "To some, his political interest seemed ignited less by passion for the issues than by revenge." Full of rich detail and telling anecdotes, W is an important look at a dynasty in waiting. --Linda Killian
Book Description
Journalist Elizabeth Mitchell discusses the high and low points of George W. Bush's life and political career. With a new, up-to-date chapter on the 2000 election, the post-September 11th presidency, and the war in Iraq, W offers both in-depth and current analysis of the most powerful man in the world.

Where's the beef?.......2004-04-07
Mitchell chooses to focus on the early years of Dubya, bringing him up as one would in a full length biography from his boyhood years to his formative years in the oil business and stumping for his father's political campaigns. She seems to have an overall favorable impression of Dubya, although she points out the various indescretions along the way, including his fraternity days at Yale.
I suppose this information is helpful to those who want to get a more familiar picture of Dubya, but my interest was in his political aspirations, his first bid for a US Representative seat from Texas (1978) and his successful bid for Governor of Texas (1994). Mitchell gives this period suprisingly short shrift. She also brushes over his oil ventures and the partnership he helped form to buy the Texas Rangers. She is critical of the leading role he assumed in the baseball partnership, and in the Presidential campaigns of his father, but in both cases gives him the benefit of the doubt.
She builds up the relationship between father and son and how Dubya more or less patterned his life after his father, achieving success only after his father had failed in his re-election bid. She notes how Dubya was the natural-born campaigner, able to reach out to the people where his father wasn't, and how his re-affirmation in the church helped him to gain this constituency. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of meat to this book, it capitalized on the attention Bush got after seizing the White House. There have been much more thorough books written since this publication.
Good Overview.......2002-05-02
This is an interesting book that takes a look at George W. Bush and how his life shaped him all the way up to his running for President. The main premise of the book is that GW is following in his father footsteps out of love and admiration for him and a strong sense of duty. The author also gives us about 50% of the book on the first George Bush and his life story which is needed to show you how close GW follows in his footsteps. I would have liked a bit more detail on the other Bush children though, as the author states that all the children have a desire to follow in the father's footsteps.
I really did not expect this book to provide me all the details it did about the first President George Bush. That was a pleasant surprise for me. We get a good run down of his overall life and some interesting details about his time as VP and President. I also enjoyed reading how he felt a responsibility and loyalty to Nixon enough to take the RNC post. I actually came away with a better understanding of the father as both a person and a leader. I thought some of the insights also made the Bush handling of the 92 race a little clearer for me.
The fist part of the book makes you think this is a love fest book put out by the GW campaign. To be honest, I really did not get that much out of all the details of him in grade school / high school. The book really started to matter to me when the author got into his time in College and later. Once GW started to move on in life the less then faltering facts started to populate the book. Given that that author gives you so many facts, both good and bad, you get a balanced look and the book, in its totality, comes off as a balanced report. I actually did think the author could have played up some of the questions on the Viet Nam issue and the business failures / bailouts to get a more sensational book.
The one area that I would have liked more detail on was the major successes of GW. The book does a good job of running down his less then stellar business career, but I also wanted more detail on his work on his father's campaign. What the book does say on that point makes GW out to be good at the roll he was a playing - I wanted more detail. I also thought we got shortchanged on his run for the Governor and his service in the office. I wanted more detail on his major accomplishments in office. Basically I felt the author rushed this part through to get to print.
This book will not be the end all be all biography of his years before he became President, it is a bit light for that. What the book is though, is a very readable and interesting look at GW and his relationship with his father. If you are interested in either of these two men then this is a good way to learn some facts and not get bogged down in a heavy work.
Finally!.......2001-06-28
What a great book. Democrat or Republican, all should appreciate this writing. Not a documentary, but more, a story. Very easy reading. I'll be looking forward to reading more from this author.
Insightful!.......2001-06-02
Former Texas Governor Ann Richards once delivered this unforgettable quip about George W. Bush: "Poor George, he was born with a silver foot in his mouth." Basically, that line has defined the media's portrayal of Bush ever since. He is depicted as the privileged, but none-too-bright scion of a political dynasty. Of course, as is the case with all really good insults, there is more than a little truth to Richard's words. But is there more to the man? That's the critical question of the 2000 presidential election, and for an answer, we at getAbstract.com recommend Elizabeth Mitchell's skillfully written account of the pampered life and tobacco-chewing times of W. Although the Bush family declined to cooperate with this particular bio, many family friends offered their insights, and the figure that emerges from their descriptions is far more complex than his late-night comedy caricature might suggest. Mitchell's superbly documented research reveals that the man who many imply is running for office simply because he has nothing better to do, is in fact guided by two powerful motives: personal redemption and family revenge. The latter agenda is clear: W. will avenge his father's defeat by striking down Al Gore, heir to the Clinton legacy. The personal redemption is a bit more difficult to isolate, but has something to do with measuring up to his father and discrediting critics like Ann Richards, who is, as we mentioned, the former governor of Texas. Smirk.
Not bad, but not exactly the most focused........2001-01-02
As opposed to some of the other George W. biographies, it wasn't readily apparent whether the author was a fan of the not-yet president-elect. This adds a bit to the objectivity of the book. I feel I could believe the author.
I did think that she spent a bit more time than necessary at times talking about his father George and his brother Jeb. It is understandable that they do have an influence on W (the book points out where some ideas and phrases were borrowed for the father's and the brother's campaigns while W was running for governor), but I think the author went into more depth on them than was necessary.
One of the major factors in W's credibility is that he was governor of Texas. I don't think that the author spend enough time there to really give us a good idea of how his actions in office match his objectives for his campaign. I thought this could have used a bit more coverage.
Not the best biography out there, but I would still recommend reading it. When rea

Insightful!.......2005-10-03
Although James J. Mapes's self-help book is stronger than average and includes some colorful stories from the author's life, it offers essentially predictable advice. Mapes uses the physics metaphor of quantum mechanics creatively, to show how you can make major life improvements, freeing yourself from the fear and inertia that may have held you back in the past. An actor, clinical hypnotist and corporate speaker, Mapes also includes a valuable section on how to encourage better teamwork. The material on visualization is strong, and we recommend the volume to both self-help devotees and newcomers.
Best book on the subject and may................2004-12-14
Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar right behind. This book is intended to improve Your Self -Steem, -Knoledge and -Confidence to its very roots. As you realize that to be true, it will become mandatory as a reading.
How Much of an Expert is he Really?.......2004-05-05
I bought this book and then did some background checking on the author. Seems Mapes's PhD is from a "diploma mill" - a phony and now defunct outfit that purported to be "San Moritz University," but is really just a printing shop. In fact, San Moritz is one of a group of unaccredited "universities," many of which were closed in an ongoing effort by the FTC. Since San Moritz claimed a UK address, it is not a recognised body as described by the UK Education Reform Act either. San Moritz was famous for giving out academic qualifications, transcripts and phoney reference letters to anyone, sight unseen, just for a few bucks. Do a Google search on San Moritz University, and you will see what I mean :-).
Not an ordinary self-help book.......2004-02-22
This is a book that can be viewed as two complementary ways:
1) It is a summary of a lot of ideas from a great number of other self-help books. It adds valuable quotes and phrases from other books, and tries to make a unified view from suc different subjects and areas as NLP or (Neuro Linguistic Procesing) to Yoga, self-meditation and even hipnosis.
2) The author creates theorems (valid truths) that can help you realize how you can relax and see your life more transparently, like if you were seeing yourself through the eyes of another person. He creates 14 steps to accomplish this - so that you can gradually become more daring and more self-controlled at the same time.
This is a book that is not a revelation... Far from that.
However is a good reading and can help anyone to get a different view of themselves, guiding you to get a more fullfilling life, and become happier with themselves, by changing somethings or by letting you know how to stop and just relaize how you are doing today.
You Create a Reality That Adaps to Your Point of View!.......1998-06-15
The principles of quantum physics (and all of its 'relations') has finally made its way into the realm of human behavior and thinking through the easy to read and apply book by Mapes. This book will appeal to those whose center of control is located within themselves. For those with a center of control external to themselves, or those with a locus in reciprocity--as in the form of some 'System', i.e., ...isms of any nature, or formal religions, it would be more of a struggle. Precisely because 'You create a reality that adapts to your point of view', is a fundamental principle on which the universe is based. Challenging to some, breathtaking to others, this is fundamentally one of the finest books to ever spell out the functioning of human behavior based on a taking of personal responsibility. A 21st Century jump-start!
